I lived there for two years from 2018-2020 and would NOT recommended to anyone I know. I would like to give it a one star only for its walking distance to the campus. The missing four stars are because: High rent with 1) Only one outdated air condition in the living room which does not work well in the summer. It is extremely hot in summer in Riverside 2) Only one parking space for 2b2b apartment. 3) Insecurity: They never kept the gate locked so everyone can come into the property. I have seen the homeless people coming into the apartment several times. 4) Poor service. The manager is often not in the office and I tried to call their emergency number, it was not answered after I waited for 2 min.
All the staff are so sweet, they take care of any issue right away and they had me moved in the first couple days! The apartment is completely worth it, it was everything I was looking for. Very nice interior, Ive lived here almost 2 months and I still have no complaints about it. They genuinely care about their renters. Id recommend to my friends if you are looking for a home then rent here! The area is perfect as well. The rooms are also very large and the bathrooms were nice too! Love dwell apartments!!
I have lived at Dwell (Formerly University Hills) for more than 15 years, and have seen 5 major changes in management. The current management is the best by far. The common areas are in the best condition i have seen.We have recently had a change in ownership which resulted in a 30% increase in our rent this past year. That was certainly a hardship, but they have completely remodeled and updated the property. If you have any association with UCR you cannot ask for a better location. It is one block off campus, and on the safe side of campus. The manager we now have, Peter, is consistently friendly, helpful, and responsive and has excellent listening skills--truly professional. He is also an exceptionally clear and careful writer which is crucial because so much communication between management and tenants is written. He is dressed impeccably without fail. We recently had technical problems with the package lockers. Despite it being an onerous task, Peter saw to it that all the packages were removed from the lockers and that every recipient was notified to come to the office to get their package.I point these things out because the first three management teams we had could best be describes as shady. They were running scams of one sort or another, and then after they left we would find out that they had embezzled funds. Our first manager absconded with the pet deposits! I also had problems with rent being withdrawn twice a month which can cause some havoc with personal finances.I dont have any fear of that with the new ownership. The transitional manager, Melanie, was also very professional and did a great job transforming the property. They seem very concerned with keeping things above board, ethical, and running smoothly. Their website is a bit clunky, but it provides a very convenient way to check up on any notices I may have missed, to pay rent or fees, or request maintenance. The company makes effective use of technology with helpful emails. Peter answers emails very promptly. Melanie was great with this as well. The apartments are very large for the price thanks to the age of the buildings which I really dont care about. They were built in a time before apartments became the size of prison cells. And they are pet friendly. Highly recommended.
Overall, I would say it is an OK apartment. No bugs so far, which was the reason I moved out from the previous apartment.I took four stars away because of Valerie, one of the management team member, whom you are usually dealing with. She rejects to offer any help and is hard to communicate with. A bad management can ruin an apartment!!! (Melanie, the manager is very nice and helpful though.)Today I got an email half an hour before they closed the office saying they re-assigned the parking spot and everyone has to park on their new spot, otherwise the car could be towed. I immediately called the office and explained to Valerie that I have been out of town and would not be able to move my car tonight. (They posted the written notice to the door after I left town). Then I asked if we could get in touch with the other tenant (who got reassigned to the spot where my car is parking on) and work something out together. She rejected it because it was too complicated, and she must go and cannot work unpaid for any extra time, despite that there was still half an hour before the office closed! She also turned me down to get in touch with the manager, because it is not an apartment urgent issue. Yes, it is not an urgent issue for her because she does not need to pay anything if my car got towed. The bottom line is if I were notified earlier – rather than an email half an hour before the office closed, I could have sent my friend to enter my apartment with the backup-key from the office and get my car’s key. At least she should show that she is willing to help. In contrast, she just kept repeating that there was nothing she could do and I would have to wait till tomorrow morning to call the manager. Now I have no option but to risk my car being towed tonight...To be continued…
Update on 08/21/2018We have moved out for more than 4 months, and paid fully with money orders. But they didnt put the money order in there system, so I still have a balance due. Im getting harassing phone calls from a debit collecting company using different phone numbers everyday. And also they have a collection account set for us. Which takes them forever to correct.Original post:This place used to be nice but now they are understaffed. There were two ladies who worked there but now there is only one. So do expect a lot when you call the office, nobody answers, and the leasing office is mostly closed during the office hours. When we moved out after paying for the last months rent, we still got a bill saying we didnt pay for it. And when we tried to reach out to them and have them correct the bill, they barely answer the phone, and definitely do nothing. So now I get harassing phone calls everyday from debt collecting company due to their fault. Well done dwell.
Good walking distance to campus (~15 minutes to north side, technically less than 5 minutes to reach the campus, but thats where it officially counts as campus, at which point its just a student resident hall), spacious units, water is included (but not sewer), grocery store (slightly expensive because its organic foods) and Starbucks nearby, generally nice apartment.. No red flags raised or anything, but some issues made me decide not to renew my lease. (Brace yourselves for a long review)1. The rent is too expensive - if you have a choice, just rent somewhere further from campus to lower rent significantly.2. No central heat or A/C - I know some people prefer this because they dont need to heat up/cool down the entire apartment every time they adjust the temperature, but there is only one A/C unit in the living room for the entire apartment. I havent been able to sleep in my bedroom all summer because its too damn hot. Ive heard people use portable A/Cs, but I wasnt wiling to pay even more money for electricity.3. This was my first year living here, so Im not sure if the previous management (back when it was called University Hills Apartment) also did a lot of inspections before the new academic year started, but every time they come in for inspection (on the A/C, checking the breakers etc), something in my apartment gets altered. Toilet seat left up (Im a female, so I know that wouldnt be me), A/C temperature lowered to 70 (I always keep it at no lower than 78), little things moved around.. I can let go of the stuff moved around because I know they need the space to do their inspections, but the toilet seat and the A/C thing Im not so sure. (like whos going to be pay for the electricity/sewer they used while they were in my apartment? I didnt agree to those.) And Im usually not even home when they come in, so who knows what exactly they do while theyre in here? I dont mean to sound so cynical and judgmental, but its happened a few times that I feel a little uncomfortable every time I see a notice saying theyd be coming around for inspections.4. Also, maybe since the building is so old, I could never get cold, not even close to cool, water all summer. Sometimes even steam would come off of the water when I just have the cold faucet turned on. So if you expect to jump in the shower to cool off after walking home from work, be prepared to be disappointed..It was overall an okay experience living here, but due to the transition to new management (transition periods are always annoying - not their fault), and the reasons I gave above, I dont think Ill be living here again. Honestly, unless youre getting a second roommate to share that 1-bedroom unit, or dont mind paying >$1000/mo for rent, (itll be closer to $1200 after paying for utilities) I wouldnt recommend it.
I lived in University Hills Apartments for over a decade, roughly from 2000 to 2012. I had no problems with management; and on the rare occasions when I had problems with the apartment, they quickly and cheerfully took care of it. If business considerations had not lead me to move last year, I would still be living there. The complex contains two workout rooms, one for cardio machines and the other for weights. There are other recreation rooms, and multiple swimming pools (one per building). The apartments and general atmosphere seems geared to the university students from the nearby University of California at Riverside. I do not mean that in the sense of a party atmosphere; it is more study and family oriented. They will knock on your door and tell you to keep it down after 10 PM. Likewise, you need to inform other residents in advance when you plan to have a large gathering; such as throwing a birthday or graduation party using a pool area or recreation room. This notification is typically done by printing up notices and taping them to the other residents doors. The apartment complex was not in a bad area, but there was occasional crime. In fact, I think they turned it into a gated community due to some of the cars in the complex parking lot being broken into. Now you need swipe cards to get your car into the parking lot, and after regular hours you need to enter codes to get past the main doors into the complex. So they do take problems such as crime seriously. As you can tell by my rating, I liked it there. I liked the management and the other tenants. So my final recommendation is that if you are going to be a problem or jerk to either the management or the other tenants, then go somewhere else.
Love Cockroaches? Enjoy stolen bikes? Broken into cars? A new manager every 3 months?Well come on down to Dwell!Live here for a year and spend half of it with Dewey visiting you bi-weekly without resolving jack!Get to know your new roommates: Cockroaches. Theyll come out of your bathroom sink, your shower clog, your sockets, your oven, your fridge, they make sure you dont forget their presence! Dwell isnt shy about it either, moving you to a different apartment because the one you were supposed to take has a Cockroach infestation.Dont like the managers response to this problem? Dont worry, therell be a new one next month! Ive lived here for a year and meet 5 different ones and 3 different receptionists!Of course, when theyre actually available. Their hours are 9am-6:00pm, but not really! More like a few random sparse hours in between that range! But hey, maybe bugs and rotating lease staff isnt a problem, as long as your stuff is secure.Nope! My bike got stolen, my neighbors car broken into (they park INSIDE the complex!), and stolen TVs from the apartments own rec room!Lets say none of these are bad enough, well I hope you enjoy no extra parking spots (have fun moving your car off the street twice a month), almost never locked front gate or garage gates, paying one dollar per laundry wash and another per dry (quarters only folks!), stolen packages, terrible heaters and AC, and paper thin walls (hope you like hearing everything your neighbors do).Look, youre worth more than this terrible apartment complex.I hope this place is bought out by anyone else so that it has a chance to be better.Good luck on your searches!!
I lived here for 2 years (from 2015-2017), During the time that they were University Hills Apartments and then Dwell. I moved out in August 2017, so some of these things may have changed.Overall, the apartments were livable, but I definitely wouldnt move back, or recommend them. The main pro of this apartment is that it is close to the UCR campus. It is about a 15 minute walk from the HUB. Granted, this walk is down a very sunny road (read: you will be sweaty during the 9 months when the temp is >80) that is not safe at night.Another pro: theyre renovating the apartments to have nice fridges and faux-wood flooring. So theyre stylish on the inside. With that said, there were a lot of REALLY annoying things about this apartment. First, they have increased the rent immensely. Currently, rooms are between $1050-$1500, without utilities. That is the price of a pretty nice apartment, which these are not. Heres why1. The building is ancient. The water often came out of the pipes brownish and with sediment in it. If you ran it for a couple of minutes, it wouldnt be visibly dirty, but... not really the type of water you want to be drinking. Also, the toilet occasionally wouldnt flush and we had constant problems with the plumbing. They would often shut off the water to fix it at random times.2. The air conditioning is a total joke. Granted, I lived on the 3rd floor in a very sunny apartment, but in a city that gets up to 114 in the summer, this is a BIG deal--especially when there are apartments with central cooling available for similar prices. The air conditioning was a single dinky window-style unit in the living room. It ate up our money, and the air did NOT reach either bedroom, so my room was often above 90 for months, which made it difficult to sleep.3. Another thing that made it difficult to sleep: the close proximity of the train. Since my windows were almost always open to let in air, I could hear the train constantly.4. A HUGE totally annoying issue about this apartment is parking. We had a 2-bedroom apartment, and we only had a single parking spot within the lot. We also werent allowed to buy another spot, or park in any of the surrounding lots (the abandoned strip mall, Goodwins, and the church were all pretty strict about stray parkers). There is also incredibly limited street parking, which meant that often we had to park pretty far away. The biggest issue with only having one parking spot was: 2x a month, there is street cleaning, and there is NO parking allowed from 7am-12pm--on BOTH sides of the street, for a 2-3 mile radius surrounding the apartment. Every other week, I had to drive my car to a different part of town park, and have someone drop me off at home.5. The area is relatively safe, when compared to places like Blaine and Iowa, but is still not safe. We got constant crime alerts about Big Springs road (ex: a woman pulled into a ditch by strange man, people held up), and my boyfriend had 3 of his hubcaps stolen out of our parking lot.6. If you are living here because you dont have a car, you will still have to take a bus or Uber to get groceries. There arent any walkable grocery stores except Goodwins, which is an organic food store. I bought an acai bowl there once (which was essentially a smoothie), and it cost me $13. It was delicious, but Goodwins is not really a place to buy groceries.7. I had a bizarre problem at this apartment receiving mail. It took my credit card company sending me my credit card 3x, and over 4 months, for me to get it. I dont know what else I didnt get, but there were countless lost pieces of mail... One time, the toll roads bill came a month and a half after the 2nd bill came with the $60 late fee. Cards didnt arrive. One plus of the mail system is that they have a pay-to-enroll locker system a lot like Amazon lockers, which made packages really easy to get (go Dwell!).Overall, if you can afford living in Dwell, you can afford a better apartment near Canyon Crest Towne Center with air conditioning and drinkable water. Ki
The manager is ALWAYS MIA!!The brief statement of my complaints is the following statement separated by --. The details is written in the 2nd part after that.--To be fair, we were very satisfied when we moved in last year because of the previous manager, Mr. Peter San Nicolass effort and assistance. Hes always there and ready to help, but things change after he left.1. The public gate remains unlocked and not repaired for 9 months in a year.2. The water heater stopped working twice in a year. One time lasts for 3 days, and the other time doesnt have notification. Dwell didnt give residents any compensation for that.3. The amenities were closed several times without notification. The reason the manager replied to me is cleaning, and this lasts for 1 week.4. WE CANT FIND THE MANAGER!!We pays rent regularly in time, and we are polite even when we have many confusions and depression due to Dwell teams inappropriate management. Now you tell me we need to pay for your absence. I dont think thats reasonable at all.--I was told that we need to pay the rent for 09/01/2018~09/07/2018 because we didnt give them a written notice before 30 days. Both my roommate and I were trying so hard to reach out the leasing office in July, but the manager wasnt there every time we tried. The office hour is 9 am - 5 pm, so I usually wait there at 9:00 - 9:30 because I work on campus from 9 to 6, but no one is in the office. This situation keeps occurring several times. The most recent one is on 08/06 morning after I came back from a business travel. I even waited until 10:15 am, but no one showed up and the office door remained locked. I did try to notify the office or the manager before 30 days, but I CANT DUE TO THE MANAGERS CONTINUOUS ABSENCE.My roommate failed too because no one was there once again. The other time, he was told by a representative that the manager took a few days off, which we didnt receive any emails regarding this as notification. The problem is the person who acted as a representative doesnt know which form we should fill out, so he/she told him to wait until the manger comes back. WE FAIL TO FILL THE FORM EARLIER AGAIN DUE TO THE OFFICE UNPROFESSIONAL MANAGEMENT.Since I cant find the manager in the office, I replied to her email immediately on 08/02 to notify her our moving out when I was in a business travel on 07/28~08/03. It will be very unfair if we need to pay the rent for 9/1~9/7 due to her absence without any notification. She never sends emails to notify the residents when she is not around, not even a note on the office door!! We cant even find someone to help us when we need it in a regular office hour!!
UCR Student giving a little review here, cheap rent - 1,000 for 2 bedrooms - split this with 3 other friends and you got a 250 rent deal, spacious living rooms, ok sized bedrooms. Recently it looks as if theyre done some remodeling/ replacements in the bathrooms as those look somewhat new. Ran into some problems there - fly infestation, ceiling cracks, bathroom issues, etc. But the complex was quick to fix which was nice. The atmosphere is normally very quiet - consists of mostly grad students or adults. Walk to campus in a few minutes - this was really awesome since you could go back in between classes for a quick meal or nap. Get a longboard and you literally just stand on it as it goes downhill to the science library - very convenient, esp. if youre an engineer with most classes towards that side of campus.Gym was pretty barren, not too great. Got a bench press and a couple free weights. Its alright if youre too lazy to go to UCR Gym and want a quick work out, but pretty lacking overall. Still, its better than nothing.Overall, great place with cheap rent. Its not as nice as other apartments, but you get what you pay for and if youre a student its convenient.
While the place is generally safe and convenient for UCR students, management here sucks. The new manager might seem all friendly and nice but she genuinely doesn’t care about you or your problems, she’s fake and you can hear it in her voice. Every time I have a problem, nothing really gets fixed. They’re bribing us with some rewards/gift cards to leave good reviews like how desperate. Also, they leave the gate doors unlocked when it used be closed and locked during the evenings. Sometimes I see homeless people come in and dig through the trash. Also, there’s poop on the ground sometimes, loud parties are thrown, people drive through the entrance when it clearly says not an exit (car accident waiting to happen). When will you guys have better management, Joseph was the best in my opinion. Soon it’s gonna end up like Grand Marc or like Palm Springs.
Vincent, the Community Manager is amazing. He helped our son secure a 1-bedroom apartment after his roommate backed out of their plan to lease a 2-bedroom apartment. Vincent was patient, kind, professional, and helpful during the entire process. Our son was panicking as he was going to be stuck with a 2-bedroom apartment and no roommate (we, the parents were also very worried!). It all worked out and thanks to Vincent our son has his first apartment and will be attending college this Fall. Thank you, Vincent!
Now Dwell Apartment Homes. The previous management company and managers have been replaced (and laid off?), and the rent has been hiked up considerably. 1-Bedroom apartments are now $1015 (previously $850), 2-Bedroom apartments are $1415 (previously $1180). Note, no utilities are included (no water, gas, electric, internet, etc.) It is a nice apartment building if you can afford it.
I love living here. vincent and aria made the move in process so easy. they helped me set up insurance and utilities. the only thing is my building does not have an elevator so moving was a pain. after everything was said and done i am glad to be done looking for a place. hope this helps
I have only been living here for a few months, but I love my 3 floor balcony view of the surrounding mountains. Just yesterday we saw the wild donkeys of riverside walking up the street, it was pretty amazing. With it being so hot lately, I am glad we have 4 pools to chooses from within the community.
During our lease the apartment was ok, but moving out the company was a hassle. They charged us twice for our last month and since we did not have sufficient funds to cover 2 months of rent they charged us an NSF fee and refused to remove it. The people at the leasing office tried to help but the company did not remove the fee.

2022-02-21I feel like some of these other comments may be from past tenants with eviction or something. Because they are very different from the living experience we have had here. Since day one, my apartment has been perfect! The Management team at The Dwell is always quick take care of any little question I might have. Also, I see them out there working hard everyday on the property, making It nice and clean. I love it here and love the staff.

2022-06-13I recently moved into Dwell and it is already an amazing community. The staff and neighbors are very friendly and helpful, and it is the perfect walking distance from UCR, less than a 5 minute walk. The amenities are great, 4 pools and 2 work out rooms are very useful. 5 stars!

2022-01-29Dwell is a beautiful complex! I love the vibe it has with the colorful doors! The apartments are huge inside and have a cute vibe. The girls in the office are so kind and love their job! They automatically made me feel like I was welcomed and at home!

2021-06-08We only stayed here for a month or two and honestly... it was a nightmare. First off... our upstairs neighbors let their children use their scooter inside the house antes them runs excessively like no one lives below them. Leasing office really didn’t do anything because we constantly had to call them every week or every other day. Cockroaches in our unit were all over the place. It’s bad that I believe the whole building is infested with roaches. They’ll crawl on us while cooking, sleeping, or just chilling in the couch. Complained about this too in the leasing office, we did the whole pest control once but we feel like no matter how much we move our things and furniture for the treatment... they’re just everywhere! It’s just a miserable place to be at, we don’t regret moving out early because the place was terrible.

2021-05-28My wife and I just moved out (May 2021) after being there for almost 3 years, and if you would have asked me before the pandemic, I would be shouting to the rooftops of how excellent this place was. Sadly, over the past year the place has gone to the dogs (literally) and been a place that I would never recommend to anyone. There are great things about Dwell. The apartments are very spacious, especially the living room. We did feel safe (for the most part)... We had to call the police a few times on our neighbors who were abusing each other. Also, the maintenance staff is the jewel of dwell. We became good friends with them and they helped us whenever they could. I truly feel sorry that these two great workers have to be tied to a property so poorly respected by its residences. The only problem we had with the apartment was the cockroaches. It got to a point where we stopped caring if we saw one scurry over our silverware or come out of our toaster oven because nothing we did fixed it. Plus, Dwell says they have pest control, but they require you to remove yourself and your pets after they spray. We dont have time for that. I would ask to opt out of paying for pest control.Like I said before, we adored Dwell. Our families loved visiting and it was the best student housing for UC Riverside. That all changed when COVID hit, students moved out, and the city took over the apartments and allowed individuals and families to live there subsidized. Now, these people are good people, but they have no respect for the property.Dwell is a pet friendly community, which we took advantage of and had a cat. However, many residences had large dogs and allowed their K9 companions to urinate and poop inside the complex in front of apartment doors. I personally reported a residence twice, and Dwell got back to me and said they would take care of it, but it seemed like it didnt make a difference. The management of Dwell even sent reminders of the pet policy, but it had nothing to back it up. Because of the management and their lack of courage to really fine these residences, this place is unlivable. Finally, being a member of the disabled community, Dwell absolutely fails in being ADA friendly. The doors are an inch above the sidewalks so we had to order a ramp for my wheelchair; the passageway to the parking is so narrow that I hit my chair against the wall a few times; and some laundry rooms are within the pools gates which gave my family great anxiety. I even emailed Dwell and talked to the staff about the dangers of having the laundry room by the pool. I cant swim, so I literally was risking my life walking to the laundry room. Now, they may say I could have used the one laundry room not inside the pool gates, but that wouldve require me to walk 200 yards, up stairs or up a steep road to it. Cmon, this is a tragedy waiting to happen.Im sad to say this, but if you are looking for a place to rent by UC Riverside, you should take Dwell off your list. Hopefully, once students return things will change, but I wouldnt move there if I knew what would happen. Maybe this review will help Dwell to step up and not just do one day of Care for Dwell.

2020-05-15Dwell has been an amazing experience. I’ve been living here for 2 years and the staff has always been very attentive with fixing any things such as light bulbs and kitchen appliances. The amenities like the pool and gym are awesome to have. Only issue you’ll have are occasional pets being off leash and odors from certain apartments. Street parking is miserable once school is back in session as students take up all the spots.Vincent and Ricardo have been very attentive with any requests to the best of their abilities.

2021-07-14If your thinking about moving in here I highly advise you not to, trust me it will be the biggest regret. Water was falling from my roof, due to the upstairs neighbor, so I called the front office and what a surprise they didn’t answer. If you have any issues i guess it’s best to fix it yourself, since no one is ever at the front office. Not only that the apartment is so cheaply made. My roomate used the blender and when he picked it up the counter the counter top paper ripped off. The rent for this place is way to high for what your getting. You can easily find a place that’s actually affordable and durable.

2021-06-08Nick B. has assisted me since mid March when I was living in MD to get an apartment. He went beyond the call of duty several times. One significant time was when I arrived in Scottsdale a day early. AZ Federal would only let me write a cashiers check if the lease contact was fir that day. We called Nick and he updated it and I didn’t have to stay in a hotel. Along with that, he is very attentive to assist me in various situations that need to be resolved.
