They are really out here charging 103 a night for some moldy converted barracks. This is the most disgusting hotel I have ever stayed in. And this is what the government expects us to stay in? Mold, roaches, dirty shower, stains on carpets, no AC and a fan provided covered in dust, coffee machine leaks, mold in the freezer. Had to shower with shoes on my entire stay. Silver fish everywhere.
This was by far the nastiest, dingiest, low quality Navy Gateway Ive ever stayed in. The interior of the hotel is repulsive and outdated, there are stains everywhere, and it generally resembles the quality of a low grade motel 6. There were BUGS in the bed and in the rest of the hotel room. We were forced to stay in this location for ROM for two weeks, and I figured we would have a better quality of life, considering we could not leave our room for two weeks. I expected more out of San Diego, and I hope I never have to come near this location again.
Definitely my worst experience at a military hotel (and I thought the Marines were bad). When I checked in it was very late, and they told me that there werent any air conditioned rooms available, during a week with highs above 85, but that I could keep checking back. I didnt realize that air conditioning was some luxurious amenity in a place known for being warm and sunny, but since it was close to midnight I figured it would be fine for one night. Lug my 50 lb suitcase out of a parking garage and up two flights of stairs and get to a very hot and smelly living room/lounge/storage for a heavily stained and moldy mattress. Open the door to the room, and guess what--there were people already there. We all screamed, I ran out, made sure I had the right room (yup, key definitely worked). Called the front desk, and they were pretty rude until she realized that she had given me an already occupied room. No real apology. At this point I called every hotel, lodge, and other gateway remotely close, and everywhere was booked, so I went back to the lobby. Luckily for me, it was after midnight so an air conditioned room was available because of a no show. There are no deadbolts on the door, so there is no way to know that they wont double book my room during my stay. So basically, if you dont value comfort, cleanliness, privacy, and think sharing a bathroom could be a great way to meet people--this would be a great place to stay! I will never make the mistake of staying here again, especially since I might not get lucky enough to have a nice room that is at still stained and moldy, but at least cool.
Staff is friendly and helpful but the place seems to be somewhat falling apart. My room shared a bathroom which is far from ideal (between the lock on your side being just a little latch and not knowing the person youre sharing with or if you can leave you things out or in your room without it being stolen.)and there are tiles around the showers that are falling off. The furniture is pretty outdated, only thing that seems to be newer is the mattress and bedding. At least the bed is comfortable. The laundry facilities are on site however a good chunk of them do not work.
They have me over in Copp Hall for my ROM at $103/night. Heater is broken, random stains EVERYWHERE, carpet is disgusting, toilet seat is broken, random mold/coagulated dust everywhere, water damage, Wifi kicks me and makes me log back in again every 3-5 minutes. Overall, this place is dingy as hell. Absolute disgrace that this is the quality our sailors receive. Especially for $103 a night.
Legitimately the worst room I’ve ever stayed in for $100+ a night let me tell you I had a big roach in the shower ,some dead spiders around the room and a small mouse a few days later I immediately checked out of this place I don’t understand how living standards could reach this low on a military installation. Also no working A/C but I did receive a plug in fan. I am still baffled by how nonchalant the staff was when I informed them of the rodent running around my room. Honestly you could save your money and find a bridge to live under with how poor the standards are here. Less than 1 star if I could.
Good place with good service. Rooms are a little outdated but it is to be expected. They have a big refrigerator and good sized microwave. No bathtub but shower is a good size. Price is very reasonable and very safe because it is on base. Laundry service is free and they give you a kuerig machine and coffee in the room.
Required by orders. Clean but odd smell. Not a great location for where I had to muster daily. Very limited dining options. Very. However, much nicer than many other military housing. The air conditioner and heater unit worked well. Free box of Ramen noodles in the room! Front desk staff was knowledgeable and helpful. The water smelled a little funny , that sulphur smell, but there were signs up that they were working on the system to alleviate it. Housekeeping did a great job. I would give it a higher rating if the physical plant was better
If you want a hotel with no air condition, non working microwave this is just the place for you. Had to be escorted to my room because I left my ID in my room and my key got damaged. Ive lived here 2 months. Come on. They couldve just asked for my phone number. Every bathroom mate in the shared bathroom I get is disgusting and locks me out of the bathroom for hours on end. Tried to leave here and they said it was against policy. Which makes no sense at all because all my friends left. 0/10 would not recommend.
I have stayed here on and off since the 90s. Back then the rooms were much much cheaper. Shared bath (barracks rooms) were 22.00 a night. Now they are like 67.00. Private bath are 83.00. The staff is generally polite, but almost robotic in their customer service. Most of these buildings are slated for demolition in the near future. convenience is great, cleanliness is good, price is way too high for the value. I stay at Mira Mar where I get a suite of rooms for half the price. Overall though, Navy Gateway is not a bad place to stay, but when it costs more than Navy Lodge theres something wrong.
It was my first time staying here so the attentive and very welcoming staff was especially nice since I was checking in at 2am and exhausted from traveling. Room was dated but had clean sheets and clean towels. Shower could have used a little bit more cleaning but didnt care, again, 2am arrival. Room had no heating/ac, but it being relatively colder in SD, there were enough blankets to keep warm; however, I could definitely see this as a problem in the summer. Like every gateway, a small keurig with coffee and teas are provided which is excellent. The hall I was in had that odd 4-room all connected with a common area set up, which isnt the worst, but if youre a light sleeper it might cause you some trouble as the walls arent more sound dampening than sound proof. Definitely a decent place to catch some quick sleep if youre on orders or traveling between duty stations.
The rooms are a descent size, but are decorated very dated and could use an upgrade. The rooms are in a quad layout and there is a shared living room area. The rooms are clean and the bed was very comfortable. The air conditioner also worked well. The office staff who checked us in was very friendly.
Checked in a little early on July 1, no problem! Stayed at Ford Hall. My wife and I were very comfortable. Great bed, pillows just great and soft towels. Never experienced soft towels there while I was active duty. Microwave worked without any problems and the group kitchen was very clean. I left plenty of stuff when I left with a note for all to use.Made breakfast in the kitchen a couple of days.Digital card worked just fine with no hiccups. Front desk crew and room attendants were just top notch. Free laundry to boot, just made the stay that more enjoyable. We will be back next year. Thanks a million and keep up the great standards.Enjoyed free movies at the Naval Station. Glad they turned on to the fact that if you make it free, they will come. They did and spend money on drinks and popcorn. New release films that we might not have watched otherwise.
I gave it two stars because the staff is friendly and helpful and now the bad stuff.- showerhead is shorter than me(only 56), shower is slippery and water pressure is non-existant.- Parts of the wall and ceiling are falling apart.- $101 per night, this place is not worth that price so its overpriced.- Also if your unlucky like my friend your room will have a connecting bathroom like my friend. Conclusion: wouldnt recommend, try the Navy Lodge instead.
Other reviews that I had read have me fairly low expectations of the facility. Once I showed up though I was put into Cobb Hall. The room was older, but still clean and overall pleasant. The shower head is mounted rather low, but its usable with some vending down. No AC, but its San Diego... The temperature never gets all that crazy here where an AC its a necessity.
I actually really enjoyed my stay. The rooms were spacious and clean. I only payed $57 and for that price during labor day weekend you cant really expect much but this hotel delivered quality. My only objections is that if you arent staying in the main building it cant be really difficult to find your room because the set up is weird but aside from that i had an amazing stay.
I cant believe a hotel doesnt have a/c! My room key stopped working twice. Customer service was decent but it couldnt make up for the poor quality of the hotel. They need to take better care of military personal staying there for training/tad/vacation. It would be better to pay 20 more a night for a hotel off base. I will NEVER stay at this hotel again.
Literally the worst hotel Ive ever stayed in. They know regulations require us to stay here if its available and they make us do that because they know that no one would want to because this place is a heap. Shared common area rooms, youre living in old barracks that they added thrift store furniture to, not even an AC in most of the rooms. For 101$ a night you cant even get AC? The Navy Lodge is right across the street and they are much nicer.NGIS: you need to remodel/rebuild!
They have done a lot to fix up the rooms. Last time I was here I remember wires hanging out of the walls and stains on the carpet. At Ford Hall the room seemed recently renovated. Room and bathroom are clean and for those that would be staying for an extended period the closets are large and the washers and dryers are now free. The down side is that the room keys are horrible. I had to get mine rekeyed a couple times over the span of three days.
Converted barracks masquerading as hotel rooms. Beds are usually pretty decent, so for a quick stay, no worries. Very run down buildings, so plenty of places for bugs to invade. I only stay during official travel because the system requires it. Front desk personnel were helpful, as my key initially worked once, then died. Drove over for a new one.
I had to stay here for 2 weeks and I can say this is by far my worst experience ever at a hotel. The staff was not helpful for any problems and when I asked about working the air conditioner because it was 100 degrees outside they rudely told me there is no a/c in the rooms that they provide a fan and you can open your window. Note the fan they provide is a small desk fan that just moves the hot air around. I would highly recommend NOT staying at this hotel if you can help it.
Best hotel experience to date!Very friendly staff; changed our sheets daily, and refreshed all the items in the room daily or more when we asked. One of the few hotels with a keurig that was fully stocked at all times.Laundry facilities were always close by which was very useful for a week long stay.Free wifi and cable TV made the nights between activities enjoyable and allowed us to complete some work and plan out our daily adventures a breeze.
For $70 a night you get a private bed and bath. And shared living space. The rooms have no a/c. While the bed was nice. The bathroom looks like it is rotting apart. The only hotel ive ever stayed at with no a/c and no breakfast. Ive stayed at hotels for half the price that were better put togther and had more amenities than this hotel.
Worst Navy Gateway experience to date. The primary issue is that its a craps shoot: you might get a nice room, or you might get a tiny room, depending on what room is available when you arrive. In either case, its not really a private room, since theres a shared common area. They just took some old barracks rooms and made them single rooms instead of shared, and then started charging people for the privilege. The result is you have a room with two walk-in closets, one of which has the fridge, microwave, safe, and Keurig; the room is so tiny that the door to the closet only barely clears the bed.Its not terrible, but definitely the absolute worst Navy Gateway Inn Ive ever stayed in.
Its pretty cheap, the rooms are clean and well taken care of. The house keeping services are pretty nice as well. They provide a microwave and mini fridge, my specific room you shared a bathroom with another person, two showers, one toilet. It wasnt bad whatsoever considering you have washer and dryer 24/7. The NEX Minimart is about a block away and its open all night long so you can get any kind of snacks, the bowling alley is next to it which provides all sorts of food as well. They have a front desk which is manned 24 hours and they can help you with mail or even if you just lost your key.Overall it was a pleasant experience and I would visit again.
You like to share your bathroom, this is the please for you! You dont like air conditioner and want to save the environment to the so called global warming. This is the place you can go back in time to see how the buildings where built back in the days. The beds are nice and you can have a nice comfy bed.
All Im wondering is why is there no AC. Summer time it gets ridiculously humid and hot. Opening windows does not help due to trains whistling all the time. Rooms are great but people cant live with just a tiny desk fan. This is a health hazard risking mold to spread. Worst place to stay at.
I’ve never been so disappointed. What I only expected was a bed and a shower. They’re both here, but..... I am at a loss for words. I feel defrauded for spending $83 per night. That’s what I spent on a Motel 8 in the Meadowlands with a blood splatter on the ceiling. I was much happier there! If you are an E-1, an O-10 or anywhere in between - avoid staying here at all costs!!
Its not a bad place like some would have you believe. I just think they feel entitled or something.Anyways, if you are visiting someone in the area or someone who lives on base, its not a bad place to stay.Otherwise, I would choose a different hotel because its not in a very convenient location. Not much that National City has to offer.
The Rooms and the buildings they are in are older and a bit rustic, but are maintained well. The buildings themselves are spread over several areas along the main road of the dry side of the base. Stayed at Copp and Vesta Halls during the course of my 115 day stay for a school. Most rooms actually do not have air conditioning, rather there a ceiling fans, which is a downer. WiFi for the most part is good enough for HD streaming and gaming. Military personnel and their families on TAD/PCS orders and DOD contractors have priority for reservations over those wanting rooms for leisure purposes. You must book weeks or months in advance for leisure stays.
Its only day one of a 14 day stay. This has by far been my worst stay at a Navy Gateway in my Military Career. The Front Desk Employees are unprofessional, the room has an odor and the bed was lumpy. The heater does not work so I will have to go to Walmart and buy a space heater. The water is not hot, its more like lukewarm warm but you have to let it run for 5 mins just for it to get warm, so I guess I will have to shower at the fitness center or off base. The lock on the door is broken so I am sleeping in a room with an unlocked door. Just a total waste of the Governments money. Too tired to even go to the front office tonight but they will definitely hear from me tomorrow...I agree..I give this place a 1 out of 10...just terrible!
Lobby area was a but difficult to find without prior knowledge of where it was at. Rooms are split into groupings, some are reconditioned barracks some are reconditioned houses. The one I am staying in does not have AC or heat which I found to be an oddity, must be rough in the summer.
Absolutely terrible..What kind of hotel doesnt have air conditioned rooms. Especially in california where its 80s and 90s all the time. Ants practically everywhere. And this..this is what cracks me up the most: You cant have people of opposite sex in your rooms?! What kind of shoddy ass hotel tells you who and who you cannot invite. Highly recommend skipping over this place.
Had a horrible experience. We checked in we were given our keys to our room on the 3rd floor with no elevator. We get there and the room wasnt available due to no toilet and they were going to paint it. We go back and they give us another room with no AC. We woke up in the middle of the night and to find several huge roaches crawling everywhere. Of course didnt sleep. As we checked out and cancelled our next night we told them that we shouldnt get charged for the night before since it was horrible and couldnt sleep. The lady said Im sorry but we need to charge you for the first night. Never again!
This gateway inn is old and musty. The buildings are spread out over several blocks, making it difficult to find the building you may be in. However, this is the best hotel to stay in if you are participating in a school at the training support center. Its an easy eight minute walk from the inn, which can save an hour or more of travel through the crowded gates. Overall, convenience is 5*, service is 4*, and quality of the inn is 1*.
No stars. Only put one because I had to check at least one to let me post. Forced to make reservations at NGIS. After traveling for 10 hours and finally finding somewhere to park and walking for 10 minutes to actually find the building (no signs on how to actually find the place that you can read from a car while driving) they said they didnt have any rooms with air conditioning. Waited over an hour in case someone checked out or didnt show up. Finally got a non availability and luckily found something within per diem close to the base. Just one more reason that we should not have to use NGIS for any reason. Completely unsatisfactory, had I known there wouldnt be a room available, I could have just booked a room somewhere and known where I was going before I left. Staff was very friendly, though.
In San Diego for school, staying at Donnelly Hall. First off, I have to share a bathroom. Ok, Im only a first class, Ill survive. My room is damp, smells like mildew, and I cant even change the temperature. The kicker though? I can hear the people use the rest room on the floor above me! Its like they are peeing on me. This is going to be a long two weeks.
As I was staying there an I was about to leave to go out I was a lady in an blue dress suit I think she was a supervisor she was like young I saw her yelling at one of the older employees there if I was the manager or head supervisor I would have fired that lady for abusing her power of Authority an there was five other people that were staying there just saw what happened I feel bad for the people that work there if that lady can’t stand older people who work hard then she should not be a supervisor
Bad customer service. One could clearly see that the desk clerk did not like her job. She did not address me, I was standing RIGHT THERE in front of her and she continued to tell the other front desk clerk, to tell me the answers to my questions she was not busy, just looking at her phone, for instance, Me: What time does the guest have to be out? Grumpy Desk Clerk: Tell her its on the paper she signed. See what i mean. Just rude. If you dont like your job, quit.
No Air conditioning in hot San Diego weather? Staying in an old, reconditioned barracks? Room furnishings worn and threadbare? At least they gave us a cup of noodles! Glad I only spent one night. For the $70 you pay here, you could get a room at the Navy lodge that has AC! Avoid this place unless you have absolutely no other choice.
My wife and I always checks in NGIS, after a two days flight from Asia, we arrived at the Ford Hall, C Bldg. 4 luggages between myself, which I had difficulty handling along with my wife, struggling to get to our unit including our ride who has his left side paralyzed due to his stroke several years ago. We were just being watched by the staff wearing blue utility uniforms. No one offered to assist, when we try to make contact for assistance, they just cassualy turns away acts as if they werent watching us the whole time. Otherwise, all good?
It an ok place to stay I only stay there before I go underway. My main issue is I call them to let them know I left my Fitbit in the room. She asked me where did you leave it exactly? I said on the nightstand but, when the housekeeper clean the room she/he will see it. So if its found in the bathroom and I said nightstand I dont get it back? Anyways she said can you come back I said no Im already on the ship she said well if the housekeeper find it than we will call you. I just said ok whatever. I know already Ima have to buy a new one which is sad because, I can tell already there is no integrity there

2022-01-24This is not a bad place to stay if you are TDY to San Diego base. The rooms have a decent size refrigerator with a true freezer and microwave. It also comes with paper towels and a single cup coffee maker that they provide pods for. The rooms have a walk in closet and the bathrooms are a decent size. There is a lot of parking so you will not be without a spot unless you are in the main building that doesn’t seem to have enough parking. You are within walking distance of the dining facility which is a plus in the morning if you like to eat there or are stuck eating there (it is not a good dining option if you can afford to eat out). The staff keeps the rooms clean and are friendly.

2022-05-16Understand I’m leisure travel but I feel like this should not happen. 1. Upon arrival was told A/C (policy is cancel reservation after 4pm would still charge you) so I drove 35 hours so it is what is. 2. Between the hours of 0600 -1200 could not get a hot shower at all. Called Office was told someone will come then told the maintenance man is lunch would be here after 1200. Now as Disabled Veteran this should not be happening to me or any person, sailor, army or soldier anywhere. Spending $100 a night some basic should be given to anyone and everyone. Sad I have to write this review but this what I experienced in COPP Hall.

2022-02-08Good customer service. There are lots of cockroaches so keep your back zipped and off the ground. Right next to the beach so I imagine its hard to keep them away. When I say good customer service I speak of the maintenance guy. As soon as you call hes there in a matter of minutes to help you out.

2022-05-02Rooms were outfitted with dated furniture, but was comfortable. Need to be about 56 for the shower, almost shipboard like. Cant be the price though. Cleaned the room daily, staff was friendly and courteous.

2022-06-06Im going to this NGIS for BDOC and the reservation process has been horrendous thus far. Had to call multiple times just to speak to someone only to be put on hold almost as soon as they picked up. Was rushed off the phone after them taking my credit card, still waiting on them to email my booking confirmation after calling twice to that effect. Only reason I am staying here is because my schoolhouse is very close by. I will update with my in person experience when I get there.

2022-03-19The person locked me out the bathroom twice and he was peeing on the toilet. Room had no heat. But the bed was comfortable

2022-03-15Clean rooms, friendly staff. Key cards get wiped easily if they touch anything else in your wallet. Some rooms dont have AC, so ask to be sure.

2022-04-21This place is dirty and hasn’t been remodeled in ages. It’s a series of run down former barracks rooms scattered all over the base. When the room key card fails it’s a long hike back to the front desk

2022-04-11Rooms are essentially like Barracks rooms converted into hotel rooms. Navy Lodge is cheaper and has better front desk service.

2021-11-16Room is old. NO AC IN ROOM. NO ELEVATOR IN BLDG. first walk into the room you smell the old. Lock is old feels insecure. Windows old and the window screen outside is broken which means while I open window bugs will come in. Well even though I didnt open window there are still bugs. I killed a spider and one with thousands feet. Just be good luck if you scared.
