Meizhou Dongpo restaurant is one of my favorite restaurants for spicy Sichuan food while I was working in Beijing. Named after one of the oldest area in Sichuan province, the restaurant serves family style Sichuan food. I’ve always seen long lines in front of their restaurants. I remember they opened their first restaurant when I was sent to Beijing to work there in 1996.The food they served were excellent at the time when Sichuan food was ranked very low in Beijing due to its homey style of cooking. In early days, Beijing people don’t eat too spicy food. Over time, Meizhou Dong po adopted less spicy cooking and became one of the most popular restaurants in Beijing. They were the first restaurant implemented ISO 9000 quality management in the restaurant business to manage their 12 restaurants and 7,000 employees. The Arcadia location is a new addition which opened its door few years ago in the Arcadia mall. The restaurants in North America deployed plush interior design catering high end clientele. While majority of dinings are done in the open area, the restaurant also offers many private rooms to add prestige in dining entertainment. In addition to the traditional Sichuan dishes on the menu, the restaurant added Peking duck dish which became their anchored dish for the restaurant. For our lunch today, we ordered half a Peking Duck for two of us and a popular Mapo tofu as well as a Dan Dan noodle dish. The duck was excellently roasted with crispy skins. This dish very much matched the Peking duck flavor and texture I had in Beijing. Although the tofu and the Dan Dan noodle were very authentic, they were too spicy for me. I don’t remember having such a spicy flavor for these dishes back in their Beijing restaurants.Overall, the food are good especially the Peking duck. The prices are definitely on the high side for Sichuan food.
I didnt know anything about this place going. All the other places had a long wait bc of limited seating and covid precautions. Got seated quickly and very nice interior. Menu isnt like a usual Chinese restaurant so we just picked a few things. Size of orders are larger than normal but very pleasantly surprised- plates were very tasty. A bit expensive but not crazy once I actually tasted the quality- it supports it.
Ok the food here is good. I like how they were not too salty nor too sweet on dessert, just how I like it. 🙂 However, the 2 stars were taken off because the waiter at the end of check came and ask for tips 😑 NOT because I didnt leave any tips but it was under the teacup in CASH separated with my credit card payment.I would expect more from a high-end restaurant like this, and I felt a bit insulted because he probably wouldnt ask this to non-Asian customers 😏 I actually NEVER Ever had any dining experience would ask tips even if I dont leave it because the service was not good. This was the FIRST time. So I am still a bit shocked. IMO the management of this restaurant should step up and re-train the staffs, at least let them know it is considered rude (here) to ask for tips, because the customers reserve the rights to give out service fee, depending on how the service is at the time.
Came here on a Friday night with 4 other coworkers and there was no wait. Very beautifully decorated interior. Some private dining rooms available too. We ordered the full duck to share, beautiful presentation. Duck was a little fatty for my taste but that’s how it is. We also had the scallops with vermicelli and cucumber, the presentation wasn’t as nice as in the menu but very tender. The Mongolian beef dish was also quite delicious.
This an great upscale restaurant for a finer Chinese Dining experience. It is beautifully decorated in a modern traditional setting. Its is a great place for those special family gatherings, birthday celebrations, or taking that special someone out.Their food is excellent! Its fresh, tastey, and well presented. Some dishes are spicy but it done flavorfully with a medium heat. Their fried whole fish is a piece of art and it tasted as good as it looked.Their service was excellent! They were on top of everything. They gave you new plates and filled your water glasses as you dine. Yeah...You can say it is pricey but... its a fair price for finer dining.
I’ve eaten at Meizhou Dongpo back in Beijing for multiple times. However, this one in Arcadia is particularly disappointing. The Kung Pao chicken is too sweet and not spicy enough. It almost tastes like the fake Kung Pao chicken you get from Panda Express. The squirrel fish is way too dry and it doesn’t feel fresh. Overall, the food was disappointing and quite pricey.
Nice Chinese restaurant. Dishes are nicely presented and their service are great! It could be a bit over-priced but the overall experience is great. The roasted duck was a bit too fat. Crab (steamed with Chinese wine & egg) was great. Will try some other dishes next time :)
At the promenade of Westfield Santa Anita mall lies this wonderful restaurant. I never knew about this restaurant until me and wife just stumbled into it when we went to Chicos. The food is delicious but the serving is small. I ordered 6 items and all doesnt disappoint. If we only knew about the duck, we could had ordered it. But as always, I am going to be a repeat customer.
Conveniently located in Westfield Santa Anita Mall in Arcadia. This restaurant is gives a modern take to traditional Chinese cuisine. They have an extensive menu and everything looked delicious that it was a hard to choose. However, their specialty is the peking duck and the waiter warned us that it takes an hour to make from the time your order is put in. It was worth it though as it is one of the best Ive tasted here in the US. That hour wait isnt even bad because by the time we were able to try out all the other dishes it came out anyways. The restaurant has a modern and a bit more expensive vibe to it and its definitely worth it.
If you dont speak/read Chinese at all, this is a great place without compromising flavors. Big pictures in menus and servers speak perfect English. Got one of my orders pretty late in the meal, pretty much was done. They offered to just cancel the order, but we took it. They gave us free dessert for the mishap. The late dish happened to be my favorite, eggplant. It was really well cooked, had good caramelization, nice bite, good ma and spice flavor... Too bad I was only able to eat 2 pieces after it was freshly made. Duck tongue wasnt that good here, had better at other places in the area. Shuizhuyu is pretty good, fish is soft and tender, fluffy(? Cant seem to think of a word for it). Overall great place, but pricey, and the spice and ma level is a little weak for me. Ambience is classy and modern, a good place for more formal dining.
Always great service. Their own style of food preparation. Duck is great and presented perfectly. Kung Pao chicken or shrimp had a great and authentic flavor. They import the pea tips.....cooked perfectly...spicy won ton soup brings the heat but delicious....A little more than a typical Chinese restaurant but worth it. You get what you pay for...
Excellent food and good service: we went there to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The wait was about 1 hour and 15 minutes. We ordered duck, edd rolls, noodles and country styled sliced pork. The food arrived quite quickly to our surprise. The service was good and the place is clean as always. We are coming back.
Excellent quality food with a good amount of heat to lend itself as authentic Sichuan food. This is certainly one of the more fancier chinese restaurants with a matching and ambiance. It’s family style dining with ala carte items averaging $15. The eggplant is great and the house spicy beef is delicious. The heat might not be up to par to some other Sichuan restaurants in the SGV, but that could be because you don’t want the heat to cover up the quality of the ingredients. All in all, a solid upper tier Sichuan restaurant.
Good food and good service. The waiters/waitress were friendly and accommodating. Its kinda pricey, but still worth it in my opinion because they give you a lot. Make sure that you like spicy food if you go here (which should be a given anyways if you know something about Szechuan cuisine). The ambience inside is nice and refreshing.
We went to this restaurant with friend for birthday dinning in last night, we brought our own red wine, the waiter said that (in Chinese language )they need charge 20$ for open it, I’m agree with that immediately and respectfully, but few minutes later, he come back again and he said: we have our own wine, you can’t take it. And then he said if you drink your own coke, we need charge you 10$/bottle, actually they sell it for 2.5$/bottle. I’m totally angry with that. It’s really poor service. They destroyed our happiness birthday time. I can’t get any respect from their so meaning service. By the way, we still pay 30$tips, totally we cost about 340$, we don’t care that much about price, but it’s overvalue place, I’ll never come back again.
Not recommended!1. dining environmentits a nice, and clean restaurant. waiter was friendly..but the design of the restaurant is very ........unique ?it looks like they want to make the restaurant looks luxury and Oriental style? , but i feel something is wrong here , this is how they do it : put tons of pottery and Writing brush on the walls and front door? use some huge Chinese lanterns? put some old chinese style books on the side? and put some LED light on the back?really? this is how you present luxury or Oriental style? wow......im not a interior designer, or anything like that, but...come on, there are better ways to do this...用餐环境餐厅很干净, 服务生也算友善, 就是装修太丑, 简单来说, 画虎不成反类犬.....2. foodit was ok..... nothing impressive菜的味道真心一般啊, 谈不上好吃3. Value for moneynot worth it, no, not with the unique(ugly) restaurant design...not with the food... Not recommended!价格...太贵了....面对这样一般般的食物, 还有这种满满暴发户偏要装文艺清新范的即视感的装修.........呵呵....真的没有食欲的......非常不推荐...
The food was good, but there were a few problems:-Some menu options werent offered.-Some menu items didnt match with the names on the order form. It was very confusing.-We ran into out of stock problems with things we ordered, more than once.-I got the pork belly dish (forgot name). I would loved it, if not for the sauce. It was sweet, salty, and sour. It was way too powerful, and ruined the dish.-That sauce happened to be on almost all of the dishes we ordered.I also got the jellyfish dish as well as that white fungus dessert soup, which I loved. To summarize the Marinated jellyfish ... Vinaigrette dish, it tasted exactly like seaweed salad in consistency and taste.
Food was okay, but service wasnt. Although we talked to multiple waiters and reminded them several times, one of the courses we ordered was never served. At the last time a male waiter promised that dish would be served in 10 minutes, but they still didnt make it. We waited for more than one hour for that dish, which is just ridiculous. Finally we decided to give up on that dish.
First time eating at this establishment and will not be returning. My rating would have been a one star, but the only saving grace was that the food was good, so they earned a 2 star.Part of the dining out experience is the service, otherwise Id just stay home and cook.We showed up during end of lunch service so they were not busy, maybe three other groups at the time. After taking our initial order for food and drinks, the waitress never bothered to check in with us again. We did have our drinks refilled once by someone else bussing tables.By this time, the dinner crowd started, the restaurant became busy, and we were definitely ignored. However, other tables were being serviced on a regular basis, so my assumption is if you are not of the Asian persuasion, youll be ignored. If deciding to eat here, I would recommend only ordering to go/pick up, since the food is good, but then again, if I feel Im being discriminated against, why even bother patronizing this establishment?
Quick SummaryI really wanted to like this place, but was ultimately disappointed. Decent but not good food. Service felt understaffed. And all this with paying a premium rate. Definitely many better alternatives, but they do offer plenty of outdoor seating (which is a plus during the pandemic)Food- 2 starsRoasted duck- this was pretty typical of all other Peking duck places that specialize in this. The wraps were done well, the duck slices were sliced thin, and plenty of condiments. We ordered 3 ways with it, which came with duck soup and roasted duck bone with spiced salt. These 2 side dishes were just okay. We shouldve stopped here, because it went downhillSerrano pepper beef- this was okay. on the spicier end, but youre basically paying for a savory, spicy bulgolgi for $23.Classic dongpo pork- this was pretty good, but each serving is basically for 1 personwok fried spicy pot- this was excessively salty. wouldnt recommendhot chili oil poached sole fillet- I was impressed by the texture of the sole fillet. This was on the spicy Sichuan numbing side. It was decentService- 3 starsThey felt understaffed as we felt like we had to chase down our waiters. Also the timing was off, as they almost forgot our roasted duck and it arrived towards the end of the mealParkingTheres plenty of lot and street parkingBottom LineFor paying a premium on their food, was very surprised that the food and service did not meet expectations. Theres many more better alternatives, but this location has the benefit of outdoor dining during pandemic times
The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and the staff is friendly, helpful and fast. The food is mostly great too.We ordered the duck which was cooked very well with a perfect, crisp skin and succulent meat. The fried fish we ordered wasnt as good though. It was cooked well but I feel that the sauce was too sweet. By far the star of the meal was the Dongo Pork. It was absolutely delicious!I look forward to coming back here with more friends and family and trying more of their impressively large menu.
This is a high end restaurant that is moderately priced. By moderate I mean about $25 each. That is an estimate because the dishes are plated family style. That is a low price considering the lavish decor amd excellent service. Order the half of duck with buns and two can eat for less than twenty. The food is very good Impressive in fact.
I do not like food here but my wife wants their peking duck.Spent $100 here and get bad service attitude. They told me 20 mind waiting time so I placed order. 20 Mind later I did not get call Then I turn back, Finally I waited for fk-in 50 mins. Standing in cold night outside 30 mins. Their managers just keep saying wait 1 more minute. they refused to cancel my order while I already standing there waiting 45 mins. Do not waste your time there. Btw food is still horrible...
We were seated quickly on a Saturday in the early afternoon. The restrooms were kept to a very clean standard. The food we ordered, which included the specialty roast duck, was satisfying in both taste and satiety. The roast duck is presented beautifully on a plate which itself resembles a duck, a fun design choice. I would recommend this restaurant if youre looking for an upscale restaurant that serves good food.
Have to agree with a lot of whats been said. Been coming here for a few years, even before they got their liquor license. Their food has steadily improved and its been excellent recently. I usually come here as a big group of out town guests like Japanese doctors or Chinese investors. The Peking Duck is clean and of course rich with taste. Its the tastiest duck in the San Gabriel valley and a great venue to host groups.Just came here for lunch accidentally, as I didnt know they were open Sunday. Brought my parents who ordered the wok lobster and Kung Pao shrimp. Of course theyre picking about authentic taste and this place passed.
Popular Chinese chain that just started expanding to the US. Authentic Chinese food - specializing in spicy dishes. Their signature dish is the duck, which a couple chefs prepare in the middle of the dining room. Prices can be a little on the high end.Overall, good service and good food. Suggested to make reservations ahead of time since this place can get busy at times.
This is the worst Chinese restaurant in Los Angeles area, not only for the outrageous price, but also the poor quality of foods. We have been eating out a lot, especially Chinese food. The foods taste so so, but the prices are unreasonable. A plate of bean sprouts costs $16, and very small amount. A plate of fish costs almost $60, which you can have for less than $30 in another fine Chinese restaurants. The restaurant is located in a shopping mall where the rent is definitely higher. But even with the high maintenance costs, this place is just not worth it. Avoid it if you can.
We enjoy eating out. Yesterday we went to this excellent restaurant which friends told us about. We spent a beautiful evening there with fine cooking and an experienced stuff and an impressive chef. We put this venue in our list and we will surely go again soon. We highly recommend.
Better off in the mall food court.Beautiful restaurant. Waiters are great. Wait time for food was awful. Received 4 eggrolls after 45mins. Waiters had no communication with each other. Had a table full of water cups. Other food came out after an hr after eggrolls. Food wasnt hot. It was flavorful. Portion size is for 2 ppl. I wouldnt recommend this location. 12 waiters 3 tables to bus. No thank you. Needs more cooks.
The place is good. Great food, high end and authentic. Unfortunately, the area is sprawling with good and authentic Chinese food. Id recommend coming here for a special occasion, but if you are going to have a casual get together then check around for all the other options that are available.
The food was excellent. Unfortunately, of the items we ordered, only half of them arrived. We followed up with the waiter repeatedly and even then we didnt get them all. They give you a print out of your order and strike off items as they arrive so there is clearly a problem in the kitchen in fulfillment! Pity.
Very uncomfortable environment. They wanted us to rush our bill and food. They would circle us and keep checking our check if we put the something there. The food was decent not amazing or great. We tried our best to enjoy it but it was not worth for the price of the food and the amount.
The place is well decorated with TV. everything very expensive, quality cannot compare to other Cantonese restaurants that we go to in that area. Generally speaking, all dishes/portion are small, we tried three different kinds of noodle, all very small; water boil fish was good, big pot but not much fish in there, whole duck was 68$ , not much to eat; 8 scallops for 22$, will not repeat for sure
Horrible service! Our waiter was very rude. Just came up amd said drinks? After getting our drinks we tried asking questions about the menu and he gave very short unhelpful responses. He didnt check on us at all and we had our taable cleared for a good 10 minutes before he brought us the check. Our waiter was a tall guy with a beard and man bun. Never even told us his name. The food wasnt bad, but we ordered a shrimp dish that was under entres and it literally was a flavorless plate of shrimp with 2 peices of brocoli. It was not something youd want to eat alone. And we couldnt ask for soy sauce since the waiter wouldnt come by.Oh and we were sat where all dishes were being bussed right behind us near the restrooms, and my boyfriend got to see all plates being dumped and flys all around it. And all the employees were talking inappropriatly and cussing while they walked by. Worst meal ever!
Poor Service! The waiters and waitress were not properly trained. It was a regular work week day and the restaurant was not busy. The waiters and waitress were standing and walking around not attending to their customers.Chop sticks and plates were missing.Water and food orders were forgotten. The food was so so, but not memorable and worth coming back for.The food was serving slow. There was no wifi to get online while waiting for the food. The other restaurants around have wifi connection but this one.To my opinion, the only reason they have business because they are located in the Westfield Shopping Center (shopping mall).
BAD SERVICE!!! don’t come unless you want to be YELLED at by the waitresses!!!!! i asked politely about my order because it was delayed and the woman SCREAMED at me to come and pick it up myself (i’m the CUSTOMER, not the delivery guy!!!!) and then kept screaming and HUNG UP on me!!!

2022-01-05We ordered roast duck(half) and squirrel fish. Id say its quite authentic Chinese taste!!! Service is nice as well. 1 star deducted because we tried to order scallop with garlic and bean vermicelli at the first however they didnt serve it today although its the recommended dish.

2022-06-08This place is beautifully decorated. The service is excellent. However, it is pricey. The duck sliders which were the equivalent of Peking Duck, were very good albeit the duck skin was not crispy. The Kung Pao chicken was superb although inundated in peanuts. The sauce was delicious. The rice with shrimp was light and fluffy and not saturated with soy sauce as is all too common in so many other eateries. The sweet and sour pork was lack luster though the meat itself was extremely well prepared and grizzle free. However, the sauce tasted heavily like tomatoe which depressed the overall flavor of the dish. The food is good and their menu extensive. But what makes this place special are its visuals.

2021-11-25Was not impressed with the price, quality and taste of the food. I ordered 3 dishes and it was over $60 which is really expensive.#1 Dan Dan noodle was size of a small rice bowl . Lack flavor#2 bamboo shoot was tough and chewy#3 chili chicken had 50% filler with French friesFor the price they shouldn’t be so stingy on the quality and quantity of the foodI probably wouldn’t want to go again unless they make some significant changes

2021-11-20So much variety, very different textures and flavors than I’ve tried in the past. Presentation of the actual meal vs the stock photo was something to be wondered so may have changed my rating

2022-02-22We came here labor day Sunday, so it was a little busy.We ordered, pork bun, wonton soup, sautéed steak and water spinach.Overall the food was delicious and satisfying I love the taste of the wonton soup very simple and clean, although I expected there portions to be bigger, since its the usual for most of sit down Chinese restaurants, my soup was in a small cup and that cost 7.99 I believe...this place is a lil pricey, but nevertheless we enjoyed the food. The pork bun was sooo soft and flavorful too.I took off one star because the water spinach took so long we had to cancel the order... and we waited a long time to get my husbands sautéed steak too....This place is known for their duck, I would like to try that next time...

2022-01-16Had the pork hook/shank it was very flavorful, the oxtail soup was more like a bouillon which was unexpected but well executed, definitely will be back for the duck.

2022-07-11One of our go to restaurants! I highly recommend the roast duck, very flavorful and overall a great experience to eat. You can wrap them in the pancakes with cucumber and sauce, and it is delicious. The soups are really great as well. The restaurant itself is gorgeous and very aesthetically pleasing, the service is wonderful as well. It is a bit pricey, but definitely worth it. Highly recommend this restaurant!
