Discount Disneyland is a perfect reflection of Oakland.Though this aging heart beats irregularly surrounded by the broken car glass of its parking lot, Children’s Fairyland is a testament to Oakland’s tenacity to exist despite all odds. This is a place where all of the multi-cultural denizens of Oakland can exist in harmony while their children frolic in the ignorant bliss of children’s play. There is no other place where you will see so clearly the beauty of what unites all of the different people of Oakland, our children.Located inside of this barbed wire compound is a deteriorating dream kept alive. Started in 1950 as a direct response to the success of Disneyland, this wonderland has never seen better days. While this might appear to be a dis at first glance, it is actually a testament to the staying power of this gem of Oakland. This park is better than it’s ever been, and the patina of age only adds to its charm. As long as you don’t eat the food and the “Ferris wheel” doesn’t collapse, you and your children will most likely survive this adventure unharmed. While the deteriorating creatures and cobwebbed rides caught my eye at first glance, I felt the love and beauty of the place by the time I left. What appeared to be a completely dilapidated relic has been partially restored by a skilled painter, adding a real flair to the scarcely veiled Disney knockoff vibe. To the park’s credit, Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio, Peter Pan and Aladdin no more belong to Disney than they do their original creators, so all’s fair in Love and the reappropriating of beloved Creative Commons IP. Despite the occasional Mickey Mouse hidden in the frescoes, a great amount of care has gone into being true to the original art of John Tenniel on all of the Alice themed sections and they even added an emerald city from Wizard of Oz to throw off the scent for any circling corporate lawyers. While the Tom Sawyer fence is a cheeky throwback, I might be the only adult in Oakland under 60 years old who got the joke. The new paintings are clearly created by an actual artist, down to the custom no smoking signs sprinkled around the park. Without this loving restoration I would struggle to give this place more than 2 stars, it’s only a shame the artist remains unknown, at least to me.To say the park is tone deaf is irrelevant, the Children love it. The boys can be bandits as they hide in the old west town and pretend to hijack the barely operating train as it struggles along its dutiful double loop for each group of occupants. There is a real charm to the dark cracked cement tunnels that instilled a sense of wonder even in my cynical and rusty heart. This is because the park has the perfect amount of Mystery for a child. There is nothing straightforward about this Labyrinth stuck out of time. The brilliance of the place is that Imagination is the real fuel of Fairyland, and as long as the specter of Oakland is kept outside by the barb wire and the paint is refreshed every 20 years, that can never be taken away.
Perfect for little ones, not so much bigger children. We took my 2 y/o for his birthday (just a small family outing) for a couple of hours close to sundown. The place was all lit up with beautiful lights strewn everywhere. My 11 y/o daughter was bored very quickly, she is too big for most of the attractions. But my toddler, and my 8 y/o son and niece had a great time
I absolutely will never bring my daughter here again. This is not a safe place for children. While we were there we noticed a creepy man with a camera following families and recoding the children on rides. When he started filming my child I asked him to stop. He informed me he was a celebrity Youtube host from The Carpetbagger show and had permission to film whatever he wants, including children. I went to speak to security and they said there was nothing they could do as he too was a paying customer. When we realized my child was in his video on Youtube the next day I was absolutely appalled. I never gave permission for this park to sell our images to the third party to profit off of. Id like to know where all the other footage he shot went as he filmed for an entire day but made a thirty minute video. This park doesnt care about our children. They cared more about the rights of this grown man to film other peoples kids then my own desire to not be filmed. I will never be back. Children should be a priority over paid vloggers.
Our 2 year old grandson is captivated by this place. The staff is extremely friendly and welcoming. The Fairytale scenes (crooked house, the whale, pirates ship) are a bit dated and need some rehabilitation. Puppet shows are fun. The setting next to the lake is beautiful.
Wonderful place for kids to play, admission fee of $12 per person and kid. Small rides , amazing themes of rhymes and stories bought to life with house and characters. Petting animals like donkey, small horses, rabbits. Good puppet show and story telling. Kids will totally enjoy. Cafe bar for quick grab of foods. Sadly we missed the jolly train ride. Definitely recommend for kids under 5 yrs.
This place is amazing! Or 9 year old loves it and couldve spends the whole day riding rides and exploring every inch of this park. None of the rides were adult friendly (besides the train I think) so I thought the $13 per adult admission fee was a bit ridiculous, however the kids are able to ride all the rides for free unlimited, which was nice. For 2 adults and 1 kid it was $36 admission just as a reference. We came on a Thursday afternoon, and while there were animals, we couldnt pretty them which was disappointing but the staff informed us there are designated days for petting them, but he didnt have too much more information on that. The animals seemed happy and healthy and it wasnt super stinky (always a plus!). Beware of kids taller than 58, they wont be able to ride a good majority of the rides.
If you are old like me, you will find this delightful place a total throw back to your early childhood. It reminds me of Story Book Gardens at the Wisconsin Dells back in the 1950s where we took family vacations. You will relive the childhood adventures in Fairyland while children delight in climbing, sliding and tunneling through recreations of those tales. We attended a delightful program about starlight, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. 2 year old grandson loved and so did I. Train ride and sweet treats, yes.
I loved Fairyland as a child! Had to take a trip down memory lane from afar! I had my dog with me:)UPDATED REVIEW:My favorite place as a child I got to relive it as an adult! Fairytales 101 for the children now days! No one knows who Jack and the bean stalk is anymore! Regardless of what fairytales they know this is a must for children to attend! Created before Disneyland, this is one mans dream that has turned into a legacy for children to enjoy. With rides, puppet shows, slides and mazes for them to enjoy. See my pictures for more detail!I spent about 2 hours there and that included waiting in a long line for lunch. Several items they were out of so I settled on nachos and pizza. The healthy humus was no longer available! I was also surprised to hear they were out of milk! I did notice several people having a picnic lunch out on the grass and I wish I would of thought of that! Would of saved time and money! All in all...I throughly enjoyed my day and highly recommend visiting Fairyland. Its an inexpensive trip for children ages 2 - 10.
Great place to bring children ages 1 to 8. There are many attractions for little ones including a train, puppet theatre, crafts, and many other things. Parking is just 5 dollars and you can also buy food. It is in a park with a lake. It is a good idea to buy the membership for the year if you live in the area.
Just one of Oaklands magical places.Had so much fun with the grandkid.Bummer...summer camp sold out in January. Back when my daughter was a camp leader or little kid, there was still room when summer started. This year they sold out like it was a Bruce Springsteen concert in 1983.
Great spot for a family picnic and adventure for the little kids. Especially nice if you have toddlers who want to visit grandparents/great grandparents up the street at St Pauls Towers. Good parking. Great place to let toddlers run, ride the train, pet a sheep, listen to fairy tales, etc. Excellent soy lattes at the little pumpkin.
It has been about 30 years since my last visit! But I remember so many things being the same! It was a fun experience with my kids. Now I dont recall the Jack and Jill hill, but its Soo fun I want to make one in my yard!!! The story telling boxes are so loud, we didnt listen to many, some were not working, and the food took forever to get... But it was fun none the less. It looks well kept in some places, others could use attention. The animal area was very cute and one of our favorite sections. Lots of scattered restrooms it seemed like and I appreciated that! Everyone needs to take their family at least once.
Fairyland is always amazing. Brought my almost 3 year old and my friends 5 year old. They had an great time!! They enjoyed the rides and using their magic keys and even say still for the puppet show! We bought all tickets in advance! There is parking on site for $5-$10 and a few snacks available inside but I recommend bringing food there are lots of places for a picnic!
Fairyland is the best kids place in the East Bay. My father used to being me to Fairyland in the 70s and I just love that its still around for my daughter to enjoy. Weve had many a magical escapade at Fairyland; Winter Wonderland, Goblin Jamboree, random weekends or weekdays and have even thrown a birthday party there in the tea room party area. Its a favorite of most East Bay families. The price to get in is reasonable. The whole park is one big fairytale after another and is so much fun. With a Fairyland magic key you can listen to all the great stories and songs. There are animals to see, tunnels to run through, pirate ships to climb, music to play & trains to be ridden. And, lets not forget Western Town, a newer addition to Fairyland, but the kids have lots of fun. There is a jail, two story western style houses, a slide, fake ponies-lots if imaginative play opportunities. We love Fairyland and will continue to go til my daughter gives me the stink eye! LOL
Always an all time favorite! Come prepared to spend most of the day, cause there is so much to do. Bring a bag with goodies and plenty of water. The gardens are magnificent! And the rides are tons of fun for a little ones, I wish the jolly trolley had more cars though. Make sure you get yourself a key to unlock all the treasures in the park.
With the tickets being the price that they are, you would think they would renovate the place. Most of the statues and decorations are really looking run-down and could use a new paint job or something. I understand this place got some history but it could use some major TLC. My daughter still had a fun time so I can’t complain too much.
Fun for everyone!! Of course kids absolutely love it here and could spend all day wandering around looking at all the funny characters, going inside the adorable little houses and playing on all the rides. And for grown-ups there is an unmistakable sense of nostalgia and you can feel like a kid again too :)
Its a constant classic that everyone it Oakland loves. Its a pride of the city. My kids love it. My son especially loves the puppet shows. Almost stupid to not buy the membership if you have kids and live in the bay. They should have the pumpkin open more for us parents. Coffee is sometimes essential when you have kids running around the whole place. Which also means there is always something to do. Never a disappointment. Go yesterday.
I was a bit skeptical given how run down it appears, but was pleasantly surprised. My very active 2-year-old boy wanted to explore everything. Being a little past its prime ends up adding a lot of charm to the whole place. Even though the rides might not be as nice as the zoo, they are part of the ticket cost and my son cant really tell a difference. We even saw a goat jump from a roof to a tree! But what really set it apart in my book were the employees. The woman working at the entrance was so pleasant and seemed genuinely happy to be at work - this trend continued through all the employees I saw - train operator, carousel operator, pumpkin coffee vendor and the cafe manager, Brandon, who was incredibly sweet. Thanks for a surprise afternoon of fun!
My 4 year old loves it! We have a membership and all the rides are free. Its very easy to book reservations online. The food is reasonably priced. They close at 4pm. I wish they extend their closing time by a couple of hours. They close from 12 to 1 for deep cleaning & sanitizing which is a relief.
Childrens fairyland is a gem that Oakland should be proud to have.Theres an electric train, puppet shows every day, small animal zoo, a ferris wheel, and lots of little interactive exhibits. This was created in 1952 and was a major inspiration for Disneyland. As a matter of fact apparently Walt Disney poached several of the designers and employees to start Disneyland.Theres a food court, wild West world, and much more. If you have children and are in Oakland its a must-see. Sign up for a membership to get discounted access, its worth it.
This place only had 2 of the 3 rides working. It was a nice place for my toddler to run around in. I dont know why they charge adults when all we do is stand around. The only big issue is the neighborhood. We parked our car right next to it and it got broken into. Broke our glass to take my things from the trunk. We are tourists so be careful if you are one too. Oakland is not a safe place from my experience at all. Take all your belongings to the park.
Large & varied old-fashioned amusement park for children. Definitely showing signs of wear, could really use a community effort to clean and update/paint, etc. From a 2 to 7 year olds vantage point, a wonderful playland. Places to climb (old West Town, bridge) & run, Mad Hatter tunnel, small rides, lunch/snack order window & picnic tables. A little tram circles part of the park....after posting this review, I learned the park gives reduced rates for area children who couldnt come otherwise & that it also could use donations to aid volunteers in keeping it available. So I made a donation in our daughters name. Thanks to those who provide upkeep & keep Childrens Fairyland open. It really is a unique place for children!
This place is amazing! Honestly, before covid it would have been overwhelming I suspect, but with limited capacity there was plenty of space for the kids to play. It was safe and really loved that we could give the kids more freedom and not fear if we lost sight of them. There are some wonderful attractions for them to explore. I really enjoyed that some places adults cannot get into or go, thus giving the kids their own space. Everything is designed for them. Small toilets and low sinks in the bathrooms. The rids are kid sized. And it goes on like that. We have two kids that have some special sensor needs. One seeking and the other adverse. They both found their stride and spaces they could get what they needed. The seeker enjoyed a large hill they made for Jack and Jill, and rolling down it to regulate. The adverse enjoyed the puppet show and cuddling with mom to watch. The staff are mostly bored teens, but they were friendly and helpful. We drove 50miles to come and stayed the night at a hotel. It was worth it. (We did other things too but yeah).
Its been over 3 years since we were last at Fairyland and I was happy with the touch-ups theyve done! All of the paint had been refreshed and the rides and shows were great! We were there for a party and the staff was friendly and very attentive to our needs. My daughter did not want to leave. 😊
My kids love this place! This place has the right mix of tech and non-tech play for kids, so each kid gets to choose their paradise. It is not too big, so managing the kids is easier. Lake Merritt next door is an added attraction, so hop over to this place on a weekend. You will not go wrong with this one.
We had the most amazing time!! We already love Fairyland and after it was closed due to covid we really missed it!! The classic atmosphere, the tales and the animals are just beautiful! My little ones, five years and two years, enjoyed every moment. I did too! I felt comfortable seeing staff sanitizing after every ride, paths being assigned to one way, kids taking turns, social distancing followed most of the times. We all had so much fun.
We are throughly enjoying our visits to Childrens Fairyland. The atmosphere that has been created for Bay Area families is so nice. Clean, Beautiful landscape, and they still perform live puppet shows. My 5yr old loves it.Thank you Fairyland for hanging in there so that my daughter can experience some things of my youth. My family and I are now members.I highly recommend Oaklands Childrens Fairyland for your next outdoor outing with your young one.
My daughter enjoyed out here. The place has a few attractions and animals like donkeys, horse, chicken and sheep. They also have a train ride where parents can sit along and a picnic area. This is good for young kids. Older kids may not enjoy much. If you have very young kids then they may not be allowed to ride in the carousel. They have a height requirement. My daughter was 5 yr old so she could go on all rides on her own. we went 9-12 and felt the 3 hours were sufficient for seeing everything. There was a puppet show and a fairy show as well which lasted 20-30 mins.
Im trying to understand all the good reviews. This place is run down, dirty, and there is not a whole lot to do. My son is 7 and I think this would be the cut off age. Any older and they probably would be too tall for the rides.. However my son did enjoy himself, but then again he has been home all summer doing nothing. I would say take your time and money elsewhere.
My son loved this place even though he was too young at 2.5 to do some of the rides and know the characters. I give it 4 stars because it is clean, but pretty run down. Almost everything needs a new coat of paint. Also, the animal enclosures are pretty small which is disappointing for animal welfare. They do seem well taken care of though. Plenty to do for younger kids.
Place is lots of fun for young kids, our 12 year old was too old for 90% of the stuff there but we still went for a family pass because they let us upgrade or day pass which cost almost $70 for 5 people, 2 adults and 3 children, for another $65 we got an unlimited annual pass.During covid you must schedule in advance, kids must wear masks unless eating (their vigilant about this), and we were only able to see about half the attractions in the 3 hour time slot. I guess we have some for next tine....
I and my daughters absolutely love Fairyland. I appreciate that nobody has tried to update this treasure with more modern attractions. The simple sense of wonder offered by Fairyland is hard to come by and Im grateful to be able to share it with my kids. The membership rates are reasonable and enable us to drop in for even brief visits.
Fairyland is a wonderful place for small kids. Its a little old and well loved but the kids have a blast. older kids would probably be board...my guess is the ideal age to go would be between 2 and 7. The bathrooms are OK and there are spaces for picnics. Right now with covid restrictions everyone must wear a mask and no food is sold there. However you can bring a picnic from home. Parking is $5, tickets are $13, and keys are $3.
It was a great place for my 3 yr old grandson to go for Halloween. He had a blast! It is such a pleasant family atmosphere. Great place for preschoolers. I havent been there in over 30 years since my daughter was little and I still remembered her childhood and my own. I just wish the rides were available but an enjoyable outing nonetheless.
If youre in Oakland, and you have young kids, this is an absolute must do. Theres nothing else like this anywhere. Theres petting zoo animals, theres tiny rides like a carousel, ferris wheel and train. Theres multiple slides, theres a maze, theres puppet shoes, theres sand and play structures. Its amazing really. Cant say enough good things about Fairyland. It with forever be an amazing part of the city.
The facilities are old, which need some maintenance .The restrooms are dirty.Today is grandparents day,so it is free for grandparents, which is great. If you get a stamp at entrance, you could come back again the whole day, nice! We love this place,we will come back again when my child get older.
A lot bigger than I imagined! Very adorable and reminds me of a lot smaller and cheaper Disneyland experience. A little rundown but that adds to the charm. My daughter loves this place and finds so much joy in turning the key to listen to all of the nursery rhymes and fairytale stories. I would highly advise buying the $3 key at the entrance! We have a pass here and now go quite often. The only bummer is it is only open weekends! We wish it was open all week long!
Its a great place for toddlers and kids. Took our 17 month old here and she had a lot of fun. There is something for every age. Even though there were lots of families at the park, but the place is so big it didnt feel too crowded. Theres a food area but we didnt get anything from it. We will definitely come back and even consider getting yearly membership ($12 per person one time admission vs. $119 for two adults + three kids for a whole year).
I’ve had a family membership here for 5-6 years and it continues to be exciting for my kids every time we go. This is a real gem and has enough going on to keep the family entertained for a full day. Take advantage of the puppet show, children’s theater, story tellers, arts and crafts, and other activities they offer. They also offer sleep overs at the park during the summer that are well organized and a lot of fun!
This place was amazing for my toddler! There are lots of fun activities for the little ones. It’s hard to find fun, playful places for a three year old, but this is the perfect place for toddlers! You pay the admission and can ride all the rides as many times as you want. It’s a really neat place! There are different fairytale themed areas all over- Alice in Wonderland area, book reading places, slides, dragons, carousel, hill sliding area and much more!
My grandmother took me here and I grew up loving this place. I had an original key and it still works! I take my toddler here now and she loves it too.Unfortunately they dont have healthy food. So, I always pack my own organic, low sugar, pasture raised meat snacks and drink. They do have free water fountains and plenty of places to enjoy a shaded picnic near a play structure/activity if you need to sit and pause. The staff is kind. The Carousel is well maintained! Mind you your child must be 39 inches in height to ride. No adults. Not all rides have height requirements, which is good when your child, like mine, has shorter younger friends. The only adult friendly ride is the train, which is cute and fun.A nice feature for the potty trained kids is the height and size appropriate toilet and sink, my 3½yr old loved her autonomy in this regard. As most public bathrooms shes likely to nearly fall in. Oh, BTW Im mentioning the bathroom near the puppet stage. Please do make the puppet show, its worth it! My little one loves it everytime, smile ear to ear.
Not thoughtful or helpful with children with disabilities. This place is rude and not good. They are quick to remind you that they are a private place (so they can basically say they could care less). So disappointed and disgusted. It’s no wonder why they advertise needing donations so much on their website.
Wonderful place to take your child for visits are birthday parties. Live animals, rides, puppy shows, food and souvenir store. Price is fair. This place has been around for years. I remember going there when I was a kid 50 years ago. Brought back memories when I brought my child and again with bringing my grandchildren. Start a tradition with your family.
A sweet gem. It was SO nice to have a fun filled day where we could say yes to everything. Can we climb on the pirate ship? YES! Can we watch the puppet show? You bet! Can we ride the carousel? Of course! We stayed until the park closed and the children were delighted by every nook and cranny of this place. Very charming.
Very cute kids place. My 5 year old son loved this place so much! This place is a toddlers and young kids dream come true. All sorts of kid rides from a train, to mini Ferris wheel, to carousel that do not cost extra. Rides supervisors are very pleasant, smily and clearly very helpful. Plenty area in the shade for little ones. Overall, this place was clean, bathroom was clean, friendly staff, price for entrance and food was average (not overpriced at all!) You and your kinds come out feeling you had a lovely time !!Some details about Childrens Fairyland-$10 admission (1-100yrs)-Yearly membership available-$5 for parking for 1 day-Lots of places for kids for climbing and sliding-$3.00 for Storybook key. If you purchase this, your little one to stick this key in a box and listen to a quick story which has your favorite childhood stories! Also you can take this key to home and use for future.
Great for small children five and under. You can spend at least 2 or 3 hours here. Lots of areas to have picnics which I highly recommend because I stood in line for almost 25 minutes just to order my food. They do have a lot of selections but with only one food place that two people are running is not convenient at all.Overall the place needs to be updated and a little more attention to but the kids dont seem to mind at all. My.kid loved the animals there. My favorite part of course was the little library of books in a cute little house it was a great place for us to read to our kid
We went for the first time this week and loved it so much we bought a membership. This is a haven for 3-6 year olds. My 1yo enjoyed playing here as well, but was too young for most of the rides. Also, adults are not allowed on the rides which makes it nice for the kids. There are tons of places to play and a couple nice places to eat with some healthy options. My kids also enjoyed the puppet show and storytime.
Fun place to take little kids. Were talking 2-6 year olds. You must be with a child in order to enter the park so theres that little extra point of safety. The park isnt too big, just the right size for little kids before they get too tired. Lots of fun buildings and places to run and play. Could use a little maintenance, paint, and cleanup.
This is an incredible, perfectly small kid sized amusement park. We took our twin 5 year olds and our 2.5 year old, and it was engaging for all of them. We made it through all of the park during the course of a fun day.Bonus points for having a coffee stand with good coffee for tired parents. :)
This was our first visit to Childrens Fairyland. We came with our daughter in law and grandson. What a great place for kids; our three year old grandson had a great time. The entrance fee was reasonable at $10 a person. The grounds and building looked a bit run down. There is a good chance that we will be back.
Fantastic for little kids 1 to 6, although some.of the older kids also had fun at the pirate ship playground area. They have all sorts of little houses with a magic key used to turn on speakers that recite a story that our 3 year old loved, a couple of rides, a puppet show and a few other things.
This is a great family destination for young children. All the staff were friendly and enthusiastic and the kids loved it. They had a puppet show, train rides, live animals and fun playgrounds. I saw quite a few kids crying as they were leaving because they didnt want to leave. A lot cheaper than Disney Land but for the young kids, probably just as fun and not as crowded.
Not the best for wheelchair ♿ accessibility! Too bad, they just changed so much to be kinda more accessible and yet nothing there for the disabled community. The rides are breaking and the food is going to outlast the fallout. I love bringing my kid there cause he enjoys the fun times. It is good for the kids as long as they enjoy themselves it is worth it. But the disabled thing needs to change ASAP!
The kids seemed to enjoy it but it is a little smaller than I expected. It is a little rundown but again the kids had fun and the price was not too bad. However the main reason for the low score was the food line. The food was not all that great or expensive, however we ordered just a couple hot dogs and were told it would take 15 minutes. That would be fine if it did not take 40 minutes to actually get said food
Its not new at 64 years old, but the kids in 2020 still love it. The puppet show is so classy and sweet, make sure you can enjoy this 15 mins of bliss! Bring a picnic lunch to eat at the Western town or buy hot dogs at the stand. The cowboy buildings are children only. The kids dont seem to mind the wait for the jolly trolly. Ideal day trip on a sunny day for the whole family.
I remember from my childhood this magical place that I went to with my grandparents, though I seriously thought it must have been a dream because it seemed so surreal. I never knew the name until I was an adult and mentioned it to my mom, she mentioned it was probably Fairyland. So, having kiddos now, we made a special trip and sure enough they *loved* it. We bought a membership because at $9/person it ends up worth while, and it s nice to have the freedom to drop in for 2-3 hours randomly, especially with little kids who tire easily. Living Social has membership specials every so often.Cons: —there is always some big inconvenient school group in the way, good for them having a place to come but for other kids its awkward. —Also, the staff is not happy-disney-people, especially at the lunch shack, they can be blunt and rude. —there are a lot of really little kids, like sub 1 year old, along with their (typically overprotective) parents. Just weird. —parking in the lot makes for a long walk, bring a stroller! My kids love this place, they love the tiny rickety train, and the child size fairytale creations and exhibits. I like the simplicity, and non-commercialized view of classic tales.
Pros: Great place for kids, my 3 year old loved it, running all over the place and was VERY excited the whole time. Tones of stuff to do for them and a lot of kids, great location by the lake. Things are a bit out dated but kids dont care, most things work and great for kids maybe 8 years and under.Con: $10 from ages 1 to 100, Shouldnt be that much for adults because lets ace it, not many adults are there for themselves and my one year old didnt use any ride there and ha to pay for her too. Also parking is $5 which isnt too bad but better off finding parking.Overall, great place for kids, would have given 5 stars but the $10 for admissions for adults and 1 year old.
Many, many years ago I used to bring my kids here. One of them celebrated his second birthday here, and now he is in college and doesnt spend as much time with Mom and Dad. It seems like yesterday. We kept the key, i wonder if it still works? It brings me tears of joy to read all the positive reviews. I just read a review about Fairyland for grownups, what?!Another one is coming up on Friday September 27th called Drawn together Will have to check it out. I would choose to spend a day here rather than Disneyland...
We have been many times before (because its amazing!) , but today was different since we were visiting during Covid 19. I loved that the park had two separate visiting times with an hour in between, so they have plenty of time to sanitize the entire park. While we were there I saw employees wiping down literally everything. There were sanitation stations everywhere as well as new hand washing stations posted throughout the park. In the high frequented areas there was staff posted to help keep social distancing. Overall I think theyre doing an amazing job making the park a safe place for people to visit during Covid.
Loved the place and my daughter does too, we were there today and Im sad to say that we saw rats running around by the picnic area. Hope they take better care of the place. I feel sad to write this review because I love the place, but it should be secure specially for little ones.
TRADITION !Im 70.I visited and enjoyed it when I was a kid........(when Jim Henson was first starting out)......Naturally when my son was little Itook him. He liked it.Recently my son,. his family and Itook my 3 year old grandson. He loved it.Not much has changed.GOOD WHOLESOME FUN in Oakland.
If you have been to real amusement parks coming here will be a disappointment. Fairy land is very slow, old, it definitely needs some updates. My kids were ready to leave within 1 hr of arriving. Took me longer to drive to fairy land then the time we actually spent there. It was very cheap to get in, a couple of dollars. Overall if your a amusement park type of person that likes going to Disneyland, Knotts, or Universal Studios your going to be disappointed with fairy land like my kids were. I seen a review that compared it to Disneyland, thats a bold face 🤥 lie. Lol that person that wrote that has never been to Disneyland 🤣
Childrens Fairyland at Oakland is a fun place for kids especially below 8 years. We spent a wonderful day with our grand kids who thoroughly enjoyed every set there. The Park has numerous story book sets such as Alice in Wonderland, Snowwhite & 7 dwarfs, Noahs ark, Little Miss Muffet and many more. They have slides for kids of various ages. They have Puppet Shows and Magic Shows which kids over five would be thrilled to watch. Children can create and learn at the Arts and Crafts Center. There is a small zoo too with animals such as rabbits, pony, goat and donkey. They hand you a key which unlocks story telling and music. At the Cafe we enjoyed fries with family at the Picnic Tables. A big park and Lake Merritt are located close by which add to the fun. A place worth visiting on week ends and holidays with family.

Last minute idea for my son (almost 7) and his friend. We live in Cupertino and this was a bit of a drive, however, well worth the drive. I enjoyed the details put into the park and my son as well as his friend had a blast. Photos with Santa and the Christmas Tree Tap dance show were great. We will definitely be visiting again
Needs to be revamped, disappointed that ticket prices are so expensive for adults when there is nothing for adults to do. My husband and I took our daughter for her 4th birthday along with my 10 year old sister and my mom. $72!! And my sister was too tall for any of the rides. My 4 year old was the only one who enjoyed herself, but I think she would have had just as much fun if we had taken her to a free public park. I understand that Fairyland was built in the 1950s, so I guess that explains it, but it desperately needs to be updated. Also, my daughter was really looking forward to the fairiesand we didnt really see any. If they had paid just one person to walk around dressed like a fairy, she would have been ecstatic. Maybe the ride operators could dress up like fairies? If they turned their animal attractions into a petting zoo, that would have been a huge improvement as well. All of the animals there are typical petting zoo animals, goats, ducks, bunnies, donkey. But they are behind fences that are difficult for small children to see through or over. Idk, just wasnt what I was expecting.
This is a little Park for kids with a story book theme. There are animals to pet, a small train and lots of slides and stuff to check out. Dont forget a key to make the story boxes talk. Once a year they open the park to adults from 7 pm to 10 pm. Its a benefit to keep park costs down. I had a blast and recommend it highly. There was good food and drink, you get two free drinks with admission. Please look at the post under Bradford Q Smith on FB to see photos of the event and dont miss next year. Tickets are very limited so dont wait to buy them. Story book costumes are encouraged.
My daughter loves this place. The only place that has a kid size ferris wheel. Great for kids aged 2-4. Similar to Happy Hollow in SJ, but smaller. It is next to Lake Merritt, which is great for walking. If you can get street parking that would be nice, but paid parking is good too.
Spent three hours with the grandkids at Fairyland. They played on every ride, explored all the animals, and were simply riveted by the puppet show. Their favorite activity, other that running at full speed during our entire visit, was sliding down a grassy knoll on pieces of cardboard. Ate a reasonably priced lunch at Johnny Appleseeds Cafe on the property. Staff on the grounds and in the Gift Shop were extremely helpful and nice to deal with.
Locals who grew up going to Fairyland regard it very fondly. My three-year-old niece loved it. I like that its an outdoor activity that uses the imagination. I dont like how rundown the place is and some of the fairy tale themes. It works for the 2-5 toddler set, though not as engaging for parents as other places.Fairyland doesnt have great food and drink offerings, so bring snacks or a picnic. Cool spot for birthday parties. I think they do overnights, too...
Great outdoors place to take kids. You can pay to enter a nearby street with parking by lake Merritt and may have to walk a while to get there. When youre there, you can buy tickets and optionally a key to make the boxes talk. The rides in attractions have a story book theme, things like Alice in wonderland or similar, trains, animals. There are periodic stage shows or plays. I took my kids at two and four, the younger side of each. That was probably on the young side and three plus or closer to four will get a better use out of it due to the size.If you want to save money on food you can bring in your own lunch to eat.

Enchanting (albeit little run down) place to bring young kids to enjoy the magic of nursery rhymes and fairy tales. There are only a few rides, a few animals (no petting or feeding), and a couple of food shops. Running around and exploring the exhibits are the main attractions.
We had a birthday party for my 2 year old at Fairyland today (circus place) at 1st I was skeptical about it but it turn out be a great day and place to celebrate my sons bday .I have to give lots of thanks to Corina for being a great and amazing host went the extra mile ! Definitely the best experience and for sure celebrating my sons birthday there again.
Perfect for kids under 6. Its large enough that they can run around and be crazy, but not large enough that its a non-stop line waiting hike. Its old (older than disneyland apparently) and not super updated, but young kids dont care about that. Its also cheap, which is a huge plus.Highly recommend as theyve done some pretty great things on what I imagine is a pretty lean budget.
Historical icon of our childhood. Very simple basic areas with nursury rhyme themed play stations for little ones to enjoy. Cute train that circles the park. Insect snake house that thrills. Picnic tables through out. No high tech anything.. Puppet plays. Keep a close eye as these are old exhibits uneven cobbled paths. A low-key inexpensive place to bring your family.
A good ace for small kids. My oldest daughter, 9, was actually bored,... My 6 year old was okay with it and my 4 year old loved it. The entrance fee is really good considering you can do everything in there with almost no waiting line. I need to substract one star, however, because the food situation was not that good. Fries had this strange fish-taste Andy the worst, they had no ketchup?! What the hell?
A wonderful gem; a throwback to pre-commercial amusement with children. My kids have loved this spot since age 1 and still do, four years later. What it lacks in million dollar investments of the larger amusement parks, this one has in charms, and the combination of animals and rides never fails to bring happy faces.
1.Safety of kids in the giant wheel is to be improved. There is no belt inside the gondola/cage for the kid to the seat. While starting the wheel, there is a jerk and when it is stopped for boarding the next kid . Also, due to aging of the mechanisms there is a sideway shake of the cage resulting in the falling of the kid from the seat within the cage.Either this should be corrected or the entire wheel is to be redesigned to enable an adult to be allowed to sit inside the cage.2. Many paintings of rhymes have faded with time.3. The puppet show was excellent.
My husband and I went to use tickets we got by donation, and they told us adults werent allowed without children, for the safety of the children. We havent been able to conceive, and nobody we know in the area has children, so I guess we children at heart cant enjoy Fairyland. Really disappointing, we wont be back nor donate again.
You cant ask for a better spot to take your little ones. First, you can beat the price. Even a large family will find this place budget friendly. They have rides like carosel train, and mini ferris wheel. They also have varoius play areas and structures. I believe the train is the only ride adults may ride. If you forget to pack a lunch they do have food choices... But not really healthy choices. We bring our cooler and leave it in the car. The best part is the do not allow adult in without a child. So no wandering weirdos to worry about. Last, they offer birthday party packages at reasonable prices.
Kids love it! I saw so much Patagonia gear I thought that I was climbing El Capitan. Kids can wander and explore, while having a great time. But as an adult, I do not want to talk to you about your views or parenting style. Bring your kids and they will be so grateful you did!
Its fun for the kids to be sure, but a little run down/not well kept. Further, the food wait times seem simply unacceptable to me. I highly doubt they are making their burgers, fries and chicken strips from scratch, rather they are likely bought frozen, in bulk, but their prices are high and the wait times were 30 minutes. It was a busier weekend day, but seriously youre losing money here. It cant be overpriced, mediocre and have a huge wait.
Childrens Fairyland is sweet in so many ways. Homegrown in Oakland from an in earnest and successful effort to beautify and make Oakland even better for families in the late 50s. Its a botanical garden too for all intents and purposes. They propagate their own plants and the place is filled with a rich and well maintained variety of plants. The daily puppet show is amazing. Wholesome and lovely and great.
Benioff Childrens Hospital had their Halloween party here for kids with heart disease.Ive never been here, but it is actually pretty big and quite a few things to do. The party was held in the later hours, parking wasnt that bad during that time.Tons of stuff for kids to do and explore.
Excellent amusement park for young children along Lake Merritt in central Oakland. Very old school, nostalgic. All of the traditional USA childhood nursery rhymes represented, from Mother Goose to Alice in Wonderland! Lusciously landscaped with mostly native plants, do environmentally friendly. Some bedding plants for sale. Convenient location. Affordable. Parking lot for a fee. Metered onstreet parking also convenient. Bike friendly, close to public transportation.

2021-08-01Havent been back here in years but Im definitely glad to have revisited. Bought our tickets online which was good because since covid theyve modified some things which are clear on their site. Tickets are sold in 2 different time slots: 9a-12p or 1p-4p (they close 1 hour in between for deep cleaning and sanitization of the park). Some attractions are closed including the food court but they have a modified park map online that you can download. Prices were 13.99 for anyone 2 years old and over. CDC approved masks are required inside the park at all times (expect when eating/drinking).My 8 year old niece LOVED it so much here. She darted through most of the attractions in the brief hour and a half we had to spend before they closed for the cleaning/sanitizing. When I asked her what was her favorite part she grinned and said everything! We brought my mom with us and even she loved it. Seeing the nursery rhymes and fairytales my mom read throughout her childhood in real life at fairyland was magical for her, definitely an endearing experience for them both despite their age difference! Although it was a bit crowded Ive seen worse here and there wasnt so many kids that lines were super long or my niece felt discouraged by the wait times. The flora and fauna are breathtaking. The choice in flowers help bring that fairytale feeling even more. This was a great way to spend our Saturday morning!

2021-07-02Decent little place for bringing your kids for few hours. It has ferry wheel, carousel, kids train, maze and lots and lots of slides. There is a theatre, puppet show, eateries and bunch of other activities.Good place for 5 to 6 year old. Bigger kids well probably get bored easily.

2021-06-11My son and I had a blast! He is 6 and RAN for DAYS. I think I am still more tired than he is somehow... ANYWAY.. its was CLEAN and the staff were GREAT! SUPER friendly and helpful. Well worth the admission. Parking is $4 for 4 hours. The park outside of Fairypand is also a FANTASTIC spot to let the kids play and run. I will be coming back.

2021-06-28They have two different times you can go and play. Purchase tickets in advanced on their website to save time upon entry. Overall, the place is pretty large and could spend the entire 3 hours allotted. I would say its more for younger kids, toddler aged. But even my 6 and 8 year olds enjoyed it and didnt want to leave when it was time to go. My only complaint is the upkeep of all the displays. A LOT of them are aged over the years and some behind the glass displays are super dirty/dusty. They have a plastic key you could purchase and insert into some boxes throughout the park to hear it give an audio story telling. But some of these boxes were jammed with an object. The audio is also very poor, low volume and quality, almost like trying to listen to a cassette tape and hearing that static sound in the background. Other than those complaints myself, this is a great place to bring your little ones.

2021-07-27My sons 13 and 4 years old. Had a blast here. Just wish they were open longer couldnt do or see everything in a 3 hour period. 3 hours is not enough time for this place especially having young children with you. I understand they need time to do their deep cleaning and have to go by what the covid rules are right now. But at least let people come back if they want so the finish seeing everything. Its not like the tickets are cheap and some people come from different cities that are not in the bay area so they cant just go here whenever. This was my first time ever going here and couldnt see everything and dont know when I can come back I live 3 hours or so away. But I would go back for my kids.

2022-06-18Fairyland is a wonderful place to spend time with our toddler! We appreciate this historic amusement park for families with young children. Its so fun for the little ones, and at $15 per person with unlimited rides, space spaces to run and play, and puppet shows, its well worth the price of admission.

2022-01-10Weve been bringing out granddaughter here for 5 yrs now and she will be 9 next month. She loves this place. The coffee and food is way better then youd actually think. They have an awesome little coffee house that serves up yummy and strong cappuccinos. Lunch is on the other side, I recommend the veggie burgers. She really enjoys the pirate ship area and climbing to the top, puppet and or magic shows, the dragon slide, card house, this little grassy hill where they slide down on cardboard (lol) and old west Town the most.We maybe can fit one or two more trips in before she is too old. It will always have a special place in my heart.I do wish they would clean the cobwebs off their garden creatures, sculptures, etc. Fresh paint jobs would turn this park around too.But the grounds outside have gotten much prettier and the garden inside is looking really lovely, so I can see they are actively keeping up.Its a bit depressing when you go through some of the attractions and they just look neglected . Which is why I give 4 stars instead of 5.

2021-10-02Fairyland was one of the first theme parks created for children. Some people say that Walt Disney visited Fairyland several times before he created Disneyland.Recently, I took my 2 grandsons to Fairyland. The 8 year helped watch over the 3 year old, and still had fun himself. We went to the puppet show—it was a little slow for them—they seemed to be more interested in moving their bodies. One of my grandkids favorite spots was the Alice in Wonderland Maze.PROS--Inexpensive tickets for a theme park: $13 each compared to over $100 at Disneyland--Limited number of people allowed in park--Parking close by--Discount days available for groups of at least 5--Free tickets available for people who can’t afford it--Kid sized rides, petting zoo, and puppet show--Park can be rented out for weddings and parties when not open to publicCONS--Older kids, who aren’t into fairy tails or tooth fairies might be bored--Have to reserve tickets in advance—can’t just drop in on a whimHighly recommend for children around 8 years old and younger!

2021-06-18Great place to take small children. Nicely shaded. Kids seemed to like the puppet play which surprised me. Interesting little buildings for the kids. Staff was patient working with the kids. Worth supporting this place.

2022-05-05I was able to sneak up on a puppet while they were doing their show, grab it and call it my own... but they said I couldnt keep it. I had to release it. Other than that place was cool, kid liked it a lot
