Blown thermostat on my car; nursed it to Portola Valley Garage and pleaded with Tom to fix it. Not ready to send it to the big graveyard yet!Tom was great, took care of the problems, and turned it around quickly. And stuck to his estimate too!!Great service, and nice guys.A+++++
We had a very positive experience at PVG. Unfortunately the engine replacement cost would have exceeded the value of the car, but Tom and team saved us money every way possible. They even gave free advice on how to repair my other vehicle on my own without the need to bring it in. Service was quick, communication was excellent, and they showed genuine care for our situation. We will be taking our cars to PVG for service moving forward.
Tom and his team ripped out my old suspension, added new shocks & struts, called me whenever a question or uncertainty came up, and had the whole thing done in a day. Incredible. Highly communicative & trustworthy.I had been taking my 4runner to a toyota specialist for the past 5 years but thats done now, its PV garage from now on.
Consistently excellent service. I thought a battery problem with our aging Nissan Leaf would be outside their realm of expertise. I was delighted to have the problem diagnosed and the issue fixed in the same amount of time that weve come to expect with more mainstream vehicles
For twenty plus years we have entrusted several cars, all makes and models, to Tom and his crew. There is quite simply no better place - for service, for professional knowledge of automobiles or for the quality of the people who work for Tom Ramies. It has been our pleasure to know and work with the team at Portola Valley Garage. They always go one step beyond the best! I am simply repeating what our experience has always been with PV Garage - Excellent in every way!
I debated posting this because they have such great reviews but feel I should. Note I think these guys really know their stuff, and Im sure they do great work, but I would be very wary of their price/sales tactics - especially if youre not a confrontational person. I have a car that had some really hard to diagnose problems that my usual mechanic told me might be worth getting a second opinion on from a specialty spot (car is European). A friend recommended this place so I called in advance explaining exactly what was already done to the car by my current mechanic and the man responded with confidence that he could figure it out/diagnose it. I asked how much an inspection/diagnosis was and he said it would be $250. Tl;dr if you dont want to read below, they tried to charge $450 after the diagnostic with no details then immediately bumped it back to $250 with no fight when I mentioned the initial estimate he gave (Im of course happy to pay $450 if they did additional or extra work beyond the first promise but they admit they didnt).$250 is a bit steep for a specific inspection, but judging by the cars outside, this place doesnt mess around so I felt okay paying a premium based on their confidence and specialty (I did this knowing theres a chance it wouldnt work). I dropped the car off and gave the info of what my mechanic tested and the results (e.g. compression/valve leak tests etc.), they seemed confident but the man at the desk kind of threw my mechanic under the bus saying never trust someone elses tests/diagnostic - okay fine maybe hes right. Next day I get a call saying they cannot figure out the issue and to dig further it would cost about $1,000 worth of labor and might not be worthwhile. Bummer, but thats exactly what happened to my first mechanic so totally fair. I said dont bother Ill pick it up and then he quoted me $450. I asked why $450 - and he said what were you told it would cost? and I said, $250. He then dropped the price to $250 with no questions asked.Im sorry - what?! I then respectfully asked why he initially quoted it so high, what was done, etc. and he changed the subject avoiding the question. I would have been less upset if he defended the $450 price with some reasoning but to drop it so fast and not address it felt *extremely* shady. The guy (Tim or Tom) told me I should let the car go and I really appreciated his honesty/candor there but thats what I expect of a good premium mechanic. If I never brought up the price he could have had me for an extra $200. If it were a friend or my significant other that got taken in such a way Id be furious.Probably a good shop, albeit expensive, but if youre a new customer be really careful about the pricing and work up front. I rarely leave a bad review, and I tried to resolve the price difference on the phone but when they changed the price and subject so fast I knew and he knew exactly what he tried to do and it just did not feel good. I think that fairly justifies a 2 star review.Again, probably does good work but a trustworthy shop at this price range shouldnt be doing what they did. Just as an example of how another shop handles this - I called another specialty shop after this with the same numbers/story my mechanic gave me and they were much less confident + honest saying were happy to rerun diagnostics and try to figure it out - we usually do, it will cost $xx to start, but it seems like wed probably come to the same conclusion or need to spend more time taking apart the car. Now thats honest/trustworthiness.
Tom and the entire PV Garage staff are great to work with. They take care of my family of cars (Prius, Land Cruiser, MDX, and Ram 3500). As you can tell they work on almost all makes and models and do a great job of not only issues that need diagnostics but also regular maintenance.
I am glad I discovered your garage, my only regret was it took me several years of questionable service from the dealership before I found you!My vehicle was assessed, repaired and readied for me to pick up in short order. I would highly recommend PVG to anyone who values great service in a neighborhood setting. Thanks again , I will be back for my next service in the months ahead.
The Portola Valley Garage was my go to place back in the sixties, making my 1937 Cadillac a reliable and most enjoyable daily driver. After a decades long time off, when I moved to Los Angles, I returned to the bay area and asked them to service my Ford F150. Their skills, attention to detail, and competency hadnt waned a bit - how often can you return to a business that you regarded as the best, to find that its just as good as you remembered?
The battery was relatively new, so I suspected some other problem. They checked it out and found that it was in fact the battery. They replaced it promptly and prorated the charge based on the useful life of the old one. Very happy client. I am impressed with their honesty and attention to their work.
Once again your team went above and beyond normal service!!! On a cold morning my car wouldnt start. Even though you were short handed that day, you were able to not only install a new battery, but diagnose and replace the starter within 24 hours. Pretty cool service.
PV Garage continues to be a standard for excellence and honesty. Really happy to take our trusty Tahoe-trip Lexus GX470 there to get solid work done. Its a 2005, so theyre great with helping us identify repairs that are necessary vs. nice to have (ex. the cost/benefit opinion for repairs weve considered that have been more cosmetic.)
5 visit for a Porsche and a BMW and F250 truck over 2 years of fully satisfisfactory experience. I intend to be PVGs permanent customer for all automotive repair needs.Tom is a very personable, customer oriented yet very business like individual. But that is not why I have chosen PVG.I have seen shear competence in all matters automotive here. His staff Tim and others are automotive task master with deep knowledge and experience. I prefer not leave anything to chance and that is how I see these folksI live two miles from PVG, so, access is not an issue for me. I am retired, so taking a little longer to get the car fixed is also not an issue.I wrote and posted the early version of this review about a year ago. Today, I am simply updating it. Tim is now the customer face and the office manager, but he still does the first technical problem assessment. He is world class in skills, and his no BS dealing with customers. I honestly believe the new arrangement is a noticeable improvement. I have firmed up my resolve to use Portola Garrage for all things automotive. It works very well, and simplifies my life
Tim quickly diagnosed all the issues that we knew about, as well as pinpointed problems that my daughter described but were not immediately obvious. He dealt with insurance without us having to make a single call. So pleasant to work with and will definitely be taking all our cars there from now on! Thanks, Tim!!
My car started making a nasty, scary, metal-on-metal, scraping noise. Even though it was Monday morning at 8am... the busiest time for a repair shop... Tim took a ride with me to hear the noise, diagnosed the problem (rear brakes), and had the repair done by end of the day. Ive never had anything less than awesome service from Tim, Tom, and the guys at PV Garage!
Tim is a genius! My car didn’t start, I tried everything before towing it here: changing battery, starter, checked alternatorCame in, he changed the gear to neutral and started it and tell me it’s a bad neutral safety switch, typical of automatic transmissions.I’ve researched how to DIY fix on the internet pretty thoroughly and nvr heard it. Since it’s super easy and he reckon I can do it, he didn’t charge me at all. Super nice guy!
I feel so fortunate to have PV Garage in our neighborhood. Tim and Tom have always taken superlative care of me and my vehicles. Most recently, Tim went above and beyond by taking his precious time to prep me thoroughly for my extensive “walk around” DMV exam for my non-commercial A license. Is that amazing or what? And I passed!!
After driving for one day, on the next day I drove to Los Altos to geta haircut. Then I got not start the car. I waited for 60 minutes to getAAA. The AAA driver told me that the battery was totally drained, andthat I should drive it for 60 minutes. The next day, I held problems again.
I so appreciate the help and gracious service of the men that give me a ride back to my home and then pick me up. This makes such a difference. Your service is very efficient and I can always trust that what you say you will do - you do. I trust that my car is in very skilled and efficient hands. I will always recommend you.Thank you.Barbara VarenhorstBarbara Varenhorst
Doesnt get any better! The best personal service and the best auto service - ever. These guys really know their stuff and can relay it in the clearest of laymens terms and the clearest of technical, which I greatly appreciate. Timely, professional, reasonable. Just doesnt get any better!

2022-03-04I’ve had a problem with my battery for over 2 yrs and gone to a different mechanic multiple times only to have the same problem. Tom fixed it in less than 2 hrs and this time I’m sure it’s fixed properly. No more getting stuck on the road, no more towing me to the nearest mechanic, Tom’s diagnostic and repair was spot on. I have enthusiastically told people how wonderfully great my experience was here. It’s special to whole heartedly feel I couldn’t get better service on my car anywhere else. I know because my car has been to other mechanics who haven’t been able to fix it and Tom did it so quickly.

2022-05-28Had a coolant leak in my Audi and Tom was able to squeeze me in and did the repair quickly. PVG is the best! I come from Cupertino to have my car serviced here because I trust Tom.

2022-04-22Tom and the crew did an amazing job of diagnosing a very odd electrical problem, finding the required replacement part and installing it. Car went from being largely inoperable to running better than it has in years. Not likely other shops could have done this repair

2022-04-11Based on the recommendations of several friends, I took my car to Tom and his team for a required maintenance after my technician of several years retired. I couldnt be happier with the fast and friendly service I received. Communication was excellent, the price was very reasonable and my tire warning light problem is finally fixed after persisting for 2+ years. I have crossed find a new auto repair shop off my to do list.10/14/21 Another great experience with Tom & his crew. My car was ready a day ahead of schedule and their thorough maintenance inspection turned up a wheel bearing problem. Now that it is fixed the car is running much better. So grateful that I always know where to go when my car needs servicing or has a problem.4/7/22 As usual, another fast (extremely!!), friendly and reasonably priced service from Portola Valley Garage. I just needed a smog certificate for DMV renewal. It wasn’t a rush job so Tom could easily have taken several days to complete the check but he just happened to have a break in the schedule and had my car ready less than 2 hours after I dropped it off. 5+ stars!
