This was the first time i visited this place and I loved it.The atmosphere, the variety of beers, the food, the service, everything was perfect. Our waiter was super nice always checking if needed something else. I invited some friends over and they kindly moved us to a bigger table without those stupid policies of once youre in nobody can join your table.I would definitely come back for more beer and to try some other dishes.Maybe having some German music in the background would give an extra touch 🙂
Oh my gosh, take your appetite with you! The potato pancakes (appetizer) are to die for and you can smell the savory, zesty roasting meat half a block away. The spaetzel is perfectly cooked and the sauce is rich, but each bite of meat - sausage, pork, chicken or beef - is a burst of juicy flavor! They have two vegetarian entrees, and both have cheese. They also have 4 hefty salad choices and another vegetarian option is to go with a salad and a couple of appetizers. The beer is awesome too!
We drove past that place so many times and ignored it, what a miss for us. We finally spotted it and had the most enjoyable early dinner with a few drinks. It felt as if we were in Germany, no kidding. The food was delicious and in a good quality, as you would get in any German bar. The pretzel was perfect. The schnitzel was something we would definitely go back for. They have outdoor dining with heaters.
I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the beer. the dishes that i was not impressed with seemed to be more a matter of taste than a fault of the dish. the menu has a good balance of variety without having so many choices as to be overwhelming. not many options for vegetarians or pescatarians. this place does have a pub feel to it, most especially in the part where things seem a little grimy even when they are clean. all the dishes were spotless, though.
Solid, solid four stars!Great hospitality, warm and cozy vibe with spirit in each restaurant hall we’ve stepped in to (even authentic USSR collectors items) and delicious, juicy food topped with great drinks. Would highly recommend to give Gegrillte Fleischplate $41 a try, that has all the meats to sample on the warm, delicious sauerkraut.Back soon for more joy!
This is one great place for German food and beer. Got the family meat platter and it was delicious. That pork chop was the best I’ve ever had. The beer was perfect. Our server was very good and helpful. The staff from entering with the hostess to our server and the guy picking up our plates and boxing our food were friendly and nice. Service was fast too. My wife wanted the peach cobbler and thought she would only eat part of it and take the rest home but because it was so good she ate it all. This food is as good as eating it in Germany and the sauerkraut was perfect. Thanks for a great dining experience.
We came to the US from Germany more than 22 years ago, and we usually avoid German restaurants (there is no real German cuisine - its actually very different from region to region).Speisekammer, however, is an exception. Their Schnitzel and Spaetzle are very original - couldnt be better homemade or in Germany, and sitting outside with a cool German Hefeweizen on a warm summer day or evening while enjoying this German dish (its actually originated from Austria, I believe) is pure delight. Service is friendly as is the entire atmosphere. Only one wish: please do not overpickle the salads.Note: their take-outs are very fresh and equally tasty
Had the wiener schnitzel sandwich with the salad combo side. Outstanding. The salad was delicious and the sandwich was perfect. Super crusty baguette. Like shred the roof of you mouth crusty. I mean this in the best way possible. My brother got the same with the german fries (just french fries in a german restaurant 😋 ) perfectly crispy outside, creamy inside. Awesome place.
Good food. Just the attitude. First I asked the waiter to put in a TO GO order just before the kitchen closes but he disregarded that request immediately. Then the kitchen closes and the chef sat next table and watched videos on his phone- FULL BLAST.When we finished dinner we had each about half a beer left. Then someone came and told us:: YOU HAVE TO LEAVE NOW.The tone of voice, the attitude: COMPLETE FAIL.When we walked out there were plenty of people still there. But we HAD TO LEAVE.Well, if that is their wish- it my command and I shall not come back.Sad after coming for about 20Years
I can’t rave about this place any more highly. All of the food is excellent. The beer selection and cocktail selection is also fairly robust. It’s a big enough of a space where I’ve never had to wait for a table to sit. Only thing to note is that I went on a Monday once and it looked open, but I got there and I guess they have a pop up Mexican restaurant that’s there on Mondays so it’s not actually Speisekammer (which means “cupboard” in German).
Dear every 5 star reviewer, are you guys okay?We work in a restaurant, so we’re not normally haters but this place is pretty bad. Not sure if it was the decor (5 foot moose + TJ maxx curtain covered benches) or the 10 greasy special menus but it was way too much right off the bat.The potatoes were ice cold, fishy tasting, and extremely oily. We each tried one and were immediately grossed out. 1/3 of the potato portion were burnt mystery bits from the bottom of the fry basket. Incredible how everything we ordered was dry. The potato pancakes were giving potato stix (the kind from a can) deep fried, no seasoning. Our drinks were the equivalent to adult juice boxes with a bit of $4 bottle of Cook’s Brut champagne. Terrible food for $75, we left still hungry and got dinner somewhere else.
Bratwurst, mashed potatoes and sauerkraut was delicious. Schnitzel was good but dont recommend the sandwich as the bread was tasteless and big. Roasted potatoes was a bit too soft but adding bacon was a plus. Radeberger pilsner beer was ok. A bit too light for my taste. We enjoyed the unique beer steins for sale along the top shelf. Service was very friendly and efficient.
Speisekammern is one of our favorite European restaurants in the Bay Area. After 2 years of absence, I found good reasons to dine here again - the end of Oktoberfest and Wiener schnitzel! Started with a tasty Franziskaner Bier, Fries, followed with regular sized Wiener schnitzel. Certainly we werent disappointed - all were delicious. The service was great too. We had a wonderful and enjoyable Sunday brunch. Btw, we ended up with memorable Apfelstrudel and coffee. The last Sunday of the October was nicely carried out!
My favorite authentic German restaurant. I go during the holidays each year because they have Christmas goose. My other favorite is the sauerbraten. Wide selection of German and other beer on tap and in bottles. I get a kick out of the elk head decorated for the holodays.
Good food, great service and love that they have a boot. Beer and drinks were good and taste delicious and hits the spot. Our friend introduced us to this place because our normal meet up was closed. They have been going for 9 years and just introduced it to us recently; weve known them for 3 years. Just happy to have a new place to go to, well be coming back again!
We had dinner here three nights ago and it was just wonderful. Everything from the herbed butter for the bread to the apple strudel was on point. The waiter (Marko) was always there when we needed anything and left us feeling like we were the only ones there. The best of the best of this meal would have be the house-made sauerkraut and the apple strudel. I regret not going ahead and getting a spare container of the sauerkraut. And that strudel, best Ive ever have had in my life. You made my birthday. Thank you.
Been coming here with coworkers for a few years now. The beer is superb, they have a good selection but I always come back to some Hefeweizen (cant beat that on a sunny day), try the boot if youre up for some fun. The food is actually very tasty too, it pairs the beer extremely well.
A good restaurant with delicious, authentic (for the USA) German food. On a previous visit, I had the pulled pork sandwich. This time, I had (& enjoyed) the white sausage platter. The white sausage is a mix of pork & veal, which is surprisingly light. It was sauteed in a butter, chive sauce. It came with a pretzel & 2 types of mustard. The sweet mustard goes well with the sausage while the yellow-ish mustard pairs well with the pretzel. Of course, no visit to a German restaurant is complete without a Maß (liter glass) of beer. I had the Spaten Oktoberfest Märzen, but any German beer in a Maß will do just fine.
Been wanting to go here for a while after watching it on Check Please Bay Area everything was good!!! We ordered quite a bit of stuff just because I dont know when I can get back to that side of the bay. Ordered the 🥨 and beer cheese sauce this was good, potato pancakes with the apple sauce it was ok, then ordered the meat platter which comes on a bed of saurkraut & our sides we chose (which you pay for separately), of scalloped potato & carrot and the potato salad w/bacon. My husband had a dark beer 🍻& I had a medium type dont ask me to tell you the names of them it was in German and a very long word😂 Everything was delicious Im not sure if Id have the potato salad again it was good just different
As usual, my bay area goto for a reasonable priced German meal. The beer selection is good and they also feature daily menu specials. Portions are German ample for continuing that grueling day in the field. Parking is now harder as they have been forced to expand their previously small outdoor seating into their parking lot. Be careful parking in the Oil changers or Tire Shop parking spaces across the street even if they are closed. If you like/love spaetzle then you will really enjoy theirs. Also, their Christmas eve and New Years eve order in advance take off meals are amazing.
Ive been here a long time ago to try the German cuisine. Good. A bit heavy for me generally so Im bummed its not on the top of the list. Its not the restaurants fault. They are so GOOD. Their patio is almost always packed when I drive by. Imagine my surprise when I find out they close Monday and Tuesday to host a pop up restaurant called La Huerta Tacos. My respect for Speisekammer has grown for being a sharing, caring, generous host. Your good deed inspires me to come on an open German night. Hugs!
We went here for Oktoberfest and had a blast. The beers are big and folks are dressed up in their leiderhosen and dirndles. Very festive atmosphere. There was an oom pah pah band that played polka music. There is a dance floor that is just big enough to get your polka on. During Oktoberfest, there are fun contests to watch or participate in. This restaurant has an outdoor beer garden with ample seating and shade. Beer selection is great and features German and Austrian choices.
One of my favorite restaurants in the island. I always take my guests to check it out because the food is delicious and they have an incredible beer selection that makes it hard to choose. Thats a good thing! They have a big patio thats beautiful in a warm day but theres plenty of space inside too.Check it out in Fridays if you want a little live music. A must for anyone visiting the island.
Speisekammer is a local legend and for good reason! The spot does a great job of making you feel welcome by combining amazing meals, ambiance, and delicious beers. Not just good beer here though, they also make some killer cocktails. Come for lunch, come for dinner, come for a beer, come for live music, and you’re guaranteed a good time.
Love love love the food and service here. My German ex father-in-law, says its the best German food outside of Germany hes ever had. He even said it might be Better than the food in actual Germany 🤯🤯🤯 Also, great beer selection both bottle and taps. They also always have at least one Gluten-free beer choice available for those who are gluten sensitive. 👍👍
Perspective from a German speaker who knows the German and Austrian cuisine well:The dining experience was really something great, ranging from food to service quality, and the ambience at the place (in the short dine-in period last year).Starting with the appetizers, the hash browns were a welcome snack and had a beautiful degree of crunchiness served together with the apple puree that is to be found in Europe as well. The soups also had a nice creaminess to them and even though the waiter first forgot to serve them, he came back later with an extra portion which was very nice. For the main dishes, we ordered both the normal schnitzel and the jaeger schnitzel to get to know more of the menu. Needless to say, the authentic schnitzel had a great batter (with bubbles building on top due to good heat) and the meat was very supple. For the jaeger schnitzel, the mushroom sauce was extremely tasty and paired well with another meat of great quality and fine batter. Both sides were excellent: the pan-seared potatoes came with lard and onions to deliver great taste and the spaetzle were also fluffy and light.Overall, I can really recommend this place as it brings together some authentic dishes, an American twist, and a very nice ambience.
First time at this establishment, I am not German but I have several German friends that have expressed to me the flavors that they create , are just like their mothers used to create. Take the time out of your busy schedule to give this place a try phenomenal service excellent food and a real comfortable atmosphere. I will also have to commend our server on his knowledge of the beer, the funny thing about it was not only our server was well-versed in the particular beers but everybody who brought stuff to our table knew what was what and had an answer to all our questions. We really appreciated the knowledge they had. Plus they didnt rush us it was a very enjoyable meal.
Everything that we ordered was phenomenal. We received a really great beer recommendation since their list is extensive and caters to many palates. Their soups are delicious, amazing meat and potatoes. Great dessert and dessert wine/liquor list. One of my favorite restaurants on the island for sure!
We have been many times in this restaurant with our family. Our experience was always good but today was really bad. The food preparation was not adequate. Is roasted pork really boiled pork?. After asking the server he was rude and eventually ended up pushing my toddler son who was playing while we were talking. The owners changed? Management changed? The chef changed? What happened? We haven’t been able to go to a restaurant in months due to Covid 19 and this was a bad family experience.
What a gem in the middle of Alameda. Had a great time with my family eating outdoors for my birthday. Food was amazing and authentic, beer was refreshing.Speisekammer is adapting well with this COVID-19 situation and I felt safe and spread out in the parking lot. The tables are spread out in the front and around the side where the parking lot usually is. There was a Oktoberfest celebration going on when we dinner with them and there was live music from an accordionist and a trumpeter! Will definitely come back soon!
This place did an impressive job adapting to COVID --- turning a strip of humble asphalt into well-placed outdoor dining that feels fun and natural. Nice selections of German beers and eats, which are not usually things I go out of my way to find, but during COVID, its just about the best thing ever to have good food in any dine-in setting that has some semblance of normal!
Went there Sunday for lunch, the restaurant has a unique taste, portions was big and food was good. The appetizer German sausages, cant recall the name was really good, since it was not over salty like most other German restaurant make it. I had the 2pork chop the starch was interesting mixture of flour and egg and, had the beer sauce pork, the pork there was done nicely too not too salty once again. And lastly the best so far was the salmon. Nicely cook and well flavored (not over salty). Service was good, would bring new friends here.👍🏻
So delicious - we got several dishes and loved everything. It’s a little pricey but absolutely worth it, and portions are enormous to boot. All of the staff were super friendly. You can choose to sit inside or out in the Biergarten - both are great. It’s really family friendly too!
The food was really great, the service was really good also. The ambiance left something to be desired. Definitely felt like a sports bar, there was a football game playing loudly, and people cheering often. Not the romantic date night we had envisioned. Despite the great food, we likely wont be going back because of the terrible atmosphere.
Great beer selection, of course, but the Jaegerschnitzel was wonderful, the spaetzle delicious with creamy mushrooms, and the bread was tasty. Service good, accommodating us so we could hear the band, and my wife said salmon was lovely. We did not leave hungry! Worth a visit while on the Island!
Food was delicious! Ive only had German food a couple of times. We had the wiener schnitzel, jagerschnitzel, and schweinebraten. All were super good and we really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. I really appreciated the full flavor of the German food. (Not just meat and potatoes.) They also had food for the kids. The atmosphere was friendly and open. We would definitely go here again.
Speisekammer is a hidden treasure. They serve German fair but anything and everything they serve is delicious. I usually gillett the platter that you see in front of you with some fruit beer. They play live music there if youre into that. The place is cozy. its hard to find and parking is very difficult but if you can manage it its a place that you should dine at at least once. I have gone back over and over because the food never gets old its quality, delicious and affordable. They are online. Check out their menu. If you feel adventurous swing by. You wont be disappointed.
Love this place!! Delicious food and great beer, as close as you can to Germany! On a Friday or Saturday night you may want to call ahead or use Open Table reservations app because this place gets busy. Always friendly service, no matter if its busy or slow, and a Great atmosphere. Highly recommend this place! Its definitely one of my favorite places to eat in Alameda :)
I had lunch at Speisekammer back when they first opened and was not impressed, but my father and I had dinner there a month or so ago and it was immeasurably better! The restaurant had a very comfortable feel - not quite cozy, but something in that direction. The service was not remarkable but it was perfectly acceptable, but the food was great! I think it was the best wiener schnitzel Ive had since they were my favorite food when I was ten years old and living in Germany. My fathers sauerbraten was also excellent -- I might get that next time, though I will probably have to have the schnitzel a couple more times before I branch out to some other entree. I was also very happy with the selection of German beers on tap.
Best German food I’ve found in the East Bay, with a tremendous variety of draft German beer selections to match. The food is pretty good, fairly authentic, and I’ve never left hungry or disappointed. Yes, my Schweinshaxe was a little over cooked *once*... but I absolutely enjoy coming here!
We had a wonderful experience at Speisekammer. My husband took me there for my birthday. The food was delicious, the cocktail I ordered was great and the service was good too. I ordered the lamb shank, which came with some really tasty charred brussel sprouts. My husband also enjoyed the cabbage rolls he ordered. What a find!
I have been here a few times and have always been satisfied. I have had the schnitzel a couple of times and loved it. The beers are really good. The service is attentive. It’s a bit pricey but only because it’s good food, one pays for good food. The ambience is nice and welcoming. They have live music which I enjoy.
Great German cuisine. The curry sausage was amazing. And get me started on the amazing pickled dishes. The one thing that I didnt like much, was the wine beef entre, I do not recall the name. But it could have been an off day. Moderate prices. Great food. Would try again, definitely want to try the beers on tap next time.
We love this restaurant. Great outdoor dining as well as in. Very authentic German dining experience, with a beer menu of merit. So many choices, so little time! All the more reason to keep returning! The entertainment on weekends is excellent and the service is attentive and informative. One of our islands great experiences and a favorite of locals. Dont miss this gem! 💗
My wife and I have never been here but always wanted to try it. Glad we did and well definately make this place one of our regulars! The meatloaf was so good and filling. The bartender was very knowledgeable with the beers. Cant wait to try another dish! No complaints here!
I was born and raised Germany and I go to this place when I feel home sick and need (grand)mother-like cuisine, its so good. The staff has always been absolutely welcoming and friendly, even with our messy toddler they accommodate anything. We have been here with large groups, small groups, kids, and just for date night, always outstanding. We even had our wedding reception here. The owners and staff work hard to help you with any wish you might have.Live music on Fridays and Saturdays always outstanding, their Oktoberfest is a highlight!I cannot NOT go there whenever Im in Alameda.Love the place.
Service was outstanding as always. We arrived right behind a large party on a Sunday, so our food was a little delayed. However the service was outstanding and the atmosphere was very enjoyable. (They are dog friendly here and it was great to see all the well behaved dogs in the courtyard.) Why I can only give 4 stars: Parking is challenging due to the odd street location and the community lines up all their garbage cans on the street (which is fairly close to the courtyard dining area). Food was good but not great. (Again, it could have been due to the large party before us.)
Speisekammer is my new favorite restaurant in Alameda and the best German restaurant Ive been to in the US! The menu is deliciously authentic and the service is great. We enjoyed eating in the Biergarten in front of the restaurant. It was very kid-friendly and there was a water bowl at one table for dogs. We ordered the gegrillte Flesischplatte, one Weisskohl Rouladen, some Käsespätzle and some vegetables. Everything was fantastic and cooked to perfection. The Flesischplatte was perfect for sharing, but all of the portions are very generous. We were eating (and enjoying) leftovers for the next couple of days! Do not hesitate to give Speisekammer a try!
The food is fantastic the people not too much.🌟Update:🌟 We decided to give this place another chance. Yesterday we went back and as always the food was fantastic. Our waiter was also fantastic and she was very friendly and the experience was ideal. Overall the vibe was inclusive, diverse and welcoming. Just like before I would recommend this place.
I went here the other day on my way to Oakland Airport. I went with a friend and it was very good. I think I came one other time with friends for lunch and this time I ate dinner. The waiter made a few suggestions so I ordered a favorite the Schweinbraten - a roasted pork in beer sauce served with mashed potatoes. It was like a pot roast with pork and a sweet and tangy gravy. It was so tasty. My friend had the Weiner Schnitzel, a breaded deep fried pork served with roasted potatoes. She had enough leftover for another meal. We also ordered the potato pancake appetizer which was delicious as well. It was served with apple sauce, which really enhanced the flavor and cut the oil. I will definitely go back. Only con is that parking around this area is tough at times.
Delicious German food. Great atmosphere, feels like a large gathering where friends and family can get together for an important meal. The food is the shining star here. Fried Brussels sprouts, spaetzle, brats and the most delicious sourkraut. Not as efficient as the real thing. We had reservations on a Saturday evening, had to wait 20 min after the original time reserved for our group table. The only part of the experience that wasnt great. Looking forward to returning.
Having just come from living the last three years in Germany, I can say this place is the real-deal. Very good Bier vom Fass and in bottles. Each person in my group had a different meal and they were all top-notch. Well be heading back when we just have to have good German food.
I wish I would have written a detailed review on this place immediately, because I would have been able to describe it better. The food was better than expected, and I went in with good expectations. It took a about 10-15 minutes to get my food, which is a good thing in my opinion--it was definitely freshly cooked. Unfortunately, I was working at the time and couldnt enjoy a beer to go with my meal. The price was good, and they give fair portions. Check this place out! I cant wait to make an excuse to go back to Alameda just to go here again.
This is one of my go to places when I am up in Alameda. All of the food is very traditional German. The best part is the beer. Some of the best I have ever had. The patio is really fun in the summer when it is nice outside. Highly recommended. There is not a lot of parking in the area.
Fun and relaxed place! We went on a Saturday night on the early side (around 5:30) as we have a little one. They have a great beer selection. The highlights on the menu for us were the kleine nurnberger bratwurstchen and the Wiener schnitzel, which was perfectly cooked. The staff was really friendly and checked in throughout our dinner to make sure we had everything we needed. They were also really accommodating with our little girl.
From the sublety of the sour kraut, to the texture of the spätzle, this restaurant was delightful. Be warned the portion sizes are large, even for lunch - be sure to have an appetite before you decide to go here. With the friendly staff and comfortable dining area, this is one of my favorite German restaurants. Plenty of alcoholic beverages or non alcoholic beverages to choose from as well.
My family likes this place. I can get food I dont normally get in local restaurants and the beer selection is great. Octoberfest is a blast. I only waver on the kid-friendly aspect as I have had mixed results with the clientele I outside in the garden. Some folks are OK with kids and others not so much. The restaurant has not really taken a stance and led to a hurried retreat with my family during some spicy language thrown around.
Really great food and service! Even the bread and butter was memorable because of the great rye bread and flavorful green compote butter. The paprika turkey schnitzel special was amazing, the potato soup was delicious, and the employees were very friendly and prompt.
The best German food in the bay area. Spatzle that I might have had in Germany. Beer that I might have had in Germany. Sausages with character. Fantastic sauerkraut. If I were going to ding the place its their not having pork knuckles.BTW, unless you have a big appetite the small portions are not all that small.
Great food and beer selection. Downfall we had a 6:30 reservation but food didnt start getting to our table until after 8 and only half the food came. Then we were told the rest was being plated the last dish came out 20 min after the fist plates were set. Only had a group of 8. We obviously ate once all plates came so 4 dishes we cold by the!
The delicious food was never in question. A reservation of 10 for my husbands birthday was poorly managed. One table was open. The second table was occupied for 45 minutes, during which time 8 guests grabbed chairs and sat at our 4-top. The wait staff were exceptional. Management was approached multiple times. No apology. No alternative.
I cam here in the middle of the work week, midday and it was empty. It was scorching hot outside, and this place was perfect to cool off. I ordered a featured summer spritzer, refreshing, and a dunkel. I wasnt too hungry at this point so only shareable appetizers were ordered. The charcuterie board came out quick and so did the mini brats. I was pleasantly surprised about how nice it was plated. I definitely want to come back here for the dinner menu.
The staff were lovely, and seated my party right by the fireplace. We ate a their amazing herbed butter on some bread, a great big spinach salad, and about half of the chicken schnitzel special before running out of room. The check came with two cherry-filled Hersheys kisses. I came over from SF just to try it, and now its my new favorite German place!
This site is my preferable place. Of all restaurants I know I prefere it most. I always suggests to my friends to go to this restaurant. when I feel like having a fair supper, this restaurant comes straightaway to my head. best and many types of food and a rich menu.courteous crew, and good atmosphere. Not less important, the charge is affordable. I sent my friends to this restaurant with no hesitation.
Wonderful place to drop in for high quality music, food and drink. Easy place to drop in and talk to friendly locals if youre alone, and very accommodating if you want to reserve a table to meet, dine and dance with a large group of friends. The food is always good, the music never disappoints. So gotta give em 5 stars.
We came back on 8/20/19 for a late celebratory dinner. We arrived ale8pm. We ordered the brussel sprouts, the fish antipasto plate and the pork bratwurst with mashed potatoes & sauerkraut. Their sauerkraut is so interesting - very sweet n sour. They have the BEST mashed potatoes. The brussel sprouts were the best weve ever eaten. The meyers lemon Clcreme they were served with was a revelation. Scott ordered a German porter, I had my favorite Shoffenhoffer. For desert we had the coconut creme brulee & the apple strudel. Everything was amazing. Our service was top notch! Even tho we arrived late, the staff was so patient and let us and another celebrating couple take our time. We had a splendid evening. Thank you!
Good food, little pricey but good food and service nonetheless. Wasn’t the cleanest place, cockroach climbing up the wall into their corner tv but it happens??? Loved the potatoes with apple compote. Would be 5 stars if was cleaner. I’d recommend parking in the parking garage and walking over
I had heard wonderful things about this place, which makes me wonder if this was an off night.Upon arrival we were greeted by a hostess that seemed to wish to be anywhere but here. The reception was ice cold. The server was attentive and personable.I ordered suerbratten, which was very dry and the red cabbage was luke warm and and drenched in a gelatinous sauce. So the food was boring, meh. And the greeting was enough to rethink my choice before anything begins.Disappointed.
This German Restaurant has an extensive imported and local beer menu and the bar serves very good cocktails. The menu has traditional authentic German dishes. The seating is like a traditional German beer tavern where you share a large table with other gests but they do have some smaller tabled. This is my go to German Restaurant in the East Bay.
If you like German beer, or have not had a variety of it, this is the place to go. Do yourself a favor and try a Stein with your meal. Had the Jagersnittzl and it was tasty. GF had the Ruben and it was really tasty, solid crunch on the bread great corned beef and the sauce was on point. Atmosphere is good. Outside tables are a bit narrow but its the bay what do you expect space is something they cant waste. Overall an amazing experience. Will be back... Multiple times.
I had the meat plate (Gegrillte Fleischplatte) with a tomato salad (Tomatensalat), and they were excellent. The ambiance of the restaurant is nice, and the meats and sauerkraut were top-notch. The sauerkraut wasnt overpowering but nicely complemented the meat flavors. The two mustards were differentiated by ones sweetness and ones tanginess, and they were both delicious. The entire experience was great, and I would love to go back again someday.
5 stars for food. -3 stars for the hostess. Went here for our wedding anniversary asked to be seated somewhere quiet was told there was no room despite empty tables in the back dining room. Got sat in the bar next to the bathroom and the band. Hostess said she would put extra effort into our stay but did not ever check in with us after seating. Wife found a fruit fly in her cocktail makes me think they dont properly close their bottles. They didnt even comp the drink with a fly in it.
Was very impressed this visit to Speusekammer. The last couple of visits it seemed like the quality of the food had significantly declined and the menu seemed lackluster. I am delighted to report that the menu has been refreshed and food quality returned. We are long time patrons and are glad for the improvements
Speisekammer was very good and has the more traditional southern German style food. They were kind enough to allow slight modifications to the spaetzle by adding the mushroom gravy as an add on. Very accommodating and done with no fuss. Very customer orientated. The presentation done for the apple strudel was nicely done and off course all is good with a good German beer.BTW, The Lyft driver that took me to the restaurant was hungry so I didnt even eat alone! He loved it as well.
My husband and I shared a large Fischplatte for lunch which was delicious. Both the food and the beer transported us back to Munich biergartens we have had the pleasure of dining in. We sat outdoor with our two small dogs who sat next to us on the benches. My only disappointment was that schnitzel is not served for lunch. Guess well have to come back for dinner
I stumbled across this place while wandering Alameda. The bartenders know their German Beers. One of the few places in the states where you can get Weihenstephaner beer. The brats, kraut, and mustard is amazing. Stick to your ribs and comforting. When I am back in the area, I will make it a point to come back
My favorite restaurant for German food in the Bay Area. I have been coming to this restaurant for years and even though I have moved out of the Bay Area I still make it a must stop every time I come to Oakland. Theres always live music on the weekends and the fries are so damn addiction I could just have endless baskets of fries and beer. Every dish that I have tried has always been delicious and everyone we bring with us ends up loving the place too!
My meal was good. My husband order the schweinehaxe and it was not as described. These were overcooked hamhocks. They should have been returned to the kitchen but hes too nice. If it would have been my meal. I would have said something. Overall its a great atmosphere good service and good food. Love the pretzels.

2022-01-01I was craving for a cheese platter, so we ended up eating here. I just wish there were more crackers, although we really like the variety of fruits and dried fruits to go with the cheeses. They do have vegetarian entrees (one salad and the vegetable strudel), we got the latter. It was good but not filling. We also got a bowl of the butternut squash soup (yes that one was good). An IPA beer to start and ended up with a cappuccino.

2022-03-18Went here for dinner and they have a St. Patricks Specials. At first we thought the place will be pretty ratchet but we are quite surprised that its nice and not the usual place youll think for a beer garden style. We had the corned beef and it was good, we also tried the Pretzel and it really is soo tasty, I ate half considering I am not a big pretzel fan. The Applestrudel is also very good! I will definitely come back to try their CurryWurst!

2021-08-17We went on a relatively busy Saturday evening. The staff was super friendly and helpful in suggesting dishes. Their recommendations checked out completely - the sausage and the pork chop were 100% delicious, and the sauces complemented the dishes perfectly. We also got a schnitzel, which was wonderfully crispy. While neither of us are huge beer fans I believe both of us were quite satisfied with the one that we got! Worth the splurge for our college student bank accounts.

2022-07-03Truly excellent beer and awesome German comfort food. You absolutely have to order the potato pancakes. The reuben is amazing. The schnitzel is the best Ive ever had, with an otherworldly mushroom sauce. Its slightly pricey, not something to do everyday, but the quality and flavor are completely worth it.

2022-06-09My favorite German restaurant in the entire United States. Great food! Great Beer! I’ve been coming here for 15 years and it’s always full of happy people enjoying great German food! My favorite dish, and one of my all time favorites anywhere, is the beef stuffed cabbage. So flavorful!! Just as good as I had it the first time 15 years ago when it was only a special. Now it’s a regular menu item and you can have it any time! You won’t be disappointed!!!

2022-03-29The meat plate (fleischplatte) was excellent. Great selection of german beers including Spaten, one of my favorite Munich breweries. Was there this weekend. Had the restaurant week prixe fixe option. Got the pork goulash which was amazing. The pork fell apart easily and had a bit of a butter taste, probably from the spaetzle which was also amazing. The braut plate was great with the pretzle dumplings but not as good as the goulash. And the apple strudel was also amazing.

2021-10-11Exactly the same as it has always been. Satisfying food, well executed and friendly staff. I like the option of having smaller portion sizes which they implemented a long time ago. I wish more places would follow their lead.

2022-01-12Great ambiance and friendly staff. Had the burger and it was one of the juiciest Ive had. They offer no nonsense German dishes and an amazing selection of drink both alcoholic and non alcoholic. Definitely a place to eat if you have a good appetite!

2022-03-09Great experience at this beer garden. It was our first outdoor experience with a newborn and it was PERFECT for the occasion. Unsurprisingly I guess, there were no less than 4 other babies there ;) Food was delicious, beers are great, and staff were all friendly. Will come back for sure!
