Water is extremely low, so there is no place to swim unless youre in a boat. Showers and restrooms are closed, only porta potties. There are RV driveways but you must be able to be fully offgrid (just fyi). When we got here, squatters were in our reserved spot. Barely any staff running this place. Will not return. Only plus was we got here after 9pm and were able to get in, since theres no gate
Completed a 2.5 mile hike that went in a circle around the recreation area. The hike is ranked moderate difficulty with some hilliness. Very scenic with multiple views of the lake and surrounding hills. FYI, there are no tables or or benches along the hike. There is a fairly large parking lot where the trail begins.
This is a nice and generally quiet place with beautiful lookouts areas, views and camping/day use areas. It was our first time to New Melones and we will be back Im sure. We were blessed to be able to enjoy the water, some fishing and also getting to enjoy the wildlife. We got to see at least a dozen deer near the water and even three fawns as well.
This review is based purely on the swim beach as I dont have a boat and didnt explore any other part of the lake. We went up on a hot day in July thinking there would be a nice beach to relax on and get in the water to cool off, Ive encountered plenty of those at lake before after all. Not this place, its basically a shoreline where boats cant get close to. No sand. Dirt, weedy swim area. Not at all what I was expecting, so if you come to swim, dont.
Nice campground just off of Highway 49. Most of the campsites have trees and some shade. It can be really, really hot here during the day in the height of summer. In the fall and spring it is a delightful place to be though. The Oaks are full of awesome woodpeckers and other birds. Lots of the campsites have great views of the lake too. There is an area for swimming, trails for hiking and mountain biking, and houseboats for rent too.
Hellish trek down to the water for swimming. Good bathrooms with 25 cent showers. Nice camping spots some with shade. You have to walk thru others campsites to reach yours....some people keep their music on too long. Car window broken in broad daylight....Close drive to marina. So so hot in the summer, water is very refreshing, clean and warm.
Spot number 18 is full of flying bugs but the area is nice and spot number 62 has a great view with only clover mites covering the bench area. The wild turkey and deer were a welcomed surprise. The huge turkey vultures gathered in numbers to grace us with their aerial acrobats. Loved it.
The lake is lovely this time of year, the water is so warm but still refreshing. There is no sand, only dirt and rocks so bring chairs and swim shoes. We put up a canopy and had beers and leftover bbq from camping the night before, plenty of room for a family of 8. There are no buoys separating the swimming area from the boating area so you do need to be careful. I also would not recommend camping at this lake as there are no waterfront camping spots.
Water is really low lots of trees coming up out of the water. Putting your boat in at Tuttle town seems some people are always rude impatient and in a hurry. If you come to the area please take your trash with you or put it in a trash can not on the sides of our country roads. Animals could eat it and choke to death and die among other things.
It was great, had showers and flushing toilets, a few of the sites were on a hill but not a big deal, it was dead empty when we went on a Wednesday so had the place to ourselves. It has a place to swim but its not too awesome, coming from someone that lives in Canada though. All in all it was great
It was very hot when we went and the landscape provided little shade. There is a large amount of bugs in the sites. Also, without a boat there is not much monumental to do. The biggest disappointment was the closure of the advertised bathrooms and showers. The good news seems to be that that it is easily available to make reservations.
Peak drought summer 2015 — Stanislaus River makes a comeback. Water level 820ft MSL or -220 ft from full which it has been for a while now! Still fascinating to see whats left at the bottom of these things— nothing, but for some well-preserved dead trees! Whatever, I dont do fresh water anyway, still great place to camp. Believe me you wouldnt have been able to get a boat in there, its all mud and flies long before you reach the water, tread carefully or you might not come back out...
Went in May 2015, lake level was low and not appropriate for swimming (really muddy). Great hikes around, specifically Peoria Wilderness area about an hour away. You could also visit Mark Twains memorial cabin. Of course, the boat rental people were nice and organized. You could kayak or rent a motor boat there. The facility was very clean. Not a lot of shade on campsites. The view of the lake from the campsites was really good but you could not get to the water from the campsites. Osprey watching is a plus.
Came here recently to camp and fish with friends, Feb. 2016. The restrooms are very clean and flush well. There is great cell phone service as if I was in the city. camp sites are clean. if you arrive after 9 you will not be let in so come before if you want to camp. overall very pleasant experience
This place is good for certain water sports (power boats, jets, water ski, fishing, etc.) but not for swimming - I was trying to find a spot to cool off and jump in the water - but I wouldnt recommend that in your wildest dreams - the currents are way too strong, its always windy and there are is no beach access, its very steep coming down to the water just to realize its muddy and all the above.
Really clean, lots of wildlife, good fishing, nice swimming, great trails. Also: showers, close to a grocery store, urgent care, a cute downtown, good food, and a wonderful, welcoming Catholic Church. Perfect for enjoying the heck out of the outdoors when youre not into roughing it. :)Bring quarters for the showers.
Went here with a few buddies of mine. It took awhile for everyone to get there. But sure enough one by one they all came. Permanent bathrooms would make things in the park a little bit easier. Lots of wood around so its a pretty fun time. Beware of bears because theyll sneak up on ya.
An easy fit, naturally stimulating. The private location is ideal. Good place to drop your anchor. I came here once, & will probably come again, it was ballin. The fish here literally swallow your bait whole! If youre here by yourself, definitely milk it for all its worth. Occasional stiff winds, but you can still pitch a tent. You can bring a group, but dont try to stretch it beyond capacity.
Clean sites, running water, fire pits, tables, showers, great scene/wildlife viewing- turkeys, deer, variety of small birds including larger ones like hawks, blue heron, Canadian geese and owls. Store/gas station at entrance, be sure you have money if youre not a senior...$22 per night is pretty expensive if you ask me but for what you get I suppose its ok ;)
I say its okay+ to much policing ,to many people coming by to see what youre doing, which is good also for security and making sure it stays quiet at night, boating is great but very little Shoreline, access its not for Grandma and Grandpa unless theyre sturdy, never too crowded good supply of hardware and food at the hole

2022-04-10This is a very family friendly camping area and lake. There are some good beginner to intermediate bike trails there and of course access to a large lake although the water is still low right now. My only issue is they didnt have the bathrooms open in my camping area which required a long hike or a car ride to get to the other area to take a shower and use the restrooms. Still a good place to go.

2022-06-26What a beautiful place to have a good time with nature! We suddenly decided to camp and visited this place looking for campsites. To our surprise many sites were available. We wandered around to find the best one and finally tented on site 89 (88 was also good but it was taken). This campsite (80-89) are walk-ins so you have to carry your stuff from car and walk for at least 200m.Also, it is quite downhill so be careful with kids. Once you landed at the site there is no going back. You just dont want to leave the place. Thats how beautiful it is.Campsite has flush toilets, shower and taps for cleaning and drinking.

2022-06-15Nice lake. All manmade. Some camp sites are more covered than others.Park rangers seem attentive enough and addressed issues that arose.Lots of garbage left behind; seems the average visitor isnt as concerned with cleaning up. Lots of beer caps and cigarette butts and food wrappers.

2022-06-29Unexpectedly gorgeous. Youre only about 10 min out from local wineries. The view of the lake is spectacular (despite the drought). You can pull the water toys right up; we saw quite a few staying on boats. Really feels private. Our family loved staying here.Make sure you are prepped for RV camping though. Showers were closed and theres a significant amount of dirth as usual when you camp. Also, w had a tent outside, but a random thunderstorm hit in the middle of the night. Also, possible snakes in the hotter weather...

2022-02-18Summer is usually pretty hot but just enough trees for shade and the water is incredibly comfortable. Plenty of fishing going on here even though I go here with my boys to swim in the summertime and bike ride in the summertime spring and fall. I hear the fishing is pretty good. Campgrounds are nice and clean and so are the restroom and shower facilities. Always a different boat launch opening or closing due to water levels rising or falling. Mostly falling due to the drought but snow melt run off has started to get it to come back up again. Lots of wildlife. Okay enough about the people. Lol. Actually a much more quiet crowd than some other lakes that are known for their off the hook partying. This isnt one of them its much more toned down and respectable. We Have seen plenty of deer raccoons foxes coyotes gopher snakes king snakes garter snakes racer snakes and rattlesnakes of course. Leave the rattlesnakes alone and theyll usually leave you alone and look for a way out to stay away from you. If you come in September and October in the late afternoon and evenings you might get lucky enough to see male tarantulas looking for females. Unless provoked the males are very docile and theyll usually just walk right over your hand as if youre not even there. Theyve got other things on their minds .Its cool to see bald eagles and ospreys in the skies as well

2021-07-23100+ for the three days that I went, but I spent alot of my time in the water which was low but very warm! Night time stayed hot but the winds blew in which was nice.Camp spots were decently spaced out from eachother. But most of them were on his and slopes so flat areas were very limited in my area.I saw tons of wildlife from deer, birds, lizards and even a tarantula.A grocery store with a deli is only 20 min away so you so if you forgot anything or need more ice its a quick trip there and back which was a major plus. I would come back, but maybe on a cooler weekend.

2022-04-07Great site options, cute little trail at the campground, the rec area isnt far at all, most of the roads lead to a close by gas station for any last minute needs, and the sites are very well maintained as well as the bathrooms. A very chill and easy camping spot. The camp host even let us move sites!

2020-03-07Very nice CG. I was there in late Feb 2020, and it was nice and quiet, and less than half full even though the only CG open was Iron Horse. Big Oak looks very nice also. I use an inflatable kayak, and my only minor issue was the distance of the campsites from the waters edge, and it didnt seem as if the lake was all that low - but its still worth visiting. Im pretty sure all sites are dry. The camp host at the time, Wendy, was very nice and helpful. There are great trails to hike and mtb, esp for the beginning biker. Very scenic. The fishing was slow, but still, theres nothing better than to be near a serene lake. The only noise pollution was geese honking 24/7!
