The host called me amigo, friend. The pico salsa was delicious! Nice choice of black beans, pinto beans, and refried beans with combinations. I chose pinto beans which were delicious! Had a spinach and cheese enchilada. Perfect combination of flavors with the beans rice and enchilada. Cant wait to go back!
Not impressed to say the least. Food was okay, meat was day and not very tender. The waitress was nice and sweet but not attentive enough, especially when there was two waitresses plus and assistant in only 4 tables. I made you wonder if they were cooking and serving. I hate to be there will the Full House! The one positive side they do have the most amazing asada fries Ive ever had
Carmelas is a great value for your money. Huge portions for a good price. The blackberry margaritas are delicious and the best Huachuca anywhere. The tortilla soup is also one of my favorites. I have been eating here for years and poor Carmela has been putting up with me and my friends antics with patience and great service for so long. Thanks Carmella, you are the hardest working woman in the Mexican restaurant biz for sure and deserve all the best!
The food was decent, but the service was subpar. To start, we asked for no straws with our drinks and instead got two straws in one drink. When the food arrived, we tried to confirm with the person who brought the food to our table which dishes were which, and her response was that she didnt know since she didnt take our order. The reason we were asking was because of allergies mentioned when we ordered, so that wasnt very reassuring.Overall the meal ended up being okay, and the price was reasonable. But the quality of service and poor environmental policies mean that I wont likely be back.
Worst service ever! The blonde waitress is the rudest person ever. She had a terrible attitude and when I accidentally spilled my water she threw a dirty rag on the table and left it there. When ordering our food she kept rolling her eyes. I don’t know who hired this lady, but I promise, I will never return to this place because of her. Spoke to the cook about the waitresses behavior and she was every kind. I left my number to the cook so I can speak to the owner and didn’t receive a call back. Do not recommend this place.
Unable to locate a staff member in the entire front of the house, after waiting for 10+ minutes in foyer of restaurant. Calling out to staff in the back led to laughter on their part, but no response. Sat myself. Was scolded for doing so. No menu brought. Asked for one, still no menu.Ignored when I waved at staff member. I left.
Weird, expensive gut bomb with little to no flavor. Luckily there’s a ton of it to ram unceremoniously down your gullet. As I said in other reviews, why become a cook if you don’t like cooking??A friendly word to the beautiful tourists who come visit us here: wait until you get back to the Bay Area to get Mexican, or go to Chipotle, Humboldt County’s best “Mexican” restaurant.Or better yet:LoCo FishCo is a great fusion truck. Go there.Sadness.
I had a very disappointing experience tonight. I ordered two regular carne asada burritos with green salsa on the side. The total for this order was $19.27 even though the last time i got the same thing it was $17.97. I went to pick it up, paid, signed the receipt for $19.27. I checked my bank statement almost immediately because I wasnt sure why the charge was different, and for some reason it was $4.00 more than what I was supposed to be charged. The burritos were really good the first time, but they were smaller and wrapped loosely the second time. I called and spoke to them on the phone and they said they would take care of it, but when I went in they told me it wasnt their fault and that they wouldnt do anything about it. Its not really about the price, a couple dollars isnt a big deal, but its disappointing that they messed up the transaction and wouldnt do anything to fix it. The burritos didnt taste bad, theyre actually pretty good, but the service was subpar. I dont think I will be going back unfortunately.
The food and atmosphere are really good. Simple, traditional. Usually not overly busy. Big portions. Great price. The service leaves a lot to be desired though. Slow. Servers often vanish for long periods of time. You usually get the food in a prompt manner, so thats good... but can often wait a long time if you need something after, or for the check.
The food was just warm, the waitress forgot his soda and my side of avocado until the end so we didnt really need em. And I ordered 2 tacos on a Tuesday, didnt know their special was 4 for like $8 so I ordered 2 for $11 and wasnt told ab the offer. I think I got charged the lesser but I didnt pay so Im not sure. It was only $21 for 2 of us to eat 2 tacos w a little extra so thats was cheap and fit the bill but wasnt great. Ive heard they arent that great and Ill just remember that. Ritas was full so.
Tortillas are hand made but thin. The prices are as expected for the area. Expect $15-20 per person. Service was slow, but happy hour prices are great. I got 2 IPA pints for $5.50. They have a bar and bar seating. Other seating are tables and booths. My eyes were bigger than my stomach, so be warned, the photos make the food smaller than they appear by 25% I would say. I ordered a #20, 2 burritos, 1 taco, bean and rice for $15.99. I also had 2, IPA beers for $5.50. Enjoy!
Both chicken and beef tasted like a Safeway seasoning packet.Waitress had a horrible attitude.Worst Mexican food I have ever had!Wouldn’t recommend this food to anyone,A dog wouldn’t eat it.Bill was over 30 dollars for worst service and food I’ve ever had. Also a ant was cruising along inside my food which I was willing to overlook until the food was horrible!
My friend and I ordered two VIRGIN blackberry margaritas. We are both lightweights and both have to drive. The older waitress brought our drinks out and because Im a little paranoid, I said these are virgin, right? Queue drama-fest.She never said virgin. Are you two underage? No, we just dont drink.Well she never said anything about virgin. Shes going to have to drink them both. She chewed the younger girl out right next to our table before stomping off and offering the drinks to another table so they wouldnt go to waste. When she returned with our VIRGIN margaritas, we said thank you and she huffed and walked away.We were hungry and wouldnt have made it to Ritas in time to order and eat before closing time, so we stayed. I ordered a small super nacho, my friend ordered the flautas combo. The food is the only reason they get an extra star. The servings were massive and everything was DELICIOUS.Fire the crabby old lady and this place might be a winner.
They have really good food here. I get margaritas all the time in different flavors on the rocks! The service is not the greatest, however. Depending on the waiter, theyre usually very nice and courteous. But few waiters take a while to check back on you. N sometimes the food can take a little while. But i wouldnt say not to go there, cuz I do enjoy it !
This is my go to for eating Mexican food. I have no idea what authentic or not authentic mexican food tastes like, I just think their food is decently priced and delicious. My toddler will literally scoop up their mild salsa and eat it by the spoonful if Im not careful, she loves this place so much.
First time in this restaurant as a to go order. Didn’t get a welcome or hello greeting. Got help from some lady who pretty much looked like she wanted to get me in and out. Ordered a carne asada quesadilla that looks and tastes like a quesadilla that you would buy from Taco Bell. Not coming back sorry not sorry!
Acceptable Mexican food at an affordable price. Spice blend on beef was very heavy on the cumin and light on pretty much everything else. Our meals were filling but left alot to be desired. Beers were cold but so were the chips, salsa served in syrup dispensers that didnt open wide enough to get the salsa out so youll have to be creative with the salsa. Cheese over our plates wasnt fully melted but it tasted fine. Wait staff was very prompt but that doesnt make this ok Mex resteraunt anything to look forward to.
This is one of my least favorite Mexican restaurants or rather Mexican American restaurants in Humboldt county just try the salsa thats dispensed from the syrup or that you would find at IHOP and youll know what Im talking about I feel like a good Mexican restaurant has good salsa fresh flavor all that this place doesnt and the couple times have eaten there the chips and salsa not to mention the multiple times they messed up my order anyway have a margarita and I bet youll give it five stars
Update: 4/7/2020Very disappointed. Order to go was nothing like it was before virus. Half the chips, half the beans, half the carnitas in the burrito, and a lot more rice. Ran out of taco Tuesday...Update: 2/2020 The carnitas were great tonight! So was the service.Dec 2019 Hasnt been that great latley.? Big hunks of fat in my meat.
I’m a big fan of Carmela’s both in McKinleyville and Arcata. I’ve been coming to them for years! They have a great selection of very tasty food, delicious margaritas, the staff are very friendly, and I like the atmosphere. A cool place to kick it at the bar even, and watch a game. Try the Mole or the Little Speciality Tacos (all meat types)! I definitely recommend Carmela’s!!

2022-01-02Three of us each got different burritos and we liked all of them. Even the simple things like the rice and beans were quite good. We agreed that the stand out was the mole sauce. The server was nice and they were happy to accommodate our small alterations to our orders. We just wish the weekday lunch prices carried into the weekend.

2022-02-26Not bad at all. I absolutely love Mexican food so I may be a bit biased. Several restaurants in the area are owned by relatives or former employees. They have very similar taste. There are a few exceptions. Im sure you will enjoy eating here!

2022-05-16Did they change the chef or something? I ordered tofu tacos and the tofu was so bland! My husband ordered chicken tacos, they were bland and the guacamole taste like plain avacado, it has to be the most bland Mexican food Ive ever had. They use to have great food. I dont know what has changed but its definitely not for the better.

2019-07-29Excellent veggie and vegetarian burritos - lots of grilled veggies and not too heavy feeling. The portions are huge and has good beer on drought, and the mole sauce (while spicy) is mega good. Recommend.
