I had a great experience working with Jessica at SG Real Estate and than Jody at the apartment complex. Jessica was very helpful and quick to answer my questions. She made the move in process flawless. Jody is the on-site manager at the apartment complex and is honestly the best. She goes above and beyond to take care of everyone living at the complex. Great experience.
(I copied and pasted some from another review because I had the exact same experience)If I could give SG a negative star review I would. From the moment I signed the lease this management company has been an absolute nightmare. On move in my apartment was not properly cleaned, appliances were not properly inspected, parking fobs were not ready, keys were not ready and it took weeks and weeks of me hassling them to get anything done. After being passed around from staff member to staff member, it eventually got to the point where I had to camp out at their office during business hours to have my issues addressed. Small things eventually turned into bigger issues as weeks went on. My main statement to the manager I spoke to was, I feel like you guys dont care. This feeling has persisted throughout my short tenancy and I am not the only one.The building I live in is poorly managed. The staff that clean the building are friendly, however, they do a poor job of keeping things looking nice and the level of service is not reflective of the rental rate. Garbage rooms over flowing with immense amount of cardboard and waste (I cleaned it up myself), common areas that are mopped, but nothing else cleaned (food waste left out for over a month), hallways and the courtyard not swept and landscaping that is neglected. The building itself is beautiful and in a nice area, but after only being open for about a year, the wear is already showing.Upon move out there was attempted theft from our security deposit for incorrect charges that each of SG’s internal departments cannot keep track of.In summary, if you intend to rent at a property managed by SG I highly recommend reconsidering. If you do rent with them, be prepared to pay to have repairs completed in your suite, to clean up human urine in the elevator and to fend for yourself.SG does not care, is poorly managed and has no idea what is going on at their buildings.*If you are an owner of a building that SG manages, please reconsider! Your tenants are NOT HAPPY!*
Avoid SG Real Estate if you can. I am in one of their beautiful properties in Oakland which is the only positive thing I can say: The actual building and area is great. The management is the worst I have ever experienced. Ive lived all over the Bay and the country and SG Real Estate takes 1st prize for being the worst. My partner and I were sold on the unit as we moved in from out of state with the contingency that we would have two parking spaces. Not only did they have us sign a lease and pay for both spaces but when we arrived I noticed someone kept parking in my space. Left a not the first day and let it go. the second day I waited for the driver who was a tenant that was ALSO paying for that spot.A week went by me emailing and calling SG Real Estate to understand what was going on with the parking space I paid for (went to the office but it was closed due to COVID). Meanwhile my partner and I were missing keys to the apartment we were paying for (never received all of our keys!).Two weeks go by and we only get any hint that SG Real Estate still exists after I come home with a sticky note on the floor next to my door from my neighbor saying he has keys for me. My neighbor had my keys dropped off to him (I guess he must work for SG Real Estate???) to give to me.I disregarded the fact that I had to go to my neighbors door (he doesnt know me and I dont know if hes comfortable with a stranger coming to his home) thought wow finally they listened. NO apparently SG Real Estate thinks it is safe to have a lock box with extra keys hanging from the front door. Apparently that was broken into and the only reason I got keys was because SG Real Estate had to change the locks to the building after the break in.....There is a fresh new lock box back on the front door now.I learned that only maintenance responds to calls or email (maintenance team you all are the MVPs! ) so I emailed them about my situation and they forwarded it to the appropriate people.Jessica Vernaglia you said verbatim I may have mistakenly double booked parking. (I have the receipts btw) then proceeded to say how you have done things historically. No apology no trying to make it right even though we had a deal and I know you needed to rent this unit that was sitting on the market for a couple months vacant. You cheated us and you and your team should be ashamed for your dishonestly and extremely poor customer service!I am an irate customer who has no choice but to be locked in this situation for a year.Avoid SG Real Estate. Now I know why they call this place the asylum. You either have to be crazy to live here or this place will drive you crazy.Best of luck to you all who expect decent professionalism and customer service at the bear minimum because I doubt you will find that here.
So apparently they have time to comment on google reviews but not to CONTACT a potential leaser that has been ghosted for 2 weeks now?Me and my group toured the Stranda on a Thursday and loved it, however the unit we were interested in was not available to tour until the next day, so we agreed to come back on the Friday where we waited over an hour for someone to show up but nobody did.No response on email or phone contact was made for a week until I took it upon myself to contact AGAIN through apartments.com and they responded in a day saying they had an emergency at another property and to reschedule the tour.I sent that email a week and a half ago and there has been no response despite the countless follow up emails.Me and my group are students and are running out of time to find housing, so this is just the PERFECT situation to be in with our circumstances.Maybe they will finally contact me after reading this review.

Good luck getting a hold of anyone ever once youve moved out. Still waiting on my security deposit and no one will respond. Am considering legal action at this point. Save yourself the headache and dont do business with these people.Edit 4/7/2021 in response to SG Real Estate:I did finally receive my deposit back. However, it wasnt until I mentioned potential legal action. I understand that times are tough, especially with office transitions but I work in customer service and for NO ONE to respond to multiple emails or phone calls even just confirm receipt of message is unacceptable. If the company is super busy, put an auto message on the email accounts so that we know to allow more time for you to respond. Anything less than that is unacceptable. You wanna do better for your clients. Start there.
If only words could describe how awful this organization is. Cannot get any repairs or fixes done without hounding them non-stop so much that it borders on assault. Even if they acknowledge an issue they will just send an email out for maintenance indicating a technician will be scheduled for maintenance but will not actually schedule anything until you reach out multiple times. Parking fees are through the roof. However, if there is any unfulfilled paperwork on your side then they will suddenly become instantly available all day.Only live here if it’s your life’s goal to be treated with no respect and you want to do your own maintenance around the apartment.
Property manager, Cristina, was professional and a pleasure to deal with. She promptly had someone sent over to address a maintenance issue at the apartment we recently moved into (window screens were worn and needed replacing). Now we have new screens and are 100% bug free, just in time for the nicer weather!
I recently moved out of their building on University Ave and it has been a nightmare dealing with them for the past 3 years, they offers no help but wants to milk you dry as much as they can.1. Packages constantly get stolen. I have emailed them many times regarding this issue and suggested installing camera in the lobby. However, their response was surveillance camera doesnt prevent theft.2. Walls/ceilings are thin, you can constantly hear your neighbors especially from upstairs - stomping, running, walking, talking, singing, phone vibrating. I have brought the issue with noise complaints but never heard back from the management.3. Appliances are old. The fridge is insanely noisy and old, they did nothing to repair it. The water pressure was too weak, and when you shower you have to be careful when your neighbors are flushing or using the sink, otherwise, you might get a second-degree burn. The heater never worked. Even though the appliances are already old when you move in, they will charge you fees when you move out claiming its your fault instead.4. Ridiculous customer service. I have emailed them regarding my hardship during COVID-19 but they offered no help. Instead, they took for almost a month to reply to my email. I used my deposit as my last months rent but they still charged me an unreasonable amount of cleaning fee for $170 (including a $20 trash removal fee for 3 small items I have left in the studio). I dont want to fight and dispute the insane charges with them anymore since I want to be done with SG Real Estate ASAP.I wish I knew how terrible they are before I moved in. Please save yourself future headaches from dealing with them. I am glad to be done with the slumlord once and for all.
Because I work in the industry as a Leasing Specialist and Assistant Manager for mid-rise/high-rise new construction in the Bay Area, I am VERY PARTICULAR in my requests, how/where I choose to live, and quite knowledgeable in Fair Housing. SG Real Estate has been a PLEASURE to work with for my renting needs, especially given the fact I can be viewed as difficult by some.SG Real Estate keeps their properties CLEAN & well maintained for the most part. Like any place, there are tenants that do not follow rules and leave things disorderly, however, that is no fault of SG. When Ive made them aware of issues they have always been highly responsive and reactive to any & all issues. The rents are always within reason for the area and product being offered. The application process/fees are reasonable and user friendly- you usually get your screening results within 72-hours. Their written communication is thorough and detailed and they offer a variety of properties to accommodate all needs for any potential renter. Now to the staff- :) :)Im sure I annoy the mess out of all of them, LOL! However, it is not intentional and I mean well. Ive had the pleasure of working with Jessica, Cristina, Shannon, and Thany- theyre all AMAZING!!! :) Each woman has been of assistance to me and I am greatly appreciative of work. If youre looking for a well-maintained, CLEAN, reasonably priced, and PROFFESSIONALLY managed place to live then SG Real Estate surely has a place for you to call home. Check out all their active listings on their website.Happy Home Hunting :) :) :) !!!!
My experience with SG real estate gave me invaluable help as I looked for housing. Jorge in property management was super friendly and responded promptly to each concern I had. He helped me every step of the way, guiding a tour of the building and ultimately being transparent about prices and options each building we looked at. The space was student friendly as its location was close walking distance to anywhere a student may need to go.
I had some difficult moments with SG. I ended up calling Christina in property management and she actually answered. Not only that, but she fully helped me with an issue my parents were experiencing. She got the job done in 1 day. She let me know that the job was done before I had to call again. She is well worth the 5/5 review. Thanks Christina.
I have lived in the same building for 15 years through at least 4 property management companies. SG Real Estate is the worst of all of them. They started managing in May. I have spoken with several other tenants in the building who confirm the same thing. When as they request, you report problems through their website portal, they dont respond unless you bug them further and threaten to involve the Rent Board or housing inspector. I have made at least 6 maintenance requests since May and they havent been fixed until I escalated it. Some are still not fixed after 3 months. When there was a sewer backup in the laundry room, it took them two weeks to clean the sewage that had covered the entire floor. They began after we contacted the housing inspector. There is a broken window in the common area and outside doors that dont close properly, so you have to make sure they are closed. It took them 5 days to replace a carbon monoxide alarm that was beeping every 30 seconds 24/7 . And those are just some of the things that I have witnessed personally, theres a much longer list of problems from other tenants. You can also check Yelp and see a list of 1 star reviews.Do not rent an apartment that this company is managing.
Not the best real estate company. Paul was helpful. Other employees here either doesnt respond to emails and returns voicemails. We had some issues while residing here. The families residing in this building were nice.I am not sure how the real estate had the time to review and answer my ratings 2 months after moving out but does not have the time to answer my emails during my stay here.
I dont usually post google reviews, but if youre thinking of leasing from these people - DONT. Not only was the apartment I leased a dump, but SG didnt even give me keys to the front door or the laundry room! Not only that, I had a rodent issue that they didnt fix for months!! No response until I refused to pay rent. Even then they couldnt get on top of the problem. I ended up terminating my lease 5 months in. And I havent received my security deposit yet - its been months since I moved out! These people literally have no idea what theyre doing, and it shows.
Since taking over the Property Management of our site we have been very pleased with SG. We have been in our apartment for 17 years and things wear out. We have had water heater, blinds, hall lights, faucets replaced.SG has been very responsive to our request for repairs. Thanks to all in the office for your excellent service.
It is amazing that this company has time to respond to reviews however no time for potential new residents. They replied once and asked for me to send in ID to view an apartment but then I didn’t hear anything else even after sending follow-up emails and making follow-up calls. I certainly hope this lack of interest is not because of the color of my skin. Things that make you go Hmmm?! Their loss.
I have to share that Cristina Martinez was the best property manager I have ever had! And felt that a positive review is the least I can do to show my appreciation. Recently helped me with a heat issue that saved me a lot of stress. I definitely would refer her to anyone out there looking for one.
I had lived at the same property for 2 years then SG real estate started managing it and my whole world has been torn upside down. All utilities went up about 30% when they started making me pay them instead of the utility companies. My toilet has been locked up for three days with no help on the horizon from these people. They accepted our rent payment then sent it back to us a month later saying that they were planning to evict us. So for a month we thought we were fine what were they doing for that month? You cant get any help from these people theyre just a horrible horrible company worst place Ive ever lived and I used to love it. And there are dead rats next to the mailbox.
Absolutely, terrible. They do not care about tenants health, or safety. My apartment isn’t even up to code. My stove is plugged into an extension cord, that goes through my kitchen cabinets, out the wall and into an outlet. My oven is broken. We have 2 burners out of 4 on the stove that works. Fence is falling apart, fridge and freezer is full of mold. We didn’t have a working heater for 2 months. We never even got a key, the leasing manager told me to take the keys out of the lock box hanging on the gate. SMH. Should have been a sign. They had my fridge “cleaned” it’s gross, I cant use the water or ice machine because it’s full of mold. There was no mirror in my bathroom, there are not closet doors in one of the bedrooms. Do not rent from these people! Or if you do, maybe rent from one of their nicer properties, then maybe they might care about how they treat you if your paying more than $1,700 a month, cause that’s what I pay, and they act like I should be hiring people to fix these things myself.
Whatever you do dont rent with these people. They tell you one thing and then say something else the next day. Oh yeah and get ready to pay a long game of constantly calling. Beyond unprofessional and Edwin Palafox had the nerve to say to my roommate it was irresponsible to pick a roommate with bad credit. This was TOTALLY messed up due to the fact that I explained the personal reasons as to why my credit was the way it is. Find a better place to go to that wont discriminate against you and actually cares.
SG Real Estate is a nightmare to work with. They are generally unresponsive and are incapable of managing their properties.I live in a location with over 30 units and SG was recently hired to be the new property managers. They are failing to manage the communal spaces. Our communal dumpster is regularly overfilled and SG refuses to be consistent about addressing this with the tenants. We have furniture that is being placed outside of the dumpster which is causing our property to look like an eyesore. We have tenants who are frustrated at this entire situation and our behaving in an unruly manner. One tenant threw one of the pieces of furniture over the fence into our neighbors yard and SG Real Estate, 3 weeks later, still has not addressed this nor have they retrieved the piece of funiture. They are not taking care of the cummunal laundry room. The floor is a mess and the garbage gets to be overflowing. Lost clothes do not get disposed of and surfaces are not getting wiped down, as is a property managers job.Last month, several tenants were required to start paying increased rent. However, on our tenant-portal on-line, SG didnt even bother entering our new rent amount. It is insulting.
Cristina was nothing short of a point of contact that gave me amazing assistance! Shes very knowledgeable and professional. She made my needs come first Its comforting to know that there is people like her that actually listen to you and work with you. So hard to find. Most definitely will be going through SG Real estate from now on! Thank you Cristina for all your help and dedication.
Blown away by the experience I have had renting with SG Real Estate. Charles especially has made the whole process flawless & addressed any and all of my concerns and questions. Their transparency, fast communication & kind staff has made my experience perfect. This is a team you can trust.
Impossible to reachFor a company with so many mediums to communicate with, they are impossible to reach. Three events has made me rue the day my landlord sold the building to SG Real Estate. My apartment is currently leaking dirty water from the bathroom vent and Ive been trying to contact them regarding this issue and have not been successful at all.My internet provider and myself have been trying for over 3 weeks now to contact them so that the internet provider may enter the premises and install my connection. Im still without any services.I put in a work order for a mold concern. They told me they would come Thursday or Friday. I took days off from work for this. I was left waiting with no response. AND they closed the work order.I do not recommend any building managed by this company at all.
I was pleasantly surprised at how well this place upholds the standards of a normal Berkeley residence hall, it almost doesnt feel off-campus! It is affordable, any maintenance requests are answered promptly, the halls and bathrooms are cleaned professionally and there is on-site staff always ready to assist you as needed.
I would give them zero stars if I could. Paint is peeling all throughout the bathroom, I’ve seen every type of bug and even (rats). The was only one maintenance man for the entire building(bless his heart, he tries very hard) but he can only be contacted through a portal which could take weeks, Tried calling and was hung up on by an actual staff member. There are bugs surrounding the outside exterior of the apartment. Would not plan to stay here again not even short term. Not even if someone’s paid me. Will be taking further action. Thank you
It was hard to contact people when things turned wrong in the apartment that my friend and I rented. Even when the call got through, I was faced with rudeness. There was a rat in the bathroom, the wall was peeling, there was only one person doing the maintenance for the entire apartment. As for the lobby, there were broken lights and lots of bugs on the outside attracted by the tree.
Hello, I thought I’d share my recent experience with SGW Eeal Estate because they went over and beyond. My younger sister is a student at Cal and need some where to live immediately due to special circumstances so I started searching on the web and found SG Real Estate. I called and spoke to a person named Gracy, she was able to show her 2 apartments in one day and she applied right after viewing. It was over the weekend but Gracy took the time out of her weekend to come meet me and my sister to give us the keys and did a walk through with us! The process took two days and we moved in right away! Thank you for all you did! You guys are amazing
I lost my full set of keys (apartment, mail box, and laundry room). I reached out to SGRealEstate to help with this issue. Cristina was able to provide a prompt and professional service to getting all of these replaced in a happy manner. I was more than pleased with this experience. Thank you.
1. we were stripped of our parking due to construction2. our house was robbed of valuables3. construction made loud noises4. upon moving things were broken and not fixed5. safety was jeopardized due to gate not being fixed6. washing and drying machines were constantly not working7. it took weeks for a maintenance request8. heater was broken and couldnt be fixed9. we have submitted a list of concerns but were met with neglect10. when we moved out we cleaned and painted the house and was still charged $500 for cleaning and painting11. packages were constantly stolen12. amazon hub was broken and hasnt been fixedyour company has showed me that all this was is just business and that you all had no intentions of caring for the tenants or there opinions or concerns
Im trying to contact one of your properties, Bishop Berkeley Apartments, for a potential lease, but there hasnt yet been anyone responding during past week. Ive tried calling countless times but the manager never answers the call; I even tried emailing them multiple times, but no one ever responded. This is extremely unprofessional. Please give me a phone number that can be reached.
I have been trying to reach them for weeks and it seems impossible. We signed a lease agreement with them from June 2020 to May 2021 and they notified us *today* that as of *yesterday* they are not the property manager of our unit complex anymore, without giving us the information of the new property manager. They have, of course, kept our rental and security deposit.Terrible. Avoid at all costs.
I have never lived somewhere where anything I have to say regarding my unit is not a matter to management, I have shown them mold on the walls, stained bathtub that according to them it’s only changed every 20 years but when I ask them when was the last time it got changed they can’t even tell me a date, this company is a joke they don’t care bout your well being or your health I keep trying to get in contact with someone that can finally solve these issues but it’s like talking to a wall I feel like I’m being played with words they don’t care bout what I’m saying they send people that don’t know wat to do with the mold of stained bathroom, my maintenance request get shut down because according to them they gonna send someone to check em out but when that person arrives they don’t even know what to do with it, but they are happy to take ur money when u gotta pay rent, save time and stress not dealing with them, I though it would of been a good experience here in my city but these good for nothing will finesse you and not assume no responsibility, 6 months and I haven’t even met the manager I have no clue who they are or what they can do to help me, I never felt so ignored and like I don’t even matter to them, if you see them run they are just gonnna waste your time and take ur life for granite, still haven’t got my deposit back been over a week since I moved out, so hard to get a hold of anyone these people don’t care bout you or your time, left the unit since 3/31/21 haven’t heard back from no one, I contact them and they act like they don’t know what I’m talking bout, I want my deposit back it has been so hard to reach anyone, considering legal action I shouldn’t have to deal with these headaches it’s affecting me nd my love ones.
This is the worst property management group I’ve seen. From beginning to end, terrible. It’s hard to even understand why they are so bad, but it seems they just do not care. The owner is shady and the property manager for the company, Gracy, is terribly incompetent and lazy. Not one single interaction with them was easy or painless. A lady (tenant)was seriously injured by one of the dogs of another tenant and they did absolutely nothing. This was after SG had been notified months prior that said dog was aggressive. The dog is still off leash and still aggressive and still living on the property after SG stated he and/or the owners would be removed. SG simply does not care about safety or tenant concerns. If you address them, they make you the problem. We have had enough. Run, do not walk, from this company!

2022-06-10I moved into an SG-managed unit in January of this year. But first, IF YOU ARE A TENANT IN BERKELEY AND SG HAS NOT COMPLETED A LEGALLY REQUIRED MAINTENANCE REQUEST, submit an inspection request to the city (Google Tenant Request for Housing Inspection + City of Berkeley)Here are some cool things that have happened since I moved in:-I was given the same keys that were used for the open house-I was not given the code that opens the gate to my building-the laundry room was filthy upon move-in, and Jessica, who sent me a note asking why I rated my move-in low, said that she couldnt do anything about it because the owner does his own building maintenance. The owner of the building is the same owner of SG.-my deadbolt was not up to code (it didnt close). It was only fixed after I submitted an inspection request with the city 38 days after my initial request. Its now loose - but SG backdated the repair completed date to 3 days after I submitted the request. Thats how they have most repairs are completed within three days in their responses.-I had an ant infestation when I moved in. My request to have that fixed was DELETED from the maintenance request system.-my oven is not up to code - it needs to be plugged into an extension cord to turn on. I expect I will also have to submit an inspection request with the city before this gets fixed (same for my now-loose doorknob).-I live in a 6-unit building. There are tenants in my building who leave the building gate open for hours and leave garbage all over the laundry room. SG has not bothered to do anything about this despite my and other tenants requests for action.Based on my interaction with the property management team, I would avoid renting from SG again.

2021-12-28I recently moved in and had great experience with leasing team, especially with Jessica. They provide very instant responses for every inquiry and very helpful. Maintenance is also expedite and gets the job done in time. Overall building condition is clean and cozy. So far I have been provided satisfactory service from SG Real Estate and really appreciate their great job! Keep up your great work, SG real estate staffs!

2022-03-29While I have had a few issues with my apartment, I have to say that the responsiveness of the SG staff is impeccable. Though jobs might take a while to complete, they DO get completed to my satisfaction. My favorite person to deal with is Krystal McMorris in the main office. I have never experienced such sincere, personalized, timely and carrying exchanges with a rental company.

2022-02-26Ive moved in a month ago and Im very happy with the decision. The location is very good, close to the center and a few steps from Traders Joe, very nice quality of the appartement and shared facilities in the building (gym, lobby area, roof terrace). Great communication with the management and maintenance team. The moving in process was very smooth. I recommend!

2021-11-26I looked at dozens of apartments in my hunt for a new place and found that Jorge and Jessica (both from SG) were the most informative, professional and down-to-earth of all of the leasing agents I interacted with. I havent needed to put in any work requests for anything yet but theyve been very helpful and responsive during my move into the apartment. Also, I hope to get a pit bull soon so it was important to me that my new place be dog friendly. I found that many companies advertise as being dog friendly only to tell you about size and breed restrictions when you show up to see the place. SG actually ARE dog friendly. Ive already met two adorable large dogs that live on my floor.

2022-02-10Would not rent from them. At Telegraph Commons, I was told the extra large single was the only unit available, thus I took it. We were not given the option to see the room beforehand. At the time of move-in, I realized I was given the standard size single while paying the extra price. They did not budge when I brought up this fact. They will scam you for the money. Later found out my next-door neighbor with the same sized room was paying $400 less than me per month. The property is at a very loud intersection and there were also constant roach problems in the building. If you can, I would highly recommend you avoid renting from here.

2022-06-03This review is for leasing agent Jorge Del Castillo. Wow! Just Wow! From the first call I made until he provided me the keys he was simply beyond amazing! His service is impeccable. He had the unit painted and ready to go a few days before my move-in! I was short on time so I didnt view the unit beforehand. It was better than the video I saw online! I viewed over 10 places and Jorge was the game changer. He was welcoming, empathic and has great energy! Lets go Jorge! Thank you kind Sir!

2022-02-15My daughter had put in work order many, many times because of the smoke detector was out of order. Its been over 2 weeks, without getting any sleep because of the chirping sounds every 20 seconds. She is going crazy because she is not getting any sleep, cant focus on school work. She is actually thinking about dropping out of the school. You guys are horrible! You dont take your job seriously and dont take students Maintenance matter seriously. If she fails this semester, all thanks to you folks.

2022-03-08Not responsive; elevator in my building often smells like vomit. Despite the seven-day janitorial service, the smell persists for many days. Not ideal.Additionally, there are two push for help buttons on my floor which, when pressed, emit a loud, repeating beeping noise. As far as I can tell, there is no way to turn this off from the building; they have to be shut off from another terminal. This terminal is unmonitored, which leads to multiple days of beeping that is audible from inside the apartment.Note also that this means that, in the case of an actual emergency, the push for help buttons would be useless for actually getting help.Leasing team was quick and made things easy though.

2021-12-15The folks at SG have been extremely helpful with my apartment search and with the management of the places that Ive lived in over the past 5 years!!! Every time I move I chose to do so with SG. Jessica helped me with my leases, Gracy is an amazing property manager and the CEO David is a really good dude. All around great experience with them!
