Visit Ireland without the cost of a plane ticket or the jet lag. Beautifully designed, Slainte recreates the look, sound and feel of an Irish pub right in Oakland on Broadway off of Jack London Square. As is the case with Irish pubs families are welcome. There is a seating area for meals and conversation separate from the bar area.
Great and friendly staff and nice prices which are way lower than in SF. Outside seating available though not very big. Menu is purely pub type and atmosphere is really accommodating and friendly. Guinness on tap is also authentic. Selection of whiskey is outstanding. Recommend.
Slainte in Oakland is a new Irish bar and whiskey spot with wooden stools, cozy couches and a fireplace with a quirky mix of furniture and people. The space is small, but big enough for grabbing a beer or an Irish coffee. The staff are friendly and really take their time with customers, so be prepared to wait a bit. The prices are higher for an Oakland spot.
I love this bar, but I might be a little bit biased! They have a small selection of beers on tap, a few interesting beers in bottles, and a huge selection of whiskeys and other spirits. They usually have a featured whiskey every Tuesday night, often serving flights of different varieties and ages from the featured distillery. Also, I love that they carry the Irish Herald newsletter. I pick up a copy for my mother every month. Sláinte!
Sláinte is one of those rare moments of life you didnt know you needed. Centered on one of the best corners in Jack London, and with its bright orange paint job, you cant help but notice it. Once inside it feels like youre home. With cozy booths & tables, stools and chairs, and a fairly long bar top, youre sure to find seating that fits your needs. There is also a fireplace that can be turned on (or off due to good ol summer heat) with 2 of what I consider to be grandpa chairs. You know the kind of chair you picture your grandpa sitting in, telling his tales of memories past while you listen intently hanging on every word. The servers and bartenders try and greet everyone as they walk through the door and give each guest the best service they can. Tara is probably my favorite server and if course Joe is the best bar keep in town!! The fare here is quite unique to the area, as you dont find many Irish Pubs this side of the Bay Bridge. Jackie, the owner, has brought to Oakland her Irish familys traditional recipes and head chef Ted is there to make sure each and every dish is the way Jackies family prepared it back home. Dont let the titles fool you though, Jackie is a master chef herself! From the Fish & Chips to the Brussel Sprouts to the Bacon Butty Sandwich, there is something on the menu sure to please every palate. If I start talking about the full array of Irish Whiskys this review would never end!!! Not to mention the Guinness ON TAP!! Full Disclosure though, I used to work here. But even when I wasnt working here I found myself drawn to it. Now I live in a whole other state, but I still have cravings for the Fish & Chips with the house made tartar sauce & (classy) spray bottle malt vinegar. If you happen to get over there for a Happy Hour Pint (of your choice) + powers[$10], tell em JJ sent ya! Sláinte!!!
Top o the morning to ya! This place was great, I had a lot Guinness here and I dont remember much...uh I think they had a giant picture of Oscar Wilde. He wrote that book called Ulysses or something, he might also be related to Bono. Great service, and beer and beer related items. My family says I should go to AA but whens the last time I listened to them lol! Fantastic pub.
This bustling, always busy Irish pub is clearly a local favorite. Small selection of pub fare is good and the drinks are old school solid and enjoyable. Cozy atmosphere in two rooms with a fireplace, small tables and cushioned bench seating along windows, this is a convivial place but not so loud that you cant also enjoy a private conversation. Been here a few times and will go back.
2021 Update, now 5 stars! Why? Theyre consistent, reliable, and I went on St. Patricks Day and the service was amazing for all they were dealing with -- during a pandemic!2018: Great homey place. The food is good, the Irish coffee is great. I hope this place will be around for a while. Its a good place to pop in for a pint, or a meal, or to gather with friends. Why not 5 stars? My server could have been a little more attentive, but its a minor point and I hope to bump it up with more visits.
Great old pub vibes. Cozy with eclectic seating and Irish memorabilia. They have a great selection of Irish whiskeys. We had the fish and chips, which was delicious. They even have deals each might of the week where you can get a pint and an entry for a very discounted price. Definitely worth a stop if you like Irish pub fair or whiskey.
In my opinion its the best pub in the district, and quite a way beyond. The owners have done a great job creating a pub-like atmosphere. When theres a fire going, the céilí band is playing, you have a fine drink in your hand and hopefully some good pub grub in your belly or on your plate, well, its grand.Ive eaten at Sláinte twice now and both times the food has been very good. My only comments would be I would have liked to have more of the all day breakfast - although it was actually more than you think from the small oval plate it is served on. Also I wasnt over the moon about the fish batter in their fish and chips. I prefer a lighter crisper batter and theirs is more solid like a thin pie crust. I dont know if it is intentional and a traditional Irish variation on the British fish and chips Im most familiar with.Today I had the gingerbread with whiskey cream - delicious and just how my mother made it. Id think about getting a shot of something on the side to pour on it just for a bit of extra kick ;-)The sausage roll wasnt quite what I was expecting - but the pastry was authentic and the pork filling although not sausage-like to me was very tasty. Again, its probably just a case of being different from what I expect, not in any way bad. That and a tomato soup of the day was filling enough that I barely had room for the gingerbread pudding...Im very happy Sláinte is in the neighborhood and I hope they have a long an successful stay here - finally a pub I can call my own.
Best Irish iced coffee! Also the tastiest Mac n cheese with added smoked salmon for $16. And Im a Mac n cheese queen! The mixed drinks are reasonably priced at like $9-11. My fave is Gin Ricky (and iced Irish coffee as stated earlier and can not be stated enough)!! The owner is a rad powerful woman. Shes even set up a cute post office box inside that you can drop custom postcards from the owners childhood growing up in Ireland. She puts stamps on em and sends them out for you. Its a really cute touch on a charming go to spot. Theres only 2 tables inside though to charge a laptop from, so if I had any suggestion it would be more chargers. But hey, they might just be going for a authentic pub vibe devoid of laptops and people zoning out on work for hours. Cheers!
We stumbled across this place on Easter. I thought we were going feel out of place, but they welcomed us with open arms. We met the owner and had a blast. The drinks were composed very well. The food was excellent. We even ordered another two prime rib meals to go. Great service. Good atmosphere and good people. Slainte!!!!!!
Speedy service on a Thursday night. Had the special; bangers and mash (though I do realize thats not special for an Irish pub) and it was great. No beans though... But still, potatoes were fresh, gravy was great, and bangers were on point. And they had plenty of brown sauce. Neat place. Doesnt disappoint.
Fantastic Irish pub! Great food and creative cocktails in a laid back, yet chic, atmosphere. Limited vegetarian options but they make an amazing Vegetarian Irish breakfast. Hubbs had the fish and chips and it was good- I enjoyed his chips; one was practically a meal! If youre in JLS, check it out--you wont be disappointed.
Great authentic Irish pub just a block up from Jack London Square. Wonderful full bar with very knowledgeable and friendly staff. The food was terrific from the large serving of the fish and chips to the delicious shepherds pie. We went on a sunday afternoon and were treated to lovely music given by a small group of very talented pickers and singers. Great spot for an irish coffee too.
I love this place. If I am in the area of Jack London Square, it is my first choice for food. Being of Irish decent and having been to Ireland numerous times, it reminds me of a typical Irish pub in Ireland. Their Irish breakfast is the best item on the menu. I usually have it for dinner because it is served all day. They have live Irish music on some nights that is very enjoyable. Overall it is a brilliant place.
My young daughter and I went to this Irish pub to pass the time before going to a kid movie. The fish and chips were delicious. That one order was enough food for both of us. They also had live music and I was introduced to an instrument I had never heard and my daughter was excited to see someone playing the violin since she had just started lessons. Atmosphere, food and cocktail were excellent.
Great ambience and nice Saturday morning/early afternoon place for breakfast or brunch. Full Irish breakfast offered, as well as traditional Irish coffee. Enjoyed hanging out with friends. Service a bit slow and food took a while..BUT they are very kind and accommodating. I personally think the wait times are just more in line with a true European experience where youre allowed to sit ans enjoy your company. Parking was what is expected close to Jack London Square. But all the street parking I found was within walking distance of restaurant.
Newly opened authentic Irish place in Jack London. Very friendly staff, nice setup of the place, large bar, lots of open seating, seems like a very nice casual hangout spot. Was doing swift business on a Sunday afternoon, but wasnt overly crowded, so it was comfortable. Drink prices are a little high imo ($8 for a pint of Guinness, could stand to be a couple bucks cheaper) but they pour a perfect pint. Decor was interesting, with books by Irish authors, and theres a dartboard. The painting of James Joyce is a nice touch.
A friend of mine and I went here not too long ago for the first time. We had heard mixed reviews and wanted to check it out for ourselves. We both were excited to try the shepherds pie but sadly we were both disappointed. It was served cold and tasted funny, like it was a few days old and the beer I paired with it was somewhat flat. Its odd because Im seeing a ton of five star reviews so who knows maybe it was an off night but even then we wont chance going back. One positive note, the service was incredibly friendly and in great spirits, that was enjoyable.
I absolutely love this Irish Pub. It is a short distance from Jack London Square which gives you a nice alternative if youre looking for a cozy, laid back vibe. It has a very homey feel, wooden decor and fireplace which is perfect for those colder winter days. Our server (I wish i remembered his name) was just terrific! We definitely need to come back soon.
First off, pulling off Irish food is hard. This place nails it. Traditional with the right departures, leaves you with an outstanding meal and the best parts of an Irish pub. As a person who was raised on soda bread and eaten all over Ireland I can stand by this place 110%.
Okay. Yumm. Great Irish breakfast, great decor and super friendly service (make sure to ask for Jordan). And, being Irish and all that, the Irish coffee is absolutely to die for. They even have a life-size Oscar Wilde for you to ponder and gawk at while youre savoring your your Irish fare. I totally recommend this place any time of day.
This site is my favorite site. Of all restaurants I know I favor it most. I always suggests to my friends to go to that place. Whenever I want to go to a superb lunchon, this restaurant comes first to my mind. best and all sorts of food and a large menu.great staff, and good atmosphere. Also important, the expence is modest. I sent my friends to this restaurant with great pleasure.
So good!!!! The food is amazing as well as the beer and stout. A really cute environment as well with very nice people. I went there when it was pretty new and didnt have much people in it and went back a few weeks later and it was packed! Even the outdoor seating, so I hope this means theyre doing well because thier fish and chips are too tasty. They even give you the choice to have your food friend in rice bran vinegar or beef tallow, super important to me because I am pesco-vegetarian and would hate to have eaten something friend in need tallow. Great place! Check it out!
Their customer service is prompt and friendly, even to larger groups. My party consisted of 5 people playing a pen-and-paper RPG, and we felt right at home. The food and drink are satisfying, although some of the plates seem to be a little overpriced (specifically, the bangers and mash). Of course, it is understandable considering the location.
Slainte is a gem in Downtown Oakland. Ive eaten here many times throughout 2019-now, with consistently unique food and great atsmophere. So many great dishes, Crispy Brussel Sprouts are decadent and flavorful, Mac n Cheese is the stuff legends are made of, Shepards Pie, Fried Chicken Sandwich, Their breads are homemade, on and on. If you have yet to try authentic Irish fare, do not miss out. Im getting hungry thinking about it.
Were 6 Irish lads on a J1, popped into Sláinte today for some food and a drink, weve been in California for 2 months now and the food here was the closest thing to home weve had. The Shepards pie is reminiscent of what you would get for dinner at home , the fish and chips were also gorgeous. If you get the chance definitley pop in for a true pub ambience and Irish experience
Great pub food overall. Went a few times over my trip to Oakland, and the food was always fresh and always delicious.Appetizers:Their guiness wings are wonderfully cooked and very tasty. Moist on the inside, crispy and not greasy underneath. The battered bangers were very flavourful, got them on multiple occasions.Garlic chips were perfectly cooked, and very thick.Main dish: Potato Leek soup tasting almost straight from ireland. Not greasy like other potato leek soups ive had. Very tasty, very filling. Nearly licked the bowl clean.Same story with sheperds pie. The lamb carrots and rutabega combine beautifully with the cheesy potatos on top. Tasted super fresh and was piping hot for a while. Perfect for cold days.Desserts: Guiness cake was my all time favourite dessert fromanywhere. Not an overpowering beer taste from the cake, it actually has a very nice crispy outside and soft delicious inside. The gingerbread-y flavour gives the crispy outside a wonderful flavour thats perfect with the whiskey cream on top. Tastes just like christmas.

2022-06-27Even if you dont drink alcohol, this is a great place to get some delicious grub. Grub in a pub, say it with me! Anyway, I tried the fish sandwich with potato salad and it might just be the best fish sandwich Ive ever had. The fish was high quality, soft and not chewy, and had a wonderful crispy at times and crunchy at times batter. The potato salad was not what I expected, but even better. The potatoes were cooked to perfection. Prices are more than reasonable for what you are getting. I cannot get over how good the fish was and I highly recommend this place. Just because its a pub and you dont drink doesnt mean the food is not good. Apparently, quite the opposite, so give it a try! Either way, if you drink or dont drink, theres something for everyone. And the ambiance was also great. Reminded me of those Irish pubs you see in the movies. I dont know how traditional it is, but its such a great atmosphere.

2022-06-11It was crazy good here! Went here to do something different. What a great surprise! Shepherds pie, rolled sausage and chips was to die for. And, lets not forget the ginger cake with whiskey whipped cream! Amazing! Gotta go to Oakland to get it though!

2021-08-01Fish and Chips cold and mushy on inside. Perfectly fried on outside. To cheap to have bottles of Malt Vinegar, instead they give you a tiny spray bottle. 13 bucks for a cocktail and they cant afford Malt Vinegar?

2022-07-06The staff were some of the friendliest servers Ive had. There were also some people singing songs that brought in a nice atmosphere. My friend and I ordered our drinks an IPA & Guinness both tasted good no bad aftertaste. The mini Shepperds Pie was very good as well.

2022-02-10We had pints, Jameson and the smoked cod croquettes. Generous pours, and the croquettes were tasty, perfectly crisp on the outside with a creamy interior and a good amount of smoked fish. Service was great too. We will definitely be back again.

2022-03-11Second time here since the pandemic started and we moved away from Oakland. Came here for lunch on a Thursday and sat outside. They updated the menu and unfortunately they only have the full Irish breakfast on the weekends. Now they have a lot of small plates plus a few of the favorites including the fish and chips. The food is still amazing and we had great service.Original review: Great beer, food, and people. Plus music on the weekends. My favorite hangout.

2022-03-23The bangers & mash and fish & chips are very good here. The pasties are ok - wish they had veggies mixed in with the meat. Love that they have Smithwicks on tap, and are kid friendly. They even had a high chair for us to use, and the staff was beyond helpful & friendly. 5+ stars!
