A very nice reward after a shoreline hike. The cave a deeper than those found up the coast at Corona Del Mar. Entering the first cave is through what looks like a small opening that quickly opens up into a large room. Beautiful views of the ocean looking out of the with contrast of of the dark of the cave and the sunlight outside. The hike is only about a half mile each way but feels a bit longer do to the slow walking on the rocks. Overall well worth the effort.
Definitely not easy to get too, and you will have to be quick which makes it more dangerous. We got half way and then the lifeguards came and made us leave because the waves were too dangerous. Still really pretty either way. Definitely wear shoes if you are going to attempt, you are asking for injuries if you try in flip-flops.
The cave in Dana Point was awesome! Lived here 3 years now and I cant believe I waited this long to check it out. Started off with free parking at Baby Beach, then walked behind the Ocean center to the beach. Walked along the beach to the right for about a mile or so to find the cave. The beach gets very rocky towards the end so make sure you wear good shoes. Inside the cave was incredible, its huge and has the perfect ocean view. I cant wait to go again!!
Best place to spend some time. But to go there you need to know the exact route. Put your maps to the dana point ocean institute and from behind it you will find a staircase into the beach. After you get in there turn right and go ahead for like 15-20 min(the way is full of rocks). Then you will be at the place. To your right there will be a small hole to get into the cave. And then you will be there. Sunsets are awesome. Would suggest it as a one time visit place.
This picturesque cave is well worth the hike over the rocky terrain. The entrance can be a bit hard to spot, and I actually told my wife that the tide must be too high for it to be visible when we arrived. Thankfully, she double checked and spotted the small hole in the rocks. Hooray for the powers of observation!
Really cool cave! Its a bit of a walk but not very challenging- hill-slides have washed out a little of the path so in places you have to climb over bigger rocks. The view is gorgeous the whole time and you can explore tide pools on your way there or back. Its all in the sun, so be prepared. When you get to the cave, the enterance is really small, but it opens up into a much larger cave with a great view. Make sure to time the tides! Water does go in the cave- dont get trapped!
ARE WE THERE YET? Sounds familiar? Yeah, it was further than I thought it would be. Just when you think its just around the corner its actually further. Thankfully, I have signal so I was able to check google maps on the phone. Went there today June 30th, it was 12noon high tide and 4:30pm low tide. We went there around 2:30 and was able to get inside the cave around 3pm. Please check tide times, I can see how someone could get trap. Wear CLOSED shoes! Lots of tide pools. My children were petrified of the marine isopods. These thousands of those creepy crawlies around the rocks.

2022-05-17Super fun and short trail along the sea cliff, go at low tide or close to it. Lots of rocks but still doable in sandals. The pirate cave is super neat. Worth the slow but short journey. It’s crowded on weekends so go on weekdays but even when it’s crowded not many people go all the way to the cave or if they do they don’t spend a lot of time there so it can be opportunity to chill for a bit in the cave but watch the tide closely. Worth the trek.

2022-04-10Beautiful views! Here, you can walk on the rocks along the beach. Less crowded than other beaches. You can go fishing here too. Lots of outdoor activities here.

2022-05-31From the stairs heading to the beach you have to walk to your right following the cliffs on a rocky ground full of boulders, quite hard without proper shoes. It takes around 20 mins to reach the cave, which after all is not nothing to write home about. More for an adventure basically. Note that cannot be reached from above nor from the bech on the other side, the only way is from the interpretation center. Watch out for the tides as you can get trapped and be ready for potential wet shoes!

2022-01-31It’s a moderate hike along the beach, I almost turned back when it looked like it was over low-tide to not get any further. However, was grateful I didn’t as it was just around the corner of where I chose to stop. Definitely go early/low-tide as the rocks I stepped on entering were submerged as I went back.

2022-06-12Be extremely careful when you go and with the correct shoes. Check the tides before going. If the tide is high or about o be high don’t go. Else you can get stuck. You have to go all the way to the end. In my picture it is around the corner so it seems like it is not there but where the girl with the red dress is standing, is the entrance. Do not go if the tide is high, you will not be able to get in. Don’t go in flip flops, I seen a lot of people hurt. Do not go with kids under 6 especially if it is not extremely low tide they can get hurt from the rocks. We seen kids gets hurt all the time here and question their parents ability to parent for taking them there.

2022-07-03Beautiful spot along the coast with a rocky hike to the caves under the Dana Point cliffs. Hike is 30 minutes but make sure it’s low tide as people can get stranded if the high tide comes in.

2021-04-27You’ll want to catch this park during low tide to make it to the cave safely. A good pair of shoes would be a must to scrambling across the rocks fairly easier . We parked in the main parking lot and walk down the long walk to the end. Actually a fairly easy hike over to the cave. Look forward the white rope to assist in one area and head around the corner. Fun day here!
