We had 3 special nights up in the canyon, guided, packed, advised and cared for by the fantastic and experienced staff. These pros know their stuff, love their animals and their trade, and are a first class operation. I would advise anybody to use them. Regarding some previous whiny posts that unfortunately show here, Id also suggest anybody follow the reasonable, simple directions provided by the owner(s) and staff (especially at the Pack Station where theyre in charge and responsible for the safety of animals and guests) to best experience the phenomenal place that is McGee Creek. It is full of remarkable creatures (4 and 2 legged) that call it home -- and breathtaking beauty.
I really enjoyed my guided horseback ride into the mountains. I ended up having to go by myself, but the two gals who rode with me were really knowledgeable about the area, and they were also really helpful and patient with me because I hadnt had much experience riding. The views were amazing! I was really surprised about how much more foliage/trees there is up there and how green it was. It seemed like a world away from the brown rocky mountains near the main highway.
Trail Bullies! Unsafe! I came across a group on horses from McGee Creek Pack Station on the trail. My group of hikers, which consisted of a couple older folks, like me, and some young children, where in the process of crossing a stream when the group on horseback approached us on the trail. We were told by the pack station employee to get out of the way immediately, or the horses might get spooked. We did our best, but we were a large group balancing on wet slippery rocks crossing the stream so there was only so much we could do quickly. They impatiently insisted we move right away or the horses would get spooked. In moving quickly to let them through, we put ourselves in danger. We put ourselves on slippery wet rocks with a steep drop on one side, so they could move through. We were holding some of the kids up to keep them from falling over the edge...all so the horses wouldnt get spooked? We then got a lecture from the guide in back about our poor trail etiquette?!?! We did everything we could to move as fast as we could and got a lecture? If these horses cannot stop on the trail for 30 seconds so small children can get out of the way, they are not safe horses! Furthermore, we come across this group in the John Muir Wilderness of the Inyo National Forrest. This is a public trail! They acted like we were trespassing on their trail. It is a trail for the people! Not only did we have to walk for hours through the manure from these horses, but we had to put ourselves in jeopardy, so they can make money off of a public trail. Poor form! A complaint with the forest service will be filed.
Did 2 full day rides in the first half of September. The guides were professional, skilled and great company (especially Lynn and Nina). The horses and mules are super well cared for and the gear is all good quality. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending this Pack Station to anyone looking to explore McGee creek and surrounding back country.
We arrived on time ( 30 min before the ride).we filled the paperwork and picked up some water from our car. upon coming back the owner was very disrespectful to us and started yelling at us that we were late...telling us that we can only do the one hour ride. Apparently they overbooked and could not accommodate us in the 2 hour trip. Instead of apologizing for overbooking the owner blamed us for being late. Its very unfortunate that they overbook their trips and then cancell on customers at the site. There are so many great experiences we had with other companies. Please dont risk your valuable time with this operator, she does not deserve to stay in business.Reply to owner:Its amazing to me to see the owner distort the truth so bluntly.1.Both of my boys are 10 YEARS old, im really sorry they didnt pass the owners expected height. No one has approached us or told us anything about their concern - obviously the owner is not telling the truth. If that was the issue for not letting us ride the owner should of asked for proof of age - i would of happily supplied that.2. We arrived sharp at 1 pm, completed the paperwork and were ready for our adventure..There were about 15 other people who were completing their paperwork ( not 7 ).it was obvious that this trip was overbooked and the owner was stressing over that and tried to find a solution - incompetent business practices.3 . The fact that you mentioned that we spoke another language illustrates your Xenophobia. Its very sad that with all thats going on around us you are still demonstrating hatred for people who speak another language. Me and my family felt discriminared by you because we were speaking another language between us.Im planning to file a complaint with the better business bureau and make sure that this kind of hatred incidents dont repeat.
Excellent staff and stock! Have been to other places and stock is not nearly as nice. Gear is kept in good working order and looks nice. Have been to other equestrian places ( not in the mts) where the gear looked like it came from a thrift store, just a mish mash.Guides are very knowlegable, safe, and courteous. They also have a great knowledge of the local flora/fauna, which is soo nice to understand what your seeing as well as just keeps time flowing.Excellent, excellent fascillity. Highly recommend it to everyone. It is always on my list of places to come when I am in the Mammoth area.
We had an amazing experience at McGee Creek Pack Station from the very beginning. Booking over the phone was easy and I received an email confirmation right away. When we arrived we were greeted by smiling, happy staff. We were given helmets, saddle bags and advised to put on some of their sunscreen and bug spray! They have a great safety demo and riding demo before we got on our horses. We had Tex, Joe and Buddy. They were great beginner horses and we felt safe the whole time! Our guide was so knowledgeable and chatty which was great! She checked on us throughout the ride to make sure we were all okay. I would recommend any ride from McGee Creek and I will be returning for another ride 😊

2021-09-28We had an amazing experience! My two girls, age 8 and 10, and I went on the one hour ride, and it was perfect for them. Just long enough for their age without becoming tiresome. But we got to see plenty of gorgeous scenery in that amount of time! The mountains, the fall colors starting to show, and the sound of the creek bubbling right next to us, it was all just stunning. Our guide, Carissa, did an excellent job, she was so informative and fun to chat with on the ride, and the horses were pros. Our 3 year old stayed behind and was able to do a leaded walk on a horse with another guide, Gabby, and she loved it. It’s really the perfect family excursion for all ages! Such a great memory. We highly recommend!

2022-06-13Wonderful experience for our family. Morgan was especially fantastic and engaging with our daughter on her first trail ride. The 2 hr ride itself lands you knee deep in Gods Country. If you fancy a different way to experience this part of the Eastern Sierras, MCPS is a worthy endeavor.

2021-08-07Most of the 1star reviews are outrageously unfounded and sound utterly ridiculous. I appreciate the owners responses yet saddened they have to take so much of their personal time breaking down their customers idiocy. My 1st ride with McGee Pack Station on July 22, 2021 was incredible! Our guide Sarah was excellent. I was riding the rear and didn’t get a chance to talk to her much but I learned a lot about our surroundings listening to her.It was a 4 hour ride to beautiful Beaver Creek with just 3 riders plus Sarah. The weather could have not been more perfect and I throughly enjoyed my 40 minutes at Beaver Creek all alone. My mule Petunia was awesome! My 1st ride on a mule and it was a comfort being on her in that rocky portion leading up to the creek. Can’t believe any adult would foolishly complain their child was put a mule (as per one of the 1star ridiculous complaints.) I’m an experienced rider and was thrilled to be on a sure-footed mule.I will return to McGee Creek Pack Station next year for another epic ride. Thank you to the owner, wranglers and our awesome guide for a ride I’ll never forget! Lizzie

2019-11-12I have been on several rides with McGee Creek Pack Station. Every time I go out, I am impressed by how much emphasis the guides and wranglers put on safety. Before the ride starts, the wranglers give a speech that goes over basic riding instructions and safety. Out on the trail, the wranglers always talk to hikers and trail runners, especially if they have dogs or small kids. Theyre always super friendly and instructive to hikers on how to get off the trail, both for hikers and horses safety. The wranglers also know so much about McGee Canyon history! And the horses and mules always seem well fed and happy. As someone with horse experience, I appreciate how well cared for these animals are. And I love how they have so many good mules too! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants a fun activity in the summer!
