Really fun, interesting place to stay in Tahoe. Parking is a bit of a pain (across the street and down a bit), but not bad. Theres a hallway that has signatures and comments from hundreds of past guests. We got a bunk bed room which was perfect for two friends. Each bunk had its own outlet for a phone charger. Staff was friendly and helpful. Id definitely stay here again!
Stayed in the building next door (pup friendly!) and am happy to report had a very peaceful quiet night. It has a shared kitchen & bathrooms but everyone kept to themselves. Great wifi and the girls at the desk were very helpful. Get you the unicorn vomiting sticker when you visit.
The best hostel Ive ever stayed in by far. Great bunks. Great rules. Great owners/employees. The owners have created a wonderful experience that is artistic and feels like a beautiful happy community. This place is just filled with love and happiness. I highly recommend sitting at the bar and having a few drinks in the evening and talking with your fellow travelers and the staff. Cant wait to get back here.
Had a great time with friends at this hostel. Staff definitely stood out being super helpful and friendly. Had a nice little bar with ice cream and a few snacks. Rooms were awesome and some of the best bunks Ive ever stayed in, really spacious and comfy. Had a fantastic weekend and will be recommending to all my friends.
This is an amazing bunk hostel. For people who havent tried a bunk hostel, its about sleeping on bunk beds with 8-10 other bunks in the room. The space is small but its efficient. At Redlight, you get big lockers above your bed. And some storage space outside the bunks. The communal areas are just awesome. Lot of stuff around to explore. You meet and talk with other people. The bar is a fancy redlight themed place. Check the photos. The staff is incredibly friendly something that you will rare find in actual hotels. One more great thing is that they have instructions all over the place so people can live without bothering one another. No room for ambiguity. I had a zero-problem stay. Met really cool people. This is one of the best spots in North Tahoe for cheap and fun lodging. Parking is tricky here so carefully read about it before you book. Its $1.5 hr from 10 am to 6 pm, free rest. Do check.
Spent 3 nights here over Labor Day weekend in a private room with shared bath down the hall. All the campgrounds were full so checked this place out for an affordable place to stay. Love the restored historic feel of the building. This is not your typical hostel! Very clean, bed was super comfortable, linens and towels included, kitchen really well-equipped. It was an excellent home away from home. The downstairs bar area was a great place to hang out and meet new folks. Staff and customers alike were all super friendly! About 20 minutes drive from Donner summit and walking distance to the downtown bars, so this was a great home-base for adventure. Well be back
Im a frequent visitor and this hostel is consistently clean, welcoming, and accommodating. Try their mule at the bar, its a good way to settle in after traveling. I especially love the sauna after a day of hiking or snowboarding. Thank you, Redlight, for being my little home away from home. Im looking forward to my next visit!
I booked a private room in the annex, and am very pleased with the results! The amenities listed were exactly as advertised. The long term tenants that shared the house were selected well, as they were friendly, polite, and didnt make a sound at night. Housekeeping kept the place clean. As I am a private person, the annex with the private rooms was the right choice. Location was spot on, super convenient to all the good spots Truckee has to offer. Id book this again in a minute!
Too many restrictions for a very small space that doesnt even have a lot of amenities. They gave us free sandals, but it was handmade with very thin material I dont even know what it was. Might as well have been cardboard. Its a cute looking place, very rustic, but I wouldnt rent a room there. Id hang out and take pictures then leave immediately.
This place is amazing. We stayed in a private room with a bath, but they have a huge range of price options from just a bunk with a shared bathroom on up. The Speakeasy/reception area has a wonderful vibe and you can hang out and meet the other guests. There are also other chairs tucked away in the corners if you want to read or chill. The ones we met were really nice. Super fun spot. Super economical too. This place is a great deal if youre trying to travel without spending a lot of money.
This is not the $300 Best Western in town, more like a euro-hostel. One of the most comfortable beds Ive ever been on/in and thick towels. No frills here except a nice small bar/ice cream parlor/front desk in main building. The Annex is another building 50 away. Very quiet...at least when I was there. There is a kitchen and laundry if youre staying awhile.Bring your own food if you dont want to go out to eat, but why would you do that with all the excellent restaurants so close?Much less expensive than the other motels nearby.Glad I stayed here.
I intend to come back here on every single solo snowboard trip I ever take to Tahoe. Its the perfect spot for 1 or 2 people that need a cheap, simple place to sleep. It also has a full kitchen and an awesome lounge to relax in. All of the workers are very friendly as well! That being said I would definitely recommend this to the younger, more hipster crowd. This is not a conventional hotel. Im personally glad that it isnt!
I stayed here last month and had a great time!! The hostel is brand new and the rooms are nice and clean. The decor is great and the owners are friendly and very helpful! There is a bar onsite and there is a sauna upstairs. The hostel is within walking distance to downtown Truckee and to the shuttles to take you to the ski resorts. I stayed in a queen room with attached bathroom. Everything was great! Its a great experience and value! I will definitely be back!!
The price is wayyyy to high, even for being the cheapest option in downtown Truckee, which it seems like the staff and owner want to constantly remind you of (look in past comments to see the owner telling everyone who gives constructive feedback they are wrong or some weird explanation involving how he insulated the rooms and how you should stay at the Ritz) While we saw them cleaning the bathrooms while we were checking out, it seemed like they had skipped a day or two. Parking should be validated, especially for how high the price is. Decor and general vibe are.... just plain weird. Like your grandma and grandpa ate acid and you let them put random stuff everywhere. Staff at the bar were nice and friendly. That was pretty much the only upside for this place.
First time I stayed here, I was more than satisfied and pleasantly surprised!I have now stayed here on multiple trips.-Nice clean comfortable sheets (and mattress)-Includes clean towel-Nice private bathrooms-Friendly staff that are fun to hang with in the evenings-Theres a kitchen area-Theres a sauna-Theres cool attic upstairsI am very impressed with the bunk capsules. The curtain is very handy. Plus it includes outlets, a light inside, and a place to lock your stuff although I never felt the need to.10/10 for the very low rate hostel!!!You will be happy here :)
Good staff super friendly but... the place we stayed for a private room was way too small. There was barely room to put my bags down as soon as you entered the room. I didnt like that fact for how much we outrageously paid that we had to share a bathroom along with hunting a parking spot. The bar was super cool along with the people. But never will I pay that much money again on what redlight gives you.
Its a hostel, so dont expect the hotel experience. Youll be in the same room as 7 other guests (unless you pay extra for a private room), and sharing a bathroom. That said, this is one of the nicest hostels Ive stayed at. You get your own semi-private sleeping cubicle with curtain, lights, and locker. Theyve also got a bar and dry sauna, which is super nice. Supposedly there a house dog (Moki), but sadly I didnt see any dogs around. Bottom line, as long as youre willing to forgo privacy (like any hostel) this is a great stay with a nice social atmosphere.
Super cute. Funky vibe, friendly laid back staff/guests. Reminded me of my hostel adventures in europe! We stayed in the imperial suite studio and its perfect. Comfy beds, super clean and has everything a person needs. It will be the only place i stay in truckee from now on!
This is the best hostel Ive stayed in. The vibes are super chill with lots of cool people around to meet; theres a bar area right in the lobby and a movie room with a Wii U in the basement. Well maintained too, with a clean, spacious kitchen and even a sauna on the top level. Plus, youre not gonna beat the price in Truckee. Highly recommend.
Reasonable cost for such a pleasant and well decorated/organized place. People are charming and effective. This is my second stay as a hiker transiting through this town and I will definitely be back whenever I get back around. Well situated in the beautiful town of Truckee. The nearby train is just adding to this picturesque place. Just love it!
Great hostel atmosphere. Staff is amazing. Convenient location. A limited bar inside the hostel. A fun vibe that Id recommend to anyone.Extra kudos for the white noise machine. Its not a particularly loud place, but its alot of people in a small space. The sauna on the roof was outstanding. Was on the higher price end as far as hostels go, but thats not suggesting its expensive or that there are better options at a similar pricepoint.
Amazing little Hostel/speakeasy-ish I have been too in awhile. Clean rooms, clean bathrooms, great cocktail infusions (their Mule was my favorite). Friendly staff and very helpful. Felt very safe and they have a security bear near the front door. Would recommend this to people. Being a hostel Hostel ypu do have different sleeping arrangements for your needs.
This place is awesome. Great location -- easy walk to restaurants/bars and 15 minute drive to Squaw Valley. Good vibe. Retro decorations. Bar. Large communal kitchen. Clean. Several options for rooms -- shared dorm rooms as low as $40. Buy groceries (and gas) before you get here as there is no supermarket close (nor cheap gas).
In discovering this area you should explore and experience all of it. This is a walk from all the shops and river also very chill relaxed, river air maybe. Will post pics later. For female travelers a nice safe vibe. For olderones, it didnt get too crazy when I was there. Just a fun small speakeasy all in one dance/music/art/with tarot readings, a gnome at the bar and a hat collection. Clean kitchen, location, staff, clean privacy curtain bunks up to private larger suites. Summer pick a nice river day and cruise over when activities are happening or not. Check website for better pricing.
One the coolest and most friendly establishments I have EVER been to!! Very well done facilities, and kept up immaculately. THIS NOT HOTEL, this is a hostel, you will be sorely disappointed if you come here expecting a hotel. But if you come with an open mind and a friendly demeanor you leave with more friends then you came with.
The Redlight is the absolute BEST! I love this place. Its one of the most fantastic hostels I have ever experienced, and I have stayed at many in the US and around the world.I have been staying at the Redlight since the first season they opened and have had a wonderful time. There are so many things I love about this place. First, owners Abby and Zach are two of the coolest people I have met in Tahoe. They are so kind, extremely hard working, super fun, interesting, accommodating, and they truly care about their patrons.Secondly, I love the atmosphere and vibe at the Redlight. Abby and Zach remodeled the Redlight themselves and chose a warm and eclectic décor. And inspired by her performance background, Abby adds fabulous flare to the hostel with her unique outfits and incredible style. The Redlight even has its own funky hat collection, and guests are welcome to wear the hats at the bar or around the hostel. Its hilarious to see everyone sitting at the bar wearing different hats! Also, there is a wonderful communal dynamic. They foster a tolerant and welcoming environment, and I have witnessed their efforts as well as philanthropy (e.g. no tips are accepted at the bar but donations to local charities are welcome).Thirdly, I love the features of the Redlight. All the details have been thoughtful and well-planned. The Redlight has private rooms as well as dorm rooms. The dorm rooms have amazing bunks (built by Zach) which are nicely large, and each contains a lockable cubby, a light, power outlets, and a privacy curtain. It has everything you need. The hostel has great security with CCTV and key pad locks on the front door and doors of all the rooms. There is a great TV lounge downstairs, and the front bar is cozy, fun and offers great drinks and food. The kitchen is also great, functional and has all the appliances you need. Ive always had fun meeting other guests and cooking together in the kitchen. There are plenty of bathrooms and showers for guests also. The Redlight even supplies ear plugs if you need them in the dorm rooms.Fourth, the Redlight is sparkling clean, and the staff is awesome. The Redlight is the cleanest hostel Ive experienced. The hostel has a lovely cleaning staff who come every day and do thorough work. The staff is really friendly, and there is always someone available if you need them. They are quick to respond. If you do have a problem at the hostel, the staff is always willing to help. As a note, keep in mind that this is a hostel and communal environment so be respectful to others, peaceful and follow the rules so we can all have a great experience.Lastly, the Redlight is fun, convenient, and affordable. Their website is easy for making reservations, and check-in is simple. There is parking across the street, and the hostel is located in charming Old Town Truckee with easy access to restaurants, coffee houses, bars, gas stations, and grocery stores. Its only approx. 12 miles to Squaw and Alpine ski resorts. And the Redlight is fun! Abby and Zach host a variety of fun events throughout the year, and they make staying at the hostel fun. There are lovely people from all over that come to stay. You can visti any time of the year to enjoy all that the Tahoe area has to offer!
Redlight is hands down the best spot to stay, especially if you want an ultra friendly staff and awesome vibe! They will accommodate you and help your Tahoe experience be the best it can be. Theres could be a negative Ned who whines because his skis werent waxed and his Prius didnt make it in the 4ft of pow that day to Squaw/Alpine, but we know those people suck and exist so who cares? Every decent person Ive met who has stayed here, loves it!!! Awesome vibe. Awesome staff. Redlight is for adventurous, fun people who dont cry and complain because its snowing too much. If you want a unique and fun stay in Truckee, stay here. Its the best.
I really appreciate that this business is here! I work in Truckee but live in Reno and so far twice this winter I have been stranded in Truckee because the storms shut down the freeway. This place offers an affordable escape in an excellent location.I loved being able to check in while enjoying a drink at the bar. The bunk beds are really cozy and are fairly private. The bathrooms are clean and I had no issue with the shower. If this place wasnt here Id half to pay twice as much to stay at a normal hotel and I wouldnt have enjoyed it half as much.
Awesome hostel with incredibly nice staff and clean facilities. I had travel issues (getting stuck on I80 during a snowstorm) and they sent me info so I could check in late.Beds are comfy and there’s storage locations for ski gear. No dedicated parking if you’re driving but you can easily find overnight parking in Truckee.
Great place for an overnight. Ski storage in the rooms, plenty of hooks to dry things out, cozy bunks, free towels. Also a bar and a sauna and a very nice kitchen and a tv room downstairs. One stay docked from this old man because its a bit rowdy for those of us who would rather early to bed and early to rise.
My wife loves this place, my kids love this place. This place is good for country and Gothic people because thats my wife shes like these two things. You know when they say dont underestimate the beds are amazing the walls are amazing the floor is amazing the bathroom is like your own home and for the women my wife wants to say that the bathtub is really deep
So, this is a very special kind of place. If you are looking for a fancy, proper, chocolate under your pillow type of resort, please look elsewhere. But if you seek adventure, if you appreciate an old building that has stories to tell and is oozing with eccentricity, if you are intrigued by an opportunity to meet and hang out with an odd cast of characters and vagabonds into the wee hours of the night, or by a possibility of something special happening on a random stroke of luck, youve found the right place!
We stayed two nights in the apartment studio and had a wonderful weekend escape. The renovations in this historic Truckee CA building are an act of love by the wonderful hosts/owners. An eclectic mix of old, new, and the quirky art made for an experience that allowed us to forget the day to day grind. Thanks to our wonderful host, Abby and Zack!!!!
My friends and I stayed at the Red Light for a couple of days while skiing at Northstar. The staff were really friendly, and the sleeping accommodations pretty standard for a hostel. Its across the street from the main part of Truckee, so you can walk to get most things that you need, which is a nice bonus.
This hostel is the #1 best thing about Truckee. It solves all the problems that keep Tahoe from being great: theres the TART bus which stops just in front of the hostel and runs at reasonable times so you can completely avoid the unpleasant drive to any resort. It is lodging for people who arent rich families that everyone wants to fleece. It has soul and isnt a strip motel... and visiting here you get such a nice vibe at the cafe, and you can read lots of great books! You can even walk from here to downtown Truckee, which is unheard of in most of Tahoe. I think I had another experience that was just as nice which was an airbnb with a nice family, but this is more of the ideal situation. I hope there are more places like this in north Lake Tahoe, it just sucks having to drive everywhere (its dangerous too), and we need more places for middle class people to enjoy nature too.
There is no parking spot designated for your room. On the street, you have to pay during the day and during the night parking is not allowed. The only overnight parking allowed is in the corner parking lot, where you stil pay during the day but you are actually allowed to park during the night. Though, there are not too many parking spots there! My room was only 10 by 10 with a shared bathroom. There is no sound insulation in rooms so we can hear the bar which is open in the lobby and everything in the hotel and everybody around you. The kitchen is shared too. Though, the price you pay is pretty much the price of a hotel. My room was pretty cold to me and I had no option to control the heater.
This is the worst hostel Ive stayed at in North America - but maybe its because its not really a hostel. Its a pseudo artsy place owned by condescending hipsters who look down on backpackers. When we arrived, a customer at the bar was saying offending comments about LGBTQ people but the staff didnt really seem to care. The staff member who welcomed us spoke to us in a very haughtily manner and, when we asked him if he could give us advices about places to visit in the area, he gave us an annoyed look that convinced us to go to the visitor center instead. We also quiclky found out that the staff was LITERALLY NEVER THERE: they come at 4 oclock in the afternoon, so you have to check yourself out and, once again, if you need some advices or informations, theres no one here for you. Obviously, no activities or fun nights are organized. In a nutshell, if youre looking for the kind of friendly and helping environment a hostel usually is, dont go there!
We walk in and there are all kinds of crazy hats to wear it’s quite funny, the locks on the doors are by code so you basically can come and go as you please. The hotel is smack dab in the center of truckee making it awesome to get food and to go to the shops all around, besides the fact that you have to share a room, it’s awesome, I love the people , I love the atmosphere , you even get your own little locker in your bed it’s pretty cool that way you can store your valuables, showers are shared but not the big of a deal , the sauna is awesome, I love the people that work here they are very friendly and helpful and funny , great stay I would personally come back or maybe possible live here lol
Having visited 50+ hostels between us in almost as many countries (and now owning one ourselves in Bend, Oregon), our recent experience with Zach and Abby at Redlight exceeded every expectation. Their literal red light beckons just across the tracks from downtown Truckee, leading to a hand-crafted re-establishment of the historic Truckee Saloon and Lodging House. Youll be challenged to find something they havent thought of, including a top floor, back deck sauna. Wow! Redlight has put Truckee on the map for us, and we look forward to many more visits in the future.
Extremely weird at first staff not so sociable owners a delight to talk to him be around they accommodate it is with everything we ask for dog amenities awesome very polite people sounds a bit expensive if you have four days to do nothing so I went and went to work to help the owner had a good time all in all recommend it to everybody PS standard puppy pound at the puppy princess palace its the best place in the house its cute its delightful and your secluded
If you are looking for run of the mill, dont stop here! Eclectic I think would be a good description. Fun and good value also come to mind. Centrally located is an understatement. Abby and Zach are wonderful hosts that make you just want to join in the whole Truckee vibe.

2022-06-24Remember , this is a hostel. Basically a bed at the end of the day. The woman who was on duty was friendly and attentive. The room was clean and well kept as was the bathroom. I stayed In a dorm and had plenty of room to store my gear. I did not notice any road noise and very little from the near by rail line. Granted I didnt sleep very well, but its a dorm, and I did not use the white noise, ear plugs may help, 5 other people in the room. Keep in mind that the tahoe basin is a world destination and the price is definitely a value. Good beer. Pizza is OK but hey, for 20 bucks it works. Always interesting folks at the bar.

2021-12-20I have stayed in hostels across the United States. I led bicycle trips for the American Youth Hostels in CA, MA, PA and even France! I love hostels, and this hostel is pretty awesome, and in a very special place, downtown Truckee. There are a few issues though. Its not that warm in the winter, and the air coming into the bunk room is actually chilly. And the front staff does not have control of the thermostat! There is a great movie room downstairs with lots of movies, which would be an especially great thing for the winter when the nights are longer, but it is closed off to guests now. There are locking areas above the sleeping areas in the bunk room which is great, but both of my visits there has been an issue getting them to work.

2021-10-02I’m quite confident that anyone who complains about this place doesn’t understand what a hostel is, or has never stayed in one. The place clearly advertises it’s a hostel or”bunk style hotel” for those who that doesn’t register. This is the nicest hostel I’ve ever stayed in and I’ve stayed in my fair share of European and Asian hostels. It’s a little on the pricey end but for American prices this is amazing. I’ve paid more for a motel 6 that didn’t provide me a foam mattress and a sound machine. Yes some amenities are shared but that’s because it’s a HOSTEL. I would absolutely recommend. Staff is lovely. Location is divine. Details are too notch. Bed is comfortable. Privacy for a hostel is well above average. I’m so happy to know these place exist in the us for budget travelers who cant afford the $250 Hampton inn aka the next sharpest option.

2021-10-15Good place to rent a room or bunk for cheap. Shared bathrooms and kitchen were clean, decor entertaining, quiet hours observed. This is an old building and the walls are thin and rooms small. Having a kitchen to prepare your own meals helps as most the restaurants in town add up quick. Also theres a sauna upstairs.

2021-08-14I really hesitate to recommend this Hostel to you. Why? Because it is so cool and if it becomes too popular, then I will have difficulty getting a reservation!Whats not to like about Red light? Literally nothing if you are looking for an inexpensive place to stay in Truckee.I have stated in three hostels in the last 5 years. This one is by far the best one.Note: I was a solo client, but they do have private rooms for couples. If you like meeting and getting to know others, then this is a good option for you. A large kitchen, two larger refrigerators and a video, game room downstairs. Be prepared to share you experiences at the beer and ice cream bar while wearing a silly hat. Its the culture here.Do me a favor RedLight, make sure you always have a bunk for me!

2022-01-05Nice and cozy hostel in downtown truckee. They have a few restaurants nearby and there is paid parking across the street until 6pm and then it is free afterwards. I stayed there overnight to go snowboarding at northstar. No issues on my end I would stay there again

2021-07-29I recently moved to the North Lake Tahoe/Truckee area for work. I booked a month at the Redlight because it was close to my new office. Zach and the staff were incredible! They welcomed me warmly and were very attentive to my needs. The ice cream/beer bar was a great place to meet new people. Staying here definitely gave me a good lay of the land and was a great introduction to the local culture.

2021-12-31Absolutely horrible, didnt even have the chance to stay, all roads into town were closed all friends in nearby area were snowed in, we try to refund or reschedule our stay and they try charging me 1300 purely for the cancellation because they say I cannot refund or reschedule. Absolutely no help and honestly shocked by the experience. If this was known I would’ve never chosen to stay with them

2020-10-25Private room was so comfy, Super clean, staff And atmosphere was friendly and we were next to EVERYTHING- trails, food, gas station, bars, and all of that. Way better than a hotel room in my opinion but it is different let me explain.Shared bathroom-but is was very clean. No tv. You can’t eat or consume alcohol in the rooms (cute bar downstairs tho). No personal blankets or pillows (plenty are provided and they smelled clean like laundry). Must respect quiet hours.
