Very cute place. Entrance gate overlooks the bay and you can see the bridge. You go in and there is an amphitheater of roses with a small water feature at the bottom. One “side” of the garden has some courts for tennis/badminton (not sure) that are first come first serve. The other side has dirt paths and trees with a wooden bridge. Entry is free, but i’m not sure about parking. The bus runs right by, though. Also, there are so many insects!!
A gorgeous garden in the heart of Berkeley. As soon as you enter the garden, you are surrounded by hundreds of roses. Each rose bush section has unique colors which makes you feel like you are in a fantasy. The theater-like design allows for a perfect view of the entire garden.
Beautiful park even late in the year, still some blooms here and there but more sporadic. There is some construction going on but there is plenty of space to walk around and smell the Roses. Beautiful view for sunset and lovely view of the bridge in the distance. Great time !!
Back in the old days a street car trestle crossed the little canyon where the street now is. Folks back then would take the stairs between the streets to get to this trolley line and some of those stairs still exist. The rose garden was installed. I think the garden was installed during the depression as a WPA work project and it is a beautiful, peaceful place worthy of a visit.
Berkeley Rose Garden is a beautiful and serene place with many pros:*It has a wide variety of flowers: dozens and dozens of different kinds of roses named on little placards, in many different colors.*You can smell the roses (hey, its a great way to live the expression, Stop and smell the roses) upon first walking up to the entrance gate*Since its in Berkeley Hills, you can see a lovely sunset in the evening with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the bay...I see people stopping and waiting for sunset at the top on the sidewalk almost every evening Ive been there.*It has a little creek and a hilly area with a tree kids can climb.*Good for various weather: most of the garden gets full sunlight, but there are shaded spots in the hilly area with many trees and little trails further up away from the roses*You can play tennis at the tennis court right in the garden.*Its across the street from Codornices Park, making for a nice day if you visit both.*Parking is free on both sides of the street.*It has restrooms with flushable toilets and sinks with soap and water.Cons:*It can be very busy with people doing graduation photos near the end of the school year, so plan accordingly.*Sometimes parking is hard to find right in front of the garden, but most times I get a spot right away.*Some roses missing the placards that have their names*It might be nice to have more benches around the garden, but you can simply cross the street and visit Codornices Park to sit or have a picnic.
The Rose Garden is almost always a go-to haven for beautiful flowers and relaxation. Right now part of it is being renovated so access isnt full, but Im sure the renovations are worth waiting for. Havent been yet? Go in Autumn for the best blooms and East Bay sunshine. You wont be disappointed!
Beautiful during the peak rise season. Lots of people, like wedding groups, come to take pictures here. It’s free but can be hard to find street parking nearby. Here you can also catch some great views of the bay. Not wheelchair accessible to go down but views from street level are still impressive.
Entry is expensive if youre a couple ($24 for two people), but the garden itself is incredible. Such a unique thing to see such plant diversity in a small space.Come with a snack + water, good shoes, and lots of energy. Youll easily put miles on your feet wandering around. Cute little gift shop where you can pick up some unique plants for your personal garden as well.Definitely worth the visit.
A nice girl from store recommend to visit rose garden and I went it was nice. It is quite small but the walk up to is very pleasant. Bring a book spend a afternoon with sun and the sweet smell of rose, 🌹 what can be better?Location: Located north of downtown Berkeley, 30 min walk from downtown Berkeley BAR station.
A bit of a walk from the Berkeley campus, but worth every step! I would think that the best time to visit is late spring or early summer when all of the roses are in bloom. Its not very easily accessible to those with mobility issues, but there is a viewing area at the top that would be suitable for all to enjoy. Everything is labeled, making it easy for gardeners to find new rose varieties to add to their home. A must see if visiting Berkeley!
Always a lovely place to visit whether the roses are blooming or not! Beautiful bay and Golden Gate Bridge views...some go just to view the sunsets. Benches for relaxing and lingering. Tennis courts and Codornices Park (great for kids and picnics!)across the street, accessible also by short pedestrian tunnel. A long time go to place in Berkeley hills. Good to walk up to from No. Berk.
It was a beautiful warm summers day to venture out to Berkeley in the late afternoon to check out the Rose Gardens. Honestly, I didnt know what to expect, I had heard parking would be a little difficult because there isnt a designated parking lot. But I didnt experience much difficulty, it just took a little bit of patience and a bit of driving slower, in search of a parking space. Parking is completely free and so is the Rose Garden. The garden wasnt too crowded, but there were plenty of people walking, sitting and admiring the flowers. There are plenty of benches along the perimeter of the many of the flower beds and there are tennis courts off to the side of the garden, which I thought was a little random.Currently the roses are in full bloom and theyre beautiful. Besides them being in their flower beds, they are in full view and capable of being photographed at several different angles. Like the Plant Tour I took last weekend at Tilden, there are small signs near the roses telling you what roses you are viewing. There are stone steps to the garden and another set of stairs towards more beds of roses. Be careful when going down the stairs, they are pretty steep and they are high steps. While the rose garden is a beautiful and peaceful place to be, I dont know how soon I will be returning, like I said its not a very large garden, i was able to see the entire garden area in about an hour.On a warmer less windy day, it could serve as a nice peaceful place to chill, relax, read or write. Its a nice leisure place to experience.
An amazing rose garden up in the Berkeley Hills. There are many various rose types and multiple color variations. Try to find the rose color you think is the most intetesting or beautiful. At the top of the rose garden you can see out over a portion of the SF Bay on a clear day.
Fabulous gem of a garden with huge array of roses in an amphitheater-like setting offering panoramic views of the SF bay and Mt Tamalpais. Built by the WPA in 1937, connects to Codornices Park through an under-street tunnel. Lovely anytime of year but truly spectacular in May-June at the peak of the blooming season.Giant Sequoias line the path to the tunnel. Go through the tunnel to access Codornices Park and treat yourself to a walk though the redwoods along Codornices Creek. At the top of the park there is a little grove of meta sequoias (dawn redwoods). This is one of the spots in Berkeley you can see all three types of Sequoias in one place. (Faculty Glade on the UC Berkeley campus is another).
Great spot to stop by and do a variety of things. I see many people read, draw, work on their laptops, and also just hanging out with friends or family. Blooming season is absolutely gorgeous, but its actually pretty nice regardless of what time of year. It can get very hot during the summer if you go between 11am and 2 PM so bring a hat or umbrella!
The rose garden was very beautiful. We walked up here from downtown Berkeley and it was a bit of a hike but worth it. One thing was that in some places smelled like garbage. They need to do a better job of managing that. But it was a great place to go if you like looking at flowers.
Wonderful spot for strolling and taking in the scene. But its in bad need of repair. Thankfully a renovation project is underway, though it may take a couple years to complete. Once completed, it will warrant five stars. (2017)EDIT: The trellis has been fully renovated, and the garden looks spectacular. Five stars. (2022)
A beautiful garden with roses in bloom most months of the year. The plants are well maintained and gardeners are constantly working on them around the clock. As of April 19 the garden is still under construction, so half of the garden is inaccessible, but the other regions are more than enough if a reason to show up!
A nice garden situated on a hillside. Because of covid, some of the entrances are closed.Due to the fact that the garden is on a hillside and 🦌, the garden is corden off with heavy non-automatic doors and full of stairs which makes it super unfriendly for folks with disabilities.Parking is street parking only. The garden also has a tennis court, public bathroom, and several picnic tables. As far as the roses, it was not the most impressive rose garden with limited varieties. The amount of roses was also underwhelming. The location itself is challenging and the garden makes good use of the land its on and tried to pack in as much roses as possible. The result is that the garden felt a bit cramped. The walkways are pretty narrow between the rose patches. (Not possible for social distancing) BUT it is free and its in the middle of Berkeley, given all the constrains, I am giving it a 5-star for the effort.
Love the Berkeley Marina! My wife and I visited today and we brought lunch from home. It was a beautiful, sunny and slightly breezy day! We enjoyed our furry visitors (not sure if they are a species of the squirrel family) but we made 4 new furry friends who LOVED mixed nuts! Plenty of parking!
The Berkeley Rose Garden is quite nice! It seems like the roses bloom from at least April through... the fall? Im not sure, but they have quite a variety and some truly gorgeous and unique plants. Its good for a quick visit--definitely dont plan to spend more than an hour at most there.Note, it is on a pretty steep hill, so keep that in mind if you have any mobility issues.
Always a magical place to visit. The exploring of the place, the magnificent views, the park accross the street are rare to find in a city anywhere. It didnt get 5 stars because they are rebuilding the main pergola, resurfacing the tennis courts and providing better access. Im sure that after the wirks are concluded it will shine even brighter.
A nice quiet place to enjoy and relax. Climb the stairs, explore, look at the creek. And try to identify the many different types of roses. There is a gate around the whole garden. So its fun to explore the whole grounds. When I visited the tennis courts where closed for construction. When they are open, the courts are a nice neighbor too either watch or to play afterwards.
Very beautiful spot in the bay. The garden terrace looks like it was always there. Its currently going through some maintenance on two of the upper terraces. You can still get to the lower terraces by following the dirt path that is to the left if you are facing the bay. Its much safer than jumping the construction fence.
We love the Rose Garden! It’s a place we frequent often . Taking the kids and the dog along for a family friendly place to spend time together. We love the parks here. The tennis courts. Of course the Rose Garden, and the sunsets from here are some of the best I’ve seen on the West Coast with uninterrupted views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Area! Highly recommend this place for anyone and everyone!
We were fortunate enough to visit this lovely garden in mid-May when most of the spectacular roses were in bloom. RThere is a very wide variety and many of the blooms are colossal. Breathing in the fragrance around you is a treat, as is marveling at the many colors. The spot is gorgeous, with rose bushes set along paths that wind down a hillside. It is steep and not appropriate for the disabled or small children. The view is incredible, and the attraction is free. You will have to find parking on the street which could be a bit challenging. During the Spring, free concerts are held on Sunday afternoons
The rose garden is situated within the residential area, opposite to a park. There is no entry fee and it seemed like an open garden. There is no separate parking area but you can park in the streets. The garden is in an open stage plan area. There are different kind of roses throughout and benches for resting and spending time. Looked like a perfect place to spend a quite romantic evening.
The rose garden is easily accessible by car as there is generally a lot of free parking nearby. Plenty of seating within the garden, though the walkway maybe too steep for those with wheelchairs or impaired mobility. Best time to go is late spring or early summer. There is also a small vantage where you can see the bay and lower Berkeley from the hill.
Great place to come alone or with friends and family. There are beautiful views of the bay, a small stream, trees, and of course, roses (depending on the season). The sunset over the water with the trees and garden in the foreground is worth the drive or walk from elsewhere in Berkeley.
Nice garden nestled in the hillside with some pretty incredible views of the city. The roses all have placards identifying the individual varietal, which was nice to see. The garden was a bit unkempt, but no worries there. Overall a nice place for a quick visit. When we visited, parking was free and plentiful, but your mileage my vary.
Such a beautiful selection of roses. Well kept garden. There was some construction, but now its clear. Best time is late spring, early summer, but there are always some roses in bloom throughout the year. Great view of the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance from the top.
Awesome place, different varieties of roses color shape and size. Great place to take pictures but plan to go there in the evening or morning. You also get a good view of the bay, from the top. Nearest hiking destination is Indian Rock garden of you plan to visit. Also you can volunteer at Rose garden at ten am Tuesdays and Fridays.
A November visit is certainly not optimum for roses in bloom but the view of the bay is very nice. We enjoyed the solitude of our morning visit in this restful place. We hiked up Euclid from the UC campus and got a hilly workout for our effort. If you stroll onto Scenic Drive after leaving the Gardens, you will delight in the views as well. Look for the large elephant sculpture at the end of the street hidden in a side yard!
I love, love, love this place !The view is gorgeous, you can see very far ! You can seat on a bench and dream for hours. There are many different varieties of roses, all of them so beautiful. There’s a tennis court adjacent to the garden and a little tunnel to go to cordonices Park (park & playground).
This public rose garden is a must see at least once. It does have a fair amount of up hill/down hill walking (just like the rest of Berkeley). Its placed as shelves in the side of a hill, so expect lots of stairs. Expansive collection of flowering roses. There are just a few benches for rest. The roses with scent seem to be concentrated on the first few levels near the top, which is nice to save the scent seekers a few steps. Access is totally free, however parking might be difficult as it has no dedicated parking lot.
Its an enjoyable experience every time I go when the roses are in bloom. They are clearly labeled for the most part, and its fun to walk through and get a whiff of the different varieties there. Its well maintained, even despite the drought. But roses are drought tolerant anyway. There are some areas closed off due to reconstruction. Not sure when it will be completed. Its a challenge to keep it out of pictures somewhat.Parking is available on the street wherever you can find it. Signs advise to keep valuables out of view. Apparently its a high risk area despite the presence of this beautiful garden.
Great for people who love flowers. Good for a walk from Shattuck and nearby areas. Dogs not allowed in the park. (But theres a dog friendly patch right opposite the garden in case you decide to walk there with your dog).I think visit during spring is the best of all seasons.
This lovely rose garden is in an unusual, very beautiful setting. Its located in a large, natural bowl. The bowl has been terraced, so there are about eight levels of plantings. The gardens are spotlessly clean, the roses are well-labeled, and there are many benches.
This garden is very useful for families outing. Lot of facilities are available. For children they can play different games. for families barbeque facilities are there.Large forest like area is there for walking Wash room and drinking water is available. sunny day this place is very good
Was driving by the Berkeley Rose Garden. Had to stop for the gorgeous view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Since it is winter, there arent many flowers in bloom. However, it is still a beautiful place to stop and enjoy the scenery and smell the roses.. There were many families and joggers nearby. Take the time to enjoy what mother nature has to offer.
Hear the sounds of running water and birds among the smell of gardening. Kids play at the park behind you so you feel a sense of community as well. One of the first places I visited on my first time in Berkeley. I have seen it in summer and spring now and it is nice to see the work that goes into preparing the blooms.
This is a great place to visit and get some R&R in. I came here last week and was impressed by all of the wonderful roses. They also have a nice park on the other side of the street which is great for kids. The day I came I took the bus and it is a bit of a hike to get up the hills. If you do take the bus you will not need to go to the gym. I can not express how beautiful it was and the surrounding neighborhood. I would definitely be going back.Street parking onlyFreeClean bathrooms located outsideNice area for eatingTennis courts located next to the garden.Use the tunnel to get across the street with out having to cross on top.Park across the street is great for kids to run and play with a basketball court.
I was surprised that any city has a park like this. There are probably 40-50 different types of rose here, all labeled. At the right time of year, it smells beautifully of fresh roses and comes alive with color. There are also nicer public restrooms available. An awesome neighborhood gem
This is one nice place to be in. I am a fan of this place , this garden is locted in Berkeley hill area and if you have kid 3 and over, they will love it. It can be viewed as a maze with numerous types of roses. When you walk down the steps, there is a small creek flowing and a tiny bridge. From the top of the garden, you can view of bay Nd golden gate bridge too. Across the street is a park for kids and a basketball court too. Be there znd enjoy!
An extremely beautiful place with not only a beautifully vast array of roses but also an extraordinary view of Berkeley from the top entrance of the rose garden & tranquil little creek at the gardens base. Highly recommend especially if on a first date & trying to impress via a different approach, away from the usual dinner, movie, club, bar etc type of thing.
Its sunny, so bring a parasol. Many of the roses have tags so you can find them and plant em for your own garden if you like. Usually there are multiple plants too so you can get a good idea of the varuation and habit of the plant. Right now is maybe peak season for the garden. Right across from cordonices park, which has lots of parky things like picnic tables, etc..
Theres tennis courts (no clue how you schedule them) and a public restroom. The roses are behind a fence. According to the sign, hours are Dawn to DuskTheres no parking lot, just street parking, and the street goes right through the park. One half is a normal park with a kids activity area/climbing gym, and across the road, and down a reasonably steep (definitely not wheelchair safe) paved pathway is the entrance to the amphitheatre shaped garden with over 100 varieties of roses.Theres ample benches, the smell is amazing, and it looks like heaven on earth. Also theres a pokestop a poke gym there, but aside from us, nobody else apparently was willing to walk that far from the road. 100% worth it
Gorgeous, just gorgeous! Great place for a wedding or just to get your groove back. Stunning roses and arbors with a spectacular view of the bay and some of its islands and bridges. Right across the street from Codornices Park. No off-street parking is available and on-street parking is minimal.
My favorite spot to go and chill in North Berkeley. The entrance is free and you can come and go as many times as you want, strolling in the beautiful garden and smelling all the roses. Highly recommended to go back a few times to see the different roses that bloom each season
Beautiful gardens, built into a natural amphitheater in the hillside. The garden was designed and laid out by the WPA in the 30s, and even today, it remains as wonderful as ever. Incredible variety and number of rose bushes, with the best displays starting around February. It also offers great views across Berkeley to the bay.
Beautiful location. Great place to hang out and chat with a friend. There are also a couple of geocaches nearby if you do those. This would be a nice place to hang out and read/study if you go to school at GTU or Cal. Also, the bus from downtown BART goes directly to it up Euclid, so no matter where you are along that route, you can quickly get there.
A stunning variety of roses, layered in terraces descending from the street level to the bottom of the bowl. Apart from sniffing and relishing the flowers in other ways, you can take in the Bay views or catch up on your stairmaster routine. The garden is nested in the beautiful North Berkeley neighborhood, perfect for a challenging walk in the hills. The Codornices Park across the street is good for a barbecue and a game of softball.
One of my favorite gardens in the Bay Area. Oakland and Marin both have beautiful options for a little nature in the city, but Berkeley takes the cake.Best panoramic view of Berkeley at sunset, and nicest kept garden by the city. Serene and sweet, this spot has tennis courts, benches, creeks, and Tilden across the way to boot.GREAT for picnics (although no food inside the garden) across the street.Go here to relax, reboot, escape, and become a bit with nature.I genuinely appreciate Berkeley more for this spot than any other place in the city.Con: the restroom needs a little renovation. The tap does not work well.

2022-05-19What a fantastic spot to visit! Beautiful terraced plant beds chock full of roses. Really appreciated all of the signs denoting the types and loved that multiples of each type were planted together. Such an impact! Also liked how the colors in the amphitheater part looked like they transitioned from dark to light from the top down and in from the sides. Stunning! Also liked the winding trails, but wish they didnt lead to locked gates. But that just gave us more time to visit. Spectacular!

2022-05-22In bloom & looking beautiful! Some of these roses were bigger than my open hand! They have so many different colors & types! They even had the rainbow sorbet & sugar moon roses! Hurry before the petals fall!

2022-07-03Very nice, and free, rose garden especially in the late spring. You could smell the roses when arriving there. It is relatively small but the view and the garden are worth the trip.

2021-10-22A beautiful spot to visit during early July. Some roses no longer existed by their plaques while some were unnamed. Fortunately, I was able take photos of some spectacular ephemeral blooms.A 30 minute slow walk down the rows of roses was all it took.Slightly unkept, and I suspect that it might be from crowds of people that visit.

2021-08-21Its a beautiful place to visit - and I would probably suggest looking for peak season to visit if possible. There werent roses in every bush but there were still many roses in bloom when I had visited. A lot of roses that had their unique smell so give them a sniff if you like floral scents! There are many bees polluting.

2021-06-07Facing the sunset on a terraced hillside, this rose garden is a romantic place to watch sunset and bay view. With thousands roses around, you can also enjoy a moment sitting on the lovers benches, wandering along the pergola arc once its completed, or stopped on the short wooden bridge. You can also see the golden light sheering through a tree house just above the fences of the park at sunset hours. Snack tables are present. They are also used for group discussion and study. Public restroom in the garden is in disguise rounded with flower wines. The garden has easy access with street parking. There is a tunnel for you to reach to the tennis courts.
