We had a 830 pick up time and waited 25 minutes for the guy to come back from his snack break to three groups waiting to check in. The phone also just sits in there ringing. Calling the national number is also a 20+ minute hold. If you’re going to take a 20 plus minute break, you should get another staff member. We then ran late for our first meeting of the day because of his break 20 minutes into his shift.
Pick up experience is great. Drop off experience was terrible at the downtown location. No one at the location and no one answering the phone. Even at the customer service line. The staff at the San Diego Airport were great to resolve the drop off substitution. Especially Patty and Lauren. They were quick Friendly and knowledgeable. When in doubt stick to the airport pick up and drop off locations.
I read a lot of negative reviews before deciding to take a chance due to the huge price difference with other rental agencies. I personally had a great experience. I arrived around 10 am on Friday September 3rd and the first thing I noticed was how busy it was and they only had 1 staff member. What made the experience great was that staff member, I wish Id gotten his name. He was apologetic to everyone waiting in line, doing his best to answer questions while helping the person on front of him. He was running to get the cars and bring them up front. Anyway, I have nothing negative to say and am glad I chose to rent from this location. If the owner continues to hire employees like the one I dealt with I would highly recommend this place to anyone
Worst customer service ever. Very unprofessional staff. I was given a quote when I made a reservation and that included the insurance and they would not honor it neither the car that was supposed to be reserved. I waisted my time to get there only to be told BS. On top of that they were careless and they just told me to call customer service in a very rude way. Neither customer service helped me at all. Never again Avis!
My husband and I had a reservation to pick up our car at 9am. We booked the car through Costco Travel before traveling. The location was awesome because we were staying downtown and just needed a car for one day to host our dear friends on a road trip to the desert. When we arrived this morning we were told that our car was not available. No cars were available. The Avis representative working the desk suggested that we “go to the airport and get a car.” No further assistance was extended in spite of having a confirmed reservation. Our plans for the day have been significantly delayed and we feel responsible for inconveniencing our friends. The entire situation is embarrassing and has become much more expensive than anticipated. Please be wary of placing your trust in this Avis location. We have been deeply disappointed.
Had a terrible experience with a last minute rental. Agent couldnt have cared less about helping us and then on top of that was told that I had to have the insurance charges in order to get the rate that I was given, which was a lie. This in fact doubled the rate. They close early and we were given a rude answer when asked about other options. Would not recommend.
I did not get the vehicle I reserved. What is the purpose of a reservation if you cannot honor the reservation. I dropped the keys off fifteen minutes after the location closed and was charged both a late fee and a second day of rental. I can perhaps understand the late fee, however, I do not understand the charge for the second day as the vehicle could have been and probably was rented the next day. I tried to call customer service but was put on hold for over twenty minutes before the call was just dropped.
This Avis office has two strong attractions: It is within walking distance of many downtown San Diego hotels, and the cost of renting a car from here rather than the airport is at least $100/week cheaper. If you are a patient person and not on a schedule (such as getting to a meeting after picking your car up or needing to catch a flight after you drop it off), it is a reasonable choice. The staff we met were helpful and friendly, and the the car was excellent in every way.However, the office appears to be minimally staffed and may be closed and locked when you arrive to pick up or drop off your car. In our case, we arrived to return the rental shortly after the office was supposed to open on weekdays, 8 am, and found the doors locked. The telephone was not answered, and nobody had appeared by 8:35 when, in a panic, we gave up and race to the airport. I have since been told by friends who have used the office that it is not uncommon to wait 30 minutes for someone to open up during business hours.That Avis return at the airport was not staffed either so we left the keys in the ignition and ran for the shuttle. When we looked our receipt up online, Avis had charged us $75 for a one-way rental plus $60 to refuel the car, even though we returned it with the same fuel level it was rented with, as our contract instructed. Avis National did reverse these charges upon protest, but reaching customer service and filing a dispute took another two hours of time. Altogether, renting from this office added about three hours of pure headaches to the rental-car experience.We have since heard from others who have used this office that our experience finding it unstaffed is not uncommon. For those who are not on a schedule, the convenience and economy of renting off-airport at this office in downtown San Diego may still make it a reasonable choice. I cannot recommend it to anyone on a schedule, especially a flight.
Will never rent from Budget and Avis again. Was never told this location has special hours. Closed at 4pm. Took car back after refueling car at 4.20pm. Store was closed. No drop off box or drop off instructions for after hour drop off. Had to drop car off at airport / 10 minutes away. Was charged $300. Vehicle was delivered to me uncleaned. My statement stated I had a full tank of gas but actually 80% full. Had to pay a gas fee of $44 even though I returned vehicle back with the same amount of gas I accepted it at first. Terrible service from saleman to customer service.
DO NOT RENT FROM HERE!Save your time and frustration and just rent from Avis at the San Diego Airport (SAN)!We arrived shortly after 10am for our car pickup (which was scheduled for 10) and given a dirty (on the inside and out) car when we had reserved an SUV.The attendant didn’t even ask if we were okay with a car instead of an SUV and I had to pull up our reservation to show him that we had reserved a different vehicle. They expected me to pay the SUV price for a disgusting car. The owner or manager was called over and he said, “That’s the only car we have!”We were told to come back later or that we could go to the airport and see what cars they had available. We ended up going to the airport and getting a much nicer vehicle (and a complimentary upgrade for our trouble).This rental spot is a total joke and a waste of time.(ALSO - I’d almost guarantee that most of these 5-star reviews are fake and paid for. Pay attention to the 1-star reviews. They are legitimate.)
The vehicle I rented had a mechanical issue that I did not discover until I drove home from work. I called, he answered the phone and said I can take to the nearest office and swap it out. It was a painless experience that took no time at all. I can say that they took care of me.
Worst Avis branch I have ever dealt with! On picking up our car the agent didn’t even say hello and then proceeded to rush us through the paperwork without explaining the contract. Worst of all he then added additional costly insurance onto the car without asking us. We then had to make several long and complicated phone calls on our holiday to try to reverse the charges. Avoid this branch at all costs.
I tried to rent a car at another Avis location in Downtown San Diego but they did not have a vehicle to rent so they contacted this Avis location several blocks away at 640 Broadway to ask if they had a car available. They said they did so a reservation was made. The Avis location we were at had the Avis location at 640 Broadway on the phone and told them we were on our way to pick it up. We arrived 2 minutes after their posted close time and the location was indeed closed and nobody was there. They knew we were on our way and they had my phone number in the reservation but did not make the effort to call and ask if we were almost there. This is not the type of customer service that I would have expected from an Avis location. Other Avis locations have been great but this place clearly does not care about their customers. I would avoid this location if at all possible, as there are much better Avis location to rent from in San Diego.
I made a reservation in advance, and prepaid. Reserved a certain type of vehicle. Upon arrival, we’re told there are no vehicles available. But we were offered to drive to the San Diego airport where our vehicle would be at the front of the line and waiting for us. Miguel told us he would call ahead and arrange the whole thing. so with a 15 minute drive to the airport we learned that he has not called ahead and they are not expecting us at all. Avis airport personnel have no idea what we are talking aboutVery disappointed with the Avis experience with this location, we would never rent a vehicle here ever again. We wasted a solid hour and a half which was taken away from our vacation.Zero customer service and a complete lack of caring
I have rented from them once a few months back and now have never looked back and I will ONLY rent there! The cars are very cheap and high quality. The Company and staff are very trustworthy and helpful and very friendly. The pick up and drop off are extremely easy. Everything runs very smooth!
They gave us a dirty car, trash all over. I will post the pictures once I find them. I didn’t see it right away because it was at the back seat. And the car was not working properly. I think it was rude for them to give it to us in that condition. We ended up returning the car at the Airport and exchanging it. They reduced the price of rent, but it was a hassle and waisted time. Don’t rent car from this spot, just rent from the Airport.
Gas tank was half full when we received the car. The windshield was wet from soap and water.... on the inside. By the time I got the car home to load up, the water had dried and left dirty streak marks on the inside. The cup holders were full of bits of dirt and food crumbs that tend to collect over time (how long has it been since this car was properly cleaned?). The plastic parts around the shifter werent properly attached, and would lift up and bounce around while on the freeway. Additional, they dont allow you to drop the keys off outside of their work hours. Im not a frequent rental car user, but Ive never had a rental place NOT have a drop box for after-hour returns.
They called day before my car was due bugging me about why it wasnt back yet. When i actually did return, had to wait 30 min past opening time for someone to show up and open the office.They also were supposed to arrange reimbursement from Geico but charged my card anyway and left me to deal with it.
We had a very bad experience picking up the car. The car was not ready when we arrived. The person at the counter said he was trying to find a car and if we could wait. Fair enough. After waiting for about 15 mins he said he needed to go pick up the car some place off-site and that we have to leave because he needs to lock up the place as he is the only one there. Okaaaaay. Note that the place had already been open for an hour by now. He said he will be back in 20-30 mins. We strolled around and came back after 30 mins. No sign of the guy. After another 10 mins had elapsed, I called the number the guy had left on the door to ask how much longer was he gonna be. His answer - I am on my way and I will be there soon. Maybe he hit some morning rush hour traffic, I say to myself ... Ill give a second chance. Another 10 mins elapse. I call the same number again. His answer - I already told you I will be there soon and he slams the phone before I can ask him to give me a time estimate. That was just very rude! At this point, we have been waiting for about 50 mins (30 mins of strolling + 20 mins outside the door). About 15 mins later, some other guy shows up, says he has our car and opens up the place. I say to him - we have been waiting for over an hour ... the other guy said he will be back in 30 mins. This guys response - well, its better than having no car. WHAT??!! This was a complete disaster from a customer service, experience and basic courtesy perspective. I expected better from Avis.
This place was more than awesome, they were out of cars on Sunday sadly, came back next day and he said sorry all they have is a mustang convertible!!! could bot believe it and gave it to us for economy car priceIt totally made our last full day in San Diego a memorable one!!Thanks so much!!
I returned the car from my Salt Lake city trip. The front desk was not friendly n attentive. He was on the phone with the earphone. He just asked whether I filled up the gas tank & give me the car key. Thats all! Fyi, its hard to know excatly where to drop off the car to this location. I had to park on the red-mark pavement at the corner.
We had the most AMAZING customer service at this location. The representatives name is Ziad (not positive on the spelling) and he went out of his way to help us. This included giving us alternate rental options, parking our rental car, and suggesting things to do. Thank you Ziad for being genuine, kind, and patient. I will always rent from Avis going forward if I encounter people like Ziad going forward!!
WONT EVER GO BACK THERE ! Very bad experience with the manager that does lot know how to explain the return policy on a Sunday. The car was DIRTYYYY and th manager did not even come with us to check the gas and the condition of the car.He made many mistakes and never excuse himself, very bad costumer service !!!
This Car Rental is a Joke! We went there to reserve a Jeep two days before, than we went there to pick up the car and the man told us he dont have anymore the jeep we have reserved. So why should we do a reservation when we didnt get the car we want?! And he wasnt able to say sorry for that!
I rented with a rate that included the first tank of gasoline, I have the written receipt; and when I received the car they did not make me valid that promotion. In addition, more than 8 days have passed since the car was returned and they still have not paid the deposit, which was 250 dollars.
The office made a rundown impression, and the clerk was unprofessional. The vehicle was handed over without a proper handover. It was dirty and smelled of vomit. Even a replacement vehicle was dirty and the track moved to the right, the front wheels had an imbalance. The unfriendly employee is not suitable for this job.

2022-04-08Good location and easy to find. Customer service was quick and efficient, I was in and out within 10 minutes. Vehicle was in good condition and no maintenance lights, which I know is a low bar but Ive had horrible experiences with other rental places. Return was quick and efficient, once again in and out within 5 minutes with no issues. I can only speak for my own experience and it was easily one of the better ones Ive had renting a vehicle. I hope that this location can provide everyone with the same excellent customer service that I received. 5/5 experience for myself.

2022-05-17Poor! I reserved a medium car like a Civic to drive all the way to Vegas. I was told that the only thing they had left was a Toyota pickup truck, a gas guzzler that doubled the cost of my journey. I was told this was an upgrade but I wanted fuel efficiency not 4x4 all terrain capability. Safe to say it cost me a fortune to get there. Only 1 guy serving at the counter who had to also go and get the vehicles, so it took 15-20 mins to serve each person in the line. Very inefficient way to run the business. I found the Kettner branch much better.

2022-03-24We booked our car nearly a month in advance and it was paid in full. When my wife and I arrived to pick it up, the young kid working the counter said that he had our reservation, but simply didnt have a car for us. He just shrugged his shoulders and told us to go pick up a car at the airport location. We took a taxi to the airport and the Avis agent there informed us that this downtown location was just a franchise, and that franchise locations manage their own reservations. The airport location had no cars available. We were left completely stranded without a car to get to the next city on our trip. To top it all off, this location still hasnt refunded our reservation. Trying to get anyone on the phone has been a total joke.

2022-08-16The customer service at this place is very poor. My rental car had an accident and we had to go in to make a report The Hispanic Female Avis employee told me to park in a specific spot. This sport was a reserved spot. The guy who owns the spot showed up and asked us to move the car. She started arguing with him when there are a ton of spot open in the garage. She told the guy he must be miserable person to tell her she can not park there for 5 minutes. I felt so embarrassed. I will never use Avis if this is how they treat people. her actions where uncalled for.

2022-05-07I was treated right. They didnt have my Mustang car ready when I got there. They said that the car would be about an hour and a half before it was ready. I asked him if they had 4 wheels that turned and an engine that went vroom vroom. So they gave me an upgrade for free. I love the it. Toyota 4Runner thats what they gave me instead. Vroom Vroom....

2020-03-11Needed a last minute rental after a horrible experience with Hertz. Called at 10:00am and was in a car by 11:30am. The owner here Ziad was extremely helpful. Nice to see an owner who is actually involved in his company’s day to day operations. I can truly appreciate that and it says something about him and his franchise. Much respect.
