Wife and I have been taking the drive up to Alpine to eat at Freds for years now. Sadly since theyve reopened under new(er) management recently the staff seems.. a bit rough around the edges and menu less diverse. Also twice now Ive called before taking the 45 minute drive up the hill and was told the dining room would be open only to get up there to find it locked with a sign that says drive thru only. Doubt we will be eating here in the future.
Im now pescatarian, but once upon a time I loved the burgers at Freds. However, I have a deep adoration for their chocolate-peanut butter shakes. The shakes are made with actual peanut butter. They are thick and delicious. If you havent had one, and you enjoy chocolate and peanut butter, I highly recommend them.
Hello I went there for the first time, 10/5/2021 around 2:00pm with my mother luckily she got a chicken sandwich, she said it was hard? but I asked for a cheeseburger well-done and it was RAW and I got food poisoning and it was horrible Im glad my mom didnt get a burger too but Im going to talk to the owner and tell him that these people need to cook the hamburger really good if its pink dont eat it take it back up and talk to them cuz its not worth getting food poisoning I had to call the doctor and and this is not a good time to be going to the hospital so if you want your meat well done make sure its well done so they have to change that so they wont get other people sick Im glad my my 83 year-old mother didnt get sick.
FREDS IS A QUALITY BURGER RESTAURANT NOT A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT I REPEAT FREDS IS A QUALITY BURGER RESTAURANT NOT A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT IF U HAVE SOMEWHERE TO GO DONT GO AT ALL!!All I see is complaints about the drive thru and the wait but as a real customer I understand there is gonna be a wait for good quality burgers. If u dont like it McDonalds is just down the street :). Ive missed freds a lot before they closed down. Really good burgers! Keep it up!
Been a customer of Freds for years. A few years ago, Freds got new owners who did alright with the food, but they let the place get rundown. Most recently, supposed old original owners bought the place back. They closed it down and theyve been cleaning up the joint for quite a few months until just a few days ago when they finally newly reopened. I, along with a lot of other people whove been loyal customers I suspect, had been waiting for the reopening with the Freds Old Fashioned Burgers original owners running the show again. I chose the drive-thru for the first visit, and what a mistake that was. It took 45 minutes to get my food - a simple Half Pounder Burger no cheese and French Fries (no more small or large fries, just bag of fries now). There were just six cars in front of me, but one of them took about 15 minutes and another 20 minutes. The temptation to leave the line and just split after I ordered was very strong after waiting the first 30 minutes, but I didnt want to do that to them, so I stayed, paid, finally got my food, and went home. The Burger was 8 bucks, the bag of fries was 5 bucks. The two girls at the window assured me my food was freshly made to order just before they handed it to me when I eventually got to the window and that it hadnt been sitting around. They totally lied to me. I live only a couple of minutes down the road from Freds, and when I finally got home to eat - about 10 minutes time total - the bag of fries was paltry and small, room temperature, and soggy. The burger was room temperature as well. And, let me tell you brother, no way that half pounder started out as a half pound of pre-cooked meat. No way the two patties were a quarter pound each at the start. The meat patties were two not very big thin meat discs, cooked and/or sitting on the fryer to the point that there was no juices left in them whatsoever. So dry, I had to sip my water after every bite. The bread bun was good, but the lettuce was one tiny piece of soggy lettuce, and I mean tiny, one little slice of tomato sliced so thin you could see daylight thru it, and one little slice of onion that was smaller in circumference than the slice of tomato. The pitiful dollop of condiments was likely added with a baby spoon..... I dunno. All in all this was an incredibly disappointing experience. The exact opposite of what Freds was even when the other owners had it, and not even remotely close to what I was hoping for. The prices are up, the food quantity and quality is way down, and it took for-freaking-ever to get through that drive-thru, and seven cars is not even close to unmanageable, or, at least it shouldnt be. I might go back in a few months and see if anythings improved. Well see.
Im all for supporting local restaurants, but adding 50¢ per patty on your bugers is a solid nope. Youre food is overpriced as is and youre not selling any special pandemic patties on your burgers now so its time to realize everyone is struggling and knock those prices back down to what people can afford.
Amazing place to stop for a great tasting burger. The malts are very tasty. I got my food quick, it was hot and everything tasted great. Nice atmosphere, very friendly staff, you feel welcomed. The decore is fun and inviting. The price is reasonable. Ill be going back many times.
I ordered a quarter bacon cheeseburger combo plain(no lettuce, tomato etc) and a kids junior burger. The 1/4 bacon had no bacon and discover that both burgers were not cooked all the way through after my 6 year old had already ate half of his burger. tried to call to address being charged for a bacon 1/4 and not getting bacon but no one answered and driving to alpine from blossom Valley before they closed wasnt possible. First time Ive been so disappointed in my order from freds
Went in to order since car line was outrageous. Ordered food and sat and waited. Watches as the fryer guy would WIPE sweat from his bald head with a rag and tuck it into his apron and then TOUCH french frys and fryer with his hands. Then he would put his hand inside the French fry bag to open it and slide frys into bag. Now you have bodily fluids on your fry bag. Inside your fry bag. And on your fry bag. I also watched as the grill guy would put raw meat on grill ungloved and continue to touch and contaminate the area around him with raw meat on his hands. I then witness grill guy touch hamburger buns and put the into the toaster. Now you have raw meat contaminating your bun. I got home and threw away the French frys knowing there was bodily fluids on them. Proceeded to bite cheeseburger where meat was raw in the midddle and cold. I threw it away. I’m sorry but these guys need to be properly trained or Fred’s will be shut down for health reasons.
Horrible service! I was the only one in the drive thru. I ordered 7 items which they put in one bag. Bag tore and chili dog went all on my leg and burned me. Never going back! Terrible service! Also the hamburgers were soggy and the philly cheese steak was awful! I read all the great reviews and it makes me so mad that my service was so bad. SMH!!!
Cooked to order, we ordered the half lb. Burger and Frys. From grill to table food was hot and tasty, not like the fast food changes were you get your burgers cold. The shakes are thick and delicious, Freds is up there with In-N-out if get the chance go you wont be disappointed.
This is not the Freds Burgers that it once was! The staff, maybe one person taking orders gets behind if there is more than two people in line. The tables are not well keep, or stocked, Cleanliness of tables, floors, and surrounding areas are not well keep! The amount of extras, such as french fries seems to have been cut down to only 10 per order!!! The famous milk shakes and malts, the size has been cut in have! With all that said,... the prices have increased! Not a famous location any more!
Kind of a hidden away place that if you werent looking for it you would drive right by the little strip center it was in. Pretty decent food, good portions, slower service. I think because everything is cooked as you order they need a little extra time to complete your order. I would go there again.
Fred is Dead! Fred obviously sold out, no longer here! Cheap little pre- whatever burger, hot, set on top of lettuce, onion and tomato, Sad! Was the only customer in there at noon, having to listen to a very loud conversation of the two couples, cook and cashier included, talking very loud in a language I am evidently too ignorant to identify, no wonder we resort to faster food, Doh!
Freds is a classic burger place, how cant love a classic burger place, when you go there you have to get their shakes they are the best thing Ive put in my mouth, their fries are old school, anything you get here you will love, they have had the same menu for years, original

2022-02-08Almost missed it because there isnt much of a sign. Like most hole in the wall type places, they dont need a sign because all the locals already know its there. This is basically your last chance to get a decent burger on this side of civilization, so I recommend you stop in and get some grub for the road here at Freds

2021-09-19Best burger place Ive ever been to. This place tastes a lot better than in n out or smashburgers. This is technically the proper way to eat a burger. Everything on the bottom and the patties on top. Youll notice the difference in taste between other burger joints just with placements.

2022-02-16Over a week ago we went to Freds Old Fashioned Burger. I had a quarter pound Burger with bacon and my husband had the same but larger one. Came with delicious fries and a drink. It was great and very quick. Service is always friendly.

2022-06-22Enjoyed a freshly made kiddy burger combo with fresh lettuce, tomato and onion for under six bucks! (The adult combos were way too big for me!) The freshly made vanilla, chocolate or strawberry shakes were out of this world! The fifties and sixties memorabilia and tunes playing made the experience very memorable. It felt like I went back on time!

2022-06-25I got the cheapest basic cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato. It was $5.79. Tastes like a homemade burger!!! Not fancy but fresh ingredients, thick flavorful patty! My son saidthe corndog was the best he has ever had

2022-05-13Food was good. I would recommend easy on sauces. Go light on grilled onions and sauces on burgers. Burgers are good and dont need a lot of help

2022-06-02Way too expensive. But actually the shrimp was good. More than $3 for a fountain drink and the fries were gross.
