First time renting from national. Should of changed to them years ago. Rented for a weekend in San Diego which is a busy time. They had run out of full size and bumped me up to executive class car. No muss or fuss. Right to the car and out in no time. No standing at the counter or getting a marginal car. May be a little more at times but to not have to put up with the hassle of the low-end companies well worth it.
National car was clean, prepared to be loaded, easy to walk directly to cars and skip the lines, and drop off was perfect. I have rented cars from other places with the gas tank not full, stuff left from the previous renter, and not what I requested (in terms of car/size type). I was pleased. Thank you.
National is the only rental agency I will do business with if I can help it. The app is super easy, rental couldnt be more simple and every employee from West Palm FL to San Diego have always been respectful, helpful and friendly. Jesus helped me the last time checking out and had my trunk unloaded for me before I even exited my car. Above and beyond. Thank you for making my trips easy!
Great experience in the beginning. We had so many to choose from. Price was great too. But when I turned the rental in, I had left something valuable in the vehicle, road the shuttle to the airport which was only 7 mins away but as soon as I went back right away from the airport to the rental place, they said my item was not in the vehicle. When someone approached us while returning the vehicle and there was multiple vehicles there. You mean to tell me that it was stolen from a random person?! I clearly think it was that employee who took it that approached us while returning the vehicle. Wasted my time going back and forth which was right away too and I barely made it back to my flight. Overall the experience before turning it in was great. But not the after.
Not a great experience this week with National. Forget about what you think in them being partners with Enterprise. Whatever benefit they market from this partnership is lost because their systems do not communicate. I experienced a mechanical issue with my Executive level car and was told to go to the Enterprise location within a mile of my location. The young man at Enterprise knew nothing about my situation and reluctantly gave me the lowest end car on their lot. I could barely get into the car which made for a difficult last day having recently completed two back surgeries. Also, the new car did not have Sirius XM which I had paid for because the Enterprise rep could not see my ticket or access my account to know I had paid for it and therefore could not turn it on. He could not even access my account??Disappointed this time. I submitted summary of my experience to customer care and no action 2 days since.
I have been a long term National Car Rental customer for my business travel needs and use their services 2-3x/month. Overall, I have been pleased with their customer service as well as their cars. This last rental was in San Diego and unfortunately, the vehicle rented was a bit sub-standard for what I have grown accustomed to with National Car Rental (hence my giving only 4 stars and not 5). The vehicle was more dinged up than I am used to from National Car Rental (small dings on the doors and a couple larger ones on the rear bumper). When I picked up the car, I pointed this out at the gate and was told that I could obtain a different car if I would like, but that the dings were too small to be of concern to National Car Rental (if I chose to rent the car). Being in a rush I chose to rent the car. Later, I found the seat warmers did not work in the car as well.To National Car Rentals credit, when I returned the vehicle the person that checked the car back in was very pleasant. They noted that the seat warmers were having issues. Additionally, they did not seem concerned about the dings in the car beyond mentioning that because San Diego is such a popular tourist destination, sometimes the cars can get a bit more beat up than in other cities.
We recently went on a family trip and there were no cars available in the Emerald Aisle. The customer service rep was very nice and gave us an upgrade for the same price. We appreciate that they acknowledged that the lack of cars was their responsibility and they made is right.
We have been members of National Car Rental (Emerald Club) for many years and the service and car selection never disappoints! We walk right out to the lot, choose a car and we are on our way. Our home base is Houston. Recently, we were in San Diego Airport and received excellent care and service. Returning our car each time is seamless and takes very little precious time. Thank you for providing exceptional service and vehicles all these years every time we travel.
I signed up for the Emerald club after the car rental was complete. Before picking up the car, I was able to link the car rental to the account. The rep at the rental counter was very courteous. He handled the rental process smoothly and without a hassle.Being an Emerald club member allowed me to pick any car in the isle.Smooth process.
Being able to walk straight to a rental car and go is extremely convenient and I like the ability to choose which car I need for that particular trip. Only 2 stars because they tack on a ridiculous amount of extra fees above what was quoted when reserving the rental. My bill went from $180 at the time of booking to $290 when I returned the car with a full tank of fuel! Over $100 dollars in fees?! Absolutely ridiculous. If they had been upfront about the fees I would have rented somewhere else.
At the San Diego Rental Center, we were originally booked with another rental car company. We were probably 40th in line to pick up our car wondering what was wrong...when they announced their computers had crashed. Our son recommended National Car Rentals as he was a member, and there was no line.We had the easiest rental and return ever.No wait, excellent service. The rental rate was less than $5 per day more! I am now a member. Thank You, National for taking such good care of us!
I switched exclusively to National in the past year after having one unpleasant experience after another with the other large companies. Customer service is always pleasant no matter the time of day. Picking up a car early or extending the rental is hassle free. You may pay a slight bit more than with the other companies, but its worth it IMO.
I typically rent cars from National because the process of picking up/dropping off their cars is so seamless. Recently, I also learned that their customer service cannot be beat. While visiting San Diego, I parked my National rental car with a valet, who promptly lost the keys. Panicked, I called their Roadside Assistance service and explained the situation, fully expecting to waste the entire day on the phone dealing with the mess. The agent was extremely helpful and arranged for both a tow of the original car and transportation back to the airport to pick up a replacement vehicle. The National greeter at the airport was just as understanding and helpful, and she promptly got me back behind the wheel. Im quite certain the whole process took less time than Ive spent standing in line and renting a car normally from several other companies. Thanks, National, for salvaging my trip!
Car rental using the Emerald Isle went very smooth. Return was also quick an easy. Price was as quoted. Still waiting for National to return a pair of sunglasses left in the vehicle. National shows them as recovered from the car but is very slow in responding to the lost item claim request.
Excellent experience. Located on-site at the airport, extremely fast customer service, wonderful people working at the establishment. Beautiful car, easy in and out. Won’t make the mistake of booking with someone else again. I will only rent from here when I vacation.
Picking up and dropping off our rental car at two different locations was seamless. The Emerald Aisle option that we reserved had a bunch of great options! When we dropped the car off at Palm Springs airport, Gloria was friendly, efficient, and knowledgable. Will definitely rent with them again!
The customer support is atrocious. I left my car and home key fobs attached to the rental car key in the ignition when I returned the car last week on a corporate trip. I submitted a lost and found report and have called the company number and the lost and found number multiple times over the past week, and sent a direct message to the location myself and have recieved absolutely no response from the San Diego location. Every time I call and ask for a way to call the location directly or elevate the request since I haven’t been able to get a response, I get the same run around that they will message the location and get back to me, which never happens. Though always calm and polite when I called, I have been hung up on, forwarded to voicemail after being on hold, and today was told that a previous request sent to the San Diego location by a customer service representative was closed out by the location, but the rep find a reason why. What should have been a very simple return, as the keys were attached to the rental car key and therefore would have been immediately found, has become a nightmare dealing with this complete lack of customer support. There is no possible way the keys weren’t found, unless an employee decided to just take them or throw them away for some reason, but the utter lack of response has been the biggest issue and every day that goes by that they refuse to look into it, I am less likely to see those keys again. Altogether they will cost over $300 to replace. I’m sure it’s a great rental company to use… as long as nothing comes up that you may need customer support, because then you will be completely out of luck. I will definitely be reporting the issue with National to my company as well at this point since we currently use them for the majority of our corporate travel.
Probably the worst selection of vehicles Ive seen for an emerald executive elite. They had a 4 cylinder mustang in the premier section. Only time ive not seen that car in the standard emerald aisle. I was stuck with a standard sedan which they tried to tell me was an upgrade...Their system was also down when I got there. They took my corporate card and license and the guy said he would have to do it the old fashioned way. The next day my personal card got hit with the charge.I called the customer support hotline and was told it wasnt their fault, and it was because my personal card was also on the profile. The lady was quite rude. This probably wouldnt be such a big deal if National/Enterprise support wasnt so terrible.Luckily upon return they had someone there and were able to easily handle it, reverse the charge, and charge my corporate card. Still very disappointing selection, and an issue that would have been a nightmare had I not caught their mistake (Ive had to deal with National mistakes post leaving the location and it takes weeks to resolve).
I am a Emerald Club member traveling between different cities in CA. I came to extend my rental as it will exceed one month. Anthony was on duty today and was very kind and friendly! He helped me to extend my rental in minutes with amazing smile and professional attitude. The best ever rental experience I ever had in the US!
I reserved a full-size car, but when I arrived at the San Diego airport, they only had minivans available. The agent said the rate will be the same. Thats fine, but the minivan got horrible gas mileage, so I had to spend more money on gas. And with gas prices so high in San Diego, I spent $95 to fill it up! I would like to be compensated for some of the additional money I had to spend on gas. Thank you.
Besides the shuttle to offsite car rental garage (all brands are offsite) my experience with National Car Rental at San Diego airport was very nice. Walked right up to the aisle with my class of car. Picked a car, hoped in, drove away. They checked my drivers license upon exiting garage and wished me a good day. When I returned car, pulled in, parked, the attendant asked me if I wanted printed or emailed receipt. My requested emailed receipt was in my inbox before I got to my departure gate. As good a rental experience as I have had.
The process was so easily and quick. After having issues with our original car rental company NU car in San Diego in which they ran out of cars, including the one promised to us, I immediately booked with National and was able to get a car the same day. I will choose National from now on every time.
I’m surprised this location has such a high rating. There are usually a lot of cars to choose from, but nothing decent. I usually rent from here every other week for quick day trips. I’ve overheard the staff saying not to put the nicer cars in the Emerald Elite section; they’re directed to park them in the reserved area. If you have Emerald Elite, expect to get a boring basic Camry, Rav4, or something close to that. I’ve been to other National airport rental centers, and they have Suburbans, BMWs, and minivans available in the Emerald Elite section. The customer service here isn’t the best either. When I return a car, the staff stands around (specifically a staff member named Alex), and I have to ask someone to check-in the car. If Anthony is there, I know I won’t have to wait, and Anthony always provides excellent customer service.
Extremely smooth process renting and picking up from this location. The bus lines to get from the terminal can be quite long, but once at the rental center, I was in and out in no time at all. Every employee I encountered was very laid back and cordial. Very good experience here.
The selection was plentiful and large. With the latest fuel price hike, the vehicle selection tend to be of bigger vehicles (e.g., Tahoe, trucks, minivan, etc.) I ended up renting a Pacifica which was almost new.As an Emerald executive member, check out and check in processes were easy.Next time I am in San Diego, I will rent again from National.
Incompetent at best, dishonest at worst, this is from an EXECUTIVE ELITE EMERALD member.Overcharged for gas per gallon and amount refilled was double what was needed. Returned with 1/2 gallon full, charged for 16 gallons when it was returned at halfway mark, and the car only holds16 gallons, so per national returned at empty. HUH? I also provided receipts showing refilling the car that dont line up with the mileage charges claimed. After a long back and forth they agreed to make it right. If fear travelers are being taken advantage of by the convenience feature.Caveat emptor. No longer a user of National. What a shame to resort to huckster tactics.
The executive area has become more lacking in cars. Nothing worth going specifically to national. Would be better off having other brand just give you a good car. That is unless you like mini vans or really used Toyota Camrys. And if you ask the executive attendant if they have anything better or coming up you can except an extremely rude response... like thats what they have been trained to do
I usually always have a fairly good experience with National. My last experience left a bit to be desired. I reserved a full size suv from San Diego International Airport via Emerald Isle. Upon arriving they only had 3 full size suvs to choose from. All 3 suvs were locked. Had to go all the way back to the national booth in the garage after hauling my family’s luggage down to the end of the isle where the vehicles were located. Emerald Isle is supposed to be just selecting a vehicle in your reserved class and driving off. Loaded all our luggage in the first vehicle and went to check out at which time we noticed the gas tank was below empty. Had to back up and unload everything and pick another vehicle. Very inconvenient. Additionally, all three suvs they had were not in great shape. The one we ended up with had 49700 miles on it and reeked of smoke.
I have been overcharge two time in a row at the San Diego, CA airport location. One time was over $200 overage and this last time $112 for fuel service with a car that I brought back full. Both times National had to correct my charges at the service desk before catching my flights. Two overcharges in a row makes you wonder if they are scamming people.
I am loyal to the National brand. Even so much so, for example, that I have bypassed an airport closest to my destination and selected one nearly 2hrs away just so I could use National. I love the process and am spoiled by it without a doubt. Any other time, Id give 4-5 stars based on each experience at various locations. During my most recent trip I wasnt notified of there being no cars available until I arrived at the counter at 1030pm on a Sunday evening. I had to then take an uber everywhere I went during this work trip and due to the uber shortages in the area, I was displaced and late to nearly every location I had to travel despite trying to book as far in advance as possible. The lack of notice from National on this issue was so disappointing. I could have made other arrangements for that trip had I actually been notified via any means of communication.
One star because I cant do less!!! Worst car rental customer service EVER!!!! Zero communication when we rented and less than zero communication while trying to drop off. Im not from San Diego and had no clue where to take the car to drop it off. Ill never rent of this company again. Theyre lucky I didnt leave the car in the parking garage then drop the keys on the counter and leave.
I reserved a car through another agency which had a very long line.Because I was waiting so long I thought I would check on the National App on my phone to see if a car was available.I was able to reserve my car, get to the executive isle and drive out from the airport while the other people were waiting in line at the other agency.I will not be using any other rental agency again.
I generally go through national or enterprise for my car rental needs but last week my car rental was from Alamo. When we arrived there was no staff at Alamo so we had to use the self check-in kiosk. Anthony from National was very friendly and helped me and another Alamo customer to navigate through the kiosk process and then gave us clear directions to the car pick up location.
The National Car rental staff (front desk and garage reps) at San Diego International Airport were polite and professional. Our Toyota Camry was clean, free of smoke smell and with a full take of gas. No drama and fast service. PRO TIP: ensure to enroll in Nationals Emerald (frequent customer) Club.
I dont like the gas gouging. I filled up, drove less than 30 miles to turn in the car then got gouged for 25 dollars for a gas fee. I have the receipt to prove i just filed up but still got gouged at over 8 dollars a gallon!Customer service said, after the fact, to fill up within 5 miles of the airport. The only gas stations around are over 6 dollars a gallon, not much relief!I guess I need to be more belligerent when I pick up a car and its pushing 3/4 of a tank and they write it down as full.
Had a reservation for a convertible for a sunny weekend in San Diego. No convertible was there when we arrived. There is no upgrade from a convertible. Attendant tried to find one for us, 45 mins later we opted for a luxury car upgrade but thats not the point. We reserved a convertible, they did not holf one for us.It was that Seinfeld episode....
In general the car rental went well as far as the car goes and the price appeared competitive. The concern I had was in picking up the car in San Diego. The National Car Desk checking told us to go to the 2nd floor and pick at car from the Emerald Aisle. When we arrived (with our luggage) to the Emerald Aisle the we no cars. We then had to go (with our luggage) to the Nation Desk on the 2nd floor. We were told to go pick out a car from another Aisle. (I think the Executive Aisle.) We then had to go (with our luggage) to the Executive Aisle where we did find cars. I believe the National Rep on the 2nd floor could call the National Rep on the 1st floor to tell them there were no cars in the Emerald Aisle and to stop sending travelers to that aisle. That would save the travels (my wife and I with our luggage) from walking back and forth on the 2nd floor trying to find a car.
I had initially rented through Hertz but they did not have the car that I wanted nor were they interested in helping a traveler out at all by happened chance I stumbled into The national car rental office and was amazed at the difference in customer service national car rental folks helped me get into a rental car that was exactly what I was looking for and what I was used to driving they were friendly everything was seamless and the return was amazingly quick Ive switched now to national as my go-to rental car company thank you national for a great experience you guys are awesome please give my appreciation to the staff at the San Diego international airport
Poor Customer Service , Especially when it comes to call back.I asked for a call back 3 times and never received a call from local office.and Main corporate is not knowledgable and cannot answer the questions.Only advantage is a free pickup and drop-off.But when you need help they are not there. One of the worst experience especially with SanDiego AirPort location.
Checkout of garage took longer than it should have. We were already running late because of flight delays and then extra 5-10 minutes getting out of garage was annoying. Not sure why its not just matter of scan license/credit card, scan sticker on car, and go. Also little annoyed that i got message while on shuttle to pick up the car that because of our flight delays i missed pickup window and reservation wasnt guaranteed.
We picked up our car at San Diego airport. The car was clean and had a full tank of gas. Since we are an Emerald Club member, we did not have to stop at the counter, and were able to choose any car in the Executive aisle. Dropping off the car was easy too as you just drop and go and can either wait for a receipt or have it emailed to you. We have been using National for at least 10 years and have been very happy with their cars and service.
I have been renting from National for years, mostly for business travel, and rarely ever have any issues at all. This trip was for a family event, so we needed a car seat. The staff at the booth near Emerald Isle were extremely accommodating, showing us the various car seat options, sizes, etc. Each car seat had been sanitized and sealed in plastic; certainly extra important now with Covid. Another great experience with National.
They tried to overcharge me when I dropped the car off. I made a one-way reservation and they tried to put a approximately $200 one way distance charge that was never disclosed at the beginning. As soon as I pushed back on the representative they took it off. Sounds to me like they were trying to take it vantage of me.
Arturo was AMAZING. Our flight got in early morning and we arrived mentally exhausted from the day. Arturo was personable, engaging, informative, and just very very kind. Honestly, interacting with him was highly refeshing. The process for picking up was extremely smooth, the vehicle was spotless, and everything far exceeded my expectations. Upon drop-off Eric was very warm, eager to know our thoughts about our rental, and very friendly. Ive rented vehicles on a monthly basis for approximately the past 3 years. I have extremely high (sometimes to a fault) standards regarding customer service. This was by far the best rental experience that Ive had to date, and Ive had a lot of them. Arturo truly went above and beyond to show sincerity and that we were appreciated - especially that early in the morning and Eric was a great compliment to the initial impression. National will for sure be my first choice going forward. The level of service that I received is truly unmatched. Thanks again!
Rental pick-up was fast and easy. The car was in good condition and well-maintained. My only complaint- two keys were provided and they were connected on one ring. Too big and heavy to carry around comfortably. I prefer a car with a smaller key that fits in my pocket and a push button start,
So-So experience. Customer service rep quoted the base price when I indicated I would be delivering to a different location. I arrived and was charged several hundred dollars more. Spoke to the manager who explained that in the fine print of the contract there was language about one-way expenses which was not properly referenced by the customer service rep when I changed the drop-off location. Manager reduced cost by giving a credit to cover half of the one-way fee, but still left with the feeling of a bait and switch.
I travel 2 or 3 times a year for work and always use National Car rental. As always, this time too, there were so many immaculate cars ready for pickup. I was at San Diego International Airport so naturally there were all-electric cars on the lot as well. I always wanted to try out one and I did.I am always amazed at the nice and courteous staff at National who are willing to go out of their way to help me out. they did not let me down this time also.Continue being amazing, National.
Vacation in Southern California for a week. Flew into San Diego and went straight to the National section of the new rental car terminal. Rented a great Mazda CX-5 at a great rate with minimal fuss. Best thing is that I knew it would go like that ahead of time. I traveled 120 days/year for business pre-Covid and now getting back into it and I dont need to look around. National is consistently excellent and quite simply the best at what they do.
The Rental Car Center at the San Diego Airport is well designed, so its easy to get in, pick up a car, and get out. My only complaint was that I had purchased gas ... but they charged for fuel refilling. They never asked if I had purchased gas ... the gas indicator on the car was full. I realize I had only driven 48 miles, but they still should have asked.
Always able to upgrade us to a luxury car or put us in a great low mileage rental from the Emerald aisle that is always clean fueled up and easiest staff to deal with at the Emerald counter. We never use any other rental company. Rates are great too! Too bad they did away with free rental days after so many days rented etc but still $100s less than other rental companies! First Class!
It was an awesome experience renting from National in San Diego. Everything from pick up to vehicle selection was very easy to do and it made the car renting process super simple. During out drop off we were greeted very nicely by the gentlemen there and we were on our way in less than a minute. Highly recommend!
Everything was great except when we had an issue with the tire on the car. Roadside assistance is provided by a separate company, and coordination between them and National was terrible. One said they would come and exchange the car and the other said i had to go to a National location. I spent hours on phone calls, left messages at National (as directed by the roadside assistance people) that were not returned, was on hold forever, etc. I finally just went to the airport and exchanged for a new car and that was very easy. The new car was great.
I had an great experience renting with National at the San Diego Airport. Each time I have rented from them, the service representatives made me feel welcome, they were kind and very courteous (what we all need coming off a flight) and the the car was very clean. Thank you to the team there, keep up the great work!
Super disappointed with National Car Rental lately (but to be fair, all the car rental companies are letting their customers down lately). I need to rent a car monthly to assist with care for my elderly mother. The prices are ridiculous - its between $350 and $400 to have a car for 2.5 days typically, making these trips difficult. Recently I rented a car for a conference in California. Part way through my 60 mile drive, five different warning lights came on. I spent over on an hour in a series of calls with the emergency department. Apparently its run by a call center and they have no authority or ability to call a customer back with needed information, such as where to go in an emergency. After a stressful 60 minutes in which they kept telling me to go to various locations to get a replacement car and then those locations telling me they had no cars, I was told to go to my hotel and they would arrange an exchange there. That was the last I ever heard from them. No calls, no follow-up and no exchange. On my way I home I stopped in another city where I had reserved a car for the day. I tried three different cars in the Emerald Aisle before I could find one that was clean and didnt smell, and even that one had missed debris on the floor (a pair of sunglasses and lots of candy). Quality and service are gone - the car rental agencies have not navigated the pandemic well and we, their customers are the losers. Id say Id switch companies but I tried that and none of the others are much better; plus, Im almost at the earning level for a free night and I dont want to lose that after suffering through all of this. National, please do better.
It was too easy.I literally went to the service desk twice to ensure I understood correctly. Not that the service attendant didnt explain well enough, I just couldnt believe the number of nice cars and suvs available for me to choose from. Its been a while since I last rented a car but National made it super easy!
I decided to rent a car from that day minutes before the cab I was in, dropped me off there. To add to that, my plans changed to take me to Mexico!! I have rented from national many times and I like the Emerald club options of picking a car and driving away. That alone keeps me coming back. But today I went to the desk and when they pulled up my details and as soon as he knew I was going to Tijuana, Mexico he immediately offered Mexican insurance. I quickly accepted! Just the way he did that knowing that I dont take the insurance normally was very impressive. I appreciated the professionalism. It continued as he guided me to the cars that were located on another floor. Top notch service once again National. I will be back....
Unfortunately National mishandled my reservation and wouldnt feel comfortable renting from this location as it seems that the employees arent well versed in the policies of National. Id caution people from renting here only because you can get stuck with charges you werent expecting.
Had a 17 day rental for vacation recently and all was great. Car was fairly new and well maintained. Service person in San Diego was excellent as we were evaluating cars. Love being able to pick the car in the aisle. Pricing is very fair/competitive and the return service agent was helpful and friendly as well. thank you.
This is a great rental center. Very clean and easy to get around. A lot of people get confused here for some reason. You have to go to your rental agency through the glass doors first and check in. Then you proceed to your rental by going where the escalators are. Most of the time if you go right to where the cars are they send you back to the front. The buses from the airport to the center are plenty and move you quickly and easily. So you nice you get if you are right in front of the check out centers for all the agencies. One of the best rental centers for any airport.
Recently had a great experience with National at the San Diego Airport. Booking online was easy and simple. Picking up the rental at the lot was easy and smooth as well. Drop off was convenient and took about 2 minutes with the attendant at the return. Will be using National again for my next trip.
I always book with National for the most part especially when Im on a tight schedule between my flight and needing to be somewhere. Being able to just hop in a car in the Executive area quickly is my favorite part. It was an absolute breeze and made my trip super easy. I was able to get through the exit turnstile very quickly as well and be on my way. The car was brand new and ready to go. When returning the car it took only a few seconds and I was on my way to the terminal hassle-free. Such a wonderful experience end to end! Thank You!
I booked a PREMIUM car online. It was the only reason I was willing to pay $135/day plus taxes, etc. When I got there, the sales person was rude to me when I tried to drive off in a Premium Car. She insisted I had signed up for a Sporty Car and didnt bother to try to fix the situation.I didnt have time to argue with her or to wait for a manager, etc. She could have offered me a premium car for a bit more or something.I will never rent from National again. This was unacceptable and a complete scam.UPDATE: They contacted me to make it right. But all the mindless agent from a third-world country did was re-explain to me how the car I signed up for was the one I was given. Not from my perspective. I believed from the description I was getting something other than what I got. I wont be back. The end.
National always has a nice assortment of clean, low mileage vehicles available at very reasonable rental prices. We use the Emerald Aisle. Walk in, pick out a vehicle and drive out. Easy and fast. Be sure to check your vehicle thoroughly when returning. I left a very expensive pair of prescription glasses in a storage compartment, under the infotainment system during my last rental. My name, phone number and address were on the case. Notified National the next morning. Glasses were never returned. Someone with a similar prescription to mine must be enjoying them now.
Great experience overall. Recommend using the rewards program, it is a great value overall if you rent a lot through the year. Very efficient, walked right up to a car, put my stuff in the trunk, did a drive thru check out. The staff was very friendly. Check in process was just as easy, drive up, scanned the window, walked out. Overall check in and out was probably less than 5 minutes total. Highly recommend and will definitely return.
We rented a sporty 2 door (after convertibles werent available) for our weekend trip in San Diego. The rental pick up was pretty smooth but the car we ended up taking had rims which werent properly cleaned and full of brake dust. Not a great look for an upgraded rental and definitely not how we would drive our car around. The check in/check out was smooth. We did leave a sweater in the car which I returned for after getting through airport security. The rep had to drive to another location to look through the lost and found box. I dont get why it wasnt readily available for quick retrieval, especially in an airport! (we did get our sweater!)
San Diego airport location is clean, efficient and well run. Great car for our needs, love the National service! BIG problem is the Rental facility and the bus service back to the terminals. There are *way* too many people waiting for the bus ride, and clearly not enough buses or frequency in the bus schedule. Definitely adds to the already stressful check-in process at SAN!
I had a great experience here. The agent who helped me was super nice and welcomed me to San Diego. Even though it was past midnight, he had high energy and great customer service. He apologized for my wait and did his best to make sure I was satisfied. When I came back the next day to exchange for the intermediate type I had actually rented, the agent worked with me and was really nice. Everyone here had great customer service so I will definitely be renting with National the next time Im in San Diego.
Customer services is so horrible here, they don’t try to help you, they try to say no, oh and if your local expect $400 deposit. God forbid you’re charging something else on your credit card because they only take credit! Even if you have money in other places, oh and they only take one card? The manager threatening us to remove us for asking questions and trying to figure something out. Overall wish I never had to rent from National again, because this was such a bad experience and all of the 3 people working didn’t want to help they wanted to say no and have us go home. And when we went to the check out stand, the woman from the counter had already called the other person to “warn” them about us coming so that she would just say no! It’s great! Well now I’m going home to call and extend my rental anyway? Was it worth ruining my morning National? I sure as heck hope so. Find somewhere you like better everyone because this is not it! Another reason the people in San Diego annoy me.
It was a great and smooth experience! I will use National for my next car rental. Arrived at the San Diego airport car rental National office, directed me to 2nd floor, and made me choose any car from the executive aisle - SUVs. I chose a Jeep Compass and it was clean, brand new, fuel tank filled - safe and great car to drive my 1 year old baby in high speed freeway California! Thank you!
Ive never had an issue in the 10+ years Ive used National until recently. I rented a car to be picked up at San Diego airport. I was told the pick up point was in the airport. When I landed I could not find the reservation desk. So I thought it must be off site. I went outside to look for a National shuttle. After waiting for a half hour I called National and was told it was inside the airport. I explained it was not. The representative spoke very broken English, kept putting me on hold, and kept insisting it was inside the airport. I finally hung up frustrated. I then asked another airport employee outside who pointed to a sign left of the terminal) that said rental car shuttle and learned then that all rental car locations were in one building outside of the airport! The shuttle was approximately a 10 min ride to a large building where all the rental companies were located. I got off the shuttle went inside the to the National desk and was then told I had to go all the way outside to the end of the building and upstairs to pick up my rental.I have mobility issues and use a wheelchair in airports. I was not prepared for the extensive walking that day to find the exact location. Before I returned I tried calling the San Diego location to let them know that I needed a wheelchair when I returned the car. I called twice over 3 days, no one answered, I left 2 voice mails, no one called back. The day before I was to return I called again and someone answered and told me I would need to let the person working when I arrived I would need a wheelchair. When I arrived there was a long line of cars being returned and it was quite a distance over to the National kiosk and I didnt see anyone in the kiosk. An airport employee was instructing everyone to pull forward, park, and leave keys. I did, had to walk back down to the shuttle. Another airport employee saw the physical distress I was in, helped me to a shuttle and ordered a wheelchair at the airport. To top everything off, on Monday, September 13th, 2 days after returning the car, I received an email saying the car had not been returned! I called, a report was taken and I was told to call back the next day. I called the next day, again spoke to someone with very broken English and could not understand what she was saying. I finally asked, do you have the car and she said yes. The next day I received the receipt although the charge has still not shown up on my credit card.I am very disappointed in the customer service, the lack of knowledge concerning the airport pick up location, and then the shock of being told the car had not been returned when it had.
National is usually our preferred rental car company. Our last rental in San Diego was a disaster getting out of the airport. The cars were all taken so we had to take a different car than expected and the checkout at the gate took over 45 minutes! There was 1 gate open and the car at the exit when we pulled up took over 20 minutes. If something is that messed up National should get more exit staff immediately or make the person pull aside to figure out the problem.
As usual, car rental with National was perfect! Our choice of cars were ready at San Diego Airport and the process was quick and easy (much appreciated after our flight from Boston).I misplaced my prescription glasses as we were returning the car a week later. A wonderful staff person (wish I got his name) went to the car wash area and found my glasses on the back seat and brought them to me. Many thanks, National!!
I’ve rented with National for many years and it always goes smoothly. I like them and will continue to rent with them. This time had an unusual glitch. I needed to top up the gas before returning. I had rented a Toyota and I’m not familiar with it. I could not figure how to open the gas tank. As I poked around helplessly a stranger discovered the release under the dashboard.National should provide info for strange vehicle behaviors like this.
National is always incredible. They were low on cars (just like everyone else) but they got everyone in line in a car. They did it quickly and all employees had great attitudes. They made no issue about an upgrade car as its all they had. Never ever disappointed with National!
No problem picking up the rental car through the Executive (Emerald club) express check-out on July 20 at San Diego International airport ; however I waited over 25 minutes in line in my rental car for the one check-out person. The woman was having a problem with one car and everyone got backed up. I asked her why she did not call for backup and she said she was not allowed . Really unacceptable
I rented a car from National car rental when I was at San Diego for my sons graduation on June 12th. National car rental charged me $6.12 extra for the gas refilling charge at $ 6.8 per gallon. But I had just refilled the tank to full at the nearest gas station right before I return the car.I felt like this was not right, so I emailed the customer care team and they addressed my concern right away. National car rental staff was professional and very helpful. I will definitely used them again next time!!
Ive been renting with national for some time now. While the car ands service was good Im very disappointed in how greedy they have become. The vehicle I rented had connect on it. Allegedly the vehicle had 16.7 gal when I left and even after I over topped off I returned it with 16.3. even though the fuel capacity according to the factory specs is 16 gals they wanted to charge me for .4 of a gal at almost triple the cost. I rent frequently and will be looking elsewhere.
Being a member of the Emerald Club is awesome ... you bypass all lines, simply grab your vehicle from the lot, and drive out (with a brief pause to do some paperwork as you exit the lot). The selection of vehicles wasnt great during our latest rental in San Diego ... a couple Rav4s, Rouges and Camrys – we chose a Rouge and it was a nice little SUV. Nothing overly exciting but it got us from San Diego to Yosemite National Park and back in comfort, solid gas mileage.
I usually rent through Avis and this was my first experience with National, and the customer service is night and day between them. All three of the employees that I interacted were extremely professional and with went above and beyond to make my experience a memorable one. Keep up the great work!
I had a 15 passenger van reserved and went in to pick it up. Attendant at counter led me to vehicles and asked a few questions. I informed him I only needed room for 8 but that most vehicles only sat 7 and that I didnt want to pay for a premium SUV because it was only for the day. He informed me he may have a 12 passenger van or something a little smaller to give me so I said okay that works. He ended up finding me a suburban that sat 8 and had me go through a different kiosk to get it. They charged me $30 for changing vehicles which I thought was odd. When I went back to the original guy he asked if they charged me anything and I said yeah it was like $30 more but whatever. He acted surprised but with me needing to be somewhere I didnt press the issue. In hindsight, he was trying to help me out and find something that worked better which I appreciated but he obviously wasnt expecting me to have to pay more for it since I didnt request to change vehicles necessarily. Wasnt the best experience but it all worked out and I got what I needed.
Always a pleasure doing business with National. The only car rental company I use. No lines, no waiting. Book on user friendly app, pick your car and go. Ive spent too much time in lines in the past with discount car rental companies. The benefits of loyalty are extremely generous with National. Get the app and go!
I appreciate Nationals business model. I was well treated. The service agent was very helpful and courteous. I needed to alter my reservation during this trip. the agent on the phone provided me options and the switch was seem less. Unfortunately the best option would have cost me $250 for an additional day of rental. That is WAY too much.
I used my business account to make the reservation and specifically asked that my personal credit card be billed and gave them my credit card. They billed my employer, what a hassle. Also, mid-way through the rental I wanted to add a driver. There is no way to do that without returning to a National office. Really? In a high technology world you cant take a photo of a drivers license? Get with the times. Those two hassles aside, it was a decent car that performed well.
I am a frequent user with National Car Rental and not once have I had a bad experience. When available I can upgrade without any questions. Not that the perks made my experience so good because the cars are always clean and well maintenance. Every time I travel and a Rental is required I contact National and recommend anytime someone ask that they use National!
Ive rented with national car rental a long time. No matter how much time between rentals. They always make me feel better than when I walk in. They treat me like I would treat myself. Going above and beyond my expectations. When they dont have a compact and still accommodate me at that price. When I ask for something nice and they give me the ultimate luxury vehicle. That happened at the perfect time. My first out of town trip with my wife. Thank you. National rental car.
As I am a an Emerald Club member, I was able to walk directly to the vehicle and drive out without any waiting. I was able to chose the vehicle of my choice. The vehicle could have been cleaned better as there was some sticky spill in the cup-holder from previous use.The rear view camera was acting up and wouldnt work all the time, especially during nightsThe customer service was excellent, the employees greeted me, were pleasant, asked me what I was looking for and if I was happy.I was also able to redeem a free day coupon by calling National help line. The customer service rep was knowledgeable, helpful and pleasant.
Needed a car for 2 weeks and at first, couldnt find a car I liked because several cars smelled like cigarettes. After finding one, everything was good but then I had a tire that was very low on air and when I took it to a tire shop, they said it needed to be repaired. I then called National and they told me I could get it fixed myself and get reimbursed, but I did not have time, so I took it back to the airport and they exchanged it for me. The process was pretty fast and hassle free and I got a better car.My trip was then extended another week and everything went great, except i was getting emails that my rental was past due, which I later found out was some glitch in the system. Overall, it was a great experience with just a couple of minor issues. I prefer National over any other rental place because I travel a lot and this was the only time Ive had any issues.
We had a great experience @ National San Diego Airport. We had a like new 2020 Chrysler Voyager that was awesome but shortly after renting the vehicle we experienced mechanical issues with the motorized rear lift gate. We returned the vehicle to the airport and the attendant quickly swapped out our faulty van for an exact replica, only newer. We also had a quick issue free return experience capping off a great week in San Diego.
Everything process wise went fine. 3* because : We rented a car for 2 days, ended up deciding we wanted to extend a day... found our total cost was going to be more than double, because our 2 day rate was now a 3 day rate. Didnt make sense to pay $150 to keep our car for one extra day, so we returned the car and got a car from a different company for 1 day at ~$90. Why would I extend the same car when I can get a new car for cheaper? Doesnt make sense to me. Otherwise everything went fine.
I reserved a convertible for a bachelorette I was hosting as a surprise for the bride. When we went through checkout, the guy called the garage and nothing was mentioned as they closed out my payment for the convertible. However, when we got to the garage, the lady then admitted she gave our car to the guy before us bc the reservation was for 3:30 and we got there at 4 pm. However, I had no idea the location was off site and I would have expected some grace period coming from an airport considering we reserved this well in advance. To say it was disappointing was an understatement. They offered to call me when a convertible came in, yet they never called (we gave them two numbers). Was really disappointed with the customer service and care for my reservation. Three stars bc as a member it was still easy to get in and out, which I do appreciate.
Easiest pick up of any rental company because Im an executive emerald member you just show your confirmation and pick your car. We got a 2020 nissan which turned out to be a really nice car. No issues returning early in the morning to the airport. Would definitely rent again!
Car rental experience was great. Wide selection of vehicles available for Emerald Club. We selected a very well equipped Ford Edge with leather, navigation, heated and cooled seats to name a few.Only complaint is there are zero gas stations conveniently located near the rental car return. Not a knock against National, but they should inform you of that as a courtesy so you’re not stuck with $6.50 a gallon.
The car was 5 stars, the pick up at San Diego airport was 5 stars until the person who did the paperwork upon exiting the lot quoted , a prepay gas charge of $ 17.00 which I verified before accepting it. Upon returning the car to the same location the charge was actually $ 70.00. Which I would not have accepted. I called customer service & received a refund of the difference quickly, professionally & hassle free. Customer Service rating 5 stars. Person at the airport , not so good.
This experience was not as good as past experiences simply because of employee attitude. Upon pick up, the attendant told us that the pick up truck we reserved was not available and there was nothing similar. That employee kept walking away from us when we had questions about the other vehicles that we were considering. I felt that her customer service was horrible. She went to make a phone call and it sounded more like a personal call than a business call and she ignored us. We were about to leave with a small vehicle when another employee doing the final check out by exit asked if we wanted the pick up truck we originally reserved as they had one available. So we ended up with the correct vehicle. So why did the first employee state there were none available? It seemed like she did not want to do her job. Thank goodness for the employee named Van for accommodating us. She saved the day.
National consistently delivers a fantastic user experience each time I need to rent a car when traveling. Being able to walk out to the Emerald Aisle and pick a vehicle that meets the need for each trip so much quicker and more convenient than going back-and-forth with a counter agent to pick a car, I never want to go back. Combined with the quick drop-off-and-go process when I bring the car back makes the National experience that much better when trying to get home after a long business day on the road.
Everything was great. I rented my car at the San Diego Airport. My only disappointment was that I had to go to the counter to get a car, rather than just choosing one from the lot. Being able to choose a car from the lot is what I like most about National. With that said, the service was excellent, the car was as it should be, clean etc., the price was reasonable. All good and I will continue to choose National first when I need a car.
I had a horrible experience with my recent rental through National in San Diego. I picked up a vehicle with a nail in the tire. As I was leaving my first client visit, I noticed the sound of air leaving my tire. While looking, I noticed a huge nail in the tire, which needed to be plugged. I drove to the nearest Discount Tire and was told there would be a 2+ hour wait. I called National and Customer Service told me they had an appointment for me at Pep Boys 5 miles away- mind you, air was still leaving my tire and it was becoming hazordous to drive. I arrived at Pep Boys and was told there was no appointment and the wait was 3+ hours. I called National back and was informed no case was made during my original call. Customer Service was unable to get me an appointment anywhere nor find me a replacement vehicle. After an hour on the phone with them, they were also unable to deliver a vehicle to me. I went back into Pep Boys and they were able to get me an appointment at their sister store another 5 miles down the road. I waited another hour and finally, the tire was plugged. My entire day was wasted. I was visiting San Diego from Atlanta for client meetings- all of which were missed. I am unsure what the perk is to be an Emerald Member through National.

2022-06-27National Car Rental in San Diego was a great rental experience. We were in San Diego some time ago and used another rental company and this time we had a much better experience. I love the big car rental center and the service at National Car Rental was just marvelous. The representatives were all professional and made our experience enjoyable and easy. The pick up and drop off was very manageable and easy. The shuttle drivers were very nice and just entertaining.

2022-03-28Had a great experience! Needed to rent a car for a day, and was able to make a last minute car rental here. The process was extremely smooth from beginning to end. Everyone was very friendly and understanding and the overall process was so easy. Would highly recommend this place - they actually have the cars you reserve available. They also have hybrid cars, which is also extremely valuable considering the rising price of gas in California!

2022-08-17From the person on the phone at San Diego when I had a few questions prior to my arrival, to the gentleman who was so kind and helpful when we arrived, it was so unexpectedly wonderful! The vehicle was fantastic. So new and well equipped and the return process could not have been easier. The wonderful man came right up to the vehicle and asked how was. your rental? with a smile and this was at 4:30am! He was so friendly and efficient. I could not say more about how great National Car Rental at San Diego Airport was! I will now move to National for all of my rentals especially at San Diego. Thank you!

2022-02-22I really enjoy my corporate Emerald Club membership. I enjoy picking a car that matches what Im going to be doing at a location. I appreciate how fast Im able to leave the airport - find the car, hop in and go. Every step is as fast as advertised. Lastly, I get great rates and for this reason, I come here and only here. I actually look forward to renting. Once in a while there will be an Emerald Isle that only has somewhat generic cars, but not the end of the world. Theres almost always an interesting / fun option. For my needs, this is a great fit.

2022-02-14Rented a car from the National Team as San Diego Intl. Airport and was extremely impressed, as always! The vehicle was ready-to-go, and spotlessly clean, with the keys inside. I just loaded my luggage, made a quick stop at the checkout gate, and was on my way in less than five minutes. Returning the vehicle was a similar process, and just as fast and my receipt for the rental was in the app and a copy was sent to my email before I had even left the lot. Cant say enough good things about the National Team! If you dont rent from them, you are missing out!

2022-06-13Best rental car experience that we have ever had. We had a couple of minor challenges at pickup - both we immediately and easily handled. We could pick from dozens of cars - which was both convenient and fun.Drop-off couldnt have been faster or smoother.Nathan at pickup was tops, as was Miguel at drop-off.Thanks to the whole National team at SAN!

2022-06-06It’s a bit of a wait to board the bus to the off-site rental car location but once there the process couldn’t have been easier. I picked a car, loaded up and headed out through the check out lane. The attendant was courteous and helpful. The return experience was equally pleasant, dropping the car off at the same remote location. Travelers should allow an extra 20-30 minutes for any rental car at the San Diego location but the bus ride drops you off at the door.

2022-08-03I’ve been an Emerald Club Member at National for a couple years. The San Diego location seemed to be low on the number of cars to choose from but it may also have been simply the time of day I arrived. All in all the car was in good condition, no surprises and the check out / in process went smooth as it should.

2022-04-15Car choices available were suitable. East in/out and staff were courteous. It would help them and customers to have signage as to where the cars for Emerald members to select are parked so we can just go there instead of waiting for staff to finish helping other customers. That would also free up staff to help the customers faster.

2022-03-02Very seamless experience! Went straight to the stalls to pick out a vehicle. Great selection from cars to SUVs and even trucks! I chose a 2021 Nissan SUV which was practically brand new and very clean. Drop off at the SD airport was also a breeze. Will definitely rent again!
