Wonderful store with extremely helpful staff. Books not normally found anywhere else can be found here. If they dont have a book, they are willing to look it up and order it for you. Many art books also have a demo book so you can look at it before buying. They also have pens, notebooks, calligraphy supplies and stickers and knickknacks.
This is such a fun place to go to!If you’re in Little Tokyo definitely walk to this shop and just look around. It is pricey, but they have a loooot! (A Loooot) of manga (even in Japanese!) and different anime accessories, basically whatever you can imagine is there! They also have literature. I was surprised myself to find authors as Kobo Abe and Akutagawa Ryunosuke.Gorgeous books with illustrations from Hayao Miyazaki and Makoto Shinkai movies. They also have plenty accessories of Sanrio world.Mugs, posters, pillowcases, toys, keychains, bags, wallets etc., etc., etc.I bought a poster pack of anime Free! which was a fun to open, because you never know which ones you’ll find inside. $8.99I also purchased Akutagawa Ryunosuke ‘Rashomon and 17 other stories’ $17.It’s a paradise for all anime lovers!
I love this place. It has tons of manga and books in Japanese and English. Its almost impossible to find a bookstore with any books in Japanese. I lost one of my death note comics so I came here to see if they had them. They didnt have any in store but they were able to order one for me with no shipping cost to the store for me to pick up later. Very helpful staff.
Amazing bookstore in Little Tokyo! They sell all kinds of books here. And toys and other accessories worth checking out. What I love the most about this store is that it looks like an actual bookstore from Japan, literally. Its also very warm inside because they have no AC so bring a mini paper fan on warm days. I will definitely be coming back here again!
I wasnt aware of this bookstore franchise but I am so happy to have found it. Its a large store with a great variety of books available in English and Japanese. I was happy to have found some books that I havent been able to in other stores or online which makes my soul sing.Theres also a ton of gifts and stationary/office & art supplies as well. The plusses are adorable and I love the pins. The staff was quick, professional, and kind. All in all, one of my favorite new shops that Im happy to know exists.
Great selection of Japanese books from novels to manga. plenty of art books from photography, anime and manga too. there are also English books there, including some rather interesting ones. and you can find a lot of small knickknacks there if youre into those things. they also accept orders for books from Japan, so if you have something specific in mind, definitely ask the staff about it.
I liked the store but unfortunately there isnt much manga in English. Granted it is a Asian store and it will have books in their language but, I do wish there was more of a selection. Also its very crowded there. Very confined space . You gotta rub bodies basically. Lol
An excellent bookstore that my partner and I always enjoy visiting every time were in LA. Even if theres a location near your home like San Jose, this may be different and is worth strolling by. Theres a wide selection of books, manga, and magazines in Japanese and English. Dont expect discounted prices, but youll probably find something worth buying.
If you love Anime or anything related to Japan this bookstore is for you. Not only does it carry recently translated manga/light novels, it also has Imported equivalent in their native language. If Anime isnt your thing there is also literature, art, ceramics and art supplies.
I am so grateful to have this shop so close by. Not only do they have a great selection of manga, but they also have many interesting items and books I cant find in other places. The staff is always nice and polite as well. I bought a book on mushrooms here for my sisters birthday and she loved it! Thank you kinokuniya.
Absolutely love this store. This has an excellent selection of books and magazines in Japanese, language books and tools, kids books, and other English books as well. They also have a lot of great stationary and calligraphy supplies from Japan that are so much better than what youd find in a typical office or Target store. Theyve also got some fun quirky finds that always make a trip inside a delight. Their staff is always incredibly helpful and friendly and never bat an eyelash if you practice your Japanese conversation. This is such a wonderful place and well worth the visit!
This is a great bookstore complete with a fine assortment of writing tools. Theres a large assortment of literature/periodicals, as well as Japanese Manga. Theres also plenty of other gifts available for many different occasions. The staff is great and can help you with your search for pens, pencils, Japanese art supplies, books, and more... Definitely worth a stop in if youre near Weller Court.
This store is filled with some of the friendliest people Ive had the pleasure of meeting. Primarily a Japanese Book store, they also have all kinds of stationary and quality little trinkets. My finance and I come here often, and we love it! Lets keep retail stores like this one; Alive!
This bookstore has been around since I was a child. I remember my family coming here every so often and browsing. Its a little pricey since all of these books are direct imports from Japan. A typical comic costs around 6.99 plus tax. They range around 400 yen and up in Japan. The converted price is reasonable considering having to import it here. Lots of selection! Now I bring my own kids and we come and buy books to read!! :)
Great selection of books, manga, gift items and more. Been coming here for over a decade and try to stop in whenever I’m in the neighborhood. A bit on the pricier side, but you know the money is supporting a local business that’s been a staple in DTLA’s Little Tokyo community for decades, so it’s worth it.
I love local bookstores. I love them even more when they are open until 10pm!!! I stopped in here after dinner with a friend and completely fell in love with several books. It is smallish but there is a great selection. I was blown away but the diversity of books there. Bonus....everything was very reasonably priced!
Super cute bookshop. I stumbled upon it while wandering the mission. I thought they had really good coverage of book genres, non-fiction categories, and authors in general. The prices were a tad too high for me so I didnt purchase anything. But I spent a while looking around and was impressed by the collection of books available for purchase.
Great location, very attentive to cleanliness. They require sensitization of hands prior to entry and provide sanitizer for you. The selection of imported books is not to be beat. From ghibli storyboard books to reference photography books this kinokuniya has it all. Beware though as many books are sealed and not to be opened until purchase. If youre a book browse before you buy type then this may not be for you. The prices arent terribly great but they are average bookstore prices. That being saod their stationary section is also very impressive and their staff is very knowledgable .
Great Japanese bookstore chain. This location is more crowded/packed with shelves than in use to so it was hard to move around when there are a lot of people compared to other locations Ive been to. Still have a pretty good variety of books, comics, magazines, and other stuff though.
Really great selection of stationary, cute gifts, English and Japanese manga, books and magazines. Kinokuniya is on the second floor of the shopping center and is huge. The only thing I can say is nobody welcomed us into the store, BUT there was plenty of staff so if we needed help there was always someone to ask.Prices are a little higher but you’re paying for having japanese goods imported, although I did find a good deal on a couple notebooks. Support your local bookstores!
If you are into Japanese stationary and art supplies, ink pens, manga or art books and magazines from Japan, this place is a must-see. They have a great selection of Japanese style art supplies, particularly ink pens and notepads. The only bad thing about this store is the art books are all shrink wrapped. There are signs that say the staff can unwrap books for you to preview, but... That feels weird.
If you come here...leave your wallet in the car. Goodness, its amazing here. Staff kinda leaves you alone, which is nice, but can seem a bit standoffish, but I think theyre just busy. :) This place has SO much. Crafting stuff, manga of differing languages, art books galore, geeks knick knacks! I have never done this, but I had to leave the store because there was so much good stuff that was JUST the kind of stuff I like. If you are a nerd/geek, crafter, artist, or similar, you take this place in 2 batches. Go get some boba and come back. :) So much fun!
Ive been here multiple times, and each time I buy something. This place is great as it has a cornucopia of books and magazines of all kinds, with stationery and other goods. In addition, as it is in Little Tokyo, there are lots of books about Japanese culture and language, and if looking for books written in Japanese, this would be the place to find them. Highly recommend.
So many items are available here. You can find some neat looking office or school supplies and some novelty items as well. I happened to find wanted posters from the animated series One Piece here. But if youre looking for books from manga to history down to even picture books, then this is a place to checkout. I found that they even had a couple of picture books with naked heavy set guys in the adult section. Not my cup of tea but for those who do like that kind of stuff it is there. So for those of you who are visiting Little Tokyo, this is a place I recommend checking out. There is something for everyone here.
This store is just really awesome, if youre into Asian literature at all you have to visit here, they have everything from manga to literature, history, martial arts. They also have different sections for different languages. I found some books from Asian authors I have been looking for for a while. Ill definitely be coming back.
This is probably hands down, the greatest bookstore ever!!!! They have a little bit of everything. Pens, magazines, toys, art supplies, posters, doohickeys. The employees are super friendly and very helpful. Came in looking for this magazine and they didn’t have it in stock. They offered to order it online from Japan and get it in store at no extra cost!!!!That was freaking awesome because I tried ordering the magazine online and was getting charged twice what I paid for at this store.
We love this bookstore. Now that my daughter is into manga I felt that it was fitting to take us here. E was in heaven and quickly the negotiations began. I loved that they had a large coloring book section and I was able to find one on Tokyo Street Style. E left with several mangas and a poster. Her Birthday is coming so I know we will be back.
One of the few surviving Kinokuniya Bookstores our area. I love coming here, but they do not allow beverages inside the store. I always find myself with a drink when I stroll by the plaza, so keep that in mind when you visit. Kinokuniya has really great calendars toward December and into January. Everything sold in the stationery section seems curated to sell the most interesting products related to reading, writing, or drawing. Check this bookstore out after visiting Marukai Market down below.
Imagine with me now, a Barnes&Noble bookstore. Take out all the American books, novels, and everything else. Replace it with Japanese books, magazines, graphic novels, stationary supplies, and more. There! Now you have a Kinokuniya!Prices are a bit steep, but most of the goods that they carry are imports or difficult to find. Its always an adventure wandering around in here!
I did not have a great first impression because on their website it mostly says that most manga is available when in reality it’s not and that’s the whole reason I went so early to the store. Also nobody can tell you to go in so you just stand outside.I was unsatisfied.
Awesome selection of books whether it be manga, art books, short novels, history, philosophy, you name it. It had books in English and untranslated versions in the original Japanese. Theres also a cute kid section to get books for kids barely learning how to read [English/ Japanese]. Plushies and some anime merch like totoro is available as well.
Great neighborhood bookstore to browse through on a lazy weekend. They have a good selection of new and used books but you have to keep a lookout to get really good deal. I still like to stop by every now and then and if I get a great book for a dollar while I am at it, that is double the fun!
Great Selection of Manga, in English and Japanese. Dont confuse this for a Manga Book Store however - it is an Authentic Japanese Bookstore with a diverse range of Japanese and Asian Literature. You can find board games, Art Supplies and Stationery, (Korean) Fashion Magazines, Historical Drama novels, and even textbooks. To appreciate the fullest of the Native Language text, there is a section at the back of the store dedicated to Japanese Language Studies, so dont wait for the Dub you Weeaboo Degenerates, learn the Language. There are even Cultural Childrens books, so its safe for kids here also.
Cool bookstore in Little Tokyo. They have a wide selection of Japanese books, movies and cool little nick nacks. Really cool to browse their collections. They have other locations around the country in major cities. I also really love the San Francisco location which I think has a slightly bigger collection.
Amazing place. CA deserves a bookstore like this.I have been to stores all over the country on book tour and only a handful compare to this wonderful place. They have just about everything.I like the way they are organized, too, and the great titles they feature on the main floor: not just the newest books, but really worthy ones from the past 10-50 years.
Great bookstore. They have stationery, mangas (both english and japanese/their japanese selection is wider than their english section), magazines, video game art books, etc. The prices can be very steep for a lot of their items specially figurines, plushes, some stationery, blind bags/boxes. If youre a big touken ranbu fan they have tons of blind bags and boxes just next to the counter of figurines, pins, necklaces I believe or maybe theyre keychains. Very pricy but if you dont mind spending this is the place.
Great neighborhood bookstore to browse through on a lazy weekend. They have a good selection of new and used books but you have to keep a lookout to get really good deal. I still like to stop by every now and then and if I get a great book for a dollar while I am at it, that is double the fun!
I always go when I am nearby. They have the best selection I have ever seen of light novels, either in Japanese or English. They also have a lot of stationary that I dont see in other stores, such as Muji, Daiso, or Maido. They also have a lot of imported anime charms and mystery boxes. But I agree with the other reviewers when they say that the price is a bit steep.
We come all the way from Ventura. Always enjoy all the new things they have to offer. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Great places to have lunch all around. So take a day get yourself a new book and find a great place for lunch. Life is good at Kinokuniya bookstore
I first visited this store in 2011 and bought Sadie Frosts Crazy Days. I am not a regular visitor to the Sunset Strip but this is a lovely place to visit. Last night, I went to their 40th anniversary and met Meredith Maran. We took pictures and the whole bit. It was wondrous. I am trying to rein in my spending so I didnt buy anything. But I was tempted without question. I urge every book lover to visit this shop.
Ive only been in here 3 times, but have fallen in love with the place! For all those anime, and manga lovers Im sure youll be able to find a few things youll love or even take home. They also have figures, plushies, keychains and Cds. Even if youre just window shopping this is the place to go to :)
One of my favorite spots in LA. So many beautiful things to buy, even if you arent into manga (if you are though, this is your place). My only criticism is that this location is a great deal smaller than any of the Kinokuniyas in other cities Ive visited. In Dubai, theres even a cafe that serves Japanese snacks. LA deserves better! (Wow Im bored)
Used to be my go-to for all my Japanese magazines but the place suffers from 90% window shoppers who utilizes the place to hand out and read cool magazines. I mainly like there fashion and automobile magazines section, but now it has shrunk down so much so I hardly stop by now.
There is no other bookstore like this (so far). This is a great independent bookstore that is in Weller Court in Little Tokyo. It has a lot of books for everyone, and includes a lot of literature/books/gifts/stationery dealing with Japan, Japanese and Japanese American culture. I love going in there and just browsing.
It is rare to find a book store still standing these days. Most book stores still standing are either a little grungy or specialty books but Kinokuniya Los Angeles is a well kept and full book store on a great walking street. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. There is metered street parking on the street.
They have a great selection of both English and Japanese books. The Japanese language learning section includes all of the best tools available on the market. Their stationary section has tons of cute imports direct from Japan. The prices can be a bit steep but you cant beat the quality of their products. Theres plenty of manga to be had in both English and Japanese.Try the Tea Forte in the Cafe Zaiya on the upper level. If youre lucky you can get a seat overlooking Bryant Park.
So. Much. Stationery.I cant say much about the book selection, but the store is much larger than the Kinokuniya location in Marina del Rey (inside of Mitsuwa). They have a great selection of pens, pencils, notebooks, and binders. Ive never seen so many gridded notebooks in one place, so this makes the store another haven for me :^).
This is a fabulous bookstore with a wide selection of spiritual, New Age, and esoteric literature. The owner is friendly and will help you find what youre looking for. If youre just browsing, something from their comprehensive selection will surely suggest itself! Definitely worth a visit.
I have to say, its cheaper just to order online in bulk than buying anything here. They once had a deal for Fate series novels, but didnt include all Fate series novels. A little bit of false advertising but what can you do. At least if the quality of the book isnt good you can ask for a lower price.
The store has many selections to choose from such as comics, mangas, figures, toys, books, and many more. I had a pull list there before, however, I decided to cancel it since they keep forgetting to put my Kinokuniya Los Angeles in there. It was very frustrating. The staff are friendly.
I. Love. This. Place. Its prices are not exactly cheap, but they have everything I could want. Great for school because they have tons of notebooks, supplies, and things. I travel here from my home far away so I can get the specific notebooks I love and cant find anywhere else.
Good selection of Japanese and English language books, especially related to Japanese and Asian culture in general. Architecture, Buddhism, martial arts, science, art, gardening. They can special order from Japan! Hard to find Anime & gift items, stuffed animals, incense...so many books fiction & non. Massive selection of stationary items and pens from Japan, including some traditional brush calligraphy items. Glue pens, staplers and removers, washi paper, some dvd. Many current Japanese magazines, too. Carries local Asahi Shinbun. Figures & novelty knicknackery as well. Located on the 2nd floor. Many Japanese eateries and tea + coffee places nearby.
Totally worth the horrible trip to LA! So much to discover and do, youll never see it all in one visit. Fully recommend getting there around 10am (most shops open then) and leave before dark. It is in LA so be mindful of people around you and dont go alone. Yes, skid row is near by like in most of LA and some people will try to pressure you for money. I had a security purse (cant cut through it, locks, and has the CC blocker) and my group which helped a lot. Its not unsafe but not safe either, I wouldnt stay out past dark if you can help it.
Disclaimer: This review is for people that love pens. Not very often do you get to test all the pens that you see online, but at this store in Little Tokyo its exactly that. Just like the stores in Asia, there are pieces of paper stapled together and located right beneath a shelf full of different types of pens organized by manufacturer and then type. From brush pens to .25 pilot hitech c gel pens. You can test them all. There is also a fountain pen section if you want to try some of the more common LAMy, Platinums or pilot pens. If youre looking for a pen and want to hold it in your hand and test the ink and weight, come to this store. You will not be dissapointed.
Theres so much stuff here! Be ready to walk a lot and spend at least 3 hrs in here. I feel like the employees help you out more if ur asians because I always notice them being so nice to one of their own but with anyone else they pass by and kindly say hi but....thats it. However, if you go up to then and ask them for help they really are nice which is still why Im giving this place 5 stars and not 3. I cant really be mad when theyre so helpful and kind once YOU approach them
Service, It depends on sales representative. Most of sales representative is very unfriendly, I feel like city office administrator. Very cold, dont smile and they try to not speak. They are NOT a service person. You need a service training to all of your sales representative such like what is the hospitality business should be.

2022-08-02The atmosphere here is great! Loved browsing the bookshelves as well as all the cute little items they have scattered throughout their store. Was very impressed by the amount of art books they have as well.

2022-02-16I can never get enough of Kinokuniya! If youre ever looking for a good read or something to collect, this definitely the place to go! I love there rewards program too. For every $300 you spend, you get $10 gift card to use in the store! Trust me, Ive gotten over a $110 dollars worth of gift cards. Yet its all worth it!

2022-08-01What more can I say about this place that others already know! This place brings the charm of Japan and has a large variety of everything one may look for. A safe haven for those who enjoy manga and anime, has become more popular thru the pandemic and can feel a bit claustrophobic from how packed it can get. This place is a must stop in Little Tokyo and it’s one place I frequent go to on my off days to relax. See you there

2021-01-27Wonderful place to visit regardless if you are going to buy anything, or not.To browse around such an awesome selection of Manga, japanese cultured books, and magazines is so neat. Its actually pretty rare nowadays. On my visit, I was not planning to purchase anything. However, to my surprise I left the store with a purchase. Came across a book that Ive been really wanting for sometime: Book of 5 Rings, Miyamoto Musashi. This really made my visit.5 stars for the overall experience. They did an excellent job with their precautions during the Pandemic as well. Felt safe shopping here. Happy to visit again.

2022-08-17A little busy depending on when you go, but always well stocked and usually has whatever manga or art book Im looking for. also great for stationary, art and crafts, and miscellaneous things
