The times weve been through here in the past 1.5 years neither the diner or motel were open. I dont think they will ever re-open. Right now they are re-plumbing the restrooms so the only options are port a pottys. The gas is probably priced for delivery based on the fact that they are located in the middle of nowhere. The employees are always super friendly and helpful and knowledgeable.Plus they have an awesome dog that hangs around in the store. The sweetest ever!
Found this place by accident while driving through the desert. It’s very weird that’s what makes it cool. There is some interesting history with Amboy and Roy’s. I would recommend stopping by and grabbing some sodas. Apparently soon the diner will be operational which would be great. There are also some cool things near by like the Amboy lions, Amboy crater, and tons more to do in the Mojave national preserve to the north.
This place which is on the original Route 66 is worth stopping just for the nostalgia. Be Sure and stop in the gift shop and get a few items as well as some Route 66 root beer or cream soda or several other varieties. Take a look at the old building next to it honoring the founders. It’s like a snapshot of the past. The current owners are very friendly and will happily tell you all about the history. There is even a functional very small US post office right across the street.
Roys Motel is such a neat place to visit. While its not something to explore alot of theres still alot to do near there. Like the Amboy Crater. The lion statues aswell. There is a gas station in the area which helps alot. But Roys is full of history and its just one of those iconic spots. They recently started to light the sign up again. You can also walk through the old motel rooms there as they are open to the public. This is must stop forsure while youre taking your trip on the good ol historic route 66.
Classic remote desert location on Historic Route 66/National Trails Highway. Theres a convenience store in front, porta-potties for relief, a restored neon sign that would be a beacon from 10 miles away, driving in from the South, and a large motel (currently not in use), school (also not in use), and an air strip. There are a lot of things to look at, and its well worth the stop, even if only to break up the monotony of long-haul desert driving.
Ive past this place soooo many times and never stopped. Today we did and it was worth it! The guy working gave us a little tour out back. We picked up some cool souvenirs and as soon as my boyfriend bought a lucky rabbits foot....I got a call for the job Id been waiting for! This will forever be a stop for me in the future 😎💕
This place is really worth a visit, two reasons 1. Just because it exists on good ol Route 66.A timely rest after a long drive. 2. The people there are really great, friendly honest to goodness workers who obviously want to enlarge the business into what it should be,as it was years ago before the interstate....... a Motel, gas station and bar and more. I really think they deserve OUR (you and me) help to achieve that goal....by visiting them. Good luck all at Roys. Stay safe.Dave the Brit.
Route 66 roadside attraction. The motel is closed , the restaurant is closed, but the convenience store is open and they have gas for sale. They also have port a potties, so, amice little place to take a break from driving, stretch your legs and pick up a souvenir in the store.
We love to visit this place... we have ghost hunted at night, visited the cemetery of shallow graves and been here in the day where they let us go around back and explore the spooky old school...we always nail something up on the pole (3rd time in 5 years) and the owners are great! I got my Amboy tank top here and its my favorite shirt
Awesome place with a special vibe and realy quiet. Nicole the girl who works at the gas station is the nicest person. She was closing up when we showed up but still she tokk care of us and even lit up the sign so that we could take photos. Thank you Nicole! I hope I see you again some day!
Stopped here to do part of an Geocaching Adventure Lab, we went into the Cafe and found it to be an extremely Geocaching friendly place. We enjoyed seeing all the historical sights on Old Route 66 here in Amboy. We visited for awhile, got a cool drink and we were on our way.
What a cool stop along our journey between Las Vegas and Palm Springs. I knew I was in good company when the guy behind the register was wearing a Cleveland Indians cap. This is in Amboy, which is along famous Route 66 and it looks the full part. Grab some snacks and take some snaps!
I was on empty and almost ran out of gas and just barely made it to the gas station. I also paid the price gas was $5.00 a gallon! The café was not up and running yet. The owner is still working on getting drinkable water to the location. The town of Amboy has kind of a cool history. They used to mine a lot of minerals in the area. Many tourists stopped in Amboy when route 66 what is the main road through the Mojave desert. On the freeway was put in The town was pretty much cut off. A new owner but the whole town and is now trying to make it a tourist destination. It was super fun to visit and you should really try out their homemade root beer
Amboy the place that time left behind.. if you decided to take the back way to Vegas and didnt filled up before you left be ready to pay a pretty penny for that fuel.. and remember that was your fault! Get off stretch the legs look around use the facilities pick up a snack or a little memento of your travel on the old route 66 and head on out to your destination 😉 and remember the road only gets more lonely from there 😁🤣🤣
Roys Cafe is a MUST SEE on your trup on the Route 66!!!If you pass, make a stop for some beautiful pictures of this iconic place!Support the little shop by buying something, a drink, a souvenir, ...We also could appreciate the iconic old but clean restrooms. So glad we made a stop!!!
Very authentic place. Some would call it a dive...but thats part of the charm with a place like this. I actually really enjoyed the stop!I pulled up to get gas, and just like the old days...the man came out to pump my gas for me! 😁I was shocked and then realized what a special jem this place really is even though at first glance it seems kinda dumpy. Theres a painted Route66 badge in the middle of the road where I took several pictures!
Roy’s Motel & Cafe is a must stop for all travelers along Route 66 and explorers alike! Great service, snacks, gas, and a ton of tasty sodas to choose from. Miss Nicole, the manager, provided wonderful service and told my group stories and explained the history of Amboy (the deserted town surrounding Roy’s). If you’re interested in Route 66, or just need a place to stop for some gas and snacks, make sure to stop by Roy’s!
We love this place and are fascinated by Amboy! The first time we stopped we were a bit disappointed to discover that the cafe is not an actual restaurant, but the service in the shop is friendly and we made the most of it. Honestly, with a background in hospitality, I dream about the motel reopening so I can work there someday!
This is a fun little stop along route 66. I highly recommend you ask the staff about the children’s graveyard. It’s very sad but it’s part of our history, a really bad disease swept through this town back in 1935 and unfortunately killed all the children in the community. They have a graveyard about a half a mile away from the hotel where all the children were very.
A cool little tourist stop with really clean bathrooms. They have a shop and serve food also. They have drinks t shirts and other Nick nacks. Plenty of parking haha. They have the rocket parked there right now and it wont be going off any time soon. It is like stepping into a time capsule when you are there. This is route 66 but the freeway bypassed this so now it is kind of deserted. Juan pollo is the owner i think. Also the bridge is washed out just past here so you will be getting back on the 40. Its been washed out for a while, I imagine its a low priority for cal trans. Its has had pumps, but it is expensive! $5.00 in Dec. 2017
Took hwy 62 to Amboy rd North to National Trails hwy & witnessed all the desert nostalgia along the way. So many abandoned homes, groups of clustered mailboxes [still in use] & beautiful Mojave landscapes & Amboy of course. Took this route heading up to Laughlin NV. Took many pics, what a great experience.
Roy’s in Amboy is one the most iconic locations in the California Desert. The history of the motel, cafe, school, church, and airfield date back to the glory days of Route 66 before the freeways bypassed the National Trails Highway. This location has been used for countless photo shoots, video advertising and flim features. It is a tradition to stop and celebrate visiting with a Route 66 Root Beer purchased in the gift shop. Make sure you visit to explore the grounds and experience this legendary location of the Mojave Desert.
Johnathon and Brianna are good people. They run the place and are attentive and friendly. The restaurant only has snacks and souvenirs. There are plans to open the kitchen as well as the motel, but its not known when.Give them a visit just for the interesting sights and friendship. It was nice talking to the other visitors, too.
Theres nothing for you here. No real bathrooms, only porta-potties. NO CAFE. Basically a tourist trap for people who like to post on their social media. Gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because it exhists in the middle of nowhere. Would have gotten more stars if they sold eggs.
HELLO EVERYONE. IM PLEASED TO SHARE A SPECIAL VISIT. ROYS MOTEL & CAFE. LOCATED IN AMBOY CALIFORNIA. And we met the Owner of Amboy. Mr. Albert Okura. And the Special Lady at the counter of the store/gas station. Nicole . Our trip from 29 Palms Ca. took us east on Amboy rd. To Amboy. Which is on the Original hwy 66. What a truly beautiful drive thru the mountains. And to the town on Amboy. An Historic Town of of Yester year. Do google the vast history of this town. And thank you to Mr. Okura for preserving Amboy. And Also Meeting Him. Thank you Nicole.. Its not the size of the town but rather the experience of Being There . a time capsual. And yet only 1 1/2 hour to Las Vegas NV. to mass civilization. Then proceed Thru the National Preserve for Millions of Joshua Trees. . what a sight. And you exit at Nipton Rd. Onto hwy 15 before NV. CA state Line. Thank you Nicole for turing a great drive into a Beautiful Experience. Love you..
This place is in the middle of no where, as well as the first bathroom for a long distance, so they have porta-potties for travelers and I always make sure I get something from them because they provide a great service in the middle of nowhere. they have snacks and tourist item
Very cool mid-century modern building. Its too bad that it no longer functions as intended. They dont have a fresh water supply so no motel or restaurant, other than a $3 cup of pod coffee and no gas the day I was there. Still, a very interesting stop on what remains of old Route 66.
Details on this place:Its no longer a motel or cafe.It is a gas station with a small convenience-style store. They have snacks, bottled drinks and souvenirs.Cash is preferred here. Credit card transactions require a minimum $10 purchase.Retro restrooms are out back.Cool place to stop and explore. Some of the older motels rooms are explorable but be careful. If you stop in the middle of the night and desperately need $5/gallon gas after they close, there is a phone number on the door reading Night Gas.Remember, its in the middle of the desert...its fun, its nifty but its not your typical gas station.
We love taking day trips and running out to Amboy and visiting Roy’s has been on the list. Such a great place of history on Route 66. The store had somegreat memorabilia and super yummy Route 66 root beer. When standing by the sign you could almost feel the history. For sure a must see on your Route 66 adventures or if you just wanna see some great history.
Never been on Route 66. Stopped here because I saw the word cafe and was hungry. Disappointed that the cafe cannot serve food, but the guy behind the counter was really nice and helpful. You get a free lanyard for posting reviews! Also, get yourself a couple of souvenir Route 66 Root Beers!
Ah Roys... once an icon on Route 66... has now fallen to the fate of time, and no doubt economy... much like that old venerable highway itself. It used to be the quintessential roadside greasy spoon diner, with fixed stool seating at the chrome edged formica counter, with a scattering of tables. But alas, no more burgers or fries or eggs... etc.The kitchen is CLOSED at Roys.Roys still offers chips, sodas, candy and snacks as well as a wide selection of hats and other Route 66 memorabilia. The counter is stll there, as is much of the decor, so certainly worth a visit, just as a reminder of days of the simple open road that inspired treks and songs.Route 66 itself is also closed... just a few miles east of Roys... no doubt this is contributing to the loss of this memorable cafe. Roys can be reached on old Route 66 from the west at the Ludlow exit (go east], or from Kelbaker road, off of I 40, from the east (go south, then west). Look for the Amboy signs... before it all just fades away.Well all miss the shakes... SIGH.
Nice lady behind the counter. But we really stopped for the ice cream we saw advertised along the way. We were thinking maybe a milkshake or a sundae, etc? But the nice lady aimed us toward a freezer, the type in any convenience store. But before purchasing, we made sure they had bathrooms. We saw mens/womens rooms in the building next door, but they were locked. Instead, they had half a dozen porta-potties lined up nearby. I understand this is easier than cleaning the indoor bathroom, but the ones we used were far past servicing, in an overflow mode, and pretty difficult to even peer in to. But they do get at least two stars because we did need to stop for some kind of restroom, even if the ice cream idea was not realistic.
We took the scenic route to Vegas through the desert and hills and it was beautiful. We came across this little tourist spot and decided to stop and its a pretty cool little spot. Theres a tourist shop that you can stop in and ask questions and all of the little hotel rooms are open and you can go inside.
Stopped here for gas on my way from Vegas to Joshua Tree. It was like stepping back in time, especially with the old gas pumps. Everyone was friendly and polite. My only complaint was the gas prices. It was $5+ That was insanely high. I got enough to get me to 29 Palms and then filled up there instead.
So cool to see this place come back alive again. Even if no need to fill up on gas, this is a perfect lil place to stop and stretch your legs. Ive always had a pleasant and friendly encounter with the employees. I Love how well they have fixed up and restored the office/motel lobby next to the gas station, giving it a real feel of its original era. Although, the motel isnt actually open and appears to be in process of renovating and restoration, at least I hope. If so, I think it would be a interesting place to stay at.
I arrived here by bicycle moments before a crazy sandstorm hit the area. I can’t tell you just how accommodating, generous and kind this place (specifically miss Nicole) was to me, a weary traveler trying to shelter from the storm. This lady is a gem and this place is an oasis…not to mention a cool and historic site on Route 66…would highly recommend :)
The Motel and Cafe itself are closed and owned by the owner of the place Amboy. That’s why there is a post office that is open, because then the place had a zip code. The motel is from the 60/70ties and people are telling (the post office man told me) that Elvis Presley has stayed in one of the cabins of the old motel when he had enough of the city. The place lies at route 66, but it is really expensive to get gas at the tank station (around 5 dollar). This and another place, are the only two places in America that are owned by someone.
The rooms r clean. The people r nice. I like the taco place open 24 hours. Love all the plants , the water stream n the lobby.Only suggestion to help make better. Maybe self check in machine. The lines r long and some people had to go and sit down. Thank goodness the people in line understood. Or have chairs or benches. Almost everyone in line w us was 70 to 92. To stand in line for 45 minutes is hard on them.
I recently had car trouble outside of Amboy on way to Vegas. I was rescued by David and Nicole who manage and work at Roys. They helped me get my car towed. Nicole gave me a ride home to Sky Valley. She lives in 29 Palms! Roys is a unique stop on old Rte 66 filled with all kinds of treasures, memorabilia, food and drinks. If you are every on Natl Trails Hwy or Rte 66, please treat yourself and stop at Roys. Thank you Thank you Thank you
Roy was super great and a sight for sore eyes after driving through the Mojave Desert! He pumped our gas, although gas is expensive in the middle of the desert, LOL! He loved my children and was very kind. Best place in town. Oh thats right, its the only place in town!
Really special place along Rte. 66 in Amboy, CA. Was in a couple movies back in the day. The old hotel rooms are open so you can look in them. There is a gas station and little store there, too, as well as a bathroom. Also, the water is salt water, so no drinking it.
I wouldve given 5 stars, but apparently the person working the shop has to pump the gas for customers, and the person working happened to be a lady. Now, I all for equal rights, but that hurt me as a gentleman having to watch this lady pump my gas for me. Her boss should know better, whoever he is.
Took the longer scenic route from San Diego to Las Vegas and made sure we came past this little slice of Americana.Theres not much to see or do, but its still definitely worth a stop.Dont expect to spend more than 15-20 minutes there as you get the obligatory photos of the sign and the Route 66 markings on the road.Dont arrive too late in the day, as the shadows will make it a little bit more tricky to get the perfect snapshot.
Some places and people just put a big smile on your face. This delightful vintage gem beckons those who appreciate historic Route 66. Its just visual eye candy. My disappointment is that I had read each room had been decorated. That is no longer the case sadly. Somebody always has to go mess up things. The young man behind the counter was charming and delightful. Really put a smile on my face. And the most amazing beard.
Has potential. Its not a diner anymore. Its like a small souvenir shop that was once a Diner and gas station. You can get gas, drinks and souvenirs. It was clean. The gentleman was very nice. They pump the gas, they have to unlock the pump. Another guy was being trained. Loved the plaque on the front giving some history. This sounds weird but the bathrooms were kind of cool. They are in a separate building. Needs some touch ups of paint and tile but you can still see its place in the past.

2022-06-13Amazing location not that far from the highway. If you want a cool route 66 location to stop in on with friends and family, or just an interesting landmark on your way into California, this is well worth the stop!Great place to stop for some photos, a walk around or a snack.Staff was very helpful, and even in the height of expensive gas it wasnt too terrible for how remote of a location it is.Wide range of snacks available too, plenty of drinks, etc.

2022-03-13Please support historical gems like Roy’s Motel and Cafe. Pilots be aware of restricted area very close to the runway. If coming from LA or SD area suggest hooking left after 29 palms VOR and start a gradual descent to around 2,000 ft. Use 29 palms weather and altimeter. Make left traffic for east runway. Right traffic for West runway. 2, 000 ft was a bit high for us, we landed east and the rising terrain on the right made it seem like we were surfing 🏄♀️ a wave with the 🏔. Brush up on soft runway. Dirt runway with rocks, you’ll slow down faster than expected, don’t let the nose sink. No avgas. This is what flying is all about

2022-03-03Amazing former stop along RT 66 and the National Historic Trail. Souvenir/coffee shop was open. If you stop to take photos- and you will- go buy something.

2022-02-28Awesome place definitely a historical landmark for route 66. Yes they have free portapoties but it cost them money to maintain and stock with toilet paper so be sure to stop in to there gift shop and help keep this amazing place going.

2022-06-26World class hospitality! Had just closed the gas station when we arrived and turned the pump back on just for us. Very friendly and awesome to see on Route 66.

2022-04-29What a cool little stop right at the edge of the Mojave Desert, you feel youve stepped back in time. I had the pleasure to talk to an employee she stated that it once was a very busy place but do to putting in some interstate or highway they bypassed that whole area, sad! Because it truly is a gem. And they have the old fashion gas pumps. Dont panic if your driving from Vegas to Palm Springs after making our way thru the Mojave late at night we panicked not knowing if wed have enough gas to get to our next destination we had never been through the desert, it takes a couple hours to trek thru Mojave, but the gas station Roys is about 25 miles from more towns.

2021-09-30We stayed here overnight for n our RV as a Harvest Host location it was a bit loud because of the train but as a offside stop it was fantastic! The staff here are so hospitable and kind. It has such a fun motif and my kids all loved the classic neon sign and famous “Route 66 beer” .

2022-05-17Not much to see here, its a gas stop in the middle of nowhere with an iconic road sign. The employee did not seem overly enthusiastic but did his job, so theres that. The little girl that made me coffee was the highlight of the visit. I wish her all the best.
