Had the pleasure of being introduced to Buttonwood Farm Winery & Vineyard last week while hanging out in Santa Ynez Valley. By far my absolute favorite winery we visited. Not only is the wine top notch (90+ Wine Spectator is the norm here) and reasonably priced, but sommelier, Kate, and manager, Michelle, made our experience truly unforgettable. So many favorites about this vineyard, not the least of which was the tasting is served in mini-carafes which you can consume at your own pace. Stop by Bobs Well Bread in nearby Ballard for outrageously good breads, pastries and sandwiches and enjoy a picnic at Buttonwood. Truly the highlight of our trip!
Had a great time at Buttonwood Farm Winery & Vineyard recently while visiting the Santa Ynez Valley. Dropped in midweek and met sommelier, Kate, who was just delightful! Tastings were in small carafes which allows you to set your own pace (really a great idea), and beautiful surroundings abound, a great place to enjoy a picnic while you taste (also highly recommend Bobs Well Bread in nearby Ballard for supplies). The wines were exceptional (mostly rated 90+ by Wine Spectator), and very reasonably priced. We actually joined their Imbibers Club and cant wait for our first shipment next month. Thank you to both Kate, and manager, Michelle, for making our visits (twice in a week) so enjoyable and memorable!
A lovely estate that was a nice break from the crowds of downtown Los Olivos or Solvang. Plenty of space for you to take your tasting flight and seat yourselves at a picnic table or bench in the shady garden. It was so quiet even one of the dogs took a nap! They were only pouring one flight of 5 wines, but we thoroughly enjoyed all of them, and when we went to purchase our bottles the tasting room attendant was kind enough to pour some Pet Nat and Cabernet Franc as well so we could decide, both were great! They had a nice variety of Rhone and Bordeaux grapes, standouts were a Chardonnay that won over even me, who is not a Chardonnay drinker, and the Rose which was crisp perfection.
My mom and I came by on a Monday morning, and were seated in the lovely garden for wine tasting. There werent too many other people yet and there were plenty of places to sit that were at least six feet apart. We were blown away when we got around to the wine tasting. Every wine we tried was pleasamtly surprising and we enjoyed all of them. The lovely hostess even brought us a sparkling wine to taste as eell, and it too was awesome. Ill definitely join their membership when i can afford it.
I’ve been a member for 3 years now and every time I stop by I’m always warmly greeted, The staff goes above and beyond and they always pour so Generously! The wine is fantastic and the prices can’t be beat. The events are awesome, especially Wine under the stars. I love taking my friends and family here. ButtonwoodWinery is really that fabulous.
Very peaceful & relaxing place, except for our server who was rude. Nhe didnt share any insight to the wines & seemed bothered when we inquired about them. Kate came by and provided a windfall of information on the wines and was a delight. Especially liked the fruity white surprisingly, which had a version. With hops (hop on) which offered an earthy taste (for beer lovers perhaps). All four in our party didnt really like any of the other wines, especially the reds which was disappointing.
My girls and I did the all inclusive wine tour with visits to 3 vineyards. After visiting all 3 we went back to Buttonwood. The BEST sommelier (Kate was amazingly knowledgeable and just cute as a button!), The BEST wine (I have never enjoyed every taste at a winery AND I have never been a Chardonnay fan...until Buttonwood). Lastly, it was the most lovely and whimsical garden to enjoy it all! I can’t wait to come back!
A delightful property and superb wines. The Sauvignon Blancs (‘Signature’ SB and a touch of Semillon and ‘Zingy’ 100% SB) are excellent; fresh, crisp and clean, with nice fruit overtones. Grab a sandwich from a local deli and enjoy yourself on the spacious grounds behind the tasting room with a Buttonwood wine of your choice. “NO KIDS” policy (we love it) keeps us coming back for relaxing and most enjoyable visits. “Kate” in the tasting room is awesome and will take great care of you...Highly Recommended!!
Came by buttonwood to do a favor for a family friend and pick up her wine club shipment. Once we were there we figured we’d do a tasting since we had driven all that way. We were greeted by a rude hostess who was very short with us. We were promptly told our tastings wouldn’t be comped since we were not with the wine club member. We agreed and told her “that’s totally fine.” We then went back to the tasting window where we were poured our tasting. At that time we were never charged. Once we finished our tasting and bused our glasses - as we were walking out to the car, the rude hostess made sure to chase us out to the front to let us know that we weren’t charged for our tasting this time but we would DEFINITELY be charged next time we came. There will certainly not be a next time. Rude staff and the wine was terrible to boot!!
This was my third time visiting Buttonwood, and it remains one of my favorite wineries. The wine is varied, delicious and reasonably priced, especially for club members. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. I highly recommend wine lovers to stop for a tasting. Buttonwood is also a fantastic pace to bring a picnic because they have some tables and benches in a cute patio/garden.
I’ve been an imbiber club member for over 13 years and I believe they offer the best Rhône’s and Bordeaux’s in the area. The prices are reasonable for what you buy and the fact that they are a boutique winery makes their price points even more amazing. This is a family owned farm and all the staff make you feel like family. Bring your dogs as they are pet friendly, a picnic lunch and enjoy the gardens outside. Make sure you go see the baby goats and sheep in the back and ask the staff to tell you about the history of the winery and the farm.Well worth the visit!!!
Buttonwood has a lot of great things going for it: beautiful grounds, lots of space, affordable tastings (about $16 for a flight of five). Even so, I probably wouldnt return or recommend it to friends, only because the service is so-so and the wines werent our favorite. We had a couple different servers during our tasting, both who seemed hurried to pour without much context or information, despite the tasting area being relatively quiet. Not that I was looking for the ulta-wine enthusiast informational overload, but it was borderline curt. We still enjoyed walking around the farm and gardens, which are beautiful, but were otherwise not impressed with our time there. If you are visiting, feel free to bring your own picnic- they sell a limited amount of pre-packaged foods (crackers, cured meats, etc) but they also allow you bring in your own food : )
This place is usually nice, but, today we called ahead, and made sure they could serve us, drove out for a relaxing afternoon in the outdoor area, and got there to be told my kids (who always sit quietly at the table wherever we go) were not allowed to be on the property. When I asked why they made this choice, the person that came out to meet us at the front said it is just how they decided to reopen Ill never go back. Because of this rude response and the owner making the call to exclude younger people from accompanying families, they lost a fan of their wines. Because anyplace that doesnt welcome my whole family to sit outside, will never get my business.
This is an adorable winery and working farm. We had a 2 for 1 tasting coupon and received excellent service. The wines were good every day kind of wines, nothing that really wowed me. I did enjoy the Semi-Semi dessert wine. Be sure to enjoy your wine outside and take a stroll in their beautiful garden.
Nice little stop off of Alamo Pintado and a great setting. Well maintained and pretty grounds. Our tasting attendant was friendly and informative. The wines however werent great, especially when theyre asking $10-15 per flight. That is inline with other tasting rooms in the area, however the wine here I dont think Id put in the same class as most of them. We enjoyed a couple of their wines though. They seem to have a different style of making wine, which I can respect. Their Musque Sauvignon Blanc was a really nice take on an SB. The only other wine that stood out to my wife and I was the Cabernet Franc, which was a nice dark red but not too heavy. The other wines we tried were nothing to write home about. Usually we buy at least a couple bottles, but we couldnt bring ourselves to buy any here. We may stop here again when we are biking through since they have a nice garden and bike friendly parking.
Best Winery!! Love their Rose...we buy the cases...we are members here...and love all they offer to their club members...grounds are so inviting and green..great place for a family...enjoy a bottle of wine or a glass while your kids can play...and their peaches are awesome...this is also a farm...you can see at times from afar the animals grazing on the hillside..so beautiful...go when everything is in full bloom...
Simply a great place to visit if you had a bad experience its because you probably shouldnt be out trying to wine taste..you should be on your couch drinking a Bud lite Im sure thats more your lame style..Anyways!.. I am a wine club member ,Beautiful grounds,Wines are excellent especially their Syrah Rose`..great events, and really generous on their prices. My wife and I always and I mean always have a good time when we go which is quite often thru the year.. try it out and go at a leasurely pace. Why rush your in beautiful country, go wih some friends, take a picnic ,chill and get a little happy!
Chincy (I mean very chincy) tastes for $10 and $15 for the reserve. Not conspicuously great wines and all bottles very expensive. Nice place to have lunch though. Attitude was a bit stuffy too. We have no reason to return. Too many other places that are nicer, more welcoming and generous.

2021-12-28My wife and I went to buttonwood as one of our stops on our anniversary trip and loved it. It was a super personal experience, being served by Kate (she is a wonderful sommelier and great for local recommendations) as well as the grounds being a gorgeous backdrop. It was actually raining while we were there, which was just perfect with the heated open patio. This is the best type of winery and vineyard. I would recommend this tasting to anyone. I went to 3 tasting rooms and 2 vineyards on our trip and this was one of 2 places that I actually bought bottles from.

2022-01-13My fiance took me here for my birthday and was by far my favorite winery. Truth be told, I am limited in knowledge that comes with the experience in regards to taste. To me the wines tasted great we even bought a couple of bottles to take home. Nonetheless, we felt at home at this winery. The staff was friendly and a pleasure to have conversation. I will go back without a doubt!

2022-02-10Simply outstanding! We visited on a midweek day, stopping in route on a trip further north. We’ve visited before, and have always had the pleasure of being served by tasting room associate Cate Allen. We had in fact called ahead to ensure Cate was working this visit. We visited specifically to see her, enjoy her service, and let her arrange our long overdue joining the Buttonwood wine club. Cate is the perfect ambassador for Buttonwood’s wines. Even more, she has sommelier level knowledge, a perfect match for our own wine curiosity. The wines are superb. Balanced, sublime, exceptionally food friendly. The tasting area setting is serene. Our absolute favorite spot in all of the Santa Barbara tasting venues, thanks to Cate and the magical wines.

2022-06-26Five starts because the staff is amazing. Except for the guy in the glasses who was rude to the rest of my group. Jerry took very good care of us and explained with so much detail all the wines we tasted. The wines themselves are so good! The setting is so beautiful and you can bring food for a picnic. I highly recommend this place.

2017-07-30Very good wine and service. Nice selection of white and red wines. I chose the Cuvee (red) which my husband and I very much enjoyed. We had been told in advance that there was no food available for purchase but that we could bring in our own food and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Nothing better than wine & cheese, outside on a beautiful day. Michelle and Bonnie were great hosts. We tried the wine flights before choosing our favorite (which was hard to pick because they were all good). The outdoor patio areas has a covered area with picnic tables and other tables and benches located under the shady trees. There is a peach orchard which surrounds the winery. Highly recommend stopping by for a tasting.

2021-03-053/4/2021We became members of Buttonwood Farm Winery last September and visited for a second time this week (joining another couple who had joined with us and a separate couple who became members this week). As with our first experience, we could not be more pleased. Not only do we enjoy the wine (and find that it is priced quite reasonably), but they are more than happy to bring you wines to sample, beyond the normal amount, if you have a particular preference or if they sense that theres a certain wine that you would enjoy.Additionally, the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. On this weeks visit, we were assisted by Kate who was not only extremely knowledgeable about wine, but also was incredibly engaging. By the end of our visit, we all felt we had spent time with an old friend. This was very similar to our experience last Fall with, if memory serves, Michelle. On both occasions, we brought lunch and picnicked on their patio which was a wonderful way to spend an hour or so with good food and outstanding wine. There are nearly 150 wineries in the Santa Ynez Valley and, no doubt, there are many others that also offer good wine and service, but it would be a shame to visit the area and not drop into Buttonwood.

2021-10-24Occasional and sparse reviewer here, but WOW was this place scenic (in that nice & quiet way) and the wine experience was even more exceptional! Chad was such a humble and knowledgeable host as we were seated promptly for our tastings. Walked away with a Rose bottle that both the Lady and Myself couldnt help but take home. Cheers Buttonwood!

2021-07-22We visited Buttonwood on two successive midweek days. Tasting room associate Cate was a delight both times. Her service, the quality of the wines, and the pure peace and blissful charm of Buttonwood’s patio seating tasting area made for one of the best wine visits we have ever had. The seating area is away from all road noise and looks out over a magical garden area that oozes calm. Our first experience on day one made us realize, while we were out on our second day, that no one could match Buttonwood after we aborted several stops at other wineries where stretch limos, wine tour buses, and uncontrolled children running amok were clearly not for us. Buttonwood has a strict over 21 policy. We strongly support that in wine tasting venues. Kudos to Buttonwood to adopting this most sensible rule. Oh, and lest I did not make it clear, the wines are outstanding! And very reasonably priced.
