I booked the room via Airbnb. The room was very clean. I will say that there is no AC which made the room very uncomfortable, but that wasnt the only thing. The Hotel Is haunted!! there is just a strange lurking feeling. From writings on the mirror in the bathroom to dark shadows next to your bed. It was really creepy. I did not sign up for that.
This was literally the worst hotel experience my friend and I have ever endured. There was a traumatic incident one night where another guest banged on our door then chased out of the building for no valid reason. There was no receptionist nor security when this incident had occurred, ironic when they promote “comfortable hospitality.” There was no sense of comfort knowing that were was no staff in the lobby when that happened, luckily we’re physically okay but that is not an experience anyone should have to go through. I would not recommend this hotel to ANYONE.
Our bedroom was big enough for two beds, with private bathroom and was fairly comfy. Did not have air conditioning, only ceiling fans but fortunately weather was not too hot, otherwise that would be a problem. The keys for the room is a plain old regular metal key. The elevator is also big enough. The location is great. Overall it was a good experience.
This hotel was the best value for everything it offered. I was on a budget but also looking for a clean/decent hotel. The rooms are very small but doesnt matter if youre planning to explore the city and be out of the room. The bed was very comfortable and clean. The room and the restroom were clean as well. The staff was very helpful as other reviews state. The reason I give it 3 stars (which I would give it 3.5 overall) is because the room was hot so we had to keep the window open the whole time but then it was very noisy at times outside. There were maybe 8 channels that worked on the T.V when we had time to watch it, not very good channels unless you really like politics. The room had no fridge or microwave (we did ask for a fridge and they brought one up the next day). We didnt have a shared bathroom when I chose the room on their website, but it was weird because there was a room next to us (jack n jill setup) so you could hear the people next to us and they could hear us shower or if we went to the restroom. I did have to ask one of the receptionist to make sure we didnt have a shared restroom or that they couldnt come in, which they couldnt but still weird that we couldnt shower or go to the restroom in peace. If you have a car you have to pay for parking which sucks. I would stay here again because the staff was very helpful, the rooms were clean, the bed was comfortable, and it was the best price I could find.
Locations is good. A lot places you can walk to from the hotel. When I first arrived the radiator was on full blast steaming into the curtain. I thought that was odd and the curtains could be shortened. The room felt like a sauna so I left it off the rest of the stay. As a young woman traveling alone in the city I didn’t like the doors didn’t have an extra lock on them like most hotel rooms. In fact it took me a couple tries to figure out how to lock the door properly. I’m really glad I paid for private bathroom. I believe that could be easily missed upon booking so if you aren’t open to that, make sure to book a room with a private bathroom. The fan & light system kind of had a mind of its own. On the welcome sheet it said that there was a remote to use to control the fan / light which I never found a separate remote just the wall panel. I’m not sure if the light was picking up another room remote signal but sometimes the main light would turn on and off on it’s own. Besides the fan, I didn’t notice any type of AC system so I’m not sure if I could stay here in the summer. The room was extremely warm every time I came back to the room but cooled down when I opened the window. The elevators works... but sounds like it’s falling apart, so if you get Claustrophobic or agoraphobic I would recommend taking the stairs. Although for the price this stay was fine, I do think there could be several improvements.
I made a reservation for what looked like a fun hotel. During the reservation process and subsequent emails, check-in was listed as starting at 9am. Check-out at 11am.When I called the hotel the day before, and the office was closed at 7pm, I went to the website. There was an added paragraph in yellow that said that due to covid 19, check-in was only between 1-3pm. No check in after. When I had to cancel my reservation because I could not arrive by 3pm, they thought I should still pay for my reservation! I received no communication about the changes to check-in time. Luckily, the 3rd party service I used, refunded my money completely, and helped me get another hotel room. I wish Id been able to stay.
This hotel is a lot better than expected. We booked the place very last minute on Hotel Tonight. It was too much of a bargain to give up even though it had bad reviews on there. We ended up giving it a chance and our stay was better than anticipated. The staff here are very nice and helpful. The room and building is a bit old but they did a good job renovating - it does not feel old and creepy but a decent place to stay. Other reviews said the bathroom are old and disgusting but it was very clean and new. Not a bad place if you are on a budget and staying in San Francisco. There is a 24 hours Walgreens right next door if you need anything. Good value for location, room, and service. Recommend!
Not a bad place in terms of hostels I suppose, although Id never stayed in a hostel before so I suppose I have nothing to compare it against except hotels. It wasnt bad. I was traveling for work with my kid and wasnt looking for a hostel. I had no idea thats what I was booking. They were gracious enough to refund me. If I were a minimalist that was on a budget and enjoyed hostels Id book it. It just wasnt my scene. It was quiet, clean, and the room type I had didnt have a shared bathroom. BUT having to explain why the cable doesnt work, and why someone has a sock hanging on their doorknob to my kid- had to check out.
1. The room is a small box with very hard uncomfortable mattress and minimal other furniture. Setup is more like a dorm room than hotel room.2. The rooms use physical keys and a fob instead of cards which have been the standard in even budget hotels for over 20 years. I asked for 2 keys (one for my wife) and they said they only had one key for our room in the building. When the key got lost in an Uber, they charged us $50 to replace it and didnt replace it, so we were literally escorted into our room at every entrance for 3 days.3. The walls are paper thin and the other guests were making a ton of noise, which the staff had no interest in addressing.4. There is no AC only a fan, and if you open the window to let cool air in, the urine stench of the street and the noise from the bucket drummer guy infiltrate the room.5. The staff was unwilling and unable to print a receipt or invoice for my stay (which is common for expense accounts)... So I got some useless paper that looks like a notepad print out.Overall there was a general lack of service, comfort, willingness to be helpful. I understand that its less expensive than most of the competition, and I didnt expect luxury, but the lack of professionalism was off-putting.
I did a reservation from may 16th to the 23th thought booking and they send an email a couple of days before my check in telling me that they have to change the reservation to another hotel. This new relocation it was in The Bartlett hotel which was a complete different hotel: the entry smell really bad,the room was really old and they pretend to charge us with the same price as appears in booking and just for 2 persons (we are 3), this place is just horrible I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE AT ALL
This hotel is very conveniently located and a lil vintage gem in the city. Its small lobby is cute and inviting. The receptionist was an angel and super helpful. We dropped off our luggage at their sister location before check in across the street and had an equally as lovely experience. Our room was spacious and had everything we needed! Bed was surprisingly cozy!
I was visiting San Francisco for about a day so I was looking for an inexpensive option. The Herbert Hotel seemed ideal since it was close to where I wanted to visit. Wow, sometimes the cheapest option isnt all that pleasant.I chose a room with a shared bathroom down the hall. I knew that going in when I booked the room so no problem. It was after check in when the fun began. There was an adjoining room that was separated by a single door. I could clearly hear the conversation in my neighbors room. Im glad they were only talking. The real fun part started after the lights went out.As a precursor to understanding what happened next Ill through in this detail. They use remote controls for the room lights and ceiling fan. Can you guess what happened next? Some of the neighbors were on the same frequency so I was woken up at about 11:00 PM with my lights turning on. Then about 15 minutes later the fan went to high speed. Being woken up by the lights put me in fight or flight mode and I didnt sleep well the rest of the night. Additionally, I had to battle the lights and fan off and on throughout the night.Aside from that issue it was okay for the price, but I wouldnt stay there for free with the way the remotes work.
Visited a friend for an afternoon. Lots of natural light, refrigerator, queen size bed, private bathroom, 1 chair, no desk or table but small counter substitute with coffeemaker. Its clean and attractive with a bit of contemporary style. One brick wall, one muted medium blue, two creamy white. Enough space that three of us could socially distance 10 feet apart.
I was here from work the location is great. It is a small room with a double bed and sink and refrigerator and a TV. You do have to share a shower and toilet with other rooms. The staff is super nice in the room is super clean. There is no central heater air but there is ceiling fan and you can open the windows to get cooled off. Its a great place to stay especially since you only spend the evening in your hotel room.
Their customer service is terrible! I had previously paid for my room online but when I arrived at the hotel, exhausted after a day travelling, the lady at the reception told me they were overbooked! They had given my room to someone else. I didn’t even know it was possible. Also she was super rude and didn’t seem to care. She then said they had a room available at their other hotel. Firstly I had to walk there with all my bags, also note it’s a super dodgy area. Then I realised their other hotel was super old fashioned and outdated. She even dared saying it was an upgrade. So overall I would really avoid this hotel.
Really nice little place for the price! I really liked how they had full bottles of their toiletries in the bathroom instead of replacing travel-sized ones every day. My only complaints are that the floors were super slippery; I walked on them with socks and nearly did the splits several times. Some of the furniture isnt very stable, and rooms get overheated/freezing very sporadically. But overall its a good room in a great location.
It was a good location and the staff was pretty friendly. Cons are that we were promised breakfast upon reserving and when we showed up we were told there is none. We got no reimbursement for us having to buy our own. We should have been told upon booking. Also the tv was not working in our room. They replaced batteries in a remote which fixed the issue for about 30 minutes then the tv stopped responding. The walls are very thin, we could hear everyone’s conversations. And luckily we were not staying in the middle of summer because there is no AC. Just a fan. Lastly, we only got one key. That was a bit inconvenient also with two people. Overall I would not stay here again.
I was chewed up by bed bugs. After snooping a bit, I found that Iam not the first victim of bed bugs at The Herbert Hotel. They offered me 15% off my stay. The room below me had a sign on the door that stated that pest control was not to enter due to a sensitive tenant. Clearly, pest control is not effective. I can handle a lot, I don’t need to stay somewhere fancy. But if you wouldn’t sleep there or let your sleep there because you know there are bed bugs, how are you going to charge me and let me go through the agonizing pain of bed bug bites?!?! I am aware of the difficulties there are in the industry right now, but this was unacceptable. If it smells weird, it is probably the pesticides. If you are waking up to welts that were not there before you went to bed, guaranteed it is their bed bugs! Years ago I lived in an apartment that had bed bugs and the bites I sustained at The Herbert Hotel were much more plentiful than in that past experience. I would strongly recommend standing somewhere else. I would not trust The Herbert Hotel to be free of bed bugs and if you run into problems with pests, you may just be stuck!
It is clean and location is great. The room itself basic. Lights and shower did not work and the floor is uneven. Please note luggage holding service is not available at the hotel. It is available around the corner at the Bartlett. I would not recommend staying with young children, the windows open fully. When I pointed out the issues I had at checkout, they didnt care.
We stayed there as a family of three in a deluxe room with two queen beds. The room is exactly the same as its official photos on TripAdvisor!Staff was very friendly and helpful!Location was fantastic, right in the heart of SF Downtown. The hotel itself is full of history, and well maintained. We will definitely return, and thank you for hospitality!
Always kind service, always clean, a great steal in a great and accessible area. They have accidentally double charged my card for my most recent stay but I believe it has to do with the way I booked (through a third party) and they always correct it without hesitation. Mistakes can happen and sometimes I find it more valuable to know how it is taken care of to truly know a place and the integrity of staff.Rooms have the amenities you want including a fridge and a hot water kettle.Bags can be held at the nearby sister hotel around the block. In a walkable city like SF, this was a great necessity.
Stayed here in November for a conference. The price was pretty decent so we stayed here for a few days. We got a room with its own bathroom (there is also an option to get a room with a shared bathroom so be aware when making a reservation). The room was pretty basic, it didnt have air conditioning just a ceiling fan and also had a mini fridge (no microwave). The bathroom looked like it wasnt cleaned and the room had a funky smell. The walls are paper thin so you will hear everything from outside. The wifi disconnected constantly so that was a little annoying. But for the price what can you expect? The view was nice though.
I stayed at the Herbert hotel for one night in the shared bathroom. For my purposes of a place to sleep in San Francisco for the night it was fine. It is in a good location, good price for the area. The room itself is a decent size, has a mini fridge and TV as well as a safe. My critique would be that the shared bathroom is too small to be really functional. Fortunately only 4 rooms share it so it was mostly free when you needed it. Basically like a hostel with the shared bathroom. Decent value. Friendly staff.
Decent 2-star hotel in the heart of the city. Clean and no frills; some of the furniture is old, but then again there are nice overhead flat-screen TVs. Rooms can vary, however. I got put into a converted single, and the sound insulation is horrible in that I can hear the neighbor typing on her phone. Still, you get what you pay for, and overall this place is pretty good.
Just so cute and quaint! I only stay for one night and it was very comfortable. I got a room with my own bathroom. The bathroom has a door on the opposite side leading to another room. I can hear people easily so Id suggest just closing your bathroom door to minimize the noise. Very basic amenities. They have a hand out with all the info you need about your stay and suggestions on what to do around the city.
Stayed here for a brief stay in SF with my mother. Hotel was ok, nothing special, but done the job for us in our short time - if wed been in town for a longer period wed have wanted a bigger/better place. Is in excellent location, cant fault that all. Found the staff to be quite poor tbh - didnt seem to really know what to do or what was going in etc when checking people in .One of the beds had a stain on the sheets when we got back to the room in evening - I said something about it at front desk and we went for a bite to eat. Upon coming back to the room, they hadnt changed the sheets, theyd just laid clean ones on the top of the bed as if to say do it yourself ! (Between me and mum we quickly changed the bed and went to sleep after a long day out. Our thought being, by the time the lad on reception gets someone to change it wed have done it ourselves. )Location is definitely the best thing about this place. Right near all the shops in Union Square, the famous cable cars, the Bart station stop, plenty of eating and drinking spots in & around that area. As I said though, if staying for a longish period of time maybe look elsewhere. We were only in SF for a couple of days on this occasion and not in the room much so it was ok.
The location is great. Right on the Old Trolley line that is a block away from the bottom of Powell where it starts. The price CANNOT be beat. The room had a bit of a dorm feel to it, but it had everything you need. Spacious private bathroom. Staff was kind and answered questions. Are there homeless outside, yes that goes for all of SF areas that I saw, but it is a very safe area with a nice Walgreen next door with anything you. Union Square is very close.I was solo for a work trip. Highly recommend for the price.
The location is AMAZING and the bed was comfy — if you just want a clean bed and a warm shower, the Herbert (and their sister hotels, Stratford and Bartlett) are unbeatable in SF!That said, I wish theyd spend a bit more on quality — everything felt like they got the cheapest option, even when that resulted in things falling apart
We visited San Francisco for 3 nights and stayed at the Herbert for the full length of the trip. The staff is very welcoming. The overall ambiance is lively and hip. If you are looking for luxury and privacy, this may not be the place to go as walls are thin and bathrooms/showers are on the floor (shared) rather than in the rooms. Nonetheless, if you want a clean place to lay and rest whilst spending all your time exploring the city, I highly recommend the Herbert.
Decent hotel for the price and location. Its set up something like dorm rooms. But an attached bathroom can be provided. Free WiFi is included! No great luxuries found at the higher branded hotels but youre in the city to enjoy it not stay in the room.Rooms were a decent size but our floors were leaking water and the beds need to be replaced. Very noisey and slumped in to sleep comfortably.
Was not aware that half the units here have no shower or washrooms. I guess thats what you get when prices get raised 3x for conferences. There is a single shower and a single toilet on one floor. Theres a poorly soundproofed passthrough door between every two units and I can hear every sound when the other guests with a toilet decides to use it. Next time I guess we have to pay 500+ per night instead of 300 next time. They get two stars instead of one for nice staff and relatively clean facilities. I suppose one could give them high points if it was considered a step above a hostel.
Before turning on the lights as I entered the room, I saw a cockroach scurry across the floor into the bathroom. Ten minutes later I noticed a bigger one on the wall.Couldnt use the HDMI input of the TV (which was quite old) because a button on the remote was broken. Ill give a star for the friendly customer service and another star for good experiences here in the past.
Front-desk staff were nice. But it is a scary neighbourhood and Im glad we didnt stay too long. Lots of homeless, like a ridiculous amount. One was even obstructing the front entrance to the hotel. Street hustlers/scammers in the area too. The building itself is quite dodgy, thin walls, thin floors, loud elevator - it gets very noisy there. We got a deluxe room with city views, but it was still very very small, couldnt even open the bathroom door without it banging into the toilet. Poor use of the very limited space, and not enough power points to get by. The view was just of an alley way and another building - pretty grim. Only got one room key and it was difficult to use. Sheets were blood-stained. I reckon the building should be torn down to be honest, its crap and useless, but the room set-ups, housekeeping, and unsafe neighbourhood really put the nail in the coffin for this place. Wasnt cheap either.
The location is great! Its right next to a Walgreens so you can buy anything you may have forgotten and its close to many forms of transit and attractions. The price is good for downtown SF and the staff are friendly. If you book through their website you get free breakfast for two at the Barrette Hall (they serve AMAZING WAFFLES).The room we got was pretty small but it was perfect for our needs. The mattress that we had was a firm foam (which I didnt find comfortable but my boyfriend enjoyed it) and pillows are kind of lumpy or flat, but the sheets and duvet are very cozy. You might want to bring ear plugs or a sound machine if youre a light sleeper as the street below can be a bit noisy. The only real problem I had was with the bathroom. It wasnt very clean. The floor tiles need a good scrub along with the bathtub. The sink leaked, the bathtub didnt drain all the way (thered always just be a puddle of water in the middle), and the shower curtain rod was slanted so the shower curtain would slowly slide open as you showered. Also I think the radiator leaked... There was just a random puddle in our room and we couldnt find the cause other than the radiator.Overall Id stay here again.
Okay hotel, great location. Our room was a decent size with a window overlooking Powell St. There was a ceiling fan in the room which didnt offer much cooling so we had to open the window onto the street at night which was quite loud. There was an easy to use safe in the room, a TV and a fridge. In the lobby there was a microwave and some laundry machines which were I think available for use by guests, however I didnt try using them. The location of the hotel was ideal. 2 minutes from any form of public transport and in the very city center. 2 doors down from the hotel there is a Walgreens(supermarket/pharmacy) and nearby there is a Westfield Shopping centre, along with many other big brand stores in the area. I would recommend this hotel purely for its location.
A Nightmare since the very arrival: no hot water in the shower, hairdryer not working, and the room was dirty. As if the noise in the room was not enough, the radiator has started to whistle and become very hot at 6am in the morning, making the room extremely hot (were currently in July) and leaking water all over the floor, where I had to position my luggage since there was no other space left. Dont go there.
Was everything I needed including its location near to everything in the downtown area, comfy bed, quiet at night, hot shower, helpful staff. Not 5* luxury but 5* convenience for the price. Would stay again when attending next years conference. Oh and it has the historic Powell Street trams passing by as you can see from my photos 😃
Location excellent, value for money very good but this is a basic hotel with no frills and it can be very noisy. It is very clean and housekeeping were just terrific. It does have washing, drying, a drink machine and microwave facilities on a shared floor which is helpful. Its also very close to all public transport options SF has to offer, you can get anywhere from here.
A solid 3 star hotel - the great part being the location, very close to restaurants/shopping near Union Square. Clean and simple. Make sure you are aware which room you are booking - with bathroom and with a shared hallway bathroom. Of note, the hotel is on Powell Street which has the street cars, so if you are sensitive to noise, either chose somewhere else or ask for a room in the back of the property away from the street.
If youre looking for a great location, walking distance for everything youve founded. However the rooms are spartane and quite simple. Bed is not fantastic, but for few nights is ok.Hot water in shower, but the water had very low pressure (room 615). We asked to change the bulb light without success.Free and reliable WiFi.
Our 3-night stay this June was very disappointing. We arrived late, and upon entering our room, noticed the adjoining door in our room was wide open on our side. The handle was completely missing from the door (thus couldn’t be shut nor locked). The door that belonged to the adjoined room was shut and locked. I went down to the front desk to see if they could fix the door or switch our room, and we were told they’re sold out for the night. The desk attendant came to look at our door and finally told us we were connected to a room that was under renovation and that no guests would be there during our stay. With it being late in the night, we reluctantly agreed, even though it didnt seem secure. On the third day of our stay, we 100% heard other guests in the adjoined room - meaning those guests had 24/7 access into our room had they simply opened their door. We had a busy schedule in SF so I contacted the hotel after we returned home to inform them of the room situation. This time, we were told the adjoined room wasnt being renovated, but rather – our door supposedly opens up to a built-in wall in the other room that the guests in the other room can’t access. I cant attach a picture to a google review, but it was clear this was not the case (not to mention a completely absurd explanation). Because I felt I was being lied to, I asked for evidence/pictures of this. Never heard back. Nothing was done – no apology even. Just lies. It’s clear they care very little about the security / safety of their guests.
As one of the cheapest options around Union Square, I was expecting much worse, but the lobby and rooms turned out to be fairly chic, even though very simple. I had a room without an en suite bathroom, although it had a sink/vanity. So you would use the shared toilet room and separate shower room in the hallway. It worked out really easy, theyre single-user one-at-a-time rooms that you can lock with an occupied/vacant indicator on the door. The toilet and shower room were always free when I needed them... only 4 rooms per floor are shared-bath rooms, and you can always go to another floor to use its shared toilet/bath if your floor is occupied. The biggest drawback to this hotel is the super thin walls. You can hear your neighbors next to you clear as day. Our other neighbors realized this and it seemed like everyone was whispering as not to desturb the other, which was nice, but it could have gone the opposite way with lost sleep.I would comeback because of the price, but the thin walls are almost a deal breaker. The TVs are small and dated (at least in my room) and have a crappy analog standard def signal thats semi static-y because its probably getting split from one source 60 times.WiFi was good however with a good signal throughout the hotel and fast enough to stream Netflix.
Before you discard this review for being one star, understand that this is not written out of anger but pure observation. I have never checked my bed for syringes until I checked into this hotel. The floors of my room were uneven due to the building being older than this country and the bathrooms are stocked with half a ply toilette paper. I wouldnt wish the pain of wiping with this stuff on my worst enemy. The only solid part about this hotel is the location and honestly I would rather sleep on a friends couch than ever come here again.
Clean. Quiet. Comfortable. Right in the middle of all the action in Union Square. Centrally located. As a San Francisco resident I suggest the Herbert Hotel to my visitors AND when my apartment was being renovated for two months I lived at the Herbert and would do it again...Thanks Everyone!!!
Clean, simple, and in a great location. Some floors belong to The Pod Room on Powell.Locker space could be a bit bigger but enough for a small carry on and a bag pack.Price is fair. Don’t expect anything fancy but perfect for those on a budget.Apparently the other pod room is equipped with key cards but this one uses a standard set of keys.If you forget toothpaste or need a quick snack, Walgreens is literally next door.Forget to bring enough clean underwear? H&M is across the street.
Nice, quaint hotel in a great central location. Came here for a few days for a conference so it was relatively close to get to and fro the hotel. Only thing I would comment on is of the 5-6 days I stayed here, wifi was not working (little if not at all). As a result, could not work/connect my laptop thru Internet the majority of the time. Other than that, it was a pleasant stay overall for the value of price paid.
We chose this place because was the only one available with short notice. Central location and very kind staff, comfortable but small bed, room clean but very basic. The shower requires engineering skills to make it work/ set temperature. Ok choice if you dont find anything better for the same price
Location is the only great thing about this place. Room size is OK (its just a room with a bed nothing more fits) . Its more of a hostel setup, shared bathrooms or use the ones in the hall, unless you can request your own. Also note No valet parking. you need to park down the block at the OFarrell parking garage.
Irish girl on the front desk didnt seem to helpful, more interested in checking her computer than taking to guests. We only found out about the possibility of doing our laundry and the lounge room as we were leaving, as it was next to the storage room. Our private shared bathroom room was linked to another room via a locked bathroom door, we could hear everything that happened in their room and Im sure vice versa. The hotel didnt seem too full, surely we could have been placed in a room that want joined by paper thin doors?
Amazing location, service, and style. Clean rooms, but the only thing is the shared restrooms and showers are very small and not very pleasant. Also, for some reason we have a door to a bathroom that is locked, but our neighbors have access to it so we hear them in their which is strange.
Booked this hotel, because the price was reasonable and the images and website confirmed the hotel was remodeled recently. When we got the hotel they “upgraded” us to a different hotel up the street. The hotel, “the Stratford”, is not remodeled and is showing up on an internet that the rooms cost less than we paid.I would book with caution, in our experience highly unethical!
Loved the Herbert! Such a cool vibe, design is nice, was clean, affordable, and super central too. Highly recommended if youre doing any of the bus tours etc, 2 blocks from main public bus to the warf, surrounded by loads of restaurants and different food places (recommend the Asian food place across the road from chipotle. Also right next to a parking lott and a very nice 24/7 Walgreens too, handy for snacks, cheap water etc. Concierges are very nice and professional. We had the (premium?) shared bathroom room on the 5th floor, room 507. We were of course a bit dubious about the shared bathroom thing, but it was actually rather fantastic! Very nice room; tv, fridge, queen bed, ceiling fan, wardrobe, & fast wifi. Very clean, and very chic! The shower and toilet areas were very clean and well stocked. The shower had large pump-able bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body soap (all of which smelt deliciousBtw). Very well kept. Only shared with 4 other rooms on that 1 floor, so wasnt crowded either.Recommend the shared bathroom option personally, as it saves a bunch and still ensures a nice room etc. Certainly what Ill be doing whenever i go back to san fran.Highly recommend this place.
It was a good localization and clean, however my room was really noisy, I could hear everything from the street and the curtains wouldnt make the room dark enough. The worst of all is that I check-out in August and I STILL HAVENT RECEIVED MY SECURITY DEPOSIT BACK! Thats an absurd!
Enjoy downtown San Francisco in a down to earth fashion. If youre looking for extra frills and lavish accommodations, look elsewhere. Rooms are consistent with a building of this age. The shared bathroom and shower may not be what many like, but again, this is typical of hotels this age. The Mexican food diner at lobby level was very quaint and great food. Pick up a San Francisco City Pass and hop on the Cable Car on the corner outside the hotel. Plenty of immediate attractions and tons to see and explore.
Room is poor, the bathtub is dirty, wireless is unstable, the blinds dont shield much from the light (I could easily read at 3am with all blinds shut and no lights on), and persistent whistling noise which had me have a headache every morning. In addition, it took the front deck clerk half an hour to locate our rooms key. Please do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.

2022-06-05Very simple accommodation. No reception, just rooms. It’s beginning of June and already quite warm. Our room only had a fan and we had cloudy weather. Wouldn’t recommend in hot summer.Shower door had fallen out, instead of just repairing the hinges with a couple of screws they just locked the door. You pay for what you get. It’s oké, though slightly disrespectful and not really service oriented. Which even as a cheap hotel, would be nice I guess. I mean how difficult is it to find someone who can put in a few screws…..

2022-02-18The only reason this even gets a single star instead of nothing is because Dora, the front desk worker, was very helpful and considerate and made the stay a tiny bit more bearable.Firstly, the radiator that is “timed” twice a day kicks on and off randomly, and we first had a broken radiator making popping and hissing noises. Talked to other people in the hotel who had the same problems. Moved to a different room, and the radiator was fine and not leaking this time. The bathroom key works sometimes or not at all, there is no AC at all and it gets incredibly hot (the hotel swears this isn’t an issue for most guests but… read the reviews dude). The noise is ridiculous, not even from the street but from people in the hotel with TVs up all the way.You can’t even go next door to Walgreens without being harassed by homeless people. And if you need anything from the hotel, they won’t answer their phones. The worst hotel stay I’ve ever had and definitely going to a better hotel in the future. My recommendation is any other hotel in this area, or even in the Marina District. They have better amenities, service, and prices. All I got from this hotel was the feeling of being scammed and wondering where the heck did all the money go into I paid for this room? Because this place is a dump!

2022-05-17Overall a great experience in this relatively cheap hotel surrounded by extremely expensive ones. The only issue that I had was rooms were relatively hot and there was no air-conditioning so I had to open up the windows to get the cool air in. Rooms were very clean, there is a sink available inside the room. Restrooms and shower are available in the hallway and very clean and I never had the issue of rest rooms being busy. You can get an attached restroom for more fees.

2022-06-12Positive: Location. Good room size. Good decor. Negative: Wi-Fi didn¿t work reliably. Couldn¿t use zoom. Bathtub didn¿t drain well during shower. Bed was soft and side slightly broken. No a/c so need to keep window open onto noisy street.

2022-06-30I recently stayed at The Herbert hotel and I have to say that my stay was very unpleasant since the moment I arrive.Upon check in I asked the front desk agent for a bell cart, as you guys have no parking or bell man. I had to do 4 trips from the parking structure! The front desk agent also only have me one key to get in the front of the Hotel Herbert. I called and informed that I needed another key for my partner and the agent told me that I had to go all they way back to the other hotel Stratford which is a block away because check in is not at The Herbert Hotel! You would think that the front desk would go out their way to deliver the key after no help was offer with the bell cart.Another key of information that your front agent should do is inform your guest about the rooms not being service and an additional charge which is not stated on the reservation $60. Additionally they never gave me any information of hotel amenities and I had to call again for wifi information. And also every time I asked for a manager they told me that no one was available!

2022-06-11Negative: We could not pull a car up to the front because it was a cablecar only street. Then we had to walk to another hotel to check in. It would have been nice to know these things prior to arrival. Once we were settled it was a great place.

2022-06-19Worth its money! The bed is comfy enough. Dont take a room below 5th floor, otherwise youll be seeing a brick wall 5 meters away from you.

2022-06-21No reception, smelly and dirty corridors. The beds were elevated, really weird concept.

2021-09-28Excellent Rooms - the photos are exactly what you get. The hotel has just recently reopened since Covid (Sept 2021) and has limited housekeeping due to covid (charged at $35-50) . For free, the Herbert Hotel will arrange fresh sheets and towels but you have to make the bed yourself if you want a re-fresh mid stay.A lot of the hotel is rented out long term to permanent residents. Its worth mentioning just in case you are next to the guy with the really loud TV. When you choose a room you may have to sacrifice the view for the peace and quiet. I found this to be a blessing, as I had a great view for the first 4 days with a little noise, and then went to a very quiet room with a more obscured view of Powell St.The Herbert Hotel is run by the Bartlett Hotel across the street. The Herbert has no staff on site and pretty much runs on a key card system which is very private and quite nice and hassle free. The elevator to the 5th floor was very quick and I didnt really ever have to wait for long. The staff I did see - housekeeping and maintenance - were very professional as you would expect. I ran into a couple of other guests but generally felt I had the place to myself.Room wise there is a lovely new bed and suspended furniture including a desk to work at and a safe. There were plenty of power sockets and the wifi was super fast. If you are looking for a hotel on a budget in a great location - this is the one for you. Remember you are paying for what you get - this is no frills, but what you get is done great! * And great water pressure too and a huge refrigerator for my daily leftovers and milk for my coffee.TV wise - it is quite limited to US cable channels. I found plugging in my MAC and watching netflix on my MAC ended up being my best bet. I was able to eventually also set up my new Sonos One Alexa but thats another story...
