Truly beautiful forest! We traveled through during the winter and the snow covered forests, spread amongst the fantastic landscape is breathtaking. It is difficult to believe its in California. Reminds me of Wyoming and Montana wide open country. This is an absolute must see when youre in the area.
I guess the place was fine... but the large group that sent one person up to reserve a contiguous group of individual campsites showed up at 11:30 pm and then spent two hours fumbling in the dark (about a dozen screaming children) colored the experience a bit... negatively. The deer were fearless and amusing.
Known as The Land of Many Uses it has Amazing Views from every angle, the land of my ancestors. The territory has wild animals to view and hiking trails, worth a visit when ever your near. One of the last few natural forest around, I once seen a bob cat, just fly past in front of me across the highway and up the northern slope, what a great sight.
I have bought 3.13 acres in the mountains. Huge wildlife population deer, antelope, bears, water fowl and much more. Somewhat remote but not too far from people. A hermits paradise or hunters paradise. Great amounts of water springs, streams and rivers and lakes. Some people live here all year round. I cant live here and would like to but maybe I should sell my land that I never use.
The Modoc National Forest is a beautiful and diverse destination to visit. From sagebrush-steppe to high Alpine lakes this Forest has it all! The Warner Mountains are gorgeous and have many hiking trails and campgrounds. Visit the South Warner Wilderness and escape into a quiet wonderland with awesome views.
The weather was very cool, down right COLD when the wind came blowing over the lake, still enjoyed it, a lot of speed type boats, paddle boats, canoes, small fishing boats, the grounds and facilities were very clean, my husband fished for 3 hours, not one nibble (Im his cheering squad, lol),
My last 6 years have been just wonderful.Lived on homestead rd, way up there.Lots of snow.County snow removal is usually on time.Moved down to lower areas less snowAnd property level.Building wild Horse Santuary.California Pines has a very nice staffThursday Tru Saturday nite.Buffet on Sunday 10am to2pm.New pool, wonderful play ground.andNow the ducks are starting to comeBack.
Its a great place to enjoy the outdoors. From camping and hiking to fishing and hunting. The scenic mountains and the crisp clean air make the Modoc National Forest a great place to get away. With abundant wildlife and lots of open space. There are many lakes, rivers, and streams for fishing, boating, or swimming. Many areas offer trails for hiking or you can go and find your own trails in most areas. Some of the historic attractions are Captain Jacks Stronghold where the Modoc Indians held off the U.S. Calvery. There are also lava tubes for one to explore as well as medicine lake and glass mountain. Also the bridge in Lookout where the last hanging in California took place when the Hall family 6 in all the youngest only 16 were hanged for alleged cattle and horse rustling by vigilantes.
I live where I can see the Warner mountain range. They have many linked maintained hiking trails. There are streams, lakes, and Meadows . In most areas there is a lot of firewood around for campfires. The night sky is free of city glare. The air is normally clear enough to see mountain peaks 80 miles away. You can enjoy this area all four seasons. Alturas does have some stores but if you need special gear you need to bring it, and dont count on buying it locally. From the mountain peaks you can see into Neveda and Oregon. It is quiet and normally not crowded. This is a good area for horse riding.
The neglect to maintain their roads after logging has exited area the trails that we look for were non-existent except for wildlife traffic I was very disappointed in fee reservoir campground in lake county the BLM roads were just as bad very very disappointed in a week-long vacation seems like all theyre doing is fighting fires and leaving the rest of their duties neglected also when we went in to the forest service BLM and office we got no attention it seems they were on coffee break

2022-06-17If you like the wide open spaces, this entire area is for you. Sweeping vistas and high desert grandeur are just a couple benefits of extreme north-eastern California. Wildlife is both abundant and varied: Great Horned Owls, Pronghorn Antelope, Cougars, and more. Though you are less likely to actually see a cougar, rest assured that they see you! The terrain encompasses dense forested mountains and high sage desert, wild creeks and reservoirs, and more. Views of the two southernmost of the majestic cascades - Mount Shasta and Mount Lassen - and the leading edge of the Sierras are peppered throughout. This is a fabulous place to visit, and a beautiful drive if you are simply passing through.

2021-06-24Not many people can say they get to live in the Modoc National Forest..but I do! We absolutely love it up here! Its peaceful, its quiet, its beautiful! And I love when we get these thunder and lightening storms.. its so relaxing to sit and watch the rain and hear the thunder! This really is the last frontier of what used to be the wild west!

2018-09-16Modoc National Forest is home to Lava Beds National Monument. We entered via the North Entrance. The 14 mile drive to the monument is absolutely beautiful with tall pines and an occasional cinder cone along the way. RVs will have no problems. There is a small visitors center with museum that you must stop at before visiting the caves (lava tubes, there are many). The tubes vary from easy and paved to difficult. Enjoy a short visit at the center and Mushpot cave (easy) or an extended stay at the campground and go carving to your hearts content. We did Mushpot, drove the cave loop then entered Valentine on our way out of the park. Very nice visit.

2018-11-11Very rugged terrain and sparsely populated. Several lots of various sizes and prices. The entire area is economically depressed and the environment looks it in many areas. Still, a decent place to start a family if your of the SURVIVALIST BREED!!
