Wacko is a novelty shop located on Hollywood blvd and Rodney dr. Wacko is relatively huge store with copious amount of stuff from books, toys, pop vinyl, retro lights, mugs, etc. Also, they have a mini art gallery at the far end of the store. I like wondering around Wacko and browse their cool bizarre stuff. Prices are fair. Parking is limited. Overall, I had a good experience and I recommend this store.
Idk why it has taken me so long to review this place. Everyone always tells me how good i smell.. One lady even told me i smell divine LOL.. Well, the reason why is smell so good is because of the lite egyptian musk i buy from the soap plant. Not only do they have an essential oil bar where you can customize and blend your own oils - but you can also get them in lotion, body wash and other fun self care items! But that is just one of the rad things about this store... There is so much here it is really quite amazing. Everything from the most amazing selection of books you have EVER seen, jewelry, knick knacks & doo dads, vintage clothes, band tees, socks, insence, posters just a lot of stuff.. I usually do quite a but of xmas shopping here, and the gifts are ALWAYS a huge hit! Lots of one of a kind unique gifts.. But this year I am LITERALLY buying most if not all of my holiday shopping here! Which is great cuz you can even schedule a time to shop, and miss the crowds AND the lines!! If that wasnt reason enough.. The onsite art gallery LA LUZ DE JESUS is famous for its decades long history of providing LA with thee sickest topnotch world-class art.. YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST check this place out!! Shout out to the staff for ALWAYS being pleasant! Here is just a couple of fun things i bought from here on my last visit..
Simply iconic. Whether strolling the art gallery (of the most amazing local artists!), looking thru the aisles of vast collections of unique books, or browsing their quirky, nostalgic gifts and tchotchkes... you cant leave without buying something that you just MUST have. Love this place!!@
Been coming here for over 10 years and while some things remain the same, this place is ALWAYS a treasure trove of wacky stuff. With books on literally (and I mean it!) anything and everything. I’m a lover of all things so this place really hits the nail for my happy meter. Even the prices are reasonable for things you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere. It’s a bookstore, Knick knack store, artsy LA must-visit, and an art gallery all in one. You can’t go wrong! Great location too with more and more good food being introduced in the area. Wacko’s ignited the artist in me and I’ll keep patronizing them and encouraging others to visit until I’m dead.
A UPS driver recommended we check out this store while my boyfriend and I were hanging out in the area. People truly need to support places like this because they are so rare nowdays. A space that genuinely cares about the arts and also carries a great curated selection of books. I looked down just one aisle and wanted EVERY book displayed. (If only I didnt have to schlep them all back to Jersey...) I cant wait to visit again.
Wackos is an amazing store that has in abundance of strange and unique gifts for adults and children. Definitely the place to go for that hard to shop for loved one . Great staff friendly and helpful . If you live in los Angeles and havent been there yet you dont know what youre missing. Theres no other store like it . If you are visiting los angeles its a place you must check out .
This is an institution. If you are looking for a special gift or something extraordinary this is a great place to find it at. Books, gadgets, toys, art, scent bar, etc. simply an excellently curated selection! And the staff, OMG friendly, helpful and super knowledgable! Enjoy and have fun on your visit here. Also worth checking in regularly as new delights frequently arrive.
SUPER fun place to do some unique shopping. Lots of various types of items including books, t shirts, masks, posters, socks, etc. Pop culture, all the way. I walked out of there with a cool candle, cards (lots of awesome, unique cards), socks and a key chain. They have some great social distancing practices in place. The gallery next door is closed right now which was a bummer. Entrance is around the back.
My alltime favorite store. This place has a huge variety of books to choose from. This place has been a huge help for last minute Christmas gifts. Also this place has an amazing gallery. Always something new to see in the exhibit and this place is a huge inspiration for upcoming/ inspiring artist. This is my home away from home. From books to toys to home decor, this place is worth browsing and shopping at.
This is a very interesting place to shop - especially for those interested in nerdy, sci-fi, occult, etc. type of keepsakes. Lots of books, ideal items for gifts, toys for kids, accessories, candy, pretty dishes, quirky t-shirts with various pop culture figures. My friends and I roamed around in here for a long time! Definitely worth checking it out, if you want to buy something a little less typical.
All about supporting small businesses, especially during covid. They have a great selection, and it is a cool store. However, everything is marked up about 100% more than you can get online. I know places like this need to make money, and I hate to give business to amazon, etc.. but when the price difference is this great it makes the decision for me. I couldve ordered everything I got online for half the price. My suggestion: go here and get some ideas, and then order/buy elsewhere.
Fantastic and unique place selling toys from 50 years ago brand new in the box, art, cards, and one of a kind books, jewelry and you name it. Very eclectic and fun environment. Large area and very helpful staff. Make sure and allow plenty of time to check out everything here!
DO NOT go here . They put there hands on me. And pushed me out of the store. I was going to spend some money with them but I guess that was not good enough for them. I would advise anyone not to go here. I have never had a store literally push me and almost knock me down like they almost did
Absolutely love this place! Has an incredible selection of rare and eclectic books and novelties. There is also a small art gallery in the back that features mostly great contemporary art.Definitely coming here for majority of gifts for people I have no idea what to get.
This place is amazing! Tons of great books and gifts for others or even to keep for yourself! And theyre all reasonably priced too. I didnt venture into the art gallery, but the work looked pretty great from what I saw.Theyre a little too strict on shoplifting though.
Yes, this place blew my mind. They have the craziest books that you would definitely struggle to find anywhere else. There is an art gallery inside as well with invited artists showing their wares as well. The quality of the pieces where of surprising quality and there is a big return value as the art pieces keep on changing every month. Its a great place to go if you are looking for inspiration.
Fun shop chock full of friendly staff and unique items for people of all ages. Art gallery and gift shop that frequently puts on interesting events such as speaker events, poetry readings and book signings. In the heart of one of LAs most colorful districts - you never know who may pop in at any time!
If youve never been to wacko, put down your phone and drive your ass there. Thank me later. You might want to make sure your schedule is free when you go because you will get lost amongst all the amazing books gifts trinkets and Oddities you will find inside. This place is my one stop shopping heaven. Do you have a family member who has it all and is impossible to shop for? This is the place, theyll have what youre looking for, and if they dont? Youll still come out with something. Its just that damn cool. The gallery inside hosts some rather large artists and always quality work. La Luz de Jesus gallery. On a random side note I met Robin Williams and his daughter Zelda here and we shared a laugh over an art piece. For that wacko will always be imprinted in my brain
Great place so many cool stuff I was surprised to see so many books about cats, I loved them all. This place is amazing they have books, art, toys, collection stuff, skull, bones, t-shirts, and way more stuff. Every time I go i see new art and its just amazing . All the way to the back they have some studio ghibli stuff and its the cutest. On the same street theres a Good will and blue roster(art store) which makes it way better. Highly recommend this place.😊😊😊
I might have only purchased button pins at this place but have been there countless times. They got a lot of weird stuff, tchotchkes, books and toys. There’s an art gallery in the back that always has some interesting arts and crafts on display. Also Funko Pop figures. Can’t get enough of those.
The first time I walked into this place I was almost convinced that I was dreaming. Its my happy place. My magical wonderland. Books and toys and art oh my! Great for last minute gifts, both prank or authentic. Impress a date or a friend whos never been by taking them. Check out their events!
This is the perfect place to find a gift for that hard-to-shop-for person in your life! Huge selection of unique books, art, toys (novelty and designer), purses, socks, home decor...just about everything! Also attached is La Luz de Jesus art gallery with rotating art exhibits, so there is always something new to check out when you stop by.
This place was Michael Jacksons favorite toy store where he dropped major bucks on his children. Amazing toy selection, enormous book section of cool and crazy subjects, pee wee Herman style gag gifts and an ever rotating art gallery that deserves a visit! This place is so much fun!
Its basically a warehouse full of kitschy and an art gallery wonderful place to go and knock out some Christmas shopping stocking stuffers. Also great for tourists or anybody into more alternative wacky stuff pop figurines strange books and Goofy toys are the order of the day if youre looking for some brand-new funny dust catchers this is the place to go
The 1st street art museum in the nation is at least 27 years old now and they have a great book store and cool collectibles and bizarre things. When events and exhibits happened there it is definitely a little bit of a carnival and a whole lot of fun.Ive sent at least a 100 people to go to this place from all over the world and I go every time Im in LA which is every week or two. Also called La Luz De Jesus This place is cool as something for everyone and if youre visiting Los Angeles or specifically Los Feliz...go there.
This place has all kinds of stuff. If you like knickknacks books are Funko. This place has it all crazy books to cultish books to Graffiti books to Pinups everything. They have art in the back now from some local artists pretty cool little bit different. Lots of toys as well pretty cool place and they have great ice cream across the street.
If you are having issues finding gifts for friends, family, coworkers, etc., this is a great place to start. They have books, socks, toys, and an overwhelming number of novel, kitschy, entertaining goodies. You can’t find a gift for everyone here, but you can find things for at least half those birthdays coming up.
This is the place for everything odd, eclectic, forgotten and missed. For someone half a century old (my God... how did THAT happen?) a quick browse through the large store sparks one memory of childhood after another. Intermixed are contemporary oddities that amuse, delight and occasionally disgust, but always in an amusing way.If you are looking for strange, offbeat and silly Christmas stocking stuffers, this is definitely the place to shop. Last year, my wife and I bought several dozen small, inexpensive and distinctly wacky items that went into the twenty or so stockings we had to stuff for our family and friends, and all were accepted with beaming smiles and exclamations such as, Why, I havent seen one of these in decades! Not to mention my brother in-laws comment: Where on Earth did you find a farting pen?Yes, I found it at Wacko.
This is a fun place to visit, especially if you are looking for something retro or an unusual gift for your loved ones with wicked sense of humors. Many years ago I was looking for some hippie door beads, and after exhausting the resources and places recommended by others, found exactly what I was looking for to place over a door. You will find everything from novelty glasses, tiki themed memorabilia, incense, sage, even jewelry and mens and women personal care products. Additionally, there is a good variety of books, bobble heads, inflatables, palmistry statues and books, novelty pens, retro toys, posters, buttons and magnets, mobiles, ashtrays, a wide selection of dia de los metros art and skulls - and more.If youre looking for unusual, bizarre this is the place to go!They do not have a parking lot, but there is street parking on Hollywood Boulevard, and in the residential area around the shop. Parking next door at Goodwill is hit and miss, as there is a security guard who patrols that lot.
Wally and his team are just simply the best. They are professional, they are courteous, and very knowledgeable of the gift basket business. Ive been doing business with them for years, and all my clients and people (friends, family, etc.) that Ive sent gifts to, have always complimented em with the highest regard. I highly recommend Fanciful Gifts.
Once you visit Wacko, itll be your favorite place for Christmas shopping, too. Great novelty gift shop/ art gallery for tourists or to shop for the tourist at heart. The art displayed ranges from absolutely gorgeous to weird to nightmare-inducing. Items for sale include socks, books, art, hats, toys, novelty kitchen/ home goods, novelty gags, and more! Hardly any soap...
Super kookie shop with everything you dont need. It has all the odds and ends you never knew existed. The book selection broken down into weird categories that are reminiscent of a buzzfeed article. The perfect place to buy an off-the-wall gift for someone you dont really know.
There is an awesome gallery in the back of this store. There are an assortment of candies like pop-rocks and nerds and old school candy, a bit over priced but they have art so okay. There are also many tin lunch pails and postcards recently their greeting card selection has changed but they do have some pretty cool greeting cards.Kitschy gifts and collectibles. Theres an incense section with nanchangpa and other zen, ashtanga type scents. For those good girl types there are design and graphic books. The only thing is the store is a little paranoid. Youll have to leave your purse/bag at the front and be prepared to be followed, dont take it personal, they do those to everyone. There is a $10.00 limit to use your credit card and be prepared to show ID its a bit of hassle check out.
Wacko/Soap Plant/ La Luz de Jesus is my favorite place in all of LA. I hadnt been for years and finally went again last week. I can spend hours here looking at the toys, books, and oddities, and piling things to buy (and ultimately putting a lot of it back... because it adds up geeze!) and looking at the art shows they have in the gallery. Definitely give your self some time to explore this place and some space in your bank account to buy the best weird things!
Grate place, for toys .art, and lowbrow art books , some stuff i think the price its too high ,but its LA ... just like NYC .living or having a businesses there are astronomical. But its def a place to kill an hr or 2 , they also have a back area gallery ,def worth the visit if youre in LA
One of the coolest gift stores ever. With the internet co-opting more & more of our shopping experience, a visit to Wacko reminds us why the tactile and in-person visual is so important. It inspires us and gives us scale, an anchored moment in time & space.Everything you never needed is here and things that will change your life - a large, thoughtful collection of books, slanted mostly to art and design, has something to speak to everyone. Toys - vintage & new, household items, jewelry, a curated set of vintage clothes, incense, tiki mugs, etc...if you have a friend who wants a unique gift - youll find it here. The special treat here is La Luz de Jesus Gallery in the back corner of the store. Billy Shire, Wacko proprietor, is a renaissance man; the patron saint of low brow and pop surrealism. You will see the latest work from the up and coming. But dont miss the hallway, a rotation of Mr. Shires permanent collection with pieces by the likes of Camille Rose Garcia, Isabel Samaras, Mark Ryden, Shag, Baseman, Robert Williams & Tara McPherson. Fantastic & inspiring.
My favorite store and art gallery in Los Angeles! Completely unique and filled with so many treasures. Wacko is your perfect location for any gifts or holiday shopping. Plus the art gallery, La Luz de Jesus, in the back features amazing commercial art in LA. If you love the Lowbrow Art Movement, Kustom Kulture, and pop surrealism this place is your dream!
I purchased these earrings because I was told by the employee that they were real silver & it just needed a little polish, I spend over $40 for them. Its FAKE they do not sell real silver. I called to speak to a manager and I was told that they only sell costume jewelry. My fault apparently..Just be careful when buying overpriced Fake jewelry.
Interesting in a vague sort of way, but a bit overpriced, at least in respect of those items whose prices I know intimately. Staff seemed eager to make sure everyone was out before their closing time of 9pm. Large stock, quite a few kaijyu (gojira & pals) around, not my taste but certainly noteworthy.
Gotta love this large exotic, imaginative emporium in the former Los Feliz Post Office building.(check out the fly murals on this building) I remember the original Soap Plant in Silverlake. Going there, after a hectic school day at King Junior High (I bought a mood ring there) I felt sorta trendy, sophisticated, progressive and a little naughty, I feel the same way about this Hollywood Bl. location, but can buy a lot more stuff. Great for unsual gifts. Nice, large selection of art and design books. Billy Shire is the hands-on artistic director/proprietor here. His brother, Peter, is the Echo Park-based ceramic artist. The art gallery La Luz de Jesus, inside this store, deserves and will get a seperate review. Parking around here is MURDER, mostly well-monitored meters. Park once and look at the other cute stores, lots of new, trendy eating options. Sadly, the well-loved Yuccas, across the street, is gone. Theres also a well-stocked Goodwill store, next door.
You may think you dont need a paper doll book of 80s female TV stars or a t-shirt with a day of the dead version of patsy cline, but you would be wrong. This is a great store filled with so many things that yell out BUY ME!As an added bonus, the La Luz De Jesus gallery is in the back of the store.
This place is a gem. Come in for a gallery opening, stay for the books about post-war motorcycle culture. Or tattoos. Or fetishes. Or miniature figurines of pigs on leaves. There used to be some melange shops where I am from, but they mostly got put out of business. Wacko exists here in LA despite poor parking and an odd stock, but thats probably because of how magical it is.If you have an hour to kill on a weekend day, stop in and wander around...
This Truly is a WACKY store! Do you need chili peppers socks, a Marijuana ashtray, a Rubber chicken or a new WHOOPI cushion? Then Brother, this is the place for YOU! They have anything & EVERTHING but small children and the proverbial kitchen sink! The staff is very helpful as well. This place ROCKS!
Best defined as Everything youve ever wanted and nothing youve ever needed. If you are looking for ANYTHING that you might describe as fun or interesting, Wacko probably sells that object. The art gallery (La Luz de Jesus) in the back is well worth the trip as well. An absolute must just to go hang out in, and I can promise youll find at least a dozen things youll desperately want to buy.
This store is amazing! I cant believe its been here all this time and I never knew! I lucked out and found free street parking on Rodney Dr right around the corner, but you can also find metered street parking on Hollywood Blvd.Wacko Soap Plant has almost everything you could want. According to their website they have over 2 million items in inventory, and I completely believe them! They have Mexican oil paper; books on art, architecture, pop culture, erotica; various stuffed animals and figurines; animal heads; greeting cards; Funko Pop! figures; socks and shirts; and so many toys, kitchen accessories, and more! Definitely THE place to go to if you need to buy a present for a friend (especially if they are into pop culture) since they have everything... Dena and I spent quite a while perusing the aisles. I must also say Im impressed with how well-organised this place is.I only bought a Tokidoki Unicorno figurine this time but I will definitely be back to do more shopping in the future ;)
Wackos is a great place to pick up things you didn’t know were missing in your life. I’m curently still using the wallet i fell in love with and purchased there. And thank you to the lovely woman who called me and held onto my dog after he made his way over there. I am forever thankful!
Hi every, Saturday night taking walk to local stores and I was patronized by a blonde wi th h pknk streaks in her hair. It does better me yet wanted to let the community know its not at all the friendliest place to shop. She prejudice once she saw my Jews charm of star David. She can go straight to Hell.

2021-09-28Found this gift shop when I originally planned to visit La Luz de Jesus Gallery. The art gallery is actually inside the shop. You find some interesting gifts or books in this shop, I got some fun designed bottle openers, nicely tin packed French soap and semi-gemstone bracelets for my friends, even a Shark block book for my 3-year-old nephew. You will definitely find something you like in this shop. Oh, and the staff are super friendly also helpful :)

2022-02-21This place is a cultural goldmine and you won’t find many stores like this. I don’t know if they still do the art shows but if they do, you must go! In my area you can’t find anything as cool as this place. Books of all kinds, occult and rare to find items will beckon you to call them. If I could live in this store I would. The people that work here have been here for many decades and they are good people. Get your culture shock here. Toys, clothing and rare hard to find stuff will be here in this gem of a store. I hope they will be here forever. If you have a birthday present to buy for someone, trust me. This is your spot for that unique gift.

2022-06-03It was a joy to visit yesterday. So glad to have been back and glad the store is backing up and running. This is the most amazing store. From their huge book selection to their knick knacks kitchen items soaps and just about anything you can name. As well as things you never knew you wanted. The staff is top-notch, an extremely knowledgeable. On top of that in the back is the La Luz de Jesus gallery. If youre in Los Angeles run dont walk to get to this place. And then grab a coffee in one of the many Cool Coffee places in the Siilverlake.

2022-07-19Love coming here so much! We make a stop every time we commute 75 miles to CHLA. Its become a tradition now for my son and I to stop, pick up some cool toys for him and an awesome book or novelty nick-nack for me or a gift for a friend. The staff has always been incredibly friendly. So glad we fumbled onto this jem!

2020-09-06One of my favorite places to spend idle hours but sadly now the gallery is closed so no new art exhibits and restrictions are pretty tight on how many people can be in the store. Employs followed you around making sure your mask is on the entire time and the air does not work well so it makes for an uncomfortable experience just being in there with the heat.

2021-05-24This pop-culture store is off beat and wild! Books, novelty gifts, and more. An adjacent gallery space with underground art and a cool vibe. Quirky fun!
