We loved this short hike and cave exploration! Its a bit of an odd drive and I imagine Google isnt leading to the main parking area but still fun. The caves themselves were really cool, filled with bats and breaks so light can come in. I would still recommend bringing flashlights.
Good place to explore through lava tube caves. There are a lot of graffiti on cave walls. You must bring a torchlight, and a bottle of water, and also, you must wear a long pant, sturdy shoes, and a jacket because there is a pitch black inside of caves and some rock clusters in some area that you will have to climb over. Be careful there because there is no one aids you and a mobile phone reception is out of reach if you are critically wounded or helplessly trapped there. Unfortunately there is no exist of a stargate, a portal of time or gateway to another dimensional world in a deep dark cave which I seek for my escapism.
We visited this on the way back from crater lake to SF.1. Three hours drive from crater lake2. Have to walk for 10 mins to reach cave entrance. Follow the only sign board from parking lot.3. Parking is limited4. Once you hit the entrance , the one on right side is main Pluto cave, the right has smaller caves4. We walked close to a Mike and did not hit the end and had to return back5. Carry water and light if you are going deep in cave.6. Pretty doable and you dont need too Much energy but should have strong legs and arm.7. We did close to a mile and back in about an hour.8. While ckMing back from cave make sure you remember the path and dont deviate from main trial, they have kept rocks in deviations to help you not go in that route.9. Once you enter the right side main cave cross the first 100 mts and you will have a opening with great sun light. Very beautiful for pics
I was a bit disappointed. It is easy to get lost and to find the caves. Once inside I thought you can get through but it is actually a dead end so you have to go all the way back. It is completely dark and rocky so wear a potent head lamp (phone not enough!). Very dusty and sandy so be prepared to get dirty. Despite all I had fun.
If you are anywhere around mt. Shasta its worth a few hours to go here. Follow the map to the corner of Bonanza and Teal and its right there. Cell signal was good and the road was ok. 3 caves and one arch. The last cave goes further then we were willing to go. It was a blast
What an experience going into some ancient lava tubes. The graffiti is a lot of fun to check out as theres some dating back over one hundred years.Flashlights, not just a cell phone, are essential if you plan to go deep into the caves. Im looking forward to going again someday. Do not take the Google map directions as youll end up in a bunch of shady pot farms. Most people I spoke with used the an30 road. Use at your own risk!
Takes 30-45 minutes to get to the end. You will know youre there because of all the graffiti. The forest service site says you can go about 1,200 feet back. Before the end room there is a very short crawl section or you can go over the top of it. You can keep going but its all crawling from there on out. I went 0.03 miles past the end room and it took over an hour and it was harder to get back. Bring a good flashlight if you plan to go further. As you can see in the picture, the crawl space is really small, maybe 1.5 feet high. A lot of it is rocks but the pictures its all fine sand. This picture is as far as I went and the forest service site says the tubes originated about 8 miles away northeast. If you go farther than this I would love to know how it went.
We got there at 9am and were surprised no other car was there... A but scary to walk the trail with kids and no other humans around.Google maps will get you to the parking lot.The trail is not marked but if you follow the natural progression of the path, you will find the entry. As you find the initial entry and you go down, you have an option to go left or right. You should take a right even though it looks like the less likely option as it leads you to a path while the left takes you to a mini cave. You defentiely need a light to navigate and having good shoes is also helpful. The feeling of being completely in the dark is amazing and not too scary. Its a very special place.
DONT NOT USE THIS PIN! YOU WILL GET LOST AND ITS THE MOST DANGEROUS PART OF THE CABE THE END! UNLESS YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL ROCK CLIMBER WITH THE PROPER GEAR DON’T NO FOLLOW GOOGLE MAPS! GOOGLE, THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS! DONT TAKE SMALL CHILDREN THEY LITERALLY COULD FALL IN THE CAVE FROM THE POINT GOOGLE TAKES YOU!!
Definitely a fun adventure for people that want to experience something new. Great for big groups or small groups, just make sure to plan accordingly for safety, and definitely bring a helmet and long lasting, bright light source so that you guarantee you are not left in the dark. And if you are the kind of people that like to explore in sandals and an iPhone flashlight, this isnt the place for you.
The 3rd of the caves is large enough that it is pitch black in there. On the whole however, theres not much thats interesting here. I went all the way to the end of the deepest cave and heard a clear hissing sound as I try to get a little closer to the cave wall for a picture. Ive never heard a snake 🐍 hiss before, but I got back to the cave entrance in 5 minutes though it had taken me ~20 minutes to get that far in 😱.
Very fun and pretty the kids love it. Watch close for the little yellow sign you can barely see it. The third cave is very dark and steep I do not recommend for dogs and small children. Take flashlights and plenty of water . If you are sensitive to dust and stuff take a mask .
No signs or directions to get there, but I had been years ago and found it. We got there before dark in the rain, and didnt have the flashlights with is so will be prepared next time. Fr the past I found it very interesting, as you follow where the lava tube comes to light causing multiple caves to see. Definitely worth seeing, but better to not drive there on a very low clearance car.
A little hard to get to. I do not have an SUV, and I was able to get there, just take your time. Be warned there are some people who have dogs that will attack your car on Jennie drive. Even yelling at the dogs did not make them stop. They were extremely aggressive (hair on their backs were up, marking, snarling and actively biting my car bumper). The two entrances to the caves or rather spectacular. Looks like a lot of local teenagers have tagged the inside of it. It also has a strong odor of ammonia, possibly from birds nesting inside or bats. The entrance is down a semi steep climb. Not advised for anyone with mobility issues. The hike to the entrances are not marked. They are not far from the road.
We drove down some terrifying dirt roads to get to this interesting geological formation but it was all worth it. Once we found our way down to the cave we found other hikers and walked around. There are plenty of lava tunnels and caves in the area to explore, just be prepared for a weird drive there.
Scared and came back!!First, Google maps took us to the other side of the caves through a long dirt road, so double check. And once we got to the correct side, and started walking, half way through the hike, saw some animal run away, “Baby Cougar?” We had a small kid with us, so didn’t dare to continue and turned back. Am glad I did.I know ppl are adventurous, but just be prepared as it is wild out there!!
Husband and I found the parking lot just fine using the GPS on our phone. Once we got there, we realized you need to be very careful not to get lost out in the desert. The correct trail is (sort of) marked with red cinder blocks but honestly There appeared to be trails everywhere at a certain point and Im not sure how or when, but we made a wrong turn and ended up wandering around the desert for an extra 20 min looking for the caves amidst a bunch of large Rocky structures. We eventually retraced our steps back and realized we made a left when we should have gone right. You basically walk all the way straight out from the parking lot and when you get to the end of a wide Rocky path, you turn RIGHT and the caves are right there, sunken into the ground so the entrance is a bit hidden until you reach the edge. It is very Rocky inside and outside the caves so I would recommend proper hiking shoes and enough stamina etc to manage an uneven trail. The caves are amazing and a highly spiritual /sacred place. We were there all by ourselves on a Wed morning.
Its right off the highway. Short little walk to get to the main cave entrance . Moderate caving challenge. There are places you can hurt your self. Bring plenty of flashlights and battery there is one place where you can get confused and go in circles if you light goes out. Try not to kick up the dust in the entrance, it can carry bad diseases. Do not pick up rocks, artifacts, bear grass, or anything but garbage. It is a must if you like spelunking.
Really awesome place to stop . Just take in consideration that that there will be very low level hiking & bring some type of flashlight . The left cave is allot shorter than right cave . The left cave I believe has historical importance , the right cave is very deep and dark . So come check out Plutos Cave ...
So if you have never been here bring FLASHLIGHTS WITH GOOD BATTERIES.....Once you get passed the spray paint graffiti it is an awesome experience...follow the trail to the end and to the smallest hole you get to at the end of the lava tube... you havent experienced darkness until you get to the end
It may be easy to get lost. As of September 2018, please note that the Google Map route guidance does not point to the official trail. On Google Map, enter the road from A12 to Plutos Cave (there is a sign called Pluto Cave, which is displayed as 43N30 on Google Map), and there is a parking lot and a sign at the end of the unpaved road 2 to 300 meters ( Photo). Follow the trail in the direction of this photo (maybe you can easily get lost) for about 500 meters and you will find Cave. The Cave on the right side follows Sky Light, followed by a pitch-black Cave. Personally, its hard to say that its safe, and the Park Ranger I met by chance said that Flash Light (also a spare battery) was essential, and that snakes (sometimes poisonous snakes), bats, and Bandit were also careful. Please be careful about safety.

2021-08-27Wow! Was pleasantly surprised by this cave system and surprised one of the park services have not set something up here. It would make for a great campsite. Plus, that would help protect the caves from the ignorant who think nature is a place for their sad graffiti. Bunch of losers. Then again, the park service just ruins it in a different way and would probably charge.Anyhow the caves are great, nice view of Mount Shasta, and the terrain is pleasant as well. If your are driving by Pluto’s cave it’s definitely worth the stop.

2022-06-26This is a really cool cave. Looks like an old lava tube. Some cave-ins, but when you get to the tunnel with no cave-ins its crazy big. Brings lights.

2022-01-10Very cool place to explore. Use caution! Some spots are quite treacherous. Its not a place to run wild. Great experience though. Its quite cold in the cave. Make sure you have plenty of light. A headlamp is recommended.

2020-11-03Caves are awesome! They were not too bad of a hike too. We explored all 3 of them (not sure if there are more). It was very dark but the beams of light midday were surreal. Would love to come back again soon.

2022-03-12The caves were very interesting but not for those who find it difficult to maneuver over dangerously sharp lava rocks. Trails to the caves are not clearly defined and my husband and I got lost for 30 min.to the caves, and even on the way back to the parking area. Our Google map was no help, infact it needs adjusting. Scary to be lost when the suns going down. My advice BREAD CRUMS AND THE GLOW STICKS to guide your way_Good Luck🙏

2020-08-28Pretty much the best cave Ive ever been into and explored. It got too dark for our flashlight so we had to turn back because we didnt know how far the cave went down. Definitely a place worth visiting. Watch out for rattle snakes!

2021-05-06Bigger than we expected. People visiting can expect zero signs, but worth investigating. Sadly a lot of graffiti and the overpowering stench of urine! There are some who do not respect a sacred site, bring flashlight, and expect rock and boulder scrambling

2022-04-25Nice volcanic caves. People party in here tho so it reeks of urine. Also its not very maintained so it seems to be prone to partial collapses so enter at your own risk. Pretty caves tho
