It is Beautiful this time of year to hike at Almaden Quicksilver. (3/21/2021).The park has so many different trails and well marked. An amazing history of the mine, Guadalupe Reservoir, Almaden Lake, and very spectacular views of San Jose Bay.I was used Mockingbird Hill Parking, with no entrance fee, it has a bathroom at the trailhead.I was hiked 16 miles, and 2,500 ft of elevation gain.My hike was not easy because it was a long-distance but it was not too difficult since it was not steep. It’s nice rolling hills with some great views of the valley, and not too crowded.Tons of fun!! Lots of shade and little sun.Good balance of incline and decline.During early spring, the park offers one of the most spectacular wildflower displays. The secret of happiness is to discover all the marvels of California.Happy Hike Everyone!!!
The mockingbird entrance has plenty of free parking in a large lot, making it easier to park than other entrances.I do an easy 3.8 mile loop with a 730 foot elevation gain - a nice quick workout but get some work done in the first .75 miles with the gain.Lots of poison oak and bugs in a mostly shaded route. Watch out for ticks as they are abundant and there are rattlesnakes out.
This is a huge park with many trails. It was a mix of shade and sun, with many bike rides sharing the trail with (fewer) hikers. The views were spectacular. Elevation gain is over 1,000 feet, so be prepared. If you like a flat hike, this is not the place for you. But, the views were worth the effort!!
This was a very historic park, with old machinery from silver mining, and was set up to show you how it used to be done. Took a pretty little walk along a small trail with purple lupines, and walked by a creek. I think theres a longer trail, but we had a 2 year old with us, so we just walked in the field and took pictures. Plenty of parking space.
Great hiking trails, with good views of the mountains and the San Jose suburbs. The paths for most of the hiking trails are very wide so perfect for social distancing. Frequent sightings of deers and wild turkeys also on the morning. The reservoir is especially pretty during sunset. Traffic is light in the morning, the best time for hiking!
It’s a beautiful park with great hiking. People also bike, hog, ride their horses and walk their dogs. Views are gorgeous and there’s great variety of terrain - sunny hills, shady forest, lakeside etc. Hills are not too steep.I parked on the street (McAbbee Rd) which was free and easy. You can do QuickSilver 5mile loop from there. (See pictures). Entrance has restrooms (Porto potty).Overall fantastic place for hiking.
A bite sized adventure close to the Bay, New Almaden feels like a taste of the last wild days of the wild west. A six-ish mile hike, round trip, from the Mockingbird Hill entrance takes you to three abandoned mine sites dating from between the 1860s and 1900: the April Tressel, the San Cristobal tunnel, and the Buena Vista Shaft. Shorter (or much longer!) hikes are possible, depending on what you want to see. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen, as there is little shade on some trails, and many are steeply up or down hill. Depending on the season, the creeks here can be lovely, though they were completely dry on our last visit. You likely wont see any cinnabar, the red mercury ore that was mined here, but all the same it is fun to keep an eye out for the green serpentine throughout the park, polished here and there by the boots of hikers over the last 50 years.
Lovely place for a hike. So many trails to choose from. There are 3 park entrances. Parking is free. It’s never too busy. Make sure to take a map and view the topography as some of the trails and quit steep and are not for all fitness levels. Some trails allow horses and mountain bikes. There are lots of wildlife to observe such as deer, birds of prey, and gophers. Good place to see spring wildflowers.
Beautiful place to hike, bike, jog, run and also have a picnic.Multiple trails with multiple entrances.Hikes can be anywhere from 1+ to 10+miles.Maps are available at the entrance.{Almaden Quicksilver County Park is located at: 21785 Almaden Rd San Jose, CA 95120}Carry hats, water and snack if you are going on longer hike. You can still see the old Mercury mines.View from top 👌👌👌👌👌
Great hiking spot! There are trails with shade and without. A lot of uphill and Im out of shape currently, so other than feeling like I was going to collapse, it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the old buildings in English Town and also seeing some old mine shafts now covered by rocks. So you think youre looking at a pile of rocks, but once you get what youre looking at, its interesting to think there are miles of cinnabar tunnels below you!
Typical Bay Area foothill hiking, but as the name suggests, this is the sight of a former quicksilver mining operation. As such, there are a lot of sights to see scattered along the trails. One of the best stops is English Camp. Take a picture of the posted maps & learn about our history as you hike.
After a very worthwhile stop by the museum, we headed out to the park for a good hike. Lots of great places to learn some history, stop for a bite to eat, or grab a picture of some fantastic views. Lots of locals are out for exercise, but a fair amount of people doing the loop to take in some history as well; something for everyone! We werent sure if it wasnt more crowded because it was the week before Christmas or if it was because maybe not so many people know about this place.
Nice network of trails set in the hills near San Jose. Well maintained trails. Free parking. Large parking lot. Many of the trails were multi-use -- available for hiking, biking, and horse back riding. A few small streams for water sources. Horse troughs and picnic tables scattered throughout the trail systems. And several old historical mining sites to hike to. Will definitely go back to try more trails. Great view from the one we went on!(If this review was helpful, please hit the like icon below)
What an awesome place to get some trail running training! Im training for a ultra trail run and this was perfect. Theres so many trails and such a vast majority of elivation shifts that your options are endless! If youre going to run or hike I recommend the trails that are designed for just that. The trails that are open to all types of activities was OK, but I loved having my solitude and when I took one of the all traffic trails I had people walking dogs, alot of bikers and big trucks working on the trails. So just and FYI, on the others it was just me for the and I loved it!!! I saw about ten dear in a three hour time span and so many other animals. Thankfully no big cats!
If you have never gone to Almaden Quicksilver County Park then you are definitely missing out! it is a great opportunity to get some beautiful scenery under your belt we loved our time there and we took lots of great photos that we are excited to share on google with the community. if you do indeed love the photos we are sharing then please do leave us a like so that google likes what we are doing for the community our mission is to spread understanding!
Its a nice park, from any trail head you can find trails of different length and difficulty, you can find views on hills, on San Jose, as well as old buildings in English camp, discover some history of park and bay area in general. I like this place, usually no issues with parking and parking is free.Keep in mind, trails are not paved and can be steep in some parts.
This entrance is unique and it shows the history of this place using placards. This was the first mine in California and you can get a feel of how it must be during its mining days, the trams used to transport mercury, light house, some old equipment etc.You can use this trail for hiking or bike riding. Its a steep trail though.
McAbee entrance, is popular and in a neighborhood so parking can be hard. May get crowded on weekend mornings. Good place for a hike or run, with a mix of shade & sun, elevation gain is around 700-800 feet. No mountain biking at this end of Almaden Quicksilver park, you need to go the New Almaden Hacienda entry. Outhouses provided a quarter mile up the trail from the entrance.
One of our new favorites in the Bay Area! There are over 35 miles of trails suitable for all skill levels with views of San Jose and the Santa Cruz Mountains. An eagle scout troop labeled all the many historical sites throughout the park, so make sure you grab a brochure before you embark upon your adventure. Dog friendly with lots of great lunch spots.
Started at Guadalupe Reservoir, went to Almaden Quicksilver and back.Very pleasant hike.I recommend going left as almost everyone else starts going right, constantly having to deal with others that are either going faster or slower and you dont get that quiet privacy most of us like to enjoy solo, or with your hiking mate. Definitely will do it again, or explore the other trails.
I was in for a awakening with this place. Was invited to hike here in the morning which I did couple of guys yet it cut short. So I went back right and resume where we left off and DAMN!!! Awesome views of the Guadalupe reservoir, lotta cool creek shots and the trails are really something. It kicked my ass! Ahaha longest trail to take and most Ive had to endure trailing along. The sights are really awesome!!
We hiked the mine hill trail to the abandoned mine you can see near the top. Its a little tricky to find, and a steep uphill climb, but its a good workout and very neat to see. We took the English camp trail back to the parking lot and got to see where English camp used to be. Very interesting; I didnt know that about the area. The hike on English camp trail is steeper and not as shaded as mine hill trail. I cant wait to come back and explore.
My favorite place to go hiking. Its relatively close to our house and big enough to get lost. One of the not well known gems of nature in the South Bay. There is even a museum near the South entrance dedicated to the history of the park and the mining that happened there during the Gold Rush.
Excellent hiking for the entire family to historic mining sites or just up into the hills. A nugget to easily miss is the Casa Grande, a former mine owners villa that houses a mining museum and furbished rooms with furniture resembling the lifestyle of the 19th century, located in Old Almaden, a quarter mile before the Hacienda entrance to the park.
Ahhh what a place. Wonderful to come visit with friends and family.Nice place to walk to pups or jog.Lots of trails and shade. Beautiful views and aroma of flowers stunning. We also visit ranger station- lady was very knowledgeable. Give us a map and suggest us what we can see and knew Park very well.Love it.
We entered through Mcabee entrance and passed through Senador Mine. Went through Guadalupe trail and looped back through Mine hill trail and exited through same entrance. It was moderate level trek with some elevation and you get a look of Guadalupe Reservoir too in this loop! Have fun.
Pretty clear and clean trail. Nice for runs. Wide enough for social distancing. A cool view of the reservoir too.The Guadalupe reservoir is a perfect midpoint rest stop. The second half of the trail has amazing views of the valley and lots of newly bloomed flowers in the trees. I’d come back for a run!
This is truly a great park to visit for hiking, jogging, mt biking, or horseback riding. There are several entrances to the park, many of which are right off of major roads. This park is expansive and has many historic sites to see from the old mining days. No local should ever miss going here.
This is a great place to take the family for a weekend hike. Its also a wonderful spot for mountain biking on gravel roads. And trail running. The ticks are pretty vicious in the spring though. So its very important to treat your clothing with permethrin and wear bug spray. If you get bit by a tick bag and tag it and send it in to have it tested for Lyme disease.
A great place to hike, but because it is mostly fire roads and can be steep, not as much fun to ride bikes. Running can be ok if your quads can take the descents. The things to see are all interesting from a historical point of view and it offer good valley vistas as well.
If you visit this park, watch out for mountain lions and rude people. Also, be mindful of the environment, dont throw garbage anyware in the park. Yes, babana, orange peals, plastic battles, powerbar wrappers & eggshells are considered garbage. Also, dont polute the airways with loud music (lets face it, nobody wants to hear your lousy music)😬
Back in the early 80s, when I was a kid, my friends and I would spend most of our time in New Almaden and the mountains. We used to get chased out by authorities but it is open to everyone now. Go figure...Be careful...There is still some deliverance type people up there.Warning given..
Had a nice hike here. Started around 10am so it wasnt too hot. A lot of the trails are tree covered so its easier to stay cool than some other places, like Pinnacles National Park. Be aware that most of the trails are narrow so cant really walk side by side. What is cool about the trail we did was that it felt like we walked through various unique areas, forest, meadow, mountain, etc...
Liked that it has a good amount of tree line. You can hear the critters scampering around, crunch of leaves, rustle of branches and if not busy you hear nothing :). Silence is golden :). I would say its an Easy to Med hike due to the up n down which thankfully was more like 30ish degree or less of an angle and not a straight 45 or higher to climb. The path was narrow so really doable post vaccine vs pre- vaccine as its hard to be get past people without being too close. Loved, will do again.
I went on a nice 3 mile hike here. There is plenty of parking, clean restrooms and the scenery is gorgeous. I went on a gorgeous Saturday morning and there were very few people. Make sure you pick up a trail map so you dont end up on a longer hike than you planned for. The trails are well marked.I came around a bend and a couple of nice bucks were standing there frozen with a deer in the headlight look. It did feel like it was up hill both ways, great exercise, make sure you bring water and enjoy.
Such a awesome place to hike because of the natural beauty and the nearly 200 years of mining history going back to the native Ohlone peoples and the 1846 claim by Captain Andres Castillero of the Mexican Army. My two passions are hiking and history so Quicksilver is perfect to me.
They dont bother you if you dont bother them. I went early one morning and encountered 4 coyotes ON the trail. There are multiple trails so you can get loops for varying distances. There are many entrances, but the McKean Rd entrance opens to many different trail options and has a mix of open and tree covered trails.
One of my favorite places to hike in California, if not in the world! You could go to this place a dozen times and go on a new trail each time. Each entrance has its own distinct trails with varying scenery and difficulty level.A great place to get some fresh air and enjoy the diverse flowers and wildlife.
I took my kids to two loop trails here in the last 3 weeks. They got the necessary exercise and I got a chance to fantasize riding my dust covered Santa Cruz all mountain bike on these trails. Some rock gardens and narrow single tracks at lower elevations, wide gravel fire roads on top. Not too many people during the lockdown. A good place to get away from things.
This is a great place to hike because it’s good exercise but doesn’t take much time. We like to do this hike on Saturday mornings or weekday evenings after work. It’s dog friendly and my golden doodle loves it too! There’s a loop that’s about 3 miles and another one about 5 miles. You can choose which one depending on how much time you have or the amount of exercise you want to do.
The views of Almaden from this park are stunning. The retired mines are quite interesting and include boards with information about what they were used for. The trails go right up next to them too, which allows you to get up close and admire the massive pieces of machinery. I took my mountain bike on the trails, which were very challenging (especially since I was not used to steep dirt trails). I would definitely recommend giving this park a visit. Its great for walking and biking, and the views are gorgeous.
Great Park! Parking is free and plentiful even on the busier days. Lots of trails to hike on and most of the time youll only see just a couple of people at most. Stay on mine Hill trail for a moderately challenging hike and the chance to experience history. There are a lot of shady spots along most trails but during summer time the heat in the hills can be absolutely brutal. Bring plenty of water. Oh, in Rattle snakes have been spotted on trails so be aware of your surroundings.
We love this trail. Great for kids or without. There are Porta potties but they were pretty smelly when we were there today. Some hills but nothing crazy difficult. I enjoy the scenic views and there are some benches scattered around the trail in case you need a rest. Only street parking and parking cant get scarce on the weekends. Popular local trail.
Having hiked here many times, it is our go-to place for weekend hikes in the south bay. There are many different trails, varying in length and difficulty, so it can satisfy those wishing to have a nice leisurely outing, or those wishing to challenge themselves with longer hikes. Be forewarned, after the rains, the trails tend to be very muddy and slippery, so good hiking boots are a must. In the summer, the trails can be very dusty, so dont show up with your everyday footwear.
The park is good for a quick stroll. The hikes are not bad either since the slopes are quite gentle. There is plenty of parking available since not a lot of people visit it. I wouldnt recommend it for the views though, there are other parks in the area with much better views.
This is great little place to go for a hike. Little out of place to get to. There werent any stores near by, so make sure you prepare as it is little out of way from the town. Enough parking place. The restroom by the entrance was out of order which was inconvenience. There are few different hiking trails. Two of them are very bad, but others are great. Its nice up and down trails and not too steep as far as the elevation goes. There is great place on one of the hills to just sit and relax, which is under a tree and so in shade. The wind and the view from there was great.
What a nice place to go hiking and get a workout. My legs are going to be sore for sure. This county park has miles of trails that mostly go uphill, and have great views of the New Almaden valley or San Jose. Make sure you bring water (none on trail) and a snack because you could be here for hours depending on which trail you take. Trails are well marked and easy to navigate, but take a paper map. There are occasional benches to sit on and trails are partially shaded by trees, but wear sunscreen. Go in the morning when it is cooler. One of the interesting aspects of this park is its history of mercury mining, which dates back to 1845. You will see old buildings, mining equipment, and closed off mines along the trails. The trails are dirt, so wear sturdy shoes. Today I saw four deer, birds, flowers, mountain scenery, old buildings and a rattle snake in the middle of the trail. Try and be careful with the hazardous animals and be aware there are ticks here and some of them are infected with serious bacteria such as Lyme disease (my dentist got Lyme disease at this park), so wear repellent and stay away from the tall grass or bushes. If you take precautions you will be safe. Cell phone service in unreliable or nonexistent unless you are on the side facing San Jose. 2 meter amateur radio repeater signal is strong here, and you can see the antennae on Mt. Loma. This is a great place to go hiking and get a workout, so go do it!
I started at the Mockingbird Hill entrance and took the Hacienda Trail which is a great uphill downhill trail. Perfect cardio!Dog are allowed but make sure you check yours for ticks. I picked them out from time to time and counted 15+Watch your steps! I saw a 1 foot long rattle snake in the middle of the walkway sunbathing.
Beautiful park with hints of history sprinkled across the park. There are a few trails to choose from. I have only gone there once and only did a short trail but enjoyed it and plan on going back. Looking at the map I get the sense of the park being almost like a labyrinth where certain trails lead to dead ends. I would say a great place to get lost in history.
There are some great hiking trails here, everything from the advanced hiker to the novice. I enjoy nature and it is great to know that this park is here and our backyard. If you have time there is also a docent-led tour about the old Almaden area. That was the first settlement here in San Jose. Many of the homes are historical landmarks and there is even cemeteries of the original owners and the Portuguese workers. The drive to the Quicksilver its quiet and Serene which just adds to a great hike
Top-notch hikes and breath-taking vistas just a short drive from home. The feeling of isolated wilderness, within view of suburbia. CA history and wildlife all in one package. Hey, we have a few hours to kill, wanna take a quick walk in one of the most beautiful places in the world? Yeah, okay. Let me change shoes and we can head over.
Great hiking! Trails were well maintained, a number of bridges to cross, mix of single track, windy trails and some fire road trails as well. Beautiful views of Silicon Valley.Mockingbird entrance > New Almaden trail > Cinnabar > mine hill > Randol > Buena Vista Trail > New Almaden trail = 9.8 miles
Great open space. Hiking trails are clearly marked in most places. Fellow hikers are usually friendly and approachable if lost on trails. No amenities besides the restrooms near the parking lot. Bring water, snacks etc. Some historic old buildings are visible along the trail. Medium difficulty trails.
Massive park with TONS of hiking trails. Great way to get outdoors and theres some really impressive views of San Jose on all the trails Ive tried so far. In addition to that theres remnants of old mining buildings and informational signs on some of the trails too. Even after hiking here for years I still havent seen everything. Highly recommended!
I take my dog here for a hike at least once a week, and every time, theres at least two morons that think theyre above the rules and keep their dogs off their leashes.Otherwise, nice clean trails with beautiful scenery all throughout. Theres also plenty of free parking.
This is a family-friendly park created out of an old mining town. There are several gentle trails good for all ages and a couple of more moderate trails. It can get pretty muddy in the rainy season but the trails are good the rest of the year. Some of the trails have a bit of shade but most of this park is not shaded, so wear a hat and dont forget your sunscreen.Bring your own water. You should not drink any water in this area even if you have filtration with you because of the risk of contamination from the mine. Its a great place to look for wildflowers in spring, and they have an exhibit where kids can see some old mining equipment and some of the machines are hooked up with hand-cranks that a child can turn to see things move (from a safe distance -- the machinery is all behind a fence and the crank is the only thing on the outside of the fence, so no risk of pinched fingers or other injuries).Up on the hill you can see the remains of some buildings and you get a good view of the valley.
Great place for a hike AND history all in one. Numerous entrances to this park. The New Almaden entrance has ample parking for cars and horse trailers. The initial hike in is slightly steep. Nothing too challenging, but if youre out of shape Id try the Mcabee Rd entrance. Beautiful are. Watch for mountain lions and rattle snakes.
This is an excellent park. Some great things about this park include:-free admission-dogs allowed on trails with leash-historical sites-many miles of trails of varying difficultyPlease note:The recommended entrance for most first-time visitors to the park is the one on Mockingbird Hill Ln. When putting directions in the GPS, make sure you are getting directions to that entrance. (Otherwise, the directions might take you someplace weird)
One of our favorite places to go hiking on the weekends or holidays. Its always sunny and gorgeous up there. The views are beyond compare. It is a strenuous hike so take that into consideration. There are bathrooms at the bottom of the trail but there arent any be on that. There also isnt any water available so make sure you bring a water bottle.
Almaden Quicksilver is a great place for an awesome hike. There is a very steep trail that is called a not-a-trail. It is a awesome trail to get used to walking down steep hills. And there are lots of interesting structures left over from when they used to mine cinnabar ore to make liquid mercury. And there is a awesome gem and crystal mine with gems and crystals in rocks surrounding the entrance to the mine.
We hiked this park from 3 different entrance, but our favorite is the one off of Hicks Road, just where the Mount Umunum Road goes to the right. The parking is easy, the trail is clean and wide and goes through beautiful oak and bay woodland to some lovely views. It passes the old smelter and we enjoyed the different cut-offs and side trails. Stunning views, lots of harmless wild life (no mountain lions on this trip). We saw red legged salamanders and lots of deer and various hawks injust an hour and a half. Easy walking for those with children or achy joints.
Great place for all hiking levels. I love coming first thing in the morning to start my day at 8am. Once thats done(~9:45am) I have the rest of the day to relax after accomplishing a great workout. Its not the most difficult trail to hike but it does get the heart rate up if youre going at a good pace. I like to make it challenging by bringing a 30lb kettle bell to workout my grip and core as I lug it around. There are also porta-potties at the trail head off of McKinley, which is nice.
Well maintained trails, clean restrooms at 2 of the main entrances, great views of San Jose, and provides a variety of trails (37 miles) for hiking, some are open to mountain biking. Ive done up to 16 miles in a single hike, which spanned the length of the park, and consisted of varying degrees of difficulty. Will definetly be back.
An absolutely amazing place. The park is absolutely beautiful offering plenty of views, including those of the Almaden and the Santa Clara Valley, as well as offering plenty of trail for the adventurous to explore. The park also contains plenty of old buildings, and plenty of signs and charts that offer visitors the information and history behind the buildings and the park. And the best part about it is that its free! Theres no parking fees, and the park offers maps for free as well. However, if youre planning to park at the Hicks Road parking space, make sure to watchers out for the bikers! The road is quite narrow, and theres plenty of blind spots, meaning that theres few oppurtunities to pass the road bicyclists who commonly traverse the road.
I love coming here! Its always a good hike with lots to see. Definitely check out all the old mining sites. I had no idea it existed here in San Jose!I usually go in the Hacienda entrance because of all the parking and its slightly easier to get to.Weve seen baby deers here before! So cute!

2022-05-01We parked at the Hummingbird parking lot, no parking fee, clean restroom. We hiked to Buena Vista, English camp, then back. Total 5.3 miles. Half of the trail are shaded. Great view and history learning!

2022-02-27Challenging steep semi-shaded hike. Do bring water and watch your step for dog poo that people arent picking up 😥 Plenty of parking and great views

2022-01-28I really enjoy this park for walking around at some of the older equipment it was very nice hike though some of the signs could Youre some restoration and the machinery needs some maintenances on the interactive parts

2022-02-02I come to this park to bike; however, lots of people come here to walk. There are only a few bike trails and they are wide fire road type trails. But the trails on which bikes are permitted are fun with good mix of pain, rewards and views. Cool history and archeological sites throughout the park. After biking the park, I descend to the west entrance and make a loop around the mountain for a 24 mile excursion or head to Calera for a 30 miler. At the Hacienda entrance there are portable toilets. It will be hot during warmer months or days. Immediately from the Hacienda entrance, the main trail goes up for 1.5 or so miles. If youre looking for level biking/hiking, I dont recommend this park. For others, whether you bike or hike, this is a great park to check out.

2022-06-27Nice, not very hard hike that begin at the McAbee entrance and continue to Senador Mine trail. We did 6 miles loop along the reservoir.

2022-04-20Great place to hike with a good selection of trails. I always enjoy bringing a little picnic lunch and there are tables located around the park to use (theyre marked on the map). The park is on a hill so be prepared for some steep stuff. Great views depending on where you are. On really clear days, you can see SF and Oakland! Oh and watch out for poison oak and ticks!

2022-01-02Beautiful when the hills are green. Get ready to climb. We had a nice race that took off from here and winded all around for 13 miles; really a great time for New Years Day 2022.

2021-10-31I took the trail from the Hacienda entrance past the English Fort and back. It was recommended in Best Easy Day Hikes San Jose (2009 edition). The route was 3.5mi round trip. Start with Mine Hill Tr until it becomes Castillero Tr, then English Camp Tr, then go right off English Tr to Deep Gluch Tr back to the parking lot.The trail was too steep for me. It’s a constant ascent to English Fort and then constant descent on the way back. I’d guess the incline is around 20-35% the whole way. It was fine but I currently prefer more flat hikes. My knee hurt on the descent and I didn’t get palpitations on the way up, so maybe not toooo steep I dunno.Anyways the views were nice. Lots of pretty trees and you can see wooded hills in the background. The English Fort is interesting. You can see some buildings where miners lived.

2022-01-02Wonderful place for a good and challenging hike. It is cold at this time of the year so dress appropriately.
