$10 ticket per person. 145 stairs one way.. Couldnt get clear pics, probably because of the lighting and I am an amateur photographer too. Really a cool place to visit. Visited the place on sunday and there was hardly any wait when I visited the place. Free street parking.
$10 for 10min. It was cool but definitely not worth the entrance fee. We went on a Sunday around 1pm, and had to wait 30min in the sun to buy tickets. You walk like 3min down a tunnel with wet, slanted steps. At the bottom, theres a fenced platform in the cave. Theres an opening where you can see the sky and ocean. They restrict you to 15min in the cave, but most people will stay less than 5min.
A little history, a little mystery and a cool experience to escape underground and then see the ocean! Okay, the Walk to the shore from atop this cliff face is cool to do at the surface, but going subterranean and walking down & up through a narrow tunnel, dug long ago is really awesome and enjoyable. The cave entrance to the ocean is wide,. Yet feels small and has an inlet that allows for very small boats to enter, perfect for those who follow the Pirate life. Enjoy your time here, its a must see location!
We took the 145 step adventure and it was awesome. We did this with a 5 yr old and a almost 2 yr old, but the little one needed to be carried! We got to the cave bottom and were greeted by a Sea Lion which was awesome! The beautiful view was so worth the 145 steps down and back up!
Little shop with a variety from souvenirs to jewelry & much more. The cave entrance is inside the store but there is a $10 entrance fee for 10-15 minutes of the cave view. Theres 145 steps that can be sometimes slippery and low ceilings. I do not recommend for claustrophobic or anxiety suffering people as it can be narrow and air while going back up can seem thin. Its legit a cave under the store people, pretty amazing.
This place is beautiful! It is a step stair case but well worth it. It was crowded in the afternoon with a line outside the store, so we came back the next morning, there was no line and available parking. If you cant find parking on the street there is a paid parking lot for 25 dollars, well worth it in my opinion. We hit the local shops a and made a morning of it.
I feel its overrated. Its just okay. For 7 dollars you go down and come up with one view. If you have plenty of time in San Diego then go for it, but dont miss other things for this place.its okay to get experience (if you have plenty of time). And there can be a long line for the entrance (at least on weekends)
Im from Omaha Nebraska and this is a really beautiful place to come by. There were seals and Birds and also seen a crab that I was trying to get a picture of but he pretty much hid behind a rock. I definitely recommend to come and visit. Love the stores and gift shops as well.
Quaint shop. Steep stairs. Beautiful once youve reached the bottom. Killer going back up for the unfit or elderly. Nice place to visit. Parking can be a problem. Circled and circled until gave in and had to pay $25 to park in the structure. After 2 pm people were leaving and parking was more available
Its a little bit of a way down those stairs to get to the nice spot. Its picture worthy indeed. For 7 dollars, you get a nice view and time. Just dont hold up the others wanting to look because they let you in by groups of 7, one at a time. If youre claustrophobic, dont go. Its small, enclosed, and might freak you out.
The Cave store is full of history. Lots of historical articles and photos posted within. They have tons of souvenirs for sale. Staff are friendly and helpful. The walk down the stairs and back up is a little strenuous. The view from the bottom and the experience is worth the $10 price of admission.
The gift shop has some nice trinkets and I picked up a souvenir from here; but, the cave was a bit.. meh. I didn’t find it interesting and it didn’t really seem worth waiting in the queue. I was very disappointed by the payout.I’d really not recommend the cave experience unless you want to do every last touristy thing in San Diego. But, do check out their souvenirs and trinkets!!
Went on a Sunday. Very busy at the time. Lots of people waiting in line outside of the store. Took about 20 to 25 minutes to get inside and pay the $5 or $6 fee to enter the cave area. Its an interesting little quick fun thing to do any day of the week. Watch your head halfway down and walk slowly due to slippery stairs.
Ive lived in Calif. my whole life and didnt know about this place. Cave Store, is a century-old bootleggers tunnel and leads through the sandstone cliffs of La Jolla Cove into Sunny Jims sea cave. Tours are self-guided, and approximately 15 minutes in duration which is enough time. There is also a gift store for suviniours with historical information on the walls. There is NO handicap entrance to the cave or to get into the store due to it being a historical building. Caution, the stairs to the cave are steep and slippery. There is currently heavy construction going on in front of the Cave store right now but can still go in. COVID safety is in place.
IF YOU ARE COMING FROM TIK TOKI recommend you get their really early because the line to get in is really long on the weekends. The price is $10 for adults and Kids (3-17) $6. TIME LIMIT is only 15 Minutes then you gotta go so come prepared to take your videos and pics to post for social media. Cave stairs are really cool but be careful cuz they are wet so you might slip. It’s worth the $10 to get the cool pics.
Fun place! Theres a gift store/souvenir shop and then theres the cave area. They have you sign a quick waiver if you want to go down to the cave, at the time of this review, admission for an adult is $5.The stairs are wooden and slippery. You should hold onto the rails on the way down and up. The cave itself is cool. The waves might splash you a bit.
Recently moved here and Sunny Jims Sea Cave/The Cave Store was mentioned on so many pages about it being a hidden gem. Decided to go ahead and try it out. Booked reservations online, about three weeks in advance. Went with my family to celebrate my daughters birthday. Parking was the biggest problem because there is none. After circling the block a few times , we decided just to pay the $10 to park in the parking garage across the street. Walked in to The Cave Store and looked around the gift shop while waiting for our turn. Virtually no one else there. Once the reservation before us finished, we headed down the 145 slippery stairs. So cool. The view at the bottom is well worth climbing BACK up those same stairs after. The real highlight was a huge sea lion sleeping on a rock, not three feet from the place we were standing. Only noticed him because he kept sneezing! Great visit, EXTREMELY nice people working there, and will definitely be bringing people back.
Went May 19th, 2021. The road to get there was closed with construction. Had to park up the hill and walk down to the shop. The experience was ok. I think I was spoiled having been to the sea lion caves in Northern California. The cave here was neat, but there were no seals or seal lions there. You had to go down and up in 15 minutes. Other people were down there with you and it made social distancing harder. The passageway down is very narrow and steep. In some places wet and slippery. Also you need to duck in some places as the passage is short. (And I am only 54.) It was fun to say you did it, not somewhere I would go a second time.
I walked past this store many times and not notice that there is an entrance to a cave where you can enjoy beautiful views of the ocean. There are about 150 steps going down the lighted tunnel to access the cave. Costs 5.00 for adults and 3.00 for kids. Worth the price. Just watch out your return coming back up ! It is hard ! Recommended
Pay attention to your receipt when you buy anything in the souvenir shop, the price tag does not match to what they will charge you! Have to come back to fix it and the lady did not even apologize as if saying its not my job to make sure the accuracy of the receipt!!!
Make an appointment! They are very accommodating with covid, they only let one family of 6 into the cave at once and they give you hand sanitizer before touching railings going down and when you come up. Wear your mask or you cant go into the store. If you are going on a weekend it gets very crowded and I recommend getting there early as parking takes time. They have a small parking lot otherwise there is an ace parking across the street but its underground and our jeep wouldnt clear the entrance ceiling. It was a great experience we loved it.
Its just a very short cove enter from inside the shop. The fee is $5 for kids and $8 for Adult. Theres a 145 steps to go down to the end. I was expecting longer and nice view but it wasnt. I took my children and didnt stay more than 10mins. Its little disappointed place to visit.
Nice experience, but I was expecting more. Somewhat expensive for what it is, perhaps the maintenance of the place, I understand that. But it seemed a bit expensive to me, you cant take good photos for there is against the light, and they come out dark. If you go for the experience, it is worth it. If youre going to take photos, I dont think so.
It was such a lovely time. There were seals inside the cave, crabs were also visible. It was so relaxing. If you are waiting for your turn to stand at the very end of the railing, I suggest checking out along the side in the water. The waves hitting the natural erosion. You can see different faces in different rocks. A truly captivating experience. Also would like to add that the long haired gentleman at the door was very kind and knowledgeable. He shared the history of the cave to those who would listen. The shop is cute, over all a lovely experience. I dont recommend bringing toddlers and babies. The stairs can be wet and they are wood. So I dont recommend flip flops either. If you do have them on at least have some sort of grip on them. (: Its definitely worth the 10-20 minute wait in line. If you get their early enough there wont be a wait.
Welp, it was Definetly an experience. For 5 bucks, you get to go in a cave. So, why not? This isnt something for babies, elderly, Super tall, claustrophobic, or disabled. You start at the top of 145 wooded, damp, some drenched in water, steps. Its dark, and super hot. Its narrow, and a 2 way. You come back up the same way. When you get to the bottom, there is a small platform, and a small cove, with rocks, and an ocean view. When we got down there, there was only 1 sea lion in there. So, we went down, just to say we were in a cave, and felt like the Goonies. Was it spectacular? No, not really. Was it worth the 5 bucks? Absolutely. You get to go into a cave! If you can get past the horrible means of transportation down and back, its really kinda cool.
Omg! This place is amazing! I don’t know why other people would review this as a waist of time or money. We took our 6,8 and 10 year old here. This will definitely be a place they will remember for the rest of their lives. Well worth the money spent to see this spectacular place.
Theres a small gift shop with nothing really interesting but the long stairs to the opening of the cave was unique. Theres barely enough room for two people side by side. Wasnt terribly packed so there was ample time to take pictures at the end. About a 15 minute total experience but I would say its slightly overpriced for what it is.
The store itself is really cute for trinkets and local memorabilia. It has only 4 parking spots so we drove in a circle loop around the streets for 15 min til we found a nearby spot. $10 to visit their cave walkway per person. Also has a little free walking trail outside. Nice visiting spot.
The cave stairs were well kept along with the hand rails. The height clearance near the end of the stairs is low; so people that are taller or as tall as 6 0 will have a bit of trouble near the end of the stairs. The dock at The bottom of the stairs is small and can get easily crowded if a large group comes into the cave. The store itself has a wide range of souvenirs.
The owner has never heard of the customer being right and will try to slander whatever you say in the comments. Just read all the replies to everyone’s negative comments. Take the feedback and improve your business, don’t try to argue with your customers, you’re not 15 anymore my dear. I would stay away from these kind of businesses and owners.
The Sunny Jim cave store is a must stop if you find yourself near La Jolla. Ive lived in San Diego for 2 years now & just learned of this cool place in the last several months. The tunnel cave entrance is located within the nice gift shop where you can pick up all kinds of nice gifts ranging from postcards, clothing, shells, jewelry & more. For $5 admission, you can traverse the 145 steps down the dimly lit hand carved tunnel built in 1903. Its a very cool experience. I felt like I was Indiana Jones exploring an old mining tunnel on the way down. At the bottom of the steps is a wooden platform where you can view the Pacific Ocean flowing into the cave entrance with dramatic wave crashes now & again. Afterwards, you can take a short walk downhill to explore La Jolla Cove with dramatic views of the ocean, pelicans & sea lions up close & personal. Definitely worth a visit.
The store is the entrance to the cave which is one hundred something steps down (and back up). The steps are wet and slippery and it gets a bit cramped so I would not recommend the trip down for those that are claustrophobic. Its only $5 to go down so its not going to break the bank and the history behind the cave is pretty cool. The shop itself sells a wide variety of things including jewelry, paintings and clothing from local vendors.
This place was way to hyped for what it was, however the reason for the 2 star was due to the store associate, one in particular, who gave me an attitude and change the price of an item I brought even though the price was marked everywhere in the store as such. It is one thing to charge the price labeled and my thinking it is over priced vs. charging me a price that was not labeled and saying I was wrong.
Well other then snafus wanting to go here since I first heard about it I was very lucky to be proposed to here today. So it will always hold a special place in my heart. Line was long but moved fast, going down was much easier then up. Dont wear flip flops very slippery almost feel a few times. Very very low ceilings. Absolutely worth it!!!
Don’t rent snorkels from here. $40 with a $30 deposit for a mask, snorkel, and flippers. They don’t defog the masks at all so they fog up immediately, and the flippers are the cheap kind that leave deep cuts in your feet after a few hours of usage. Oh, and they make you return them by 5pm. I went on a Saturday. Much better prices can be found almost anywhere else.
Great spot for tourist to check out. Only $5 for adults. This would have gotten 5 stars but I felt as if I was cheated on the experience a little. No one in the store explained the history behind the cave or how it was used in prohibition. I heard from my Airbnb host once I returned and she asked where all I went that day. About 145 steps down, the tunnel low drop ceilings so be careful. Opens to small platform within cave.
Eclectic and unique store. The walk down to the cave is short but also really nice. Interesting to know this was a place where bootleg prohibition activities happened. You can take some time at the end of the cave taking in the sights. We saw a seal chilling on the rocks. The wait time was about 45 mins because of restrictions relayed to number of people who can go in at the same time but was well worth it.
Well worth the trip but so much for keeping it a secret if you bring someone. While in line people kept stopping and talking about the Cave, ruined the whole surprise. Other than that its still very interesting, totally a cool place to see. Definitely be ready to have some sore legs on the way back up for a little while and watch your step some parts are pretty slippery.
Fun way to spend a few hours. Had to wait in line for about an hour to go into the cave but the scenery was excellent and the weather was nice. It cost $7 per adult and they tell you that you have about 15 minutes to go down, look around and come back up the steps (self timed). This seemed like enough time and the snorkelers and kayakers were also entertaining to watch down there as well. The cave shop was cute with many San Diego souvenirs. The parking situation was tight, there is a garage accross from the cave store and dont miss the entrance otherwise it takes about 10 minutes to circle back around. It was very busy on a Sunday afternoon and was turned away from the garage because it was full but luckily found some street parking a little down the street.
The cave was initially dubbed “Sunny Jim” by Frank Baum, the author of The Wizard of Oz – looking outward from the inside of the cave, the opening profile resembles the cartoon mascot for British Force Wheat Cereal (named Sunny Jim) created by W.W. Denslow in the 1920s. 145 steps. $5 entry for adults and $3 children
The staff was so friendly and were all wearing masks which was great! The cave was very interesting to see and the view at the bottom was amazing! So worth it! Something to note though: the stairs are steep and climbing back up is a workout! I would come back 100% and recommend it to everyone!!
The tunnel is way cooler than the cave.Employees are friendly.$7 for adult … I’m not sure why I paid for climbing down and up the stairs. The view is just as the pictures shown in other reviews. ( impossible to get photos with your face cause the light is from your back…)
I was in front of the lady Susan Dillen (that posted 3 days ago). Shannon was actually nice and Susan was being rude to the employee. Susan insisted her 9 year old sign her own release form which could pose such a huge risk to the facility. Anyways, the cave was okay I think the stairs made it not worth it and there were no sea lions. Also you do have to pay a $7 fee to walk down. Would not recommend if you are claustrophobic.
Its a decent attraction but I wouldnt pay $5 to do the cave walk again. I had a free coupon from a kayak tour. Its really about 5 minutes worth of entertainment and the view from the bottom is not spectacular. But I suppose its fun for the novelty of walking down into the earth. Just make sure youre good with tight spaces. I would go to the store and read about the history and the sea lion that walked up the stairs and spent time in the store.
Absolutely Rude customer service. I tried booking tickets online, it said booking was not available and to call the number listed. I called and asked the the lady who answered the phone about tickets and she said Yeah it doesnt say that online, but anyways we are booked out she didnt even ask me the dates i was interested in. WOW. yes it does say that online i seen it with my eyes. So basically she was rude and called me a liar. I mean you work in a tourist attraction where people call for HELP. Customer service skill is a must. The worst experience via a phone conversation with what looks like a beautiful place. WILL not call here again or visit!
Cool spot. They have a tunnel that goes to a cave that outlooks the ocean. Very cool. However, if you want to do it you have to book far in advance. Especially now with Covid-19. Party of up to six that love together can go down at once. If you cant make it to the cave is still a nice little shop.
The view outside is spectacular, make sure to go look over the cliffs & take a walk down the path. The Cave Store is a basically a kitchy souvenir shop, but the cave is kinda cool. The stairway down is a trip, but once you get to the cave there isnt a whole lot to see. Im glad I did it once, but once was definitely enough.
The Cave store itself was nice. A lot of jewelry and trinkets to pick up as souvenirs. Excited to see the cave, so paid the $5 fee to walk down the 145 steps. They warned to use the handrails because they could be slippery. They were fine. I timed the trip down, looking around and back and it was 8 minutes and 30 seconds. We did take a few pictures at the bottom so we didnt rush back up. Cant stay on the platform too long because it doesnt hold many people. Feel the $5 was too much for such a short, non-climactic experience.
The best part of the cave was the descent down the stairs, which is actually accessible from inside the store and was kind of cool to see. However, once youve reached the bottom, the only thing youre greeted with is a deck where you can peer out the caves mouth leading to the ocean. There were no other paths or areas to explore. The entrance fee was $5 per adult, which I thought was steep considering youre basically paying to go down and back up a bunch of steps. The full experience will take less than 10 mins.
5 bucks is worth the trip down to the cave! People on the stairs are very kind and patient when there are slower people going up or down. Only one way in and out so be prepared to hug the wall to let others pass. Very slippery at the bottom due to water, some sand on the top stairs so be careful! The store is cute, though a little cramped, and the staff was super sweet and attentive which is rare. There’s a path around the side that has a great view too so you can rest after the workout from the spelunking, lol. Loved it!
Cool experience going down into the cave. The stairs may be difficult to navigate for someone who is older and I did think the price was a bit much for what it is. Also not good for people who dont like small spaces. The store was pretty tacky tourist stuff but I would say overall it was worth going once but I probably wouldnt go again.
It was $5 to walk down the stair to the very small landing for Sunny Jim Cavern. Still was nice and cool view from down there. Lots of people coming around in kayaks and whatnot so tough to get a clear and clean pic. Narrow passage to the cave. The shop is good for trinkets and refreshments.
This is the view from Sunny Jim Cave which you pay $5.00 to visit. The only way to get to the entrance is by going in The Cave Store. Its about 149 shallow steps that can be slippery but there are hand rails on both sides. You paid 5 bucks for experiences so take your time and enjoy the view.
The store offers souvenirs of the place. It has a staircase carved into stone that offers acces to the Cave. The way is illuminated but you should keep in mind that everything is cramped and the steps are a bit slippery. They charge $5 as an entry fee, definitely a good deal
Highly recommend taking a tour of the Sunny Jim cave. Our family enjoyed it and 145 stairs goes really fast. The is Sunny Jim beautiful and gives a gorgeous view of La Jolla cove. Also, shop at the Cave Store. The jewelry there is gorgeous and very affordable. Youll find unique, original pieces.

2022-01-02Great day trip with my son. Its a totally unique experience, and something you would not expect to see inside of a store. Through a door you walk down a long set of stairs to what opens up into a sea-cave. Pretty spectacular. Be careful going down the stairs though, they are slippery in places.

2022-02-21Really neat to experience. You walk down stairs in the cave to access a section that has a view of the ocean. The stairwell isnt that wide; the width is just enough for 2 people to walk pass each other in, the opposite direction. Very pretty. I think the cost was $10 a person. Only takes about 30 minutes round trip. If youre unable to access the cave, you can check out the trails and shops nearby.

2021-12-26Its a gift shop store as well as entrance to a tiny cave. Cave has around 100+ steep stairs and narrow passage, nothing sort of big or outstanding view at the end. Its not worth of $9 ticket for 5 minutes down and up from cave. There are beautiful views of cave and flocks of seagulls resting on the cliff from the roadside.A little walk away from this place towards south and you go all the way down to meet seals.Parking is street side.Note - avoid going to this area if you are bromidrophobic.

2022-04-08This cute little tiny gift shop has a not-so-hidden staircase that leads you down to the Cave. It is a unique experience if you dont want to kayak out to one of the caves in La Jolla. It provides a safe experience for your family if you have little ones or elderly to worry about. Caution: stairs are quite slippery. I personally think that $10 was not worth the 10-15 experience. The cave is quite small. Once you get to the cave, theres not much to walk around or see. I would say $5 would be more reasonable.

2022-04-18It wasnt overly special but more unique. Perfect change of scenery! Warning... I do find the cave a bit pricey @ $10 per person. All we did was walk down a very dark stairs. Be careful because the stairs are uneven and slippery when wet.

2022-03-05Super fun for everyone! 🙌 It’s a pretty quick tour of the cave because the platform you climb down to is smaller. It’s a short, but sweet attraction! The climb down is easy but the climb back up is rough 😅😅😅 something like 145 stairs!✅ I’d wear good shoes 👟 The stairs are steep, uneven, and can be slippery!🚨Don’t forget to stay on deck! 😉

2022-04-04Not worth the hype. Definitely not worth $10! 145 steps one way. And not much view there😅gift store is overpricedButHistory behind is amazing!! This tunnel was dug out by two Chinese laborers hired by German artist, mining engineer, and entrepreneur Gustav Schultz in 1902.It leads from the Cave Store, Schultzs original residence, down through the sandstone cliffs of La Jolla Cove and into Sunny Jims Sea Cave. Its been said that during Prohibition, bootleggers smuggled alcohol and opium into San Diego through the sea cave by carrying it through this tunnel!Tours are approximately 15-20 minutes long and self guided. Come prepared to both descend and climb the original 144 stairs (roughly a five minute ascent at a gentle pace).

2022-04-09Lots of cool items, many with a coastal theme. The cave walk is very neat, although the cove itself won’t amaze those of us who grew up along the California coast. Well worth the $10.

2022-02-22This place is great! Down town La Jolla with lots of shopping and places to eat. You enter through the store (small entrance fee) and go down the tunnel to the ocean. Pretty darn cool!

2022-05-07Honestly forgot to even look inside the store but there seemed to be some cool stuff in there. The stairs down to the cave was awesome. Not as long as I thought but it had a great view. Very nice indeed.
