Peoples Park is a good place to go to if you want to experience fallout 4 in real life, it has all the chems, raiders, and even super mutants! Berkeleys brotherhood of steel forcibly ejected me from their group due to smoking crack, so I have decided to join the the raiders and live in peoples park. The evil institute want to knock our tents down and build useless things like public services and student housing. Like how are is are those things more important and prosperous than our great tent village.
The most famous city block in known history I was say,and its not because Ive traveled to most known small famous city block or even conducted a research on the subject so dont think Im some form of a scholar. Im from Berkeley... Daaaàa. Here you have in Peaples park the embodiment what the word in meaning of hippie.peace love and hair grease.
Dude, I was there Monday afternoon minding my own business when I happened on to a man who had gifted me some acid. Seeing as it looked tasty, I promptly went home shortly thereafter and consumed said acid.Fast forward to 3am today, Tuesday, and Im still enjoying the journey. Thats so good and typical of peoples park. Come for the sun, stay for the acid, ha ha ha...
This park is for all people needing a place to just be the people they are without being judged or run off into dangerousness. This park isnt for the kind of people who have too many empty complaints and more than enough money to solve those complaints themselves. Please be charitable, kind, patient and tolerant of everyone no matter the situation. You can always remove yourself from it and be on your way. Take care of this space and dont make messes you cant clean respectably.
For an authentic slice of Berkeley history visit this pretty park surrounded by historic buildings. People’s Park was created by 1960s radicals and has been an irreverent living monument to that tumultuous era ever since! Don’t let people scare you off unless you can’t deal with unhoused people (sadly a fact of life in today’s America)
Sad now it shows us how fragile the economy is for the rest of us Im about to lose my place so it looks like an inviting place for me to live since there really isnt a place for a legally blind person to be able to afford on social security ever if I share a room with a stranger at an sro its still 3/4 of what Im paid so I would starve or eat ramen once a day and nothing else to survive
Im going to miss Peoples Park when its no longer; making way for a large apartment complex thereby lessening the housing crisis in Berkeley. I dont begrudge having more housing in Berkeley, but I do feel a little bit sad because Peoples Park was a place a lot of homeless people hung out together. Its been part of Berkeley for a long time and symbolizes, for me at least, the tolerant spirit of this city. I guess the removal of it is symbolic too. Its the new, Whiter, less diverse, Weve-been-priced-out-of-SF spirit of Berkeley.
As Americans we should be Ashamed that so many of our fellow people are so down and out. Homeless people arent any different from the the gentry....STRIKE THAT, they are different, The homeless are humble, respectful, thoughtful, helpful. They suffer in silence while the rich pad bank accounts with money theyll never live to spend. That is wrong, sorry if you cant handle the truth.
This park gave me a place to sleep when i was going thru some rough times in my life. It is kind of a well known safe place for travelrs. Not the best of parks, deffinetly dont bring your kids here, no more play equipment. Dont walk around barefoot you might get stuck by a needle. But there are some good parts about the park. On weekdays around 1pm there are free meals provided. Lots of memories made atthis park.
As a non-homeless person I feel very uncomfortable coming here. I have nothing against homeless people but as a female in my twenties I dont appreciate all the unwanted cat calls and general harassment that comes along with this park. Its such a big park in downtown Berkeley which would be a nice escape from all the concrete but I dont feel entirely safe coming here which is frustrating. I wish we could all just coexist and enjoy the park without unnecessary harassment.
Historical landmark and much more. I am one of those marginal people you may have seen at the park. I often eat at the free meal that is served there in weekdays. I appreciate the existence of Peoples Park. Generally its a mellow place to hang out. Its no more dangerous than Golden Gate park in San Francisco. One murder since 1969.
Peoples Park is amazing. So many different people from different places and walks of life. Tired of UC blaming the homeless for the parks state of disrepair, when they themselves claim ownership of the park. If they own it, maintaining it should be their job, not the job of the people that spend their time there. When garbage cans are filled to the brim, and theres no toilet paper, soap, and the water pressure sucks, they blame the homeless, when it is their job to remove the garbage and stock the restrooms. I tried my hardest as long as I could afford it, to stock the bathrooms with at least toilet paper. Im homeless and paying out of pocket for something that the University should be responsible for.
If you are looking for somewhere inexpensive to have some lunch then come here as you have plenty to choose from. At this centre you cam buy almost anything from pork to chicken and everything in between and it will just cost under S$10 For a nice meal.We have pork and duck meat with a pork soup and it was delicious. If you want to try something different then go for the black skin chicken. For drinks you can get anything from water to tea or coffee.
Forget any and all of your local history because Peoples Park only serves as a forceful reminder of Berkeleys failures. Aside from the screaming crack zombies, you might sometimes be approached by old wizards who want to lecture you about the dangers of capitalism for some unknown reason. Place has been completely destroyed of all its natural beauty.
Other than the university trying guerilla tactics to get rid of the park to build more housing for students, its an interesting park. DO NOT USE THE RESTROOMS THERE! (Go to Peets Coffee or Moes Books instead, trust me) Definitely some....interesting....individuals in that area, but ive never had a horrible experience. Probably would be a lot more kid/family friendly if they hadnt removed the playground.
Peoples Park is a precious green space. I play live acoustic music at Peoples Park whenever I get a chance, guitar songs, jazz, funk, folk, rock, samba, bossa nova, percussion... I have old friends there and did community gardening there for five years, growing 13 foot tall corn and green beans, and all kinds of stuff. The trees and plants there are good old friends too. Ive heard lots of great bands on the Free Speech Stage, summer concerts, the Berkeley World Music series, drum jams, dancing. Its very interesting, Ive learned a lot there, talking to people, about history, people, culture, plants, gardening.
Great outdoor basketball court and general community meeting space frequently fouled by people of ill temper and modest means, still has that refuge of last resort feel to it on some days. Take no offense and give no offense and you will have a rewarding experience. You can even mind your own business (seems hard at first but Ive seen people do it.). BYOBasketball on most days unless there is one in the tree. Free meals on weekends provided by various. Good concerts. Dogma more problematic than actual dogs. Beware of imminent eminence. (The education boutique needs beds for the bourgeoning intelligensia.) Get your snapshots and hookshots before the edifice shows up. Berkeley still claims it is afraid of draft-dodging mobs lured by peanut butter sandwiches, poetry, and promotional police actions. In the event that the park is destroyed to build edifice, please meet at the park. :)
Only giving it one star because zero is not an option. The peoples park of today is not the same as the one of the civil rights movement. As a U.C. Berkeley student, I have to listen to the sounds of peoples park day and night from my dorm window. Usually its the typical fighting crackheads, but on Sundays they usually have God awful amateur concerts that can be heard throughout the student housing. Just two days ago I heard a man be shot dead in the middle of the afternoon. The sad fact of the matter is that the park now serves as a pit stop for organized crime; a cover for both human trafficking as well as drug trafficking. I hope that Carol Christ tears the park down and builds new student housing, Id hate for another generation of Berkeley students to suffer at the hands of this public space.
Screw all the homeless bashing. Peoples Park is complex in its nature, from its abrupt and violent birth in the 60s...people died.bringing it up, to its troubled, poignant history as a druggy mecca...which is both true and exagerated. Its you house mice callous and fascist attitude that all us houseless bums(dare you to call me that to my face) are the cancer of society...I digress...Peoples Park is a necessary stop that all can find some worth out of.
Ahhh the peoples park. Crossroads of the clash between so many forces and dreams. Where the capitalist corporate UC system confronts the idealism of 60s Berkeley counterculture. Food not bombs and riot police dance a tango fraught with the ironic question.....how do we best serve the people
A diamond in UC Berkeleys crown, and so a must-visit for parents considering sending their children to the educational paradise of Berkeley, California. (Visiting Peoples Park is *very* educational.) Free needles are available at all hours. Just walk around a bit, and youll find one jammed into your foot. (If youre bleeding too much as a result, youll find that the closest hospital is a short limp away, at Ashby, though try not injure yourself on Friday or Saturday night, as the ER is overcome with a mysterious rash of alcohol poisonings every week during the school year.) The residents of the park helpfully flow out onto all the nearby sidewalks, so that just by walking by you can converse with the locals and learn a bit about the Berkeley experience. Be sure to bring spare change or your running shoes. These canny entrepreneurs will also be happy to offer you a number of medicinal and pharmaceutical products at all hours of the day, even when the rest of the city sleeps. Finally, a great place to rest for a few hours under the shady trees, but your must follow the local protocol of either having one to two sentries at all times or else a very angry dog.
The only piece of land taken back by the people.the history of peoples park and what happened in berkeley is extremeley profound if you are uneducated about it check out a movie berkeley in the 60s.but so much history throughout its birth has happened .berkeley in the 90s.and berkeley now.peoples park is what happens when imminent domain takes peoples homes.the people take back the land that was stolen from them and not being used so they could make a park.then the nationall guard took the park and all the schools of berkeley were surounded and gassed.you walk by and see smelly person or rat or whatever but you dont have a clue.

2022-06-06I rate this place a 3. 5 stars for the people trying the best they can to live here. 1 star for the government of Berkeley in terms of supporting them. The city government should do better by these people!

2022-03-17We (Bồ Đề Tâm group) went there to do a homeless event. There are a lot of homeless here. People are nice here. We often see other groups of volunteers coming out to also give things, cleanup the space,...help out however they can. We all know this isnt solving all the deepest roots causing homeless problems, but we do what we can at the moment...The homeless people are also nice. Often people only take what they need. Many of them have some sort of mental illness and of course there are so many other reasons why they ended up there...I saw people singing, playing music, playing chest...They appreciate when we give them stuffs. Some even come and chat, give jokes, or share about their stories/ mistakes ...When we do our event, we usually brought hot lunches (rice with meat and vegetarian spaghetti, hard boiled eggs, cookies). We brought 60 bags of dry food ( cracker, cup of noodle, water, banana, tangerines, ...) And 60 bags of hygiene items ( toilet paper, toothpaste, tooth brush, hand sanitizers, masks, socks,...) We brought some gently used clothes (jackets, pants, shirts). We usually do a few homeless events per year, and depending on the season we try to bring helpful items. Like we bring small individual apple pies for Thanksgiving. In the winter, we try to get socks, hats, blankets , sleeping bags, and tarps or even cough drops...Tarps and Sleeping bags are popular. Especially sleeping bags since they are a bit pricey. We arent always able to get enough for everyone. Its sad to see people fighting over it sometimes...

2022-03-08It used to be a symbol for a movement that promoted the individual rights of a society to freely assemble, practice free speech, and to preserve nature against greedy corporate expansion. Little by little the University picked away at it, cutting down trees, neglecting the bathrooms and park features until people became disinterested in preserving it.

2022-05-17I used to come here as a young adult and hang out with my friends. There were only a few homeless people that lived there back then, and they were mostly friendly. Now I dont feel safe even walking by it. Its just a homeless encampment now and violent crimes being committed there almost daily.

2022-03-19Dont let these idiots, tear down a historical national monument. I remember when I was way younger when I first came to Berkeley and was umm what youd call bohemian. In search of myself well I lived frugally with what I could carry on my back. Anyways I used to try to sleep in peoples park per what Ive heard of it my dads accounts of it in the 70s and well the name, duh. Well on all attempts I was awoken very rudely by campus police and told to get up and go sleep on sidewalk after being searched and name ran and hassled and belittled. So years later there are people living there which Is awesome I just went up there abd helped patch the freespeech stage with a great friend the clevinger and a new friend. Anyways they are fixing to tear down peoples park and build more dorms for a school with more than enough dorms an outrage DO NOT LET THIS TAKE PLACE THIS IS A SACRED HISTORICAL PLACE with huge REDWOODS that will be taken down. This horrific tragedy cannot take place. 😢
