Best Asian food I’ve ever had. The staff is great and friendly and down to earth. The staff is clearly family with one another. The boss is great and kind. One time the boss paid for me and my friend’s meal. No charge at all.Everything about this place is great.Definitely a place to stop by in Northern California.
The food was great but my only problem is when you have a whole table full of customers you need to serve them all at the same time. 3 out of 5 of our party got our food and it took them 20 mins for the remaining people in our party to receive their food. No one wants to eat in front of other people.
Cant beat the atmosphere or portion sizes. Its the local restaurant on the Plaza for the historic Hotel Arcata, and the decor of the restaurant brings to mind early 20th century Asian-American culture. Vegan and vegetarian options are available, and if you eat fish, the salmon entree is more than enough unless youre an unusually big eater. A full bar in the old style, including sake.
Tomo is good however the service is really lacking at the moment. They have one waiter serving 7 tables that all get seated at the same time. The food from the kitchen came out before the sushi, the sushi took over a half hour. Not sure why but the owner wouldnt seat us where we requested and did not give a reason. He sat another party there shortly after us.Its too bad the owner ruins an otherwise good restaurant.
I’m a regular customer and have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on this fine establishment however the line is always busy and after persistence and patience I finally was able to get through to the staff who refused to take my order at 736pm. I was told the kitchen closed at 730pm ! This is not the first time they have rudely hung up the phone after advertising that they are open until 9pm for pick up. It’s obviously the only lace in town so they do not care. Thur customer services poor and the WEB site is incorrect. They never have Chi-so and the hot sake isn’t even hot! 😢
Tomo is the original sushi restaurant in the Arcata plaza. Before all the other sushi spots arrived Tomo was the place to go. Management has allways been accommodating to our huge tables for birthdays or harvest parties and the food has always been top notch. Try the buddah belly hand roll for a treat or the teriyaki salmon dinner. Tomo never dissapoints!
This is a lively place, with an extensive selection to choose from of some of the best sushi we have ever eaten. They serve cocktails as well, so it is not your traditional Japanese restaurant, but with a college town twist. The atmosphere is louder but not out of hand. It is expensive but you get what you pay for.
Tomo used to be a fave for good food and a celebratory meal. It has gone down hill recently. Tempura batter has gotten too thick and greasy, and many offerings are too dry and overcooked. Will try a third time soon and if it hasnt improved Ill speak to the manager. The service is still great.
We met with friends at this spot for a meeting. my friend recommended this spot. Well, we were not disappointed. The staff were extremely nice and we had a great feeling. The meal was fresh and delicious. We had a great time and we will definitely return to this restaurant. We recommend this place to all.
Always love some Tomo! Excellent sushi with lots of North Coast Love. The butsuguri is not to be missed. Try the Yam tempura roll for something different. Larrupin station for a uniquely Humboldt flavor. The house rolls tailor to every palate. Epic... Thank you Joe, Mimi and company for holding down this staple of Northern California. A Humboldt visit isnt complete without a trip to Tomo! As I was welcomed back this last month (with an accompanied unannounced table of 12) I was told Welcome Home. They pulled together tables and rocked it as good as it always has been and more! This place certainly is just that... Home.
Lovely place. Great location. Always a little bit busy, which I like because I often times travel alone and when I stop through Arcata theres something kinda magical about sitting at a crowded sushi restaurant by yourself. Been here 3 times on 3 separate trips and will definitely be here a 4th if I get the chance again
Very beautiful location. The food is great quality and extremely original. I was very surprised by the combinations of ingredients that made a simple roll a explosion of interesting flavors. Downside, the waiting time...but if you are not in a rush, is way worth it! ☆
This place is absolutely amazing. They have real traditional rolls that are outstanding. I highly recommend this place over sushi spot who is non-traditional. The sushi chefs are absolutely wonderful with am amazing attitude and willing to answer any question you have with complete honesty. I asked for a recomendation from the kitchen and there advice was the best things I have seeked all year. An absolute must if in the area.
It was a lot of years ago when I last ate here (around 1996), but the food was good even if the sushi man behind the bar was dull and uncommunicative. Frankly, I thought it was just wrong to have a white man who looked like a lumberjack making sushi, but he was quite good at it and the fish was delicious, not to mention very affordable. If the same guy is still working there, he would be an old man like me, but still not Japanese.
Great food with decent portion sizes. The staff has been friendly, the restaurant and bathrooms are kept clean. You need a code for the bathroom as it belongs to the hotel. The restaurant is located within the hotel/underneath, in the lobby area. It is right in the Arcata Plaza. The atmosphere is great , a good spot for date night. The menu can be a little pricey depending on what you get but for the amount of food & quality it is worth it. I would recommend it and go again.
The food was delicious and the service was great. Had no problems finding vegetarian options on the menu and our server was conscientious enough to let me know that the sauce that came with the tempura basket had fish sauce in it and she brought me a vegetarian version.
Had chirashi sushi. The sashimi portion and size were very generous; however, the sushi rice was terrible. Barely had any vinegar mixed in. We also had to wait for a long time to get our food. The waitress was very attentive and gave us complementary mochi ice-cream which was nice.
I cant believe this place is still in business. I ate here back in the mid 1990s and the food was good: Id had better sushi before, but the prices were fairly reasonable, the food was better than fair and I never got too sick after a meal. The one major drawback back then was that the sushiman was a white guy, and a surly hick of a white guy at that. He was largely uncommunicative, which was uncomfortable because--back then--the bar only had about 5 seats. Im used to boisterous, fun, Japanese sushimen who are a blast to get drunk, because then they give huge servings. This guy never drank, never smiled and his sushi tasted like it was made by a honkey... and it wasBut Ive had worse.
Your typical Japanese food with good choices for apps, entrees, and sushi. They have plated entrees and all kinds of sushi and hand rolls freshly made at the sushi bar. I was pleasantly surprised how the food and drinks were pretty authentic and great tasting sushi, but i saw no sign of Japanese working at the sushi bar or wait staff, unless they were in the kitchen. Definately unexpected in a town like Arcata where there is not much if any Japanese or Asian people.
The staff was very nice but the food and sushi was such a disappointment. I used to love this restaurant 3 years ago but its just gone down hill. The food was soupy, the sushi rice was stale, the bar now has a TV with loud sports on and people yelling. Not the relaxing environment it use to be.

2022-04-22Nice and super attentive servers. Good food. The tofu teriyaki is a bit sweet, but the texture is very interesting, Ive never had tofu made like that anywhere else. My dinner bento box comes with a spicy tofu roll which tastes amazing, and a salad which is supposed to have shrimps but they skipped it even though I didnt even ask. I guess they figured that out themselves because I ordered all vegetarian items. They sat us right next to the fish tank because I took a picture of it first thing when we walked in. I love it when people detect these subtleties. The bathroom is shared with a hotel, clean and well stocked, and it requires a code to enter.

2021-07-21Our server, Luis, was fantastic, but the place is clearly understaffed. The wait times to order and receive food were long. However, the the food was great and very well priced. For appetizers, we ordered fried scallops and rainbow poké. Both were good, poké was better. For rolls, we ordered #4, #7, and the special Coco cabana roll. All were good but the special rolls was by far the best. Worth noting, most rolls were cooked opposed to raw, might be a common for the area.

2022-03-23Ive been going to this restaurant for at least 15 years. This is my current favorite sushi place in Humboldt. Its ALWAYS done right. They have a wide variety and its always been fresh. Never sloppy. They can get very busy on the weekends though, just a heads up. Try to come before 6pm to get a table

2021-05-18If the photo below doesnt encourage you to try this place out, if you havent already, bless your soul. I have never been disappointed by Tomos service, rolls, and delivery of food items. Everything Ive tried here is made with detail and so much flavor! Please be adventurous when going here. You wont be disappointed!

2022-04-18We went during their happy hour and I must say that, though expensive for small portions, their happy hour appetizers are DELICIOUS! Their chicken was so perfect and they had actual karaage! Super light and crispy.I was a little sad by the lack of variety, it felt like, from their sushi menu. Especially as someone who is practically obsessed with unagi. I must say though, every fish/meat that we got was cooked absolutely flawlessly. Perfectly done. And they have ramune!!

2021-12-14Disappointing...and it was highly recommended to me so that made it even more disappointing.I am not into drinking so this isnt a review of their happy hour. I ordered the fried prawns, their number 4 specialty roll, a BBQ eel roll with tamago and I think a Philadelphia roll along with a miso soup. While the soup was good, and the Philadelphia roll average, the prawns were crispy enough but I didnt understand the sauce you were supposed to dip it in. It was like watery, bland, vaguely lemony or gingery broth with green onion floating in it giving it no extra taste. I didnt end up liking the eel but that is personal taste so my husband took that one. The specialty roll ended up being one of those oversized rolls that are wide with the nori on the outside, and it was also so bland and the fish had a strange texture. It didnt seem like anything in that roll was really done well including the rice, which might have been overdone or too starchy or something, it just wasnt good. They at least comped that one when we told them about it so that was nice.

2021-11-03Great local sushi spot! Full bar. Large dining space. Not only is their food delicious, but their presentation is on point too! I also appreciate that their tables are spread out a good distance during Covid and staff members wear masks. They get busy, so plan accordingly.

2021-09-28#1 dont be in a hurry. Food came out Very slowly. We ordered dinner combo with each having choice of main and a roll. Ordered lemon drop martinis and I sent mine back as it was just straight vodka. The second was better but not great. My husband said later he should have sent his back too. Both left sitting on the table. Food arrived 1 hour 15 minutes after ordering. And we left 15 minutes after it arrived. We did have nice lunches the next day. Katsu chicken was dry however.
