Walked in by chance. Went in for ice cream & coffee. Discovered they also offer a wide variety of pastries, prepared by/for them. Another discovery is the wide selection of imported snacks, both refrigerated items & shelf items. These are entertaining to browse even if not familiar with them; unlikely not to pickup one or several items just to try them. Another worthy discovery is that pricing is very practical & family oriented: both for eat-in & take-home food items. Glad, really glad.
Terrible experience here with the horribly rude and threatening couple. I took a couple of pictures of their good (looking) foods, to remember cause its all in foreign languages, and I wanted to remember. This couple chased me out of the store, even after I stopped taking any more pictures, as asked. First attacked by the woman, then approached by the husband, with the same questions, and then told me to GET OUT, AND NEVER COME BACK! The man FOLLOWED ME TO MY CAR, constantly taking MY picture, as well as my car and license plates. Also holding a 2x4 in his other hand, saying hes going to call the cops! At this point I could not hold back any longer, and told him that I doubt the cops will come for a picture taking potential customer being chased out of his store. AND, also that that particular business model, of chasing, photographing, and threatening potential customers isnt good for business.AVOID THIS PLACE, THE FAMILY IS NOT NICE, THEY DONT WANT BROWSERS, AND DEFINITELY DONT EVEN THINK THAT TAKING A PICTURE OF SOMETHING IS OKAY, CAUSE ITS NOT, THAT WAS MADE VERY CLEAR.They should be a lot nicer to ALL clientele, I have already left a bunch of these reviews because ppl need to know what CAN happen. You cant just act any way you want, when in the SERVICE industry, and just out of common decency.
Fun little grocery store. They have a few corner shop type mainstream foods, but this place is primarily geared toward Balkan specialties. They make their own meat (and potato) pies on site. They sell sweets from Europe like Milka from Germany as well as a bunch of odd ball ex-Yugoslavia chocs and sweets and Turkish delight (lokum.) There are a variety of interesting savory goods like various types of feta, sausages, olives, egg noodles, sardines etc. Good place to visit for a snack if you live in the neighborhood and get an idea of what they sell.
Again a disappointment, pastries & muffins are so old. Ordered a lemon muffin today and he asked if I wanted it heated, I am thinking why...lemon muffins are moist...NOT SO, the muffin was so dry and crumbly and although the topping looked so delicious it was rock hard and couldnt be chewed - Nothing about this was edible, it was thrown away
I love this place! They have such fun imported foods likeOblatne Vafel LIst and Kinder Happy Hippo.Staff have always been so helpful and friendly, they may even tell you a story or two.If you are in Alameda, you should stop in real quick to say hi and pick up something youve never tried before!

2022-07-26Wonderful to stumble upon this European market while walking to the Farmers Market on Webster Street. It just moved across the street into the old Alameda Lighting space. The groceries are in the back of the store, almost like a secret annex behind the Mitchells ice cream shop. The owner is from the former Yugoslavia (Bosnia), so many brands from the Balkan states. Canned sprats, German Appel zarte herring, Hungarian goulash, Turkish hamsi fried anchovies, Podravka pâté, Bosnian burek pie, Milka chocolate, Vegeta Mediterranean seasoning. As someone with an Asian background, I see so many things I wanted to buy! I will definitely make this a destination when I find myself in near Downtown Oakland and Alameda.

2022-07-09Wow - such a hidden gem of an Eastern European market and beyond (Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Armenia). I had no idea until I walked by one day and saw someone drinking what I thought was Turkish coffee - it was Bosnian, like the owner.Lots of folks come for the amazing Mitchell’s ice cream. My husband and I are fans of wines/beers in the region, and the selection doesn’t disappoint.

2022-08-09I had a pretty messed up experience here today. My daughter came in for an ice cream, and we usually get a kids scoop, which is $2.50. My daughter wanted to mix two flavors, so I asked the lady at the counter if thats still kids scoop price, and she said yes. When she rang up the register, it was for $5.50, the price of a double scoop! I asked the lady if she made a mistake, she said no, because she meant two kids scoops. I was livid, because that was completely dishonest. After coming to Aria for years, I told her Ill never come back again if she went through with the transaction, which she did. Dishonest and thieving lady!We went again, asking for kid scoops ($3) and didnt notice until later they charged single scoop price ($4). I wish I could just enjoy ice cream with my kids without feeling nickel-and-dimed each time.
