This is the first time I have been at Paramount Ranch since May of 1979 at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire. The site looks very different from what I remember. I found walking around the site and I miss the Western Set. I also seen many changes due to the Wolsey Fire. Yet it was very nice to come up here again. I will be back here again.
We attend the Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest here and it is a wonderful location for it. Sadly most of the buildings burned down in the Woolsey Fire. The last event we attended there was called the Tailgate Jam and it was a benefit to raise funds to rebuild the structures lost in the fire.
So sad to only see 2 buildings (train station & church) left standing from last years fire. This Western town is loaded with filming history and is still enjoyable to walk the grounds. Nice to see banners displayed on the chain link fence of some of the great movies and TV shows that were filmed here.
Very nice place. Old western town is well maintained and can see lots of facade used in Westworld esp S1E9. There are some nice trails you can explore depending on weather. Parking is ample. Keep in mind there is no food or anything around the area so pack your own food and water and do a nice picnic. Lots of photo-op.
Paramount Ranch is completely destroyed after the Nov 2018 Woolsey fires. We visited before the fires and luckily had the chance to see the old western town... it is so sad to see everything gone! The chapel survived the fires.... the area is still a beautiful site to see!!!!
Im always looking for interesting things to see with my toddler, and this is a place we frequent. It is a park with many trails, but I havent done those yet... The main feature to this place is the Old West ghost town movie sets!!! Thats right, you can visit the town used to film much of Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman!!!If youre not hiking, this is a pretty quick visit, as you cant go inside any of the buildings, but thats okay. Its still super cool! My son loves running around in the gazebo! Taking pictures in front of the saloon or sheriffs office is very fun too!Youll probably see some folks taking a tour on horses! That is an option too. One time I went into the offices there to ask about it and the gentleman was very nice and able to give tons of info about the place! He actually took my son and I over to the fire station right in back of the office and showed us the facilities there! The fire station was actually built as a place to build sets for Doctor Quinn, and then turned into a fire house after filming stopped. They still film things here pretty often though. Theres also a large structure with tables to rent this out for events. Its definitely a cool thing you should visit at least once if you live in LA or are looking of things to do with children.
Most of the structures seen here burned in the Woolsey fire. Including the beautiful oak trees. I think the church structure remains. A lot of film history destroyed. Very Sad. I believe the state and local governments plan is to rebuild. Assembly member Richard Bloom is hoping for a fund raising initiative according to Curbed Los Angeles, in a article by Chris Eggertsen.
Beautiful landscape, especially with the super bloom and butterfly migration in full swing. Western Town was destroyed by the fire, but its very hopeful to see the restoration in progress and the beautiful views. Parking was also easy, and I love that its dog friendly!
Well, the entire place has burned down, but it is absolutely still worth a visit. The area is recovering very well thanks to the rain, and it’s an eery but interesting hike through the disaster that was the 2018 Woolsey fire. Park service buildings have all survived, and they’ve made it clear that they will rebuild.
Beautiful even after the firestormParamount Ranch, near Agoura Hills, California, was the site for many western movies, television shows, and MASH. Sadly the fires of last year decimated the filming venues and much of the plant life. But with this years rains the area has come alive with new vegetation, and swarms of butterflies enjoying the flower blooms. Visit now to see natures show, rather than man-made shows. Watch life sprout anew, and appreciate the critical role that fire plays in the ecosystem.
A really cool place to go and visit as plenty of movies and shows were filmed here unfortunately as I write this most of it is burnt down but I hear theyre rebuilding it. Very family friendly as its all flat and the walk to the town is very short. Totally worth the drive out
Make sure to bring extra water and have a trail map saved on your phone (cell service can be spotty). The trails are wide and clear, you might run into a few horse tours while youre out there, theres plenty of parking, you cant go into the buildings but walking around the little town is pretty cool, plus you might recognize some of it from TV! Great mix of old Hollywood and hiking!
It is such a shame that most of the Paramount Ranch was destroyed by the Woolsey fire last year. Although the church still stands oh, it is one of just two buildings left. I visited in August of 2020 which was one year after the fire it looks like they are going to rebuild the western town so I imagine its going to be really cool when they do. This is an excellent place to come in hike I would definitely recommend even though the town burn down!
Although the area is beautiful (but very dry) most of the buildings are gone. The Parks department seems to be in the middle of a big restoration project so it looks like this will be an area to revisit in a year or so. The restrooms, however, were very clean and fairly new. They had several stalls and a large handicap stall in the womens plus a family room. Very good!We didnt opt to take a horseback ride as it was a bit warm. At least the horses were in the shade inside the trailer with a breeze.
We went horseback riding here with Malibu Rides. The area is spacious, bathrooms are super clean ( i know, i was surprised too ) and the views were lovely. Unfortunately the buildings seen in some of the photos here did burn down recently so theres really only the train station and a chapel. Great hiking area and even a stream on this loop too. Will definitely have to hike through here again when we get the chance :)
I was fortunate to have visited Paramount Ranch several times before the Woolsey Fire. It’s such a beautiful place, and the loss of the historic Western Town movie set is devastating. But, still come and visit, leave a donation towards rebuilding this precious place, enjoy the grounds and surrounding landscape, and envision what it was like in the past! As of January, there are many canvases with photographs of what the ranch looked like through the years. Hopefully, when it’s rebuilt, it will reflect what once was, and what can be! This place is a gem. The church still stands, and is just simply gorgeous.Pack a lunch! There are plenty of picnic tables. There are also restrooms on the premises.Plenty of parking.Gets REALLY hot during the summer months. Bring water.Dog friendly!! Must be leashed.Permits easily obtainable for commercial photography and films.
So beautiful! I’ve lived in Los Angeles for 20+ years and never knew this spot existed. (It was built as an old western town for film shoots.) A great location for hiking, horseback riding, walking around and looking at the beautiful facades. The trees and streams are picturesque. There’s also a venue here for music or parties - in a big barn. This place is fantastically out of the way and from another era. Very tranquil. I will be back!
Used to come here all the time when growing up, and it was so sad to return and see the fire damage from the Woolsey Fire in 2018. Its almost a year since then and the structures have been left as they had fallen, with little to no cleanup. Quite a sobering experience to walk around and see the remains, but it was nice to see they put up posters commemorating the set and the movies/TV shows that were shot there.
Awesome piece of movie making history here! Bummed that I didn’t get a chance to see it all before the Woolsey Fire wiped out all the structures Nov. 2018. Such a pretty area to do some hiking as well. Glad to know that there will be some rebuilding on the site in the future, and hopefully some new movies will be shot as well.
I love hiking in Paramount Ranch, there are a variety of trails, mostly flat. There are various trails all over the ranch. You can make a loop. There are shady parts on most of the trails on the outer rim of the park, in the center the trails do not have any shade. It is perfect for hikers, joggers, runners and equestrians as the trails are mostly flat and wide. The scenery is beautiful. Old town is fun to explore.
This was a great western town to explore as a movie set. Also the surrounding hills. Now burned hills and most of the town is gone. Only the chapel and railroad stations sets survived. Still open and the flowers are starting to grow. It should be a great show in a few months.
Such a fun place to visit, especially for fans of Westworld. It feels very surreal driving in and recognizing the surrounding scenery. If you’re visiting make sure to bring water, sunscreen, and watch out for snakes. We came across one in its hole while heading to the church.
This is a very small town and only have 5 or 6 buildings here. And they are not real buildings, just some fake thing in order to shot the movie. The west world also shot here. You can enjoy a different hiking experience here. All hiking trails here are easy and suitable for both kids and seniors. You can also choose to ride horses here, but I dont know how much it cost.
A good place to visit and take out-of-town friends. A lot of movie history, and movies and TV still made there. Good hiking trails. Scarce amenities. Better bring your own food and drinks if you plan to be there any length of time. There is a small ranger station at the entrance with maps of the area. I suggest you search the internet for history of the ranch.
Unfortunately the movie set buildings were reduced to ashes in the Woolsey fire in 2018. However the Park Service has created a number of informational photos and signs arranged around the ruins to provide a good sense of the film industrys history there. If nothing else, its worth a stop to get an appreciation of the destructive power of fire and to guess at the purpose of the remaining artifacts.
Beautiful fun. Getting married here too!!Update:Due to the fires in Agoura Hills, the morning my fiance and I were going to get married, the place burned down. They worked with us immediately and solve any issues right on the spot unfortunately my fiance and I still havent been married we need a venue something close to what Paramount Ranch was like any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Wow! What a gem. A bit of accessible Hollywood history. As a fan of Western movies visiting this location brought a smile to my face and wishing I was 9 again to pretend I lived in the wild wild west.Dont expect to make a day out of visiting this place; most likely youll spend 30-45 minutes here. However, you can follow any of the trails and make a hiking 1/2 day out of it. Visit the rangers station adjacent to parking for a map to the trails. And as always, bring comfortable shoes, lots of water, sunscreen and a hat if hiking on a sunny LA day. Oh, and watch your step as you walk through the structures.
It burned down from the Woosley fire, the studios havent been rebuilt it yet, even though it has been a location for them since the 40s and they have made billions from all the movies and TV shows filmed there. Big shame, the history of this place was incredible but it just doesnt look great for western themes in todays world and society. Money is the only thing that matters to them, screw history and the locations that they have exploited.
I cant believe this place burned down after the Malibu fire (2018). Now only the church is left standing. The place transports you back in the wild west with the saloons and sheriffs station and everything. I believe this was where they shot scenes from HBOs Westworld. Now its in ruins from the fire. I hope they rebuild it with the same feel and nostalgia of the wild west.
This is the place where they film dr. Quinn Medicine Woman! There are countless westerns are also filmed here in the 70s and 80s as well. Probably way back to the 50s and 60s too. What amazes me is that the visitors here tend to be very respectful, and allow others to enjoy the good old west. Buildings are still intact, and in some cases you can walk inside of them.Parking is relatively easy and free. If you can make a donation, please do. It helps not only keep the buildings looking great, but keeps everything free for everyone. :-)Bring a camera, youll want to take photos! Can be a little Dusty from time to time. I wouldnt wear your best Nike Air Jordans, if you know what I mean. Everything is on dirt. So keep that in mind.
I am a fan of the movie industry, especially westerns, and Paramount Ranch has a long history in this area. The site is easily accessed from paved roads and is only a few minutes south of the 101 Freeway. You can stroll through the sets (except when filming is in progress) and take in the ambiance of that old west feel. The site has ample parking and is handicap accessible PLUS there is no cost to enter.Sadly though I heard (search the Paramount Ranch web site) that Paramount Ranch burned down in the Woolsey Fire in November 2018.This is a beautiful place where Dr Quinn Medicine Woman, ,Herbie, and more recently West World, were filmed. Do your research, take the drive (because the City of Augora Hills is also neat to visit) and see what Paramount has to offer. If the sets have been destroyed or damaged Im sure the film industry will rally the troops and rebuild. Also enjoy a drive through nearbyMalibu Canyon.
A great time looking thru different telescopes. Event held by The Planetary Society and volunteers who brought their personal telescopes so the public could take a look at planets and celestial bodies up close and personal. It was a completely free evening and I thank Bill Nye and all the volunteers for the wonderful time!
Definitely a hidden gem. Great place to spend an hour or two strolling through the Western town or hiking the trails. No facilities here besides the ranger station and bathrooms. What do you expect? Its FREE! And wear old shoes because you will kick up a lot of dust.
Youll get a kick out of walking around the historic movie town and area where Hawkeye and Hot Lips plied their craft, not to mention Dr. Quinn and the American Sniper.Parking was easy. We then began our visit at the ranger station to get our bearings, pick up a park map, and refresh our water supply. It can get quite hot here, even during the spring and fall.Poking around the facades and buildings is interesting, especially the old jail which provides the perfect setting for a photo op of your party -- behind bars!An enormous spreading (oak?) tree in the center of town creates welcome shade when the temperature is in the red.Take note of the marked trails, and dont just blindly follow the path on the far side of the town, which is not a maintained trail. If youre looking for a cool place to eat, there are some great restaurants on either side of the freeway on Westlake Boulevard, a little further up the 101.The shopping centers where they are located have tight parking, so try to avoid the super busy lunch hours by going early or late. Our two favorites are 1) Mendocino Farms, with great farm-to-table sandwiches and salads, and 2) the cafeteria-style Lemonade, which offers a highly eclectic variety of entrees, sandwiches, salads and desserts -- unique food you wont find anywhere else.Sometimes we go just to try their inventive lemonades, infused with various fruits and herbs such as watermelon basil or blueberry mint. They even have a sugar-free version each day. Both places offer tasty gluten-free dishes (not just salads) and feature indoor and outdoor seating options.
An Official Hiking Review:A true hallmark of the community, but was unfortunately destroyed. In the fall of 2018, fires ravaged the Malibu area and blew through this spot. It never stood a chance. A moment of silence for a spectacular hiking location that was taken so terribly from us.

2022-03-05Such a beautiful and serene place to visit. We hiked the Paramount Ranch Trailhead loop. And it was spectacular! The views of this place were breathtaking. We really enjoyed our hike. This trail I would rate as moderate because you do encounter a few steep hills and let me tell you, its a work out! I loved it, you do break a sweat. So if you enjoy a challenge and appreciate the views, this is the place for you!

2021-09-25A lot of the stage sets have burned down in fires over the year so not much is left. However, the church shown on Westworld is still here. The church is at the entrance so you really dont have to venture much at all. There are some okay trails here, but they dont really end in any good views or landmarks and are more loops. So, it was a bit underwhelming for me. There may be possible gems that Im unaware of tho...Nonetheless, its good if you need to get out and want something simple.

2021-07-28I used to go hiking here. It was also an interesting place to take my groups on adventures. It was one of the few places around LA where visitors could experience a western town!My first time returning since the COVID-19 crisis, I was somewhat disappointed. The western town buildings were burned and taken down after the 2018 Woolsey Fire. All that remains is the depot, though now includes an old western style church. The surrounding trails were still passable, tho much of the land was ruined, void of the unique vegetation that made it good for wilderness hikes. The little Media Creek Trail, just beyond the parking lot and sand pit, is still intact! Also, the horse riding and rental services are still in action, an important part of the experience, when the physical town is gone! There’s a more modern, tho rustic County Fire station building next to the parking lot area. The end closest to the parking lot has restrooms. There’s picnic tables and trash containers located by that end as well.

2021-09-17Its very peaceful and quiet. Lots of wildlife, a few hiking trails (the Rattlesnake Dog Training Course banner 2 miles down the road deters me from hiking these trails. I have driven past this place on my daily commute, from September 2016 to February 2019, but didnt stop once. I believe there was once a town here, but its gone, burned in the Woolsey Fire, 2018. Beautiful scenery, and the weather is usually fantastic. Many mornings, this area is covered in marine layer from the Pacific Ocean. Also, one of the coolest sections of Mulholland Highway is just around the bend. Turn right out of the park, then left at the stop sign. Hold on tight!

2022-04-21Beautiful area to hike with a lot of history. Unfortunately the fires destroyed some of the older structures

2022-01-16The trails are very nice. It is beautiful. The reason it only gets 3 stars is because they removed the western town, but havent updated the website. I drove 30 min to show it to my kid. There are many other beautiful trails closer to my house. I felt mislead.

2022-02-22The church is still standing. The Western Town is still rubble. Its been over a year after the fire, but it hasnt been cleaned up. You can hike and bike. Nice bathrooms are available. We walked into the rangers office to ask questions about the town, but no one was at the desk. Maps of the area and nearby parks were available, so we took some. I give them 5 stars because of the location, views and nature.
