This was the most phenomenal experience Ive had in the area ever. Everyone there was super nice (especially the dogs), there were numerous art projects around and on the side of the trail, the sunset was absolutely BEAUTIFUL, and the nature was just extraordinary. I will definitely go again and I hope everyone who gets a chance goes as well.
Really cool place to hike and discover a smorgasbord of art relics left behind when some very talented artists once made this place their home. Wear good hiking shoes, also some of the trails involve climbing & steep descents. Beautiful views of the bay. Your pooch will love this place and the adjacent dog beach. Parking lot tends to fill up fast.
This is is a great place next to the East Bays edge where you can go for a walk with the kids, dogs or even by yourself. There is a great dog beach, where some peeps even go for a swim.In the early 60s, construction debris, mostly concrete and rebar, was dumped in the area as fill. This is what created the Bulb.TIPS: Bring drinking water. Wear walking shoes. Wear sunscreen on exposed areas. If you love to take pics—make sure your device is fully charged.
Like an adult playground (although I’m sure kids like it too). Bring a camera and make some double exposures or be inspired by the creativity and surrounding landscapes. It’s a nice place to visit outdoors during the pandemic and fill a walk with thoughts or conversation. Probably a good date adventure, if you’re into that.
A bit neglected park with lots of art installations in the bushes and graffitti on the rocks. Sticks out into the ocean and is cool when the rest of the land is hot. Often quite windy and the far tip seems a bit scary when no one is there and the paths get narrow, overgrown and windy. On the land side is a giant parking lot for the baseball fields. There is paid parking (when there is an event?), but you can find parking for free by going on further. There were some kite surfers in the bay which is nice to look at.
Now that my 5yr old is sans training wheels, I’ve been looking for places where I can let little man practice his off road biking. On the single track he moves at a walking/jogging pace, which is perfect so as not to be an annoyance to hikers. Doesn’t hurt that he’s friendly and super cute. A handful of trails can get pretty gnarly with bare rebar, and broken concrete, but a little scouting and we are aces. Decent hill on the double wide gravel path was perfect for practicing descending and brake feathering, then a sprint to the beach.
This place is one of my most favorite places in the entire Bay Area! Certainly a hidden gem, and one of the most unique places I’ve ever been to by far! Each time I go I always enjoy finding something new, and seeing the new graffiti that’s popped up! Let me tell you, if you’re visiting the Bay Area, or even are just a local and have never been here, this is no doubt a must see! Just please be courteous to the people who live there, and make sure you aren’t accidentally walking into their home!
Such a great area for walking while enjoying the water and some random art! There are a lot of neat little makeshift exhibits and creations throughout the trails. So many dogs out, too! There is some parking but it seems to get crowded, so earlier is better. Id be careful with kids since theres metal and rods sticking about. Great, fun place overall.
“Exploring the art in Albany Bulb was fun for one day trip since I’m living not too far from Oakland City.It is dogs friendly, and popular spot to explore (though there’s not enough parking space).A lot of great graffiti artists, wildflowers , pretty cool urban art towards to the end.It has many miles of hiking trails. ( I hiked a little over 2 miles).Hiking along with Albany Beach is very peaceful, I was able to see Bay Bridge, San Francisco Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, and much much more.I left a lot of footprints at the trail, and took home a lot of pictures.I will comeback when I’m in Berkeley.”
Been coming here for years I remember in the being a kid in the late sixties driving up here and dumping stuff out of our car. How crazy right! Anyway now that all the homeless have been kicked out its a nice place but just like everywhere else around here beginning to get overcrowded
A beautiful place with a really cool mix of nature and man made aesthetics. Constantly changing, so you never know what to expect. A good place to leave wacky things you dont know what to do with but which might spark wonder for someone else. Its fantastic for exploring, making art, or a casual walk.
4 stars for the cool driftwood sculptures. Itd be less otherwise, as for the walk/hike itself is just a mount of broken concrete everywhere with mostly terrible graffiti all over the place. Trees are spray painted. Essentially everything that paint could stick on, it is on. Theres also a ton of political messages everywhere, your typical progressive talking points.
The Albany Bulb is as much an outdoor modern art museum as it is a place to go for a walk. There’s a fair amount of graffiti of varying quality scattered about, but I was most impressed by the sculptures on the northern end of the bulb. Recommend sturdy footwear, as there are many opportunities to scramble a bit, and some of the works are close to the waterline that shifts with the tide.
Beautiful experience! Incredible views of the SF bay, buildings, bridges, skyline, fog banks, and shorelines. A wide variety of plants and wildlife inhabit, and visit this park. This island spit, or Bulb, is a perfect example of what kind of creative solutions can be thought of and brought to life in order to resolve the issue of what to do with all the debris from a natural disaster...in this case, the massive bay area earthquake of 1989. The Albany Bulb is a mostly cement, pieces of roads, and solid metal debris landfill from the 89 earthquake. Dogs, families, walkers, wagons, bicycles, and indie film stars all welcome here, even off leash. There are incredible works of art made from debris, driftwood, and natural surroundings along the trails, and hidden amongst the trees. An off leash nirvana for your wave loving, ball chasing, outdoor canine enthusiast. Your teens and toddlers will love the soft sandy shore area. Wear layers, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a good brim hat to avoid feeling uncomfortable on your adventure. Be sure to bring a leash!
Its coming into its own, bit by bit with newly added restrooms, some pavement and a restored beachfront. Otherwise l, its a nature reserve right out of a post apocalyptic movie with sculptures everywhere built from locally sourced construction dump materials. There are many birds big and small and this is a paradise for dog watchers, artists, friends and wanderers that are not afraid of fringe before it goes mainstream.
This is a very interesting place for a little hike and break from the city. Definitely not your typical, managed park Theres a small beach and, while we were there, lots of off leash dogs (with their humans nearby) were enjoying the water and sand. Theres a trail along the water which starts off on an even surface but has various offshoot paths over rocks. Wild blackberry bushes were full of sweet fruit in July. In several places you can see a variety of ad hoc art in the form of sculptures and graffiti. It could be described as a hidden treasure and I would recommend allowing 1 to 2 hours to explore. Wear good shoes.
Pretty sweet all in all, beach, free parking, accessible, off leash dogs, views and art everywhere. Hidden lil spots are the best part they are everywhere on the point, like the castle and the hit club house (hidden toke spot in the middle of some Phoenix date palms. Lots of area to explore and terrains to traverse, even better if you have a bike or off road Segway.
I love this place, there is so much art to see and amazing views of the water and bridges. Some of my favorite art pieces are toward the far end where there are quite a few trash people not to mention the graffiti fort and the driftwood bench. There really is so much to see and some of the best art is off the main trails
Albany Bulb is a fascinating but also sad place. The art work you see was mostly created by the self-governing homeless group who constructed shelters and art out of found materials. The city of Albany made them all leave but their art remains. There is two hour parking available and a public restroom at the entrance. Paths wind through the Bulb with stunning views of the Bay.
Post homeless encampments Bulb. Lots of dogs, most on-leash. Main paths wide and easy to walk - compact earth & gravel. Lots of puddles after rains but not too muddy. Shoreline walks are muddy at low tide with lots of loose rocks and flotsam. Water breaks are Rocky and navigable at low tide but slippery. Lots of large art objects. Lots of wading birds. One and half hours for complete circumnavigation including water breaks.
Albany Bulb is pretty great! There are always lots of pups here, especially when you first enter the park by the beach. After that, there are plenty of different trails that break off and it is nice to walk around in some peace and quiet and check out the cool art. Me and my dog love it here!
Great spot for off leash dog walking. Theres a paved path, multiple dirt trails, and a cove/beach area for the dogs to run and swim. We like it better than point isabelle because the beach is nicer and the park generally is not as crowded. Weve been going here for years and its always a favorite for me and my pups!
Weird, quirky, locally significant site.Youll find a small but quiet beach with good waves, and some rambling trails dotted with interesting graffiti, random art, and evidence of architectural elements discarded after the earthquake. This former landfill was once home to an encampment whose occupants built a somewhat primitive (but very artistic) community of houses, prior to shutdown by local authorities. A few of these small, colorful buildings are still standing, and youll stumble across remnants of various unsanctioned artworks if you wander around for a bit.Awesome for a laid-back day hike, though its been a bit crowded since COVID lockdown began. Parking is very limited - carpool if possible, and be prepared to walk a ways to get to the shoreline. Wear good closed-toe shoes, as there is rubble and rebar everywhere - and bring a jacket. Its very windy, even on sunny days.
I love this place its so peaceful and have alot of diffrent paths so dont get lost because it will confuse you becaus eit has so many diffrent paths but its worth gettting lost its so manybhidden jewels and art everywhere i cant wait to take my kids next time it was so beautiful....
This is a beautiful place with nice trails to walk through with friends and family. Our dog was going crazy because of all the other cute doggos running around. My daughter especially enjoyed the artwork found throughout the trails. Parking was limited and it was difficult to find a spot. However, that wont stop us from making frequent trips here. Its worth it to get out and enjoy nature.
Great place for a walk or run. Blackberries are currently in season and plentiful on the bulb!!...almost a year later, and this just gets better. In late December 2018 the beach was improved and the park keeps improving. A curious and interesting development at the far north-west beach; some creative installations, a little unsettling maybe, but well worth seeing. Also, at the end of the bike trail, near parking a new restroom has been installed for our convenience.
BEWARE! My dog sustained a cut requiring 12 stitches while swimming here on August 27, 2021. The tide was very low at the time and I assume something submerged was abnormally close to the surface, as she has been swimming here safely her whole life (7 years). I reported this accident to Scott Passin of East Bay Parks but have not heard back if any underwater debris was removed or what else may have been discovered to cause such a large cut.
We went today for our first time. The whole family was in love with everything it had to offer. The art, trails, views, and the small beach area . Kids and dogs enjoy swimming in the coved beach area. The dirt trails were easy to walk for all ages of the family. Only down side is the parking is VERY limited. We will be back to visit soon. We had a lovely day in the Bay 😍
I love that it’s an easy art walk with tons of friendly dogs and a friendly beach for dogs and people!! So Excellent!!! I also like what I remember about it from the 90s; a Punk and homeless encampment where folks were a bit wild and also lived together peacefully. You can see some of that in the art there. Sadly, There may have also been Native American artifacts lost there. I always walk here with gratitude for the sanctuary it provides. Plus, friendly peeps!! A true bonus!!
Definitely a fun, pretty area, but a bit grungie in different area. Pretty flowers and trees with awesome views of the bay. Random art and graffiti scattered about which is cool. A couple nice drift wood benches. Huge art pieces made from scrap metal or wood, I’m assuming was all found right where they built their pieces. Great place for dogs to run. Cool spot.
Its very interesting for people into abandoned art and reclaimed spaces. If you like dogs you will see massive numbers being walked here. The views of the city are pleasant even if the shoreline isnt the most photogenic. Wear sturdy shoes if you intend to explore off the path: there are many places with uneven terrain so beware if you have balance or mobility concerns.Shame that most of the artists have been relocated so who knows how long the art will last. It will be interesting to see what becomes of this area in the years to come.
Ive been walking at the Bulb for YEARS. Its a perfect spot for walking with or without your dog. Its a unique and peaceful place with fantastic views. A small beach area. Its a large area, with a small beach near the parking lot, paths lead in all directions. Even when busy you can find a quiet spot. It has been recently renovated with a paved path along the water. If you were concerned about the homeless camps, it isnt an issue now.
Look, if your dog can’t handle being off leash DON’T let them off leash! I can’t fathom people watching my dog/others being attacked, and not doing anything to stop it. How can people as fellow dog owners watch their pet act like a maniac: biting, nipping, and stomping on other dogs and jumping on people! Then have the audacity to ignore it like they aren’t a problem! All I ask is for people to be more respectful of others, we all just want to enjoy our day at the beach... not stress if our pet will make it through the trip. Other than that the beach itself is great😌
What a great place too take your dog! The environment is very diverse so there is something for every dog here. And since it used to be a factory site, there are a lot of cool concrete remains scattered about. The sporatic art you find at the bulb always keeps me wondering and exploring to see new nooks and crannies I havent been to before and my pooch loves to follow along. There is even a beach here your dog can play on, so be sure to bring a towel for them.
I went for the annual bulbfest and enoyed both the newly installed art, chatting with the artists and exploring the more permanent art (change is constant at the bulb). It was a stunning day with great views, wildflowers and lots of dog walking. Itd be fun to bike around to.
Great place to take my dog for a walk. Theres a little beach (Buchanan I think) when you first come in. Unfortunately my dog isnt much for cold water- but youll usually see happy dogs playing ball in the water. You can follow the trail out to the other side where there is artwork that is made from old scrap metal and other garbage- very cool. Ive taken my dog there off leash before and havent any issues.
Best place for dogs who like to swim and roam. I enjoy the bulb more than point isabel because my dog prefers nature to other dogs and humans. Here, there are plenty of things to sniff while jumping, running, and swimming. She cant get lost or get on the the main road from the bulb. The views of the Golden Gate and SF are the best.
Albany Bulb is a really cool and fairly easy walk. The walk offers a constant view of the bay, some beautiful vegetation, and some pretty impressive abstract artistic structures made from the driftwood, trash, and leftover construction materials. I would say it is one of the nicest walks in the area due based on the views it offers it doesnt require more than a couple of hours at most. It is a dirt trail, so the art pieces are not really accessible, but the path between Albany beach and Albany Bulb is.
A totally unique experience. Check out interesting art and get great views. Just be mindful of walking into someones home... Some of the camps are pretty elaborate! You can make a really fun day of Dollar Day Sundays at the track and a visit to the bulb... Its a great, interesting and cheap date!
Great place to see amazing views, strange art, and encampments. Or at least it used to be. I believe theyve since booted all folks living there off the land which is a serious loss for the Bulb. It spooked some people, but I loved it. Great views shouldnt just be for the rich.
A small park jutting out into the bay happens to be a great place to walk your dog, and enjoy the ocean breeze and de-stress. Beack area for walking and a jetty like section. A lot of urban recycling present. Old broken sidewalks and other building material from Oaklands urban development projects now make up a sea wall as well as act as eclictic artwork. One port-a-potty near entrance, but no one seemed to want to use it, so come prepared.
This well-known East Bay landmark of alternative art and lifestyle lives on despite attempts by two cities, to shut it down, and it is still, a magnet for cutting edge graffiti, and basquiat type art, and a place where I always bump into the nice old ladies the El cerrito womens poodle club, strolling with their little Fifis, as they decide between cardio kickboxing and pilates after their keto dinner.

2022-04-04I love this place exploring the ever changing art and beautiful landscape. Sunset views are amazing. Every visit I find a new view. The walk is mostly flat and lots of little places that lead off road. Gets busy during the day parking may be hard in the evening around the Golden hour Ive never had an issue find a spot. Dog friendly but some dogs are off leash so dog parents youve been warned. Theres a small beach at the entrance and a sweeping view of the Golden gate Bridge and San Francisco.

2022-05-02The perfect hike for the artistic spirit! We enjoyed this coastal stroll as we took in the reflective art pieces which bring peace of mind and heart! It was the perfect spot to take my family on a birthday outing after a lovely East Bay brunch. Heads up- the bathrooms were locked, and parking is a little tricky on Sundays.

2022-02-13I read about this place In a weekend magazine and was intrigued by the sculpture of the yearning woman. I had been around here before but until now, never ventured out thru the land to the waters edge.I was astounded at the amount of local art that was on display throughout what must have been 10 to15 acres. Paintings, sculptures, installations, poetry, found art. A treasure of creativity and expression ranging from meditating with nature to Black Lives Matter. The place pulsed with energy that drew you from one piece to another. Climbing the uneven concrete slabs painted to look like stars to a relaxing beach walk on the yellow brick road, I lost myself for more than 2 hours in the magic of this place. There is no admission but the works on display rival any curated gallery. Do yourself a favor and take a stroll through the Albany Bulb and let yourself connect with the artistry and imagination you wont find anywhere else like this.

2021-08-17I love going for a walk here at Albany Bulb. Consider wearing shoes that protect your feet. Also, if you like to take pictures...bring your phone/camera. Artists continue to create new art...new flowers pop up...the sky is always changing. Also, bring a light weight jacket. When I was here last, I found myself getting hot and taking my jacket off, and then a few minutes later cooling off and taking my jacket off.Thank you to the people who decided to make this a park! And thank you for keeper it a park for everyone to enjoy!!!

2021-08-15The Bulb is increasingly popular for good reason but plenty of parking if you know when/where to go. Short jaunt to a 100+ meter beach with views extending from Port of Oak, BB, SF and the GGB. If you walk a bit, views continue north to Marin, Mt Tam, Angel Is, Alcatraz Richmond...and you get surprigly far out into the bay. Birders paradise. There are options to explore and even find solitude in this clean, construction landfill that was home and refuge for those needing a free place to exist. The artwork that originated from these homesteaders pepper the strange landscape with new art added regularly.I wont spill all the beans on everything because surprise is the best part...you have to explore this unique spot

2021-05-19Such a nice spot to hang out for an afternoon. This is an offleash park, dogs need to be under voice control. So expect to see many furry friends running around on your walk. A bike trail that runs along the bay brings you right here. Explore all the little foot trails and cool art, and have a dip in the bay to end your day.

2022-06-22When its that hot in the Bay, the Breeze cools it down a good fifteen degrees.
